The Rotary Club of San Jose held its weekly meeting at the San Jose's Rotary Summit Center; and we werepersonally greeted by the Downtown Development Committee under the leadership of Sean Cottle. The line wasstaffed by Art Carmichael, Mel Matsushima, Shirley Lewis and Sean on my arrival.

President Rod Diridon, Sr. called us to order for the Club's 4791st meeting by asking the gathered to join insinging God Bless America with the voice of Phil Strong and the piano of Paul Tumason.

Our "Wisdom for the Day" was finely presented by Paul Masquelier and represented such a thoughtful reflectionit's worth quoting in full.

Our media constantly remind us of all that is wrong in our land, and of the reasons we should distrust those who serve at every level of public life.

I invite you to share in a prayer for our civic and public order.

Let us pray,

Creator of all that is and all that can be, help us to remember that even in times of great political and economicuncertainty, we live in a world of great opportunity and abundance.

Look upon and bless the peoples of the earth.

Renew the ties of mutual respect that give shape to our civic life.Continue to give us honest and able civic leaders.

Help us to eliminate the vestiges of poverty, prejudice, and oppression, so that peace may prevail withrighteousness, and justice with order, and that women and men from various cultures, with diverse faiths andwith differing talents may find, with one another, the fulfillment of true humanity;

For we ask this in the name of all that is holy and good, Amen

Next was news and humor from John McLeod. The News: Market up; relations with Afghanistan better thanreported by media; Harry Reid predicts Kagan hearings will go as smoothly as possible (one person at our tablethought John might have treated that statement as perhaps humor). The intended humor: When the DOWexperienced the 1000 point drop it was so bad Goldman Sacks laid off 3 members of Congress. Every tax problemhas a solution that is uncomplicated, reasonable and straightforward: and hence, wrong!

Red Badgers Janet Kern of the RDA and Stephen Pyle, a CPA, introduced themselves and served as holders of thetravelling microphones for Rotarians with guests and visiting Rotarians. Rotarians with guests included WayneDippel, Chris Citti, Larry Stone, and Carl Honaker.

President Rod next asked Jessie Thielen and Rod Diridon, Jr. to introduce new members, Michael Van Every andDaniel Wallace.

Carl then was invited by President Rod to report on last week's Fishing Day for elementary students from Lowelland Washington schools. Carl was aided in the presentation by Steve Tedesco, several members of The RotaractClub of Silicon Valley and a sharp set of photos of the event. 150 kids participated and caught 250 fish with 75Rotarians helping. We owe our thanks to Carl, Steve, the members of Rotaract; and fellow Rotarians who gavetheir valuable time and energy.

President Rod next recognized Mike Blach of Blach Construction Company for the company in being recognized asthe #1 best place to work in the Bay Area for companies with between 101 and 500 employees. Mikeacknowledged his co-worker and fellow club member Matt Bell, who does marketing for the company. Blach thenmade a $2,500 donation to the Club's endowment. Rod on our behalf thanked Mike for his success andcontribution.

Next our President announced that the District Assembly is this Saturday, May 15th at De Anza College. This isan opportunity for Rotarians to meet many of the over 4000 Rotarians in the District and to learn about the many

facets of Rotary. If you are interested in attending please register at the District website: www.rotary5170.org .

The remaining portion of the meeting related to our esteemed President-elect, Larry Stone. A video relating toLarry's 2010 Lifetime Extraordinary Award from the Silicon Valley Arts & Business Awards (ABBYs) initiated thepresentation, The video was narrated by our own Leigh Weimers who illustrated that he has a broadcast voice asfine as a his journalist's pen. The video established Larry's love of the fine arts from his youth, his dedication topublic art, and appreciation that arts and entertainment are integral to a civilized and integrated community.

President Rod called Larry to the podium where he was greeted by great applause. Larry as modest as he isrequested "assessor's Love" and the audience responded with the usual boisterous boos. As a consequence, Larrynow seemed fully at home or as he aptly stated "within his comfort zone". Larry presented an incisivebiographical sketch as son, student, corporate employee, husband, father (3 adult sons), entrepreneur andpolitician. His dad was a tool and die maker (a vocation I might add noted for requiring keen intelligence) atBoeing in Seattle, his mother a professional photographer who with her husband had studio in Seattle. He wasclearly the son of very hard working and entrepreneurial parents. Both parents owned small businesses and hisfather invented the novelty moving cat eye clock, the best selling novelty in the country. Like many of thatgeneration they manifested an honest and well ground patriotism for their country based in love, reason andthankfulness. The Stone family fostered keen interest in sports, fine arts and politics; interests that informedLarry and contributed to formation of the civic leader he is today. That Larry is a pragmatic Democrat in theTruman, Jackson, Clinton mold should not be surprising given his upbringing. Indeed, there were only tworeligious holidays recognized in the Stone household: Election Day and Opening Day in baseball. Larry began hispolitical career as a youthful precincts worker and in his high school Boy's Club. He's never lost an election.

A true Washingtonian, Larry attended the University of Washington where he earned two degrees: one in PoliticalScience, and an advanced degree in Business. At the Huskies' institution he was active in student governmentand his fraternity. Hired by Bache and Company he traveled to New York and rented with a roommate apenthouse apartment in an apartment building that was occupied by Bellevue nurses and airline stewardesses.Among the later was his wife of 41 years, Carmen who hailed from Arizona. Carmen is as imbued with as muchcivic virtue as her spouse and established by unpublicized settlement rather than trial employment leave forpregnant stewardesses. At Bache Larry help establish protocols to better organize administer and protect thebrokerage house business. Transferred to the City by the Bay as a married man and new father, he turned down areturn to the Big Apple. Instead he formed a real estate investment company that thrives today. Carmen wantinga warm climate chose Sunnyvale. There Larry entered politics partially in response to politicians who werecondescending toward their electorate. Within one week of the move Larry had a new home, had become acandidate for mayor and welcomed a new son into the Stone household! This year he'll be elected to his 5th termas County Assessor (unopposed). His interest and participation in politics extends to the highest level and he ispersonal friends of former President Clinton, Mrs. Clinton and their daughter. In fact he and Carmen spend anevening in the White House third floor as their personal guests.

Larry remains an active supporter of the fine arts, a friend of professional teams seeking to move to the San Josearea. (he's very optimistic about two major professional teams soon moving here).

As to his presidency of the club, he promises Fun, Fellowship and Service.

His speech over, many of us felt we are very fortunate, indeed, to count Larry as friend; fellow Rotarian; and, our98th President of the Rotary Club of San Jose. President Rod you leave us in the best of hands.

Who is the Diridon Station Named After?

"Is it Jose Diridon?" "A Diridon? I think it must be an historic THING, but I am not sure?" "It'sbeen here for a long time, it must be named after a dead guy."

"The Convention Center? Yes, TOM McENERY. Great guy. Republican, right?"

End Polio Now

Your contribution will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from theBill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns indeveloping countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures andcompounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes arethat high. By donating now, you can help Rotary achieve a polio-free world.

You can down load the End Polio Now bimonthly news letter by Clicking On This Link. This is a separate download. It wasupdated May 2010.

The bottom line is this: As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children – wherever they live – remainat risk. You can track progress on the internet at this link.

The Four Way Test

Over 1.2 million Rotarians can't be wrong! In all the things we say and do . . .

Is it the TRUTH?Is it FAIR to all? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
