Confirmation….What is it?

Confirmation is a sacrament in which those who have been baptized receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit whom the Lord sent upon his apostles at Pentecost. It is a sacrament that celebrates God’s special strengths and gifts to those who have been baptized. It is the final

sacrament of initiation to the Catholic faith and may only be received once in a lifetime.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit help Christians live their lives more fully committed to Christ. These gifts are:

Wisdom Understanding Counsel Fortitude

Knowledge Reverence of God Piety

From the Gifts of the Spirit, come the Fruits, which are:

Charity Joy Peace Patience Kindness

Goodness Long suffering Mildness Chastity

Modesty Faith Self-restraint

***All students must know the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as they will be asked to list them by the Bishop at Confirmation.

Candidates’ Promise

As a member of the parish of St. Pius X Church, I hereby desire to affirm my faith and belief in Jesus Christ and His Church in the

sacrament of Confirmation. I ask to become a candidate of Confirmation and to enter the program of preparation being offered to me by this

parish. To the best of my ability. I will participate in all learning sessions and activities that are a part of the program. I understand that

it is my responsibility to attend Mass regularly. I acknowledge that I enter this time of preparation of my own free will, and I accept my

responsibility to open my heart and mind to the workings of the Holy Spirit during this time of preparation.

You may pick a man or woman’s name regardless of gender of the candidate.

You must research your Saint and in the lines below state why you have chosen this man or this woman as your chosen Saint.

Requirements of Confirmation Candidates

The Confirmation process is a two-year process. This begins with 7th grade and continues through 8th and up to the time of Confirmation. Below are the

expectations and requirements for Confirmation:

* The candidate MUST be a practicing Catholic who attends Mass and receives Communion on a regular basis. If you are not attending Mass, your Confirmation will likely be deferred for failing to follow the most basic of Catholic teachings. This requirement is closely monitored over the course of the calendar year. Use student envelopes each time you attend Mass. Under NO circumstances are students or parents to submit another student’s envelope at Mass.

Religious Education Classes – Candidates are expected to attend classes once a week, adhere to the attendance policy already in place and successfully complete the 7th grade curriculum. Students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately.

Parents are expected to take an active role in their child’s preparation for Confirmation. This includes, but is not limited to, attending the Parent/Student Retreat which will be scheduled during the school year.

Students are expected to participate in all activities related to Confirmation preparation which may include the Enrollment Mass, group service projects, retreats, etc.

The completion and submission of this booklet by the date due.

The Role and Eligibility of the Sponsor

Individual sponsors must be selected and should be decided upon without delay. A sponsor must be a person who knows the candidate and can help him/her on his/her spiritual journey and can share his/her own faith. This selection should take place at the beginning of Confirmation preparation as it often takes time for a sponsor to receive eligibility papers from his/her home parish. In fact, this process can easily take months if the sponsor is not known in his/her parish or in most cases not registered in a Catholic

Church at all.

Sponsor Eligibility: * Must be at least 16 years old.

* Must be a Catholic who has received all three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation).

* May be male or female for either gender candidate. * Cannot be a biological parent but may be a stepparent or grandparent.

* Must meet the eligibility requirements of his/her own parish. * Must meet the eligibility requirements of the Catholic Church including

“valid marriage” status. (see below)

Once you have chosen a sponsor, he/she must go to HIS/HER parish and request a Sponsor Eligibility Certificate. Once they have that, they should

give it to you to attach to your booklet (see “Attachment” page)

Sponsor’s Name: _______________________________________________________________ Sponsor’s Parish Name and Address: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

*Booklets will not be accepted as complete without the Sponsor Eligibility Certificate.

**A valid sacramental marriage means that if a person was married in a Catholic Church, he/she cannot be divorced and remarried unless the first marriage was annulled. For more information on whether or not someone qualifies, please speak to our staff.

Confirmation Fees and 8th Grade

The fee for Confirmation is $100.00. This covers the re-registration fee in total. There are no additional costs for retreats or Confirmation robes or materials. This fee should be submitted with this booklet (see Attachment page) unless other financial arrangements have been made.

Students will be measured for their Confirmation robes at the beginning of their 8th grade year. These robes are rented not purchased.

8th Grade

Our 8th grade program is called “CHOSEN”.

http://ascensionpress.com/t/category/study-programs/chosen/confirmation-preparation

You can access the CHOSEN website by using the information on the link above. Chosen is a modern approach to addressing the questions and even doubts that teens have with Faith

today. Through the use of fast-paced videos shot from points all over the world, students will have the opportunity to search deeper within themselves as to how they plan to follow

Christ here on earth. Both students and parents will receive a book to follow through the process.

Classes will meet on Mondays from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. from September until spring when Confirmation will likely take place. We will not know the exact date of Confirmation until

the summer before it takes place.

SERVICE

Jesus’ mission on earth was devoted to service of others. Be it the poor, the sick, the uneducated, the weak, the doubtful, Jesus gave of Himself

in order to bring a more perfect union between man and God. As disciples of Christ, it is our job to do service for others. You are expected

to do at least 9 hours of service.

3 hours of family service: This can be, but is not limited to, helping around the house, babysitting…anything you do to lighten the load for

family members.

3 hours of community service: This is service that you do for people who are not in your family. This can include, but is not limited to,

babysitting for a neighbor, yard work for an elderly neighbor, library reading program, etc.

3 hours of Church service: This is service that you do for your Parish. For ways you can fulfill this service, please call 693-5107 and ask for Mrs. Brennan (Parish Administrator) or check with the R.E. office. Church service opportunities also often present themselves in the

Church bulletin or website when there are events scheduled to happen.

Mrs. Mitchelli and Mrs. Forbes are also good “go to” people for Church service. They are in charge of God’s Little Angel’s and the St. Pius Youth Groups, respectively.

Vacation Bible School and the Children’s Christmas Party are two major Religious Education events that also offer service hours. Watch for notices during CCD and in

the Church bulletin.

All service should be recorded on a separate paper and handed in by January before Confirmation. It does NOT need to be completed by the time this booklet is

due.
