2018 Annual Meeting and Conference

Message from the President: ItiswithgreatpleasurethatIinviteyoutojoinmeatthe2018HealthMinistriesAssociationConference.Thisyearwillbethefirst“Back-to-Back”conferenceinthe29yearhistoryofHMAannualgatherings,beingheldattheSt.ElizabethTrainingandEducationalCenter(SETEC)inErlanger,KY.IamappreciativeofthetimeandeffortthattheAnnualConferencePlanningCommitteehasdedicatedtoproducingasolidandwell-roundededucationalopportunity.Usingfeedbackfromattendeesatthe2017conference,thegroupdevelopednewandinnovativelearningopportunities,suchastheFridaycommunityimmersionpre-conference.Theannualplanningcommitteehasmadeacommitmenttousetrendsinspiringusinourindividualpracticestodaytocreateaframeworkfortheconference.Iknowyouwillbeinspiredbytheconceptsidentifiedandthespeakerswhowillhelpustobeginveryimportantconversations.

Theannualconferencecommitteecontinuestoraisethebarofoureducationalofferings,ensuringthattherearetopicsforallleadersworkinginareasoffaithandhealth.Theconferencewillagainofferanunparalleledopportunitytolearnfromnationallyrecognizedspeakers,exchangeknowledgeandnetworkwithpeers.Networkingwiththosewhoarepassionateinourfield–particularlythosedriventoinnovate–hasledmetorealizetheimportanceofourannualgatheringthisyear.Ourmembersandpartnershavecontinuedtomeetthechallengesinourfieldandtoexceldespitesetbacks.Weshouldallbeveryproudofwherewearetodayandexcitedaboutwhereweareheaded.TheSacredPracticeofCaring:PartneringforAHealthy,HopefulFutureistheperfecttopicforustoaddressthisyearandbuildconsensusonstrategiestomovetheministryforward.

Dr.WilliamsisanassociateprofessorattheUniversityofKentucky,CollegeofNursing.ShereceivedaPhDinnursingfromGeorgiaRegentsUniversityin2011.HerdissertationexamineddiabetespredictorsamongAfrican-Americansinafaith-basedsetting.Herresearchfocusesondeliveringinterventionstoreducehealthdisparitiesamongminorityandmedically-underservedpopulations.

Sheisnationally-recognizedforrecruitingminoritiesandmedicallyunderservedpopulationsanddevelopingculturally-adaptedinterventionsforimplementationbycommunityhealthworkers,primarilyinAfricanAmericanchurches.

HerworkhasbeenfundedbytheGeorgiaDepartmentofPublicHealth,NationalInstitutesofHealth,RobertWoodJohnsonFoundationandtheBristol-MyersSquibbFoundation.Shehaspublishedinpeer-reviewedjournalsandhaspresentedherresearchnationallyandinternationally.

(SBIRT): Substance Abuse Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment FeliciaStewart,DNP,FNP-C,RN-BCFindingtimetoscreenforalcoholordrugaddiction,anddepressioncanbeverychallengingformanyhealthprofessionals.However,evidenceexiststhatbriefinterventionservicesareeffectiveinreducingheavydrinking.Additionally,resultsoftheSubstanceAbuseandMentalHealthServicesAdministration’s(SAMHSA)Screening,BriefIntervention,andReferraltoTreatment(SBIRT)programin6statesshowreductionsofheavyalcoholuse,druguse,andimprovedlevelsofgeneralandmentalhealthat6-monthfollow-uppostscreening.ThispresentationwillsharehowtheSBIRTprogramprovideshopeforfaithcommunitiestobecomepartofthesolutionforaddictionandmentalhealthneedsinourcommunities.TheSBIRTmodel’s3questionstoaskand3toolstousewillalsobediscussed.
