Why say the Rosary We learn our prayers. One of the coolest things about the rosary is that you knock

out six prayers in one. The prayers in the rosary are, the Apostles Creed, the OurFather, the Hail ary, the !lory "e, the Fati#a prayer, and the Hail Holy $ueen %not to#ention the &ign of the Cross'. (earning these prayers )ill help us in personal prayerand prayers in Church.

It is an opportunity to build community. We share intentions before praying. Thisestablishes a purpose to praying the rosary gi*ing us so#ething to think about.

It teaches us to be quiet. &aying the rosary can be an opportunity to slo) do)n,be +uiet and focus on !od. Repetiti*e prayer can be a *ery eecti*e )ay to centreoneself.

It helps us to become comfortable with intercessions to Mary. To put thissi#ply- )e ask ary for prayers ust as )e ask each other for prayers. The dierenceis that ary has a special link to her &on through )ho# all prayers are oered andalso ary is our #other.

It teaches us about the Scriptures. any people do not realise that praying therosary is #eant to be a #editation upon the life of Christ and ary in the &criptures.Although not e*ery #ystery of the rosary can be found speci/cally in the "ible, therosary can be an eecti*e )ay to explore the stories fro# the "ible.

History of the Rosary

The traditional story of the rosary )as that ary herself appeared to &aint0o#inic in the t)elfth century. At that ti#e, tradition says she ga*e hi# therosary and pro#ised 0o#inic that if he spread de*otion to the rosary, hisreligious order )ould 1ourish. 2t is +uite true that 0o#inic )as +uitede*oted to the "lessed other, but no one kno)s for sure if Our (adyherself ga*e 0o#inic the rosary. 2f she did, it is +uite certain that she didnot gi*e hi# a rosary that looks like the one )e ha*e today.

Originally the rosary had 345 beads, the sa#e nu#ber of psal#s in the"ible. 2n the t)elfth century, religious orders recited together the 3456sal#s as a )ay to #ark the hours of the day and the days of the )eek.

Those people )ho didn7t kno) ho) to read )anted to share in this practice,so praying on a string of 345 beads or knots began as a parallel to prayingthe psal#s. 2t )as a )ay that the illiterate could re#e#ber the (ord and his#other throughout the day.

The Hail Mary owes its origin to the rosary. When people said the rosary in the twelfth century, Gabrielles

greeting Hail Mary, full or grace, the Lord is with thee was often said along with the ur !ather. Later,

"li#abeths greeting blessed are you a$ong wo$en was added. %t was not until the si&teenth century that the

words Holy Mary., Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death were added.

di(ided into fifteen brac)ets *or decades+ and a o$inican $on) assigned $ysteries to each of the decades.

These $ysteries were e(ents in the life of -esus as written in the gospels. y $editating on these e(ents e(en the

illiterate could )now the stories in the ible. These decades were the sa$e as ours e&cept for the last two Glorious

$ysteries. %n those two, the /oronation and the 0ssu$ption together $ade up the fourteenth decade and the

fifteenth decade was the Last -udg$ent.

n ctober 12, 3443, 5ope -ohn 5aul %%, declared that the following year would be the 6ear of the 7osary. !or

the first ti$e in centuries a change was $ade in the rosary. The 5ope added and defined 8 new $ysteries that

concerned e(ents in the public life of -esus. These new $ysteries were called the Lu$inous Mysteries or

Mysteries of Light Todays co$plete rosary is now $ade up of twenty decades of the Hail Mary, separated by

an ur !ather and a Glory e and so$eti$es the !ati$a prayer. "(idence again that the rosary is a li(ing prayer
