Rover V8 Engine history

1961 Buick Special 215 cu. in.

The Rover V8 began life as the Buick215, an all-aluminium OHV pushrodengine introduced in 1960 for the 1961US model year (it was on their drawingboards in the late 1950s).

The compact, all aluminium alloyengine was light, at just 144 kg (317 lb),and capable of high power outputs: themost powerful Buick version of thisengine rated 200 hp (149 kW)

Rover V8 Engine history Buick produced 376,799 cars with this

engine in just three years. Acomparable number of Oldsmobile 215engines were produced.

In addition, some Pontiac models werefitted with the Buick 215, leading to thenickname "BOP 215" for the engine (BOPstanding for Buick/Oldsmobile/Pontiac).

The aluminium engine was relativelyexpensive to produce, however, and itsuffered problems with oil and coolantsealing, as well as with radiatorclogging from use of antifreezeincompatible with aluminium.

Rover seeks engine in the USA

In January 1964 Rover gaveAmerican operations head J. BruceMcWilliams permission to investigatethe possible purchase of an AmericanV8 engine for Rover cars.

History relates that McWilliams firstsaw the Buick V8 at the works ofMercury Marine, where he wasdiscussing the sale of Rover gasturbines and diesel engines to thecompany (Mercury did indeed usethe Land Rover 2.25 L (137.3 cu in)diesel engine in marinised form).

However, it is likely that McWilliamswas aware of the Buick enginebefore this. In any case, McWilliamsrealised that the lightweight BuickV8 would be ideal for smaller Britishcars

Looking for Marine Engines, negotiations start for the Buick V8 tooling

McWilliams and William Martin-Hurstbegan an aggressive campaign toconvince GM to sell the tooling, whichthey finally agreed to do in January1965. Retiring Buick engineer Joe Turlaymoved to the UK to act as a consultant.

The Rover V8 has long been a relativelycommon engine for kit car use in Britain, much as the Chevrolet small-block V8 isfor American hot rod builders (thoughmany British hot rods have traditionallyused four cylinder engines, like the FordPinto and Crossflow units).

Even in the US there is a strongcontingent of builders who select theBuick or Rover aluminium V8 engine foruse in small sporty cars like the MGB andthe Chevy Vega.

The deal done –Production starts

The British made engines wererun on two SU carburettors, initially HS6 then HIF6 and HIF44variants (14 years), then twoCD175 Stromberg carburettors(2–3 years), Bosch L-Jetronic (7–8 years, aka Lucas 4CU Flapper)

Then Hitachi Hotwire (5 years, aka Lucas 14CUX), then theGEMS system (many years) andfinally Bosch Motronics for 2years.

The engine is still was cast until2011, in an improved version, byCoscast in Birmingham, UK.

The Engine is installed into Rover cars from

1965 to 2004 As well as appearing in Rover cars, the

engine was sold by Rover to small carbuilders, and has appeared in a widevariety of vehicles. Rover V8s feature insome models from Morgan +8, TVR,Triumph TR8, Land Rover and MGB V8,among many others.

Because of the engine's advancing age,the demise of the MG Rover Group, andthe switch to Jaguar engines in the2005 Land Rover Discovery, the lastmass-produced Rover V8 was made inMay 2004, after 37 years of production, with the 2004 Land Rover Discoverybeing the last mass-produced vehicle touse it.

Guess who’s Rover P5 Coupe?

New Rover models utilise the power

Within months, the production of the enginewas transferred to Solihull and the creationof the P5B soon followed. The next recipientfor the compact and powerful engine wasthe Rover P6 – and, in the process, a minorBritish legend was created. It did not endthere though; Spen King worked on a coupleof projects, which were based around thenew engine – one being the sadly stillbornRover P6BS, the other being the RangeRover.

Like the P5B, the V8 engine was the makingof the Range Rover; somehow it seems hardto imagine that car enjoying the success thatit did without the smooth and powerful V8engine under the bonnet. In an off-roadvehicle, the stump-pulling torque producedby the ex-Buick engine had found perhapsits perfect role in life.

There were some issues

BL had attempted to make proper useof the engine themselves, slotting itinto the MGB GT V8 and Triumph TR8.However, in both cases and fordifferent reasons, the two modelsfailed to live up to the promise thatthey had initially shown.

Were there any downsides to the RoverV8? Yes: only that no one withinLeyland was forceful enough to makesure that it was used in the TriumphStag.

With it, the Stag would haveundoubtedly caused its maker a wholelot less grief and, therefore, remainedin production for a lot longer. That, though, is no fault of the engine – onlythe company’s shortsighted andpartisan management.

The Rover version of this engine was extensively developed and used for rallying, especially in Triumph TR8 sports cars.
