The AFV has enhanced �repower, protection, mobility and situational awareness

Developments in the air force• Replacement plans for the Super Puma helicopter are being �nalised, said Dr Ng, with an evaluation announcement out “soon”.

• Existing Chinook helicopters will also be upgraded or replaced with new variants with greater capabilities that meet Singapore’s mission requirements, such as search and rescue or humanitarian operations.

• Plans for an enhanced island air defence system, such as an air defence shield against airborne threats.

Developments in the navy• The navy will launch its third littoral mission vessel, Unity, later this year, with the other �ve planned vessels expected to be operational by 2020.

• Two new Type 218SG submarines, which replace the existing Challenger class submarines, will be added to the navy’s �eet by 2021.

• The navy is looking to replace ageing landing ship tanks with joint multi-mission ships. These ships, a larger class of warship, will have longer endurance, more lift capacity and greater mission �exibility.

• Developing unmanned anti-mine vehicles which can be used to detect and dispose underwater explosives.
