An Appreciation of the Faculty

Althcugh they have kept us af ter school; have seemingly imposed burdening lessons upon us, especially in springtime; have given tests which loomed like nightmares before us ; ancl have, according to the student, boldly coilspired together to give us a s hard a time a s possible to get through ; yet, on loolcing back in a saner mood, knowing tha t we will never study under some of them again, we fully appreciate their efforts not only to better us mentally but to leave impressions of higher aims in life. We have given them many trying times, f a r harder than we realize, and yet, in spite of all that , they have left with us a better understanding between teacher and pupil ancl have brought forcibly upon us tha t the faculty of this year has done all possible to impart to us the fact tha t it no longer takes a birch rod to subdue us and that a teacher is a human being. We par t with the absolute assurance that in their efforts they have accomp- lished a little of that a t which they aimed.

Donald McCauley, a much lover1 member of the class of 1923, gradu- ated from the school of this world December 4, 1922.

We never think of "Sam," a s we called him, without th inkins of his smiling face. Taking the bitter with the sweet, he carried tha t smile along with him.

We, who knew him best, know tha t smile was the outward and visible sign of a right cheerful spirit , and even the hard discipline of sickness did not rob him of t ha t smile. Along with many other lads, he knew the meaning of the second-class scout badge, and he exemplified it.

When a class once graduates from high school, there never can be a complete reunion. The graduates move from town and are scattered f a r and wide. The only comulete class reunion is on the other side,- and Donald MacCauley will be there, -with his smile.

After a year of united effort, in which the entire class has taken part, we have put out this book as a result of all the talent of the class of '23. It serves as a memoranclum of all that has taken place during the past jcholastic year. We sincerely hope it will serve as an example to the next year's staff ancl that they will profit by our mistakes. Our staff is a large olie and to them we owe all praise for 1923 Tiger.

The History of Our Class

Dear Father Time: When we entered High School a s Frosh in 1019, little did we think tha t you could

tu rn your great wheel so swiftly. You have never made four years fly a s f as t a s you did these last four ; a t least, so i t seems to us. So Inany things have happened during this time tha t \ve can tell you about only a few of them.

I t took us a full year to get used to our new school, and, a s Freshmen, we didn't do very much, besides annoying our worthy superiors, except perhaps having a pa r ty and a picnic.

When we were tenth graders, we felt so sophisticated tha t we thought activities and parties were below 11s. So we only had tbe almost required clsss partv.

But, a s Juniors, we suddenly acquired a little common sense and decided to make our class of '23 renowned. Ear ly in the year we gave a benefit movie, "Wedding Bells," and because of tl-e enthusiastic ticket-selling campaign, there was a full house. We gave several dances which were enjoyed both by High School and College students. Quite often we had Eskilno pie sales to refresh our weary school-mates. Several nlenlbers of our clsss gave a play entitled "Neighbors" before the afternoon assembly of all the students. The p1a.y was very humorous and the cast kept their audience laughing. Oh yes, we were a very enterprising class. Then, of course, the big Prom, given May 1 2 for the class of 22, was a glorious ending to tha t year. The gyin was decorated elaborately with yellow and white, the class colors of '22, being divided into two distinctive parts. A four course banquet was served a t six-thirty. The programs were unique and of course the banquet was excellent. Dancing and cards made a fitting ending.

Leslie Butler, John Dillon, Glenn Konow, Betty Evans, and Reuben Wi t t represented us in debate; Harold Hamley in basketball; Harold Hamley, Floyd Fortnum, Herbert Wallschlaeger, John Dillon, and George Oyster in football. Two of our class won places in the declsnlatory contest, namely: Betty Evans and Edythe Simmons. Then Betty represented us a t Princeton, Waupun, and Oshkosh. Harold Halnley was the editor-in-chief of the "Fpectator" the last semestel' of our Junior year.

In the second month of our Senior year we gave the Teacher's Reception which was also a Hallowe'en psr ty . F i r s t all went to the auditoriunl where they enjoyed a movie, "Romeo and Juliet.' After the nlovie the teachers were entertained in the gym and r ~ f r e s h m e n t s were served.

Again Betty Evans and Edythe Simmons won first and second places in the de- clamsl,ory contest and Hrrold H7lnlcy received first place in the orstorical contest. Doris Tucker was the editor-in-chief of the "Spectator." Leland Tabbert was the atl-letic manager both l s s t year and this year.

There, Father Time, I have told jou of everything I could tl inli of, if I have forgotten anyone who is deserving praise, you will probably hear of hiin later. With the guidance of Miss Silver the first two years, and of Miss Griffiths the last two, a s our faculty advisors, we have followed a s t ra ight upward path and now a s Seniors, we feel tha t our career a s High School students has not been in vain. Most of us a re now going to institutions of higher learning, but we will never forget the four years we spent a s students of our dear Ripon High School.

of Napolean. Margaret Moffat is studying Latin and Ancient History in Rome. George Oyster is the owner of a large oystery fishery on the eastern

seacoast. Ruth Pilger is a Latin professor in the University of Alaska. Ruth Schneider has recently completed a history book which is being

used in the schools of Wisconsin. Malinda Schultz is the wife of a famous civil engineer. She solve;

all his problems. Edythe Simmons is the second Mary Garden. Evelyn Priest is a young American playwright. Alfred Stindt is a collector of Egyptian relics. He especially enjoys

translating the hieroglyphics. Harold Storck is a lion tamer for the Pow-Wow Circus. Doris Tucker is the champion woman athlete of the Olympic games. Lloyd Tucker is contemplating a radio to the moon. Ar thur Steinbring is a noted chiropractor. Herbert Wallschlager has a large harem in Salt Lake City. Lyndon Waters is a dealer in all makes of cars. Belle Turner is the private secretary to John D. R. Jr. of New York. John Wentland is a wealthy bachelor a s a result of discovering a

"Love-me-not" potion. Reuben Witt is Markesan's only woman hater. Leland Tabbert is taking LaFollette's place in Congress.

Martha- by-the-Day ( B y Julie M . Lippnzanfi)

"Martha by the Day" is a clevei- comedy in three acts. The plot is woven about Martha Slawson. The first act of the play takes place in a flat in New York City and the last two acts on the Ronald Estate in the Catskill Mountains.

The part of Martha, taken by Elvira, is a very heavy part. Martha is burdened with two children ("Ad" Eoersz ancl Ruth Heckes) whom she is trying to educate, and her husband, John Dillon, who has an attack of tuberculosis. Because of his siclcness they go to the mountains where they take care of the estate of Mrs. Sherman (Edythe Simmons) whose husband is in prison. Martha not only solves her own problems but also the problems of those people with whcm she comes in contact.

She befriends a homeless girl, Claire Lang, (Betty Evans) and sac- rifices everything for her. Claire finally marries Frank Ronald (Floyd Fortnum) .

Allen Sherman (Harold Hamley) comes in in the second act and a very dramatic scene takes place between his wife and him. Martha proves him a worthy man and all comes out right.

Amy Pelham (Anne Huibregtse) is picked out by Mrs. Sherman as a charming wife for Ronald, but Amy is in love with someone else and Ro- nald wants Claire. Martha helps to solve this problem also. The butler (Glen Konow) coilstantly says the wleong thing and Martha has a great time with him. Lundy (Alfred Stindt) is very clever and his franltness furnishes much amusement. The part of "Ma Slawson" is taken with much talent by Lola B o e t t ~ h e ~ .

This is a great play and with Mr. Goodrich as coach it will be a certain success.

Because of the efforts of its staff members the "Spectator" has proved to be quite a success this year. Meetings were held every Monday night, when the material was brought in and looked over. Everyone looked forward to Friday noons, when his little issue, which was so enjoyed, was ready. Several special numbers were prepared, such a s the Christmas and Thanksgiving numbers

The "Spectator" has been the one means of byinging together the activity and interest of our beloved institution. The staff of 1923 deserves special praise for the high standarc1 in each of its issues.

"Rectangle" has found a warm place in the heart of R. H. S. I t had an unusually large roll call this year. Many good programs were given, among them a successful one-act play: "Sauce for the Goslings." It was worked up very well.

Much of the success of this society was due to the coaching of Miss Bagemihl, the Rectangle advisor.

We seniors extencl to Rectangle our wishes for its future success.

This organization had almost been forgotten until it was again organized this year by Miss Schultz. The enrollment is large enough to show that there a re a great number of Junior High School students interested in this kind of work. The fees a re only ten cents, for which the members receive an Audubon button and several Eclucational Leaflets on birds. Reading Circle

One of the most beneficial of all the organizations in Ripon High School is the Junior High School Reading Circle. All those who wish to get credit for their membership must read a certain number of assigned books. This helps the student to foym a taste for good literature which is a very desirable and necessary factor in any line of education. A great number of students qualify for this credit every year which shows that our Junior High School is eager to acquire knowledge in this way.

The Hiking Club was orgailizecl a t the beginning of the school year. It is the only form of athletics tha t the girls can take par t in and is enjoyed by a large number of them. Hikes of five or six miles were taken every night af ter school under the supervisioll of some one of the High School faculty interested in athletics. Long hikes were taken over the week end-several to Fond clu Lac, Green Lake and Berlin.

Girls hiking two hundred miles in twelve weeks were awarded an "R" not the official "R" which the boys get, but one designed especially for the hikers.

Picnics and parties were enjoyed by the girls on long hikes and a t school.

The idea of the Hiking Club originated with Miss Bagemihl. She realized that the girls a s well a s the boys needed athletics and decided upon this new club. This club is sure to increase in membership and value each succeeding year.

There was great enthusiasm before the clebate season of 1923, and there was a record turnout a t the trials. After strong competition, the following teams were selected.

This year, Mr. Klaus took the position of coach and it is througll his able leadership that our teams owe their success. We wish to thank him for his untiring effort and expert guidance. His skillful direction combined with the hard work and enthusiasm of the debaters gave us the great results from the teams of this year.

Debate Season of 1921

Debating is undoubtedly the most beneficial activity in High School, for i t gives the following advantages to the student. F i rs t , it gives him the opportunity to learn to speak effectively before an audience or in private conversation. Second, i t familiarizes him with the current problems of the day and gives him a n insight into human nature and the progress of the world. Third, i t gives self-confidence and t ra ins him to think quickly and accurately.

Ripon High School has always been famed for the great debate teams which have been built up under fine coaches such a s Bonar and Chase. Men such a s Miller, Nason, Eker t , Burr , Carlton Lueck, Nelson Lueck, and many others have proved conclusively tha t there never has been a lack of debate material a t our school.

Perhaps there a re some who do not think much was done in this department but though we didn't go far , we had good teams and i t was only through a fluke decision tha t we were eliminated from the league contest. This seems all the more t rue since Waupun who won this decision lost by a very large margin in the next debates.

Then let the past be remembered but the fu ture must be looked forward to. There a re three requirements which next year's team must have ; namely, a good coach which we will have, good enthusiastic debaters we always have and always will have, but lastly we must have more support Ily the student body and better attendance a t debates. The future is in your hands. Make next year's debate season a success.

Affirmative Team

The Affirmative sicle of the question was upheld in a very satisfactory manner this year. Although this team did i ~ c t lose a debate it was eliminated from the league contest by a 6 per cent difference in the clecisions.

Betty Evans opened the dehate with a flow of oratory and the opti- mism of the opposition then took a decided fall. Dillon, the seconcl speaker continued the affirmative argument and effectively established his point by his convincing manner and sound arguments. Captain Butler concluded the debate and af te r he had fiiiishecl his clinching rebuttal there was no question about the decision.

It will be noticed tha t both teams this year had a girl in the lineup. Never before has a girl been given a chance a t Ripon ancl they both proved that they could debate well.

The negative case was openetl by Glen Konow who ''drove home" his points in a forceful and logical manner. Lauret ta Eckert then took the Roor and wrought ut ter confusion in the ranks of the enemy with her straightforward arguments. Reuben Witt concluded the negative stand effectively. Ellis Hammen who was chosen a s alternate this year renderecl tbooct service and nearly had his chance to debate. He and Laui-etta Eckert, who a re the cnly debaters to return next year, will, in all proba- biltiy, help to maintain Ripon's debate spirit.

Oratory and Declamation

A great numker of students went out for oratory and declamation, but some of them did not continue their work in it. Nine of the boys and nine of the girls kept 011 working to 5e in the local contest. In the oratorical contest Harold Hamley ~-ezeivecl first place and Winfield Diedrich, second place. In the declamatory contest Elizabeth Evans and Edythe Simmons received first and second places respectively. These all represented Ripon in the sub-league contests held here. The other participants were from Markesan, Omro, Berlin, and Waupun. In the cleclamatory ccntest Elizabeth Evans, Ripon, and Marie Wedge, Waupun, received first and second places. In the oratorical contest Lawrence Halstedt, Marke- san, and Harold Hamley, Ripon, received first and sezond places. These represented the league a t Neenah in the sub-district contest.

A t Neenah Harold Hamley took second place ancl Betty Evans also took second in the declamatory contest. Both represented Ripon in the District contest a t Oshkosh. The first place there went to the s tate contest a t Madison.

These winners have spent a great deal of t iwe in preparing th i r se!ec- tions and their efforts have been greatly rewarded by their success. Miss Wilson coached Elizabeth Evans, ancl Sylvester Toussaint coachecl Harold Hamley. A great pa r t of the success of the speakers was clue to the un- t i r ing assistance of their respective coaches.

I t has been Ripon's boast tha t she has always stood very high in -the number ancl the talent of those who enter these contests and we know that she will never have to recall her boast.

Ripon opened the season against the heavy and experienced Way- lalid Academy team of Beaver Dam. I t was in this game that Ripon lost two valuable players, Oyster and W a l l s ~ h l a e g e ~ , both backfield men. When the final whistle blew Ripon had the short encl of a 19 to 13 score but the team gained some valuable experience.

They next cleaned up Waupun by a 13-0 score. Klemp showecl fine offa7sive and defensive work.

Fond du Lac with their heavier team scored two touchdowns in the last half of a closely contestetl game. Although Ripon tried they never could score ancl lost 0-14.

Mayville challenged the s tate and we were about the only ones to accept it. They had us outweighed 30 lbs. to the man and when the game was over they had an advantage of 60-0.

There weren't enough out for scrimmage this year which was the chiel' cause of our lack of skill in the gamc. With most of the men back we look forward to a great season next year with more pep all around. With Coach Lunde back we're positive that Ripon will come out on top.

140. This was Louie's first year on the squatl. His knowledge of hasket- ball pl-ovetl valuable to him when i t came to making the squatl. Nehls also has one moye year in which he, will be a valuable asset to the team.

Forwai~d - Sophomore. Age 17, Weight 130. Pro11t did not play in many games this year, yet he was always ready when calletl upon, he did his best. He has two more years to play.

Puge Sixty-nine

Basketball Season When the baslcetl~all season opened aritl the call was made for candi-

dates more than a score of young huskies responded to the call. Around those who were left f rom last year, Klemp, Gray, and I-Iamley, a speedy combination was built, with eight men of equal ability.

The season opened Dec. 15th on which our men played ant1 defeated the Alumni, who were supposed to be a super-aggregation, such a s L i t t !~ , Miller, Pickard, Otto, aild Reichmuth. Our team came out on the long end of a 11 to 14 score.

The Sollowing week Berlin Training School came down for a ti l t in the "Gym" and was deleated by a score of 27 to 16. '-

On January 12th. our team traveled to Berl i i~ to 1,ecome victors, P a u l ~ and Kuiide adding the rreeded four points in the last few minutes of a hot and f lesh tilt. The score was 21 to 17.

A week later we met Mayville in the College Gym, with their fast ant1 heavy team and different style of playing. Ripon playing ~vonclerful ball was ahead a t the end of the first ha l f ; but the heavy Mayville team, aidecl b y some lucky long shots, hoodooed the Ripon bunch who lost 23 to 32.

The Sollowiiig week Wautoma came clown to Ripon hoping to trounce I . Ripon outplayed them; but missing one short shot a f te r another proved tlisastrous and they were beaten 14 to 13.

A week later Ripon triumphed over Waupun by a score of 41 to 15. Ripon played their t e s t ball of the season, showing what they were capable of doing.

In the small Gym a t Wautoma the fe!lows could r o t work their short pass as they wished. Again a few long shots gave Wautoma the game 21 to 12.

Two weeks later. Coach Lunde, with his Orange and Black Warriors took the Prison City Lads into camp by a score of 25 to 12. Waupun led a t the half mark, 10 t o 7. The old Ripon comeback proved disastrous io Waupun, Ripon outplaying them 18 to 2 in the last half. Klemp was out with injuries so Hamley juniped center a11d Jess a11d Yerk played guards. The new combination had hard work a t first getting started.

Ripon met Berlin a weelc and a half later in the College Gym. I t was the last home game of the season anti our boys triumphed over our rivals by a score of 42 to 9.

I t was thought necessary by the Oshltosh officials that Ripon should play Rosendale in an elimination contest to see which team \vould e-~te i - the tournament. The game was played in the Oshkosh Normal Gym. Ri- poi1 easily took the lead. They were never in danger of getting beaten and byon by a score of 32 to 10.

On the afternoon of the first day of the tournament Ripon met May- ville for the second time this season. The game was close throughout and a little luck on long shots toward the end on Mayville's par t combined with a little hard luck on the pa r t of our forwards on short shots allowed May- ville to win the game 17 to 20.

Ripon next met Princeton, romping away with them by a score of 48 to 5. This was the highest score made i11 any tournament this year. Hamley also made a new record a t the normal scoring fourteen field goals.

The last game was played with Fond du Lac. This game was a fight from the s ta r t to the finish. Ripon playing the better ball was defeated 19 to 20. This ended the season.

I t is interesting to note tha t three of the above players were placed on the All-Tournament Team a t Oshkosh. The three a re : Gray, Klemp, ant1 Hamley. Klemp I~eivg changed to guard by Coach Hancock of Oshkosh Normal. Kuntlc and Yerk were also given honorable mention, which makes up the Ripoil quintette.

Track Team 1922 Track was again resumed last year under the coaching of Mr. Jones.

There were very few men out and a successful teain could not be developed. But there were some goocl men out and they showetl up fairly well in the only meet of the year with Rosendale, which Ripoil won 66-48.

After two more weeks of practice the scluacl went to Madison to the State Meet. Yerk was the only man to place in the finals, getting fourth in the hurdles.

Ripon should develop a goocl squad this year. The men from last year who will be back are Tabbert, Kuncle, Klemp, Yerk, W. Diedrich. With a little coaching a wonderful scluacl can be built up. Tabbert is the captain elect and with a good man a t the head, the team is due to put Ripon on the map.
