'l'RINITY COLLEGE, THE COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS, AND
PROVINCIAL MEDICAL SCHOOLS.
IN concluding this History I have thought it desirable to givea brief account of the Medical Schools connected with TrinityCollege and the College of Physicians, the Queen's Colleges and
Provincial Institutions, in order that the reader maybecome acquainted with the complete educational resources
of the Irish School of Medicine. To give biographicalsketches of the teachers connected with those schools would
unduly extend the limits of this work; many of them, however, having been Presidents or Professors of the College of Surgeonsor teachers in the private schools, have been mentioned in
connection with those institutions.
THE SCHOOL OF PHYSIC.
An account of the origin of the School of Physic will be
found at pages 108 to no inclusive. As at present consti
tuted, it consists of the amalgamated medical schools of TrinityCollege and the College of Physicians, with the addition of
several new Professorships. The College of Physicians elect
the Professors of the Practice of' Medicine, the Institutes of'
Medicine, Midwifery, and Materia Medica, the remainingProfessors are elected by the Board of Trinity College, who
claim to be the sole managers of the School. In the first edition of this History a list of the Professors in
Trinity College" Medical School was given. It was taken from
the College Calendar, but it was pointed out that a revision of
the interesting record was desirable, as the name of Professor
Leahy was omitted from it. This revision has' been
admirably carried out by Dr. T. Percy C. Kirkpatrick."* History of the Medical Teaching in Trinity College, Dublin, and of

College and the College of Physicians to dissolve their con
nection as regards the School of Physic. The Professors
elected by the College of Physicians to be in future appointed byTrinity College. The £400 per annum. at the disposal of the
former College, payable to the King's Professors, to be divided
equally between the Colleges. The revenue derived from Sir
Patrick Dun's estate (about £1,000 per annum) to be divided
equally between the College of Physicians and Sir PatrickDun's Hospital, Up to the present this agreement has not
been realised, to accomplish which the repeal of the School of
Physic Act is necessary..
The School buildings have been for several years paststeadily improved and enlarged, and at present they can com
pare favourably with any similar structures in any part of
Europe. In 1800 there were only 22 students in the School of Physic,
and in the first decade of the Nineteenth Century the averagenumber was 56. In the next decade the number rose to 114.
In the next ten years the average annual number was 213.
From 1834 there was a great decrease in the number of Medical
846 MEDICAL SCHOOLS OF THE QUEEN'S COLLEGES
students for many years. In 1838 the number. was only 81.
After 1864 the number steadily increased, and has never gonebelow 240.
The interests of the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeonsare practically identical. Their incomes are chiefly derived
from the fees of students examined conjointly by the two
bodies. United for examinational purposes, why not com
bine for educational purposes and convert the College Schools
into a Medico-Surgical School under joint management of the
Colleges
THE MEDICAL SCHOOLS OF THE QUEEN'S COLLEGES.
In 1849 there were established medical schools in the recentlyconstituted Queen's Colleges in Belfast, Cork, and Galway.Parliament provided grants for their maintenance and for the
salaries of their Professors. They were all connected with the
Queen's University, and every candidate for a medical degreein the latter was obliged to study during at least one annus
medicus in one of the Queen's Colleges. On the replacementof the Queen's, by the Royal University, this condition
ceased to exist, and probably the medical schools of these
Colleges have thereby suffered serious injury. The newlyestablished National University requires instruction to be
taken out in one of the Colleges. attached to it which now
include the Cork and Galway Colleges.

SOHOOL OF ANATOMY, MEDICINE, AND SURGERY, WARREN'SPLAOE.
A School was formed in Cork in 1835, but the College at
first refused recognition of it, but in 1836 the premises objectedto having been much improved, recognition was granted.
The School had all necessary appliances, provided at the
expense of Dr. Wherland, the teacher of anatomy. Aboutninety pupils attended this School, in which the followinggentlemen lectured :-Denis C. O'Connor, M.B. Dub. Univ.,L.R.C.S.L ; George Read M 'Mullen , M.D. Glasg., M.R.C.S.L
Daniel Knight Lloyd, M.B. Dub., on Medicine; Daniel SweenyM.B. Dub. Univ., M.R.C.S.L., on Chemistry; James Richard
Wherland, M.D. Glasg., L.R.C.S.L, on Anatomy and Physiology; John P.opham, M.B. Dub., M.R.C.S.L., on Midwifery;Dr. Neligan, L.R.C.S.L, and George Atkins Rountree,M.R.C.S.L., on Materia Medica and Medical Botany; Thomas
G. Gregg, M.D. Glasg., M.R.C.S.L., on Forensic Medicine.
The School was closed in 1844.
THE "REOOGNISED SOHOOL OF MEDICINE," OORK.
A Medical School was established in 1828 on the South Mall,Cork, by Henry Augustus Csesar, Its certificates were received
by the College at an earlier date than were those issued from
Woodroff's School, hence Csesar termed his institution the
852 MEDICAL SOHOOL, BELFAST
"Cork Recognised School." After the extinction of Woodroffe's School, Csesar's was termed the Cork School of Medi
cine. It continued in existence after the-establishment of the
Medical School of the Queen's College, and was not closed until1858. There lectured in this School the following gentlemen :-
Anatomy and Physiology.-H. A. Csesar, M.D. Edin.,M.R.C.S.I,Physiology and Pathology.-John Popham, M.B.
Ferrar was soon replaced by Robert Coffey, M.D. Glasg.,L.R.C.S. Edin., and 'the teaching staff was completed by the
addition of Henry MacCormac, M.D., L.R.C.S. Edin.
Dr. MacCormac, who graduated in Edinburgh in 1824, and
whose works are so well known, was the last survivor of the
above lecturers. About 1840 William Burden, M.D .. Glasg.,succeeded Little in the Midwifery Chair, and William Mateer,M.D., was appointed Professor of Botany, vice Martin. In
1845 Alexander Gordon, M.D. Edin., L.R.C.S. Edin., was
appointed Demonstrator and, subsequently, Professor of
Anatomy. The School, which had a fair measure of success,
became extinct on the institution of the Medical School of the
Queen's College.
