The Ryan-Kilcoyne School of Irish Dancing December 2013 Christina Ryan-Kilcoyne, TCRG, ADCRG Molly Curran-Burns, TCRG Late edition A Message from Christina: I would like to congratulate everyone that participated in Oireachtas, whether in a ceili as a soloist or both. Ryan-Kilcoyne had a wonderful range of results, and I was proud to see some of our newer dancers just up on that stage, as well as our more seasoned dancers- everyone looked brilliant & represented our school spectacularly. Thank you to Molly & Maura & for assisting in preparing the dancers, thank you to the parents for providing me your dancers & all that you do for dancing and thank you to the dancers for performing with style. As 2013 comes to a close I would like to applaud everyone on a lovely year, I have proudly watched many dancers grow both on the dance floor & personally. Some of the dancers I have watched dancers grow up & some I have only know for a short time, but either way, when it is time for them to move on, I am always proud to see & hear of their many accomplishments & adventures. Our school has been blessed to be filled with some amazing young people that inspire me- looking forward, I hope for our Ryan- Kilcoyne school to continue to encourage dancers both on & off the dance floor to pursue their dreams. I hope that all of my dancers know that they have a place in my heart and I wish everyone a safe and blessed Merry Christmas & a brilliant 2014. A Message from Molly: Seasons Greetings! I would like to wish a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukah, & a Happy New Year to all of our dancers, their families, & their friends! I hope that during the course of the holidays, you are able to relax & enjoy some quality time with the people you cherish the most in your lives. Take this annual opportunity to unwind & recharge yourselves for the upcoming New Year. My advice to each of you is to commit yourselves to making at least one positive change in your lives. Whether it’s improving your study habits at school, helping with extra chores around the house, reaching out to a new friend, or pushing yourself harder at class, I want you to find something & stick to it. It’s always easy to ‘make and then break’ New Year’s resolutions, but this year make it something you can keep. I think that Jake Steinfeld said it

Late edition

A Message from Christina: I would like to congratulate everyone that participated in Oireachtas, whether in a ceili as a soloist or both. Ryan-Kilcoyne had a wonderful range of results, and I was proud to see some of our newer dancers just up on that stage, as well as our more seasoned dancers- everyone looked brilliant & represented our school spectacularly. Thank you

to Molly & Maura & Maria for assisting in preparing the dancers, thank you to the parents for

providing me your dancers & all that you do for dancing and thank you to the dancers for performing with style.

Our school has been blessed to be filled with some amazing young people that inspire me- looking forward, I hope for our Ryan-Kilcoyne school to continue to encourage dancers both on & off the dance floor to pursue their dreams.

I hope that during the course of the holidays, you are

able to relax & enjoy some quality time with the people you cherish the most in your lives. Take this annual opportunity to unwind & recharge yourselves for the upcoming New Year.

My advice to each of you is to commit yourselves to making at least one positive change in your lives. Whether it’s improving your study habits at school, helping with extra

chores around the house, reaching out to a new friend, or pushing yourself harder at class, I want you to find something & stick to it. It’s always easy to ‘make and then break’ New Year’s

resolutions, but this year make it something you can keep. I think that Jake Steinfeld said it

best when he stated, “When you feel good about yourself, others feel good about you, too.” Be the light in the lives of those around you, encourage yourself and others to be great, & you

will never feel like you are unable to achieve excellence. Also, I would like to extend a huge ‘congratulations’ to ALL of the dancers who

supported and/or competed at this year’s annual MARO & SRO. I am so proud of each of you. It is an honor & privilege to get to work with all of you in & out of class. Your hard work

& dedication is beyond admirable. Whether you reached your goal or not, remember that there’s always room for improvement. It’s easy for me to say this, but every chance you get

to walk away & dance another day should be viewed as a success. Win, lose, or draw, there are many people in this world who will never get the chance to dance or walk. Be thankful & grateful for all that you have achieved & all that you will continue to achieve. Have a safe &

blessed holiday & remember to enjoy some time-off!

Christina & Molly are very proud of all the Oireachtas dancers. No matter what your result, if you danced all out and behaved respectfully, than you

did a tremendous job! Remember sometimes results are not what we wish them to be, but more practice can make better results in upcoming years, however, bad behavior

creates a result and an impression that cannot be changed.

Thank you to Agnes Drobot for collecting, “spiffying up,” and distributing all of the

ceili outfits, the teams looked fabulous!!

And a thank you to all the Team Parents for your hard work organizing and supervising your teams!

& to those “behind the scenes” parents who helped with last minute sewing, creating headpieces,

searching for tights & bloomers, etc. for the teams!

Training Tips from Coach Molly

Have you seen on the website Molly’s weekly installment of: “Drill, Technique, Posture and Stamina Class Notes & Agenda”

Follow this link for her weekly notes: www.ryankilcoyneschool.com/Molly/Molly.html

Implementing Aerobic Activity into Your Training

Irish dance as we already know is a high-impact activity. In order to prevent injury & maintain a proper stamina, it is critical to balance the training in class with another form of

aerobic training outside of class. If you are already playing a winter sport, then you’re doing great! If you aren’t, it’s not a bad idea to branch out and try something different. Running, swimming, urging (rowing on a row machine), & biking are great ways to keep

your body aerobically fit without overusing the exact same muscles through dance. Over the course of this month & the next, try to follow one (or alternate) of the activities on the chart

below. Pick one per day and write down your results – how you felt after the workout.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Running 20 mins. – ½ speed

15 mins. – intervals 2 mins. Slow, 1 min. fast

40 minutes slow - recovery

OFF 30 minutes – tempo – ¾ speed

45 minutes – slow - rest

Swimming 15 laps – ½ speed

10 laps – inetrvals 2 laps slow, 1 lap fast

25 laps slow - recovery

OFF 20 laps - tempo – ¾ speed

30 laps – slow - rest

Biking 6 miles – 5 min. mile pace

5 miles – intervals 2 miles slow, 1 mile fast

10 miles slow - recovery

OFF 8 miles – tempo – ¾ speed

12 miles – slow - rest

Urging 1200 meters - relaxed

1000 meters – intervals 200 m slow, 100 m fast

2500 meters slow - recovery

OFF 2000 meters – tempo ¾ speed

2750 meters - slow- rest

Page 5: The Ryan-Kilcoyne School of Irish Dancing€¦ · Classes will resume the week of January 5th. Oireachtas 2013 Congratulations to all the Dancers who competed in the Mid-Atlantic

Don’t do all of these everyday! Pick 1 & if you’re feeling really good, maybe pick 2.

Do not overdo it & listen to your body. Remember to stretch after each work-out. ** Don’t forget to do your 20 push-ups per day (10 when you wake up and 10 when you go to

bed) as well as your abdominal exercises to keep a healthy core & upper body. **

Are you in the market for a solo dress?

If yes, please check out the “Items for Sale” page on our website, www.ryankilcoyneschool.com.

Many of the dresses are most appropriate for a dancer’s first solo dress.

And most of the dresses are from dancers from our school, so your patronage helps teammate’s families too.

If you would like to post a dress on the page contact Lisa at [email protected].

Advice, memories & Love from one Dancer to another…

Every month we will post a new question & the answers to the month prior. We would love to have as many dancers participate as they might help another dancer

succeed with their own goals!

November’s Question:

What about Irish Dance are you most grateful??? Christine Cahill (u17): The opportunity to travel to so many countries! Not many people get the chance to do this at such a young age.

Emily Evrard: For teaching me that rhinestones are Always fashion forward & for my great dancer calves!

Gabi Drobot (u10): For my wonderful teachers & the amazing people I have met throughout my career.

Brett Hoffman (u14): The friends I have made while doing something that I love!

Michaela Hollister (u17): For my ability to jump like a champion, it has helped me in track & field too.

Tess Keppel (u12): Dancing keeps her footwork up for sports. :-). Anna Kleinschmidt (u16): That my 8-hand has had the opportunity to dance together for 7 years, we have become like a second family!

Megan McPaul (u16): Our friends and the confidence when I am dancing. Aidan Moroz (u16): The lifelong friendships I have made throughout my career. Katie Roszyk (u16): The opportunity to travel, meet new friends, including some that have become like big and little sisters! I am grateful for the times I spent with my sister & the many memories & experiences we have shared.

Page 6: The Ryan-Kilcoyne School of Irish Dancing€¦ · Classes will resume the week of January 5th. Oireachtas 2013 Congratulations to all the Dancers who competed in the Mid-Atlantic

Meaghan Roszyk (u18): I am grateful for the times I have spent with my sister, all of the amazing friends I have made & the places I have visited. I am grateful for all the experiences both good & bad and the opportunities dance has provided.

Jaclyn Timoney (u17): The easy reel, which isn’t so easy! And for my ceili team and for Christina and Maura.

And from Mom, Cheryl Keppel: I personally am grateful for Ryan-Kilcoyne school as Christina and Molly are willing to meet you where you are - if you want to compete at a high level they will work with you - if you want to dance to simply add something different into your week and feed your creative side that is good too. I've always appreciated the mix from both the teachers and the families.
