January is a time for reflection and resolutions.
Very likely you are going to see some new faces in the library.
We have said goodbye to a lot of retired staff in 2013.
We will miss each and everyone of them.
We are equally thrilled to have our new staff.
The 2013 Annual Report is there for you to see our accomplishments:
http://www.pcdl.lib.oh.us/about.html
As a librarian, I really enjoy compiling statistics to show the community
how hard their public library has been working for them.
I think you will agree when you take a look at them.
As always, we would not be able to accomplish our goals without our
Trustees, Friends of the Library and volunteers who give so much of
themselves to make our public library a place everyone can enjoy.
Michael Zimmerman

In his new position, Zimmerman will be responsible for maintaining a
consistent image for the Preble County District Library while promoting
the organization’s many programs and services.

A Don’t-Miss-This Recommendation
The second book in Mary Ellen Taylor’s Union Street Bakery series is out and it is as good as the first book, The Union Street Bakery released in February, 2013. Sweet Expectations continues the saga of Daisy McCrae who lost her career in high finance and reluctantly returned home to help run the failing family bakery. Daisy is the adopted daughter of the McCrae clan and has huge abandonment issues. The first book detailed her journey to locate her birth mother. There was also a ghost story woven throughout the
story that tied in very nicely with the history of Union Street Bakery. This newest book opens with Daisy coming to a sudden realization that will change her life forever. I’m giving no spoliers here, so you’ll have to read the book yourself to find out just what the change is. The bakery is also undergoing a transformation and Daisy finds herself solving another ghostly mystery when a recipe box from the 1940s is found hidden in one of the bakery walls.
If you read the first book, you won’t want to miss the second. I enjoyed every word. ~Cheryl Richter~
Book description: Running the family bakery and living in the store’s attic might not be Daisy’s dream life, but she’s beginning to understand what being content feels like. And then she gets some unexpected news. In one moment, Daisy’s calm existence turns into chaos. Now she’s struggling to keep it together, especially with renovations at the bakery spiraling out of control. But when a box of recipes and mementos is found hidden behind a wall in the bakery, Daisy suddenly has something to cling to—a mystery that echoes her own troubles and gives her the opportunity to figure out what she really wants out of life....

“Sense and Sensibility” Retelling
The Invention of Wings / Sue Monk Kidd: Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.
Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh
birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful,
who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys
over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their
own, dramatically shaping each other’s destinies and forming a
complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement
and the uneasy ways of love.

January Dirty Magic / Jaye Wells: The Magical Enforcement Agency keeps dirty magic off the streets, but there's a new blend out there that's as deadly as it is elusive. When patrol cop Kate Prospero shoots the lead snitch in this crucial case, she's brought in to explain herself. But the more she learns about the investigation, the more she realizes she must secure a spot on the MEA task force. Especially when she discovers that their lead suspect is the
man she walked away from ten years earlier - on the same day she swore she'd given up dirty magic for good. Kate Prospero's about to learn the hard way that crossing a wizard will always get you burned, and that when it comes to magic, you should never say never.

Waking the Dead / Heather Graham: They say a painting can have a life of its own… In the case of Ghosts in the Mind by Henry Sebastian Hubert, that's more than just an expression. This painting is reputed to come to life—and to bring death. The artist was a friend of Lord Byron and Mary Shelley, joining them in Switzerland during 1816, "the year without a summer." That was when they all explored themes of horror and depravity in their art….
Now, almost two hundred years later, the painting appears in New Orleans. Wherever it goes, death seems to follow. Danielle Cafferty and Michael Quinn, occasional partners in solving crime, are quickly drawn into the case. They begin to make connections between that summer in Switzerland and this spring in Louisiana. Danni, the owner of an eccentric antiques shop, and Quinn, a private detective, have discovered that they have separate but complementary talents when it comes to investigating unusual situations.
Shadow Spell, Bk 2 The Cousins O’Dwyer / Nora Roberts: With the legends and lore of Ireland running through his blood, falconer Connor O’Dwyer is proud to call County Mayo home. It’s where his sister, Branna, lives and works, where his cousin, Iona, has found true love, and where his childhood friends form a circle that can’t be broken . A circle that is about to be stretched out of shape—by a long-awaited kiss.
Meara Quinn is Branna’s best friend, a sister in all but blood. Her and Connor’s paths cross almost daily, as Connor takes tourists on hawk walks and Meara guides them on horseback across the lush countryside. She has the eyes of a gypsy and the body of a goddess, things Connor has always taken for granted—until his brush with death propels them into a quick, hot tangle. Plenty of women have found their way to Connor’s bed, but none to his heart until now. Frustratingly, Meara is okay with just the heat, afraid to lose herself—and their friendship—to something more. But soon, Connor will see the full force and fury of what runs in his blood. And he will need his family and friends around him when his past rolls in like the fog, threatening an end to all he loves .

Family History
Ever found yourself drumming your fingers on the
keyboard waiting for results to a search? Ever railed (to
yourself, I hope) at the historical society that still uses
snail mail to send out copies of obituaries? Do you
grump because a family history book is still under
copyright and you can’t download it to read page 110
where your ancestor is mentioned?
Admit it. 21st century genealogists have come to
expect instantaneous results in every way, shape, or
form. They sit down in front of a computer, click a few
keys, log on to the genealogy database of their choice
and voila: records regarding their family come to them
in a handy list, ready to be opened, read, and saved to
their family trees. The internet opened the flood gates
on the accessibility of genealogical information.
But what about those researchers who came before the
age of the internet? What was the search for family like
for them? There were a lot more car trips involved,
that’s for sure. Genealogists had to actually get into
their cars, sometimes drive hundreds of miles to rifle
through dusty, allergy-ridden marriage records just to
learn whether Aunt Jane actually married Uncle Joe.
Locating deeds and other records was done by writing
letters to local courthouses, libraries, and/or historical
societies. This process could take weeks and usually
involved self-addressed, stamped envelopes.
Finding relatives in cemeteries meant you actually had
to go to the cemetery and look stone by stone.
Sometimes the cemetery sexton would be there to give
you a hand. Today, cemeteries can be searched from
the comfort of home using sites like “Find a Grave” and
“Billion Graves”.
In the past, genealogists had to be both patient and
diligent. The journey to the past was difficult, but
they persevered. The next time you feel a
whine working its way up your throat, swallow
it. The ghost of a stalwart genealogist might be
behind you, ready to pounce. ~C. Richter~
Those Stalwart Genealogists That Came Before Us, or
Please Stop Whining When You Can’t Find it, Read it,
or Download it on the Internet
Caveat: Of course, 21st century genealogists still
dig through old, dusty records and tromp through
lonely cemeteries. They must even pull books off
the library shelves and leaf through them page by
page. But the genealogical search of today is
nowhere near as difficult as it once was!
Why are some libraries and historical societies so far behind the
times? Several reasons may be to blame:
1.) The equipment necessary to enter the digital age can be
quite expensive. Staff must also be trained on using the
equipment.
2.) Many libraries and historical societies depend on volunteers
to scan and enter data regarding historical records and
obituaries.
Supporting local historical societies and your local library is the
best way to ensure that the services you have come to depend
on continue to stay available.
Did you know that your levy dollars help support the work being
done in the Preble County Room? Those dollars help purchase
new equipment and purchase research materials that help
genealogists in their search for family.
Our volunteers, Skip Rhodes, Steve Kleinhen, and Wayne Melling
volunteer every week, scanning and entering the information
made available from PCDL’s Preble County Historical Marriage
and Obituary Records Database. People from all around the
world have accessed this database; they have traveled across
the globe just to use the invaluable resources housed in the
Preble County Room.
Your support makes all the difference, and helps breathe new
life into all of the wonderful stories your ancestors have to tell.
Keeping your changing needs in mind

W hat a busy and productive year we have had in both branches this past year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our patrons for their continued support
and patronage. You are what makes us tick – we really appreciate you!!!!
I would like to thank Nancy Hannah for her years of dedicated service to West
Manchester and Eldorado. Nancy retired in June and her replacement was hired in
August. Her name is Amy Fields and she has been a welcome addition to the staff.
Amy is in charge of children’s programming and she has done a bang up job! We
usually have something scheduled for all age groups during the month. Check out the calendar and see what is coming up. And remember, food is always provided. Danita,
our Adult Programming Librarian, has also been coming up to the Branches and we have some outstanding and fun adult craft programs and plan on doing more this
coming year.
We started a new reading program this year for kids in grades 2-8. It was called Kickoff for Reading and ran from September
through December. The kids signed up, got a paper football assigned to them and when they made the goal of reading 15
books, they got a prize. Between the two branches the kids read
140 books. We are going to do a similar program this coming year.
Our Summer Reading Program was a huge success this year.
Participation was up from last year in both branches and our programs were well attended. We’re hoping for even more participation this year!
If you have not been to the Eldorado Branch lately, please come in and see what changes we have made. We now have a dedicated small children’s area as well as a
juvenile section. And don’t forget – we have a coffee maker! Come in and enjoy a hot
coffee or tea or hot chocolate with the latest bestseller or your favorite magazine.
Thanks to a generous donation from the West Manchester
United Church of Christ, we were able to purchase some really neat items for our children’s area in West Manchester, including a
snazzy red bookcase and a toddler’s play-rug with accessories.
The room is so cheerful and inviting. Come and see it!
Because you passed the levy, we have been able to purchase
movies and CDs for permanent placement in each of our branches. We have worked hard to bring you the very
latest releases in movies, CDs and book series. Some of
these include: Man of Steel, Red 2, RIPD, This Is the End, Prism by Katy Perry, Red by Taylor Swift, Unapologetic by Rihanna and many, many more. If
there is something you would like to see in either West Manchester or Eldorado, let us know and we’ll try to get it for you.
Our goal is to make our Branches the best they can be – warm and inviting and to provide the best customer service possible. If you have any questions, suggestions or
requests, please see me or Amy.

Aiken: When socialite Emma
Crowell stops the carriage on
the way to Portland to
'exercise' her new puppy, the
last thing she expects is to be
left behind in decidedly
unsuitable attire, let alone
kidnapped. Fortunately, she is
soon found by local rancher
Peter Lowery. Unfortunately,
he has no intention of
abandoning his livelihood to
take her back to civilization
until the fall. He will, however,
provide food, shelter and safety, and in return he expects
Emma to earn her keep.
Emma is surprised to find she enjoys the challenges of life at
the cabin and feels drawn to Peter and his young son Robby.
But though willing to learn, no matter how she tries, she
never seems to live up to expectations. As Emma seeks God's
guidance and aspires to the picture of womanhood shown in
the 31st chapter of Proverbs, Peter comes to realize that he
may be underestimating the strength and character behind
this woman's beauty.
A Beauty So Rare / Tamera Alexander: Plain,
practical Eleanor Braddock knows she will never
marry, but with a dying soldier's last whisper, she
believes her life can still have meaning and
determines to find his widow. Impoverished and
struggling to care for her ailing father, Eleanor
arrives at Belmont Mansion, home of her aunt,
Adelicia Acklen, the richest woman in America—
and possibly the most demanding, as well.
Adelicia insists on finding her niece a husband,
but a simple act of kindness leads Eleanor down a far different path—
building a home for destitute widows and fatherless children from the
Civil War. While Eleanor knows her own heart, she also knows her aunt
will never approve of this endeavor.
Archduke Marcus Gottfried has come to Nashville from Austria in
search of a life he determines, instead of one determined for him.
Hiding his royal heritage, Marcus longs to combine his passion for
nature with his expertise in architecture, but his plans to incorporate
natural beauty into the design of the widows' and children's home run
contrary to Eleanor's wishes. As work on the home draws them closer
together, Marcus and Eleanor find common ground—and a love neither
of them expects. But Marcus is not the man Adelicia has chosen for
Eleanor, and even if he were, someone who knows his secrets is about
to reveal them all.

Chaser: Unlocking the Genius of the Dog
Who Knows a Thousand Words / John W.
Pilley with Hilary Hinzmann: Chaser has a
way with words. She knows over a thousand
of them—more than any other animal of any
species except humans. In addition to
common nouns like house, ball, and tree, she
has memorized the names of more than 1000
toys and can retrieve any of them on
command. Based on that learning, she and her owner and
trainer, retired psychologist John Pilley, have moved on to
further impressive feats, demonstrating her ability to
understand sentences with multiple elements of grammar and
to learn new behaviors by imitation.
John’s work with Chaser offers a fresh perspective on what’s
possible in the relationship between a dog and a human. His
story points us toward a new way of relating to our canine
companions that takes into account our evolving understanding
of the way animals and humans learn
