Message from the Artistic Directors

Dear Friends,

For almost a quarter century, Carinne and I have lovingly produced The Nutcracker, a magical and timeless classic that perfectly embodies the festive holiday Spirit. Generations of Sacramento families continue to delight in this magical tradition as grandparents, parents, and children of all ages thrill to the magic of Clara’s enchanting journey. Sparkling dancing, captivating children, opulent scenery, magnificent live music, and amazing special effects create memories that keep you enthralled year after year.

Because you love The Nutcracker, we know you’ll fall in love with Cinderella, the most beloved character in all fairy tales. Many cultures around the world have versions of this rags-to-riches, happy-ever-after storybook fable and Ron Cunningham’s Cinderella has been applauded in major capitals throughout Europe, Asia, the Near East, and America. Join us in February over Valentine weekend and fall in love all over again.

From traditional classic family fare to the cutting edge of modern creativity, the season continues with the finest of contemporary dance. In March, join us for Modern Masters at the Three Stages Theatre at Folsom Lake College featuring the West Coast premiere of Edwaard Liang’s magnificent Wunderland, a World Premiere by Darryl Grand Moultrie, and the return of Septime Webre’s saucy Fluctuating Hemlines with a live percussion ensemble direct from New York.

If you’ve never seen our spectacular dancers up-close-and-personal in the intimate atmosphere of an in-studio performance, you must not miss our Genius program in April. The company has been granted the exclusive privilege of presenting repertory highlights of the legendary George Balanchine, the greatest choreographer of the 20th century. We also invite you to our in-studio performances of Beer & Ballet, extraordinary evenings of experimental dance created by our very own talented dancers. Join our website and “friend us” on facebook to keep up with our fast paced, action packed calendar of performances and events.

Shop local this holiday season by visiting our boutique in the lobby during intermission. Our fabulous 2012 calendar, featuring Sacramento Ballet Dancers and Sacramento Firefighters from the Burn Institute, make wonderful stocking stuffer gifts for the holidays. We thank you for your support and look forwarding to sharing great dance with you all season long.

Happy Holidays,

The story of The NutcrackerPrologueA Street Outside Dr. Drosselmeyer’s Workshop

It is Christmas Eve… the lamp lighter, the Christmas tree seller and the chestnut vendor are selling their wares along the main street of a quaint European village. Families, children, and townspeople hurry along the busy thoroughfare. In the midst of the holiday bustle, we catch a glimpse of Dr. Drosselmeyer in his workshop, adjusting mechanical dolls to take to a Christmas party. Act I, Scene 1The Christmas Party at the Stahlbaum’s Home

Servants and delivery boys pass in and out of the stately home as the Stahlbaum children, Fritz and Clara, eagerly anticipate the festivities of the

annual Christmas party. At last the guests begin to arrive full of good cheer. Holiday greetings abound. The Christmas tree is unveiled and the

dancing begins. Suddenly, the eccentric Dr. Drosselmeyer arrives with wonderful gifts: mechanical dancing dolls, which entertain and amaze both children and adults alike. Dr. Drosselmeyer has a special gift for Clara: a wooden Nutcracker and, in a fit of jealousy, Fritz breaks its jaw. The doctor bandages the Nutcracker with his handkerchief and, after a full and lively evening, the party comes to an end. Close to midnight, Clara leaves her sleepless bed and returns to the parlor in search of her Nutcracker. Unable to find him, she soon falls asleep and enters the magical world of dreams.

Act I, Scene 2The Transformation and Battle

The mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer appears with the toy Nutcracker, attracting some mischievous mice. Waking Clara, he magically turns the Nutcracker into a life-sized warrior and commands the Christmas tree and the rest of the room to grow bigger and bigger. Clara now finds herself surrounded by life-sized Christmas toys and her beloved Nutcracker, who now has a regiment of toy soldiers to fight the vicious mice, who scurry from the walls. A fierce battle ensues. The excited mice are on the verge of victory when Clara intervenes by throwing her shoe at the Mouse King. Distracted, he turns from his adversary and the Nutcracker dispatches

him with his sword. Impressed by Clara’s act of bravery, Dr. Drosselmeyer transforms the Nutcracker into a handsome prince.

Page 5: The Sacramento Ballet presents The Nutcracker

Act I, Scene 3Journey Through the Snowflake Forest

In gratitude, the Nutcracker Prince leads Clara on a journey to the Kingdom of the Sweets, passing first through the beautiful Snowflake Forest. In the midst of a blizzard of dancing snowflakes, the majestic Snow Queen and King appear in a sleigh drawn by tiny reindeer. With royal courtesy, they welcome Clara and the Nutcracker Prince and escort them through their frosty domain.

INTERMISSIONAct IIThe Kingdom of the Sweets

Clara and the Nutcracker pass through gossamer clouds and a company of angels as they approach the Palace of Sweets. Once again they receive a royal welcome, this time from the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. The Nutcracker tells of his fierce battle with the mice and the Sugar Plum Fairy rewards Clara for her bravery. The colorful residents of the kingdom are introduced to the visitors and the royal entertainment begins. First comes Chocolate from Spain, dancing a lively Bolero. The soft undulating strains that accompany

Coffee from Arabia are followed by bubbling Tea from China and the sprightly Candy Canes. Marzipan Shepherdesses dance to the enchanting sound of reed flutes as Peppermints from Russia perform a lively Trepak. From France comes Mother Ginger with a skirt full of Ginger Bread Children. All of the beautiful Flowers from the kingdom gather for a waltz to honor Clara. The Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier crown the festivities with a Grand Pas de Deux.

All dreams must come to an end, and, at last, it is time for Clara to depart. To bid farewell to their guests, each group of dancers return to wave good-bye as Clara sails for home in a beautiful hot air balloon.

Tchaikovsky and the MusicTchaikovsky’s score for The Nutcracker is undoubtedly the most popular and familiar music ever written for the ballet stage. The Nutcracker was the last in a series of brilliant works by Tchaikovsky that defined the great classical era of ballet. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, Russia on May 7, 1840. Like many composers of his generation, his family expected him to complete a formal education. Consequently, Tchaikovsky graduated from law school in 1859 before embarking on a career in music. Despite periods of deep depression, he was remarkably productive as a composer. His works include ten operas, six symphonies, three piano concerti, a violin concerto, incidental music for various plays and operas as well as three of the most famous classical ballets in the world: Swan Lake (1875), The Sleeping Beauty (1890), and of course, The Nutcracker (1892). Tchaikovsky died of cholera in St. Petersburg on November 6, 1893 leaving a legacy of music beloved the world over.

Artistic DirectorsRon Cunningham & Carinne Binda

Under the artistic vision and creative leadership of husband and wife team, Ron Cunningham and Carinne Binda, the Sacramento Ballet has risen to national prominence for its artistic excellence and outstanding work in the community. Serving with distinction for over twenty years, they have transitioned the company from a small regional ballet to become an integral centerpiece in the rich cultural tapestry of Northern California.

Having enjoyed extensive international careers as performing artists, Ron and Carinne have brought a wealth of experience, knowledge, and creativity to the Sacramento Ballet. Under their stewardship, the budget has expanded from $400,000 to $2.7 million, audience attendance has grown by 400%, and they have expanded from 6 to 25 professional dancers. They have added over 50 world premieres, and 50 Sacramento premieres to the repertory, including 18 masterpieces by the great George Balanchine. Ron Cunningham has created or staged over 40 of his original ballets to define the company’s esthetic with signature works such as; Romeo & Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Alice in Wonderland, Hamlet, Carmina Burana, Dracula, A Streetcar Named Desire, Etosha, and many others. Ron Cunningham’s The Nutcracker incorporates almost 500 children each year, making it the largest cast of children in a professional production anywhere in the world. Together, they have invented dozens of initiatives designed to deepen, broaden, and diversify audiences with innovative programs such as Modern Masters, Beer & Ballet, Inside The Director’s Studio, Living Sculptures, Red Hot Valentine Nights, and the Capital Choreography Competition. In 2007, the company made its first international tour to the People’s Republic of China receiving accolades and praise in both Shanghai and Beijing.

Ron and Carinne have been in the vanguard of forging creative partnerships with their fellow arts organizations for many years, and are a key partner in the E.Claire Raley’s Studios for the Performing Arts. They have fostered outreach programs to over 40 different social service agencies, and full emersion education programs for children at risk in elementary, middle, and high schools. Together as a team, Ron Cunningham and Carinne Binda embody the Sacramento Ballet’s mission statement to engage, inspire, and educate through the powerful vehicle of dance.

Barbara Jackson •Artistic Directors’ UnderwriterBarbara first became involved with The Sacramento Ballet as an audience member over 15 years ago, attending not only performances at The Community Center Theater, but also regularly attending in-studio previews, brown bag lunches and Beer & Ballet performances at the Ballet’s Studio location.

We thank her for her patronage and ongoing support.
