THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016

Fish Fry By Skye Blanks

get to know their fellow Key Clubbers better, and

there are plenty of laughs through out the night.

The Fish Fry may get a little hectic, but

that’s the fun of it! From running with steamy hot

food to vigorously pouring drinks for thirsty

customers, it’s all worth it in the end. The Chicken

Fry is coming up and it’s a very similar experience!

So if you missed the Fish Fry, make sure to come

out to the Chicken Fry and help out the Keyport

Kiwanis! You will have loads of fun… I guarantee it!

The Keyport Kiwanis Fish Fry is an annual

event that is held at the Town and Country Inn at

Keyport. It is just as it sounds, a Fish fry that raises

money for the Keyport Kiwanis. MAST Key

clubbers volunteer as waiters/waitresses, bus boys

and many other jobs that make the fish fry a fun

and exciting experience.

The Keyport Kiwanis play a big role in

helping the MAST Key club with projects, trips,

and other activities. This is why we try to help them

out in any way we can… It’s a fun time and

everyone enjoys himself or herself. Newer members

Read to Lead By Camille Ross

was too young to appreciate the mystery that Thomas ultimately solved, two older children picked up on every single one of the clues present in the book and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, solving the mystery with more celerity than Thomas the Tank Engine himself. We left the Day Care Center at the end of lunch with a newfound happiness inside of us. Those kids were truly glad that we had come; glad to have heard our stories. I will never forget that feeling. To those of you who have yet to participate in the Read to Lead program, I must say that reading to those children has been my favorite part of my Key Club experience thus far. If you, like me, have any hesitation to sign up to read, be brave and give it a chance. I am certain that you will in no way regret it.

Every Tuesday and Thursday during lunch, two M.A.S.T. students walk over to the Sandy Hook Day Care Center with children’s’ books under their arms, excited to be welcomed into the building by eager, smiling, young faces. The kids are always elated when they see us, ready to hear the stories we bring. I will never forget the first time I participated in Read to Lead. My friend and I were slightly apprehensive as to how it was going to work. Would our lunch just become a lost hour? To our pleasant surprise, we couldn’t have been more wrong. The moment we walked inside the doors, a small boy noticed me holding Thomas the Tank Engine in my hands and immediately began chanting “Choo choo!” He started running around the room in an excited state and on his face was one of the largest, most genuine smiles I have ever seen. While the young boy

grand entrance—Tom Hanlon’s lively impression of Elvis, and Tommy Corcoran’s confident rendition of “Ice Ice Baby.”

Spectators spent the rest of the evening listening to a piano performance, knock-knock jokes, and even a martial arts demonstration by Jillian Kasun, the Ms. MAST champion who impressed everyone with her board break. MCs Matt Schilke and Maile McCann tested competitor’s wit with the question-and-answer round; and in the end, awarded the judges’ chosen victors—Leor Golan as Mr. MAST and Jillian Kasun as Ms. MAST—with sashes. But for every competitor, and for everyone who came out to see the show, the evening

was a great time and huge success.

This year, Key Club held the second ever Mr. and Ms. MAST talent show, and it was an even greater success than the first. Students from every grade participated (as judges, performers, and enthusiastic audience members) in a forma wear competition,

talent contest, and question round. The talents competitors

showcased were anything but ordinary. The audience members had the chance to witness everything from elaborate lip-synchs to preparing sub sandwiches (which, when set to the soundtrack of “Danger Zone,” was pretty exciting to watch). This included Tyler Johnson’s Katy Perry Super Bowl halftime show reenactment—complete with guest “Left Sharks” Christian Manuelli and David Valentino, and a cardboard lion for his

THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016

Mr. Mast: Leor Golan Mr. and Ms. MAST was a very enjoyable

experience for me. It was the first talent show I ever participated in. When the event coordinators were looking for acts, I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and perform in front of the school. I found coming up with a talent very challenging for me. I could perform a variety of acts, but I wanted something that the audience would not expect. That is when I decided to ride my unicycle. No one in the school knew I could ride one. When a rumor spread that I was riding a unicycle, people did not believe me at first. But I sure proved them wrong the night of the event.

To prepare, I practiced about 15-20 minutes each night approximately 2 weeks before the event. I haven't ridden one in over 6 years, so I needed to refresh myself. It was very important to me to ride well in front of the audience and dazzle them. The formal wear and question answering categories required very little preparation. Riding the unicycle without any faults was more important in my opinion. The day of, I arrived to school with a positive attitude and found my sense of confidence on the stage. I knew that nervousness would only inhibit my riding performance, so I went out without a care to quell the butterflies. As it turned out, both the audience and the judges loved my performance. It was a great feeling to win the title of Mr. MAST, especially because it was the first talent show I ever competed in. For the future, I now know my go-to talent. Thank you for the wonderful experience.

Ms. Mast: Jillian Kasun

For the Mr./Ms. MAST competition, I selected mixed martial arts as my talent. Though people might not suspect that I am involved in this art, I am a black belt, and I have trained since I was five years old. I was really honored to participate in an event that supported such a worthy cause as Stop Hunger Now. When I won the title of Miss MAST, I was a bit surprised, for throughout our school, there is a variety of amazing talents. I hope everyone participates in the next Mr./Ms. MAST!

THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016

100 Years of Kiwanis

January 23 and 24, a Friday and a Saturday, Kiwanians gathered in Detroit, Michigan to celebrate Kiwanis’s 100th birthday. Four hundred Kiwanians, friends, and family gathered in the Detroit Historical Museum on Friday nights to witness the Kiwanis Centennial Exhibit and the unveiling of the historical marker. Kiwanis International President Dr. John Button and First Lady Debbie Button celebrated by dressing in early 20th century clothing.

Saturday night, people gathered to hear an important message from President Dr. John Button about Kiwanis’s significance in the present day and an inspiring address on the importance of leadership from Drew Dudley. A large birthday cake was present for the Kiwanians and guests alike while they viewed the premiere of “A Portrait of Kiwanis,” a mini-documentary detailing the history of the organization.

At the Centennial celebration, the silent auction raised over $8,000 for the Eliminate Project as Kiwanians from around the world, including the District governor from Iceland, gathered to take pride in the longevity of their beloved organization. The band Fifty Amp Fuse played throughout the event as Kiwanians enjoyed themselves in the ballroom.

The cake Kiwanis celebrated its 25th birthday with in Detroit Michigan in the 1940’s. Think of how far this organization has come since then!

THE SANDY KEY FEBRUARY 2015

Letter from the Editor: Another month has quickly passed us by and, believe it or not, this service year is almost over. The end of a service year is always a cause for celebration, considering the remarkable amount of service the MAST Key Club has done alongside Key Club International as a whole. Just take a moment to picture the countless people who want to change the world and want more than anything to better the lives of those around them. Individually, they may touch the lives of a few people, but all together, imagine the boundless possibilities. Every single one of you has committed yourselves to something infinitely spectacular by deciding to join Key Club. As many of you will discover at District Convention, Key Club has made a huge difference this year, and believe it or not, you all have played a vital role in making that possible. I hope all of you are able to enjoy yourselves at this year’s District Convention, celebrating all that Key Club has accomplished in the past year and welcoming in a new, even better service year. If you are unable to attend DCON, I would like to thank you for that you have done to better the lives of those around you. I’m sorry to say that the end of this service year marks the end of my role as club Editor, and handing over the Sandy Key to my successor, who ever they may be, will be bittersweet. I know that the new editor will have their own sparkle, if you will, to bring to this publication, and I look forward to seeing their success! Farewell, Camille Ross Bulletin Editor
