What is S1000D and the S-Series?S1000D is a worldwide technical publication specification for content authoring, structure, management, presentation, and exchange. It is part of a series of international specifications called the “S-Series” that address a number of areas associated with product support information or ILS. S1000D is a powerful specification optimized for documenting air (civil and defense), land, and sea equipment, but is also well suited to other technical documentation. For example, it has been successfully applied to commercial goods such as kitchen appliances and construction.
Some of the key benefits of S1000D are: XML-based modular data, consistent metadata, data portability across computing platforms and operating systems, interoperability of data among project partners, tailorable business rules, data reuse, and reduced overall life cycle costs.
