Have you ever worked a jigsaw puzzle? They can be chal-lenging, to say the least. Sometimes they come together easi-ly…. And sometimes finding the right piece can be exasperating. Once you have finished, you end up with a beautiful picture and a great sense of accomplishment. Philanthropy is a lot like that. Some people can easily de-cide how and when to create their legacy and all the pieces eas-ily fall into place. For others, determining just exactly what their legacy will look like can be a little more elusive…. Much like finding the exact right puzzle piece. Either way, the end result is the same: an enduring legacy that will live on in our community for generations to come.

Our role at the Washington County Community Foundation is to help you find the right fit. Sometimes, when we work with donors, figuring out exactly what their charitable legacy will look like is relatively simple. Sometimes it takes several meet-ings to find the exact “right fit” for a donor. Either way, the end result is the same…. An ecstatic donor who is overjoyed at the outcome. How about you? Would you like to start working on your charitable legacy for Washington County? We would love to work with you, and rest assured, we will help you find the exact “right fit!”

“No matter where you go, there you are.”

Herman Boyd Childers often repeated this saying from Confucius: “No matter where you go, there you are.” Per-haps it was his way of reminding those around him that, at the end of the day, you have to be happy with the person you see in the mirror, and Herman was happy with the man he saw in the mirror. Herman Boyd Childers was born on September 9, 1933 at 403 West Market Street, Salem, Indiana- an address he would keep until he passed away on July 31, 2014. He graduated from Salem High School in 1951 and attended Indiana University where he studied Business. He worked in the Accounting Department at Smith Fur-niture/Child Craft for decades. As Bill Suvak, retired Presi-dent of Child Craft Industries, stated, “Herman was a sweet man with a great sense of humor and an even bigger heart. He was reliable and trustworthy. He treated the corporate funds as if they were his own.” Susan Green, a cousin to Herman, reflected, “He was such a quiet person. It

is surprising that he enjoyed being in the Drama Club in high school. Actually, he was in quite a few plays. He also played the piano and he loved to cook.” “He was a homebody,” recalled Justin Green, also a relative. “He was a person who did not em-brace change. He had the same car for 22 years. He loved old movies, antiques, and listening to Big Band music. He was a carbon copy of his Mom.” Herman had a small family and a very close circle of friends. He lost his father at the age of 7. He had a sister who died when she was a baby. So, for most of his life, it was just Herman and his Mom. He took care of her in her elder years, up until the day she died. What Herman may have lacked in immediate family, he made up for with extended family and friends. He befriended Garry Stone when Garry was fresh out of high school and just joining the workforce at Child Craft. They became lifelong buddies, going bowling on Friday nights and later taking family vacations together. “Herman loved his dogs,” reminisced Garry. “He was very close to his last dog, Fergie. She died about a year before he did.” A lifelong member of the First Christian Church, Herman grew to be a kind person with a great sense of humor. “He always had a joke,” recalled Susan. Herman was a simple man who led a simple life. In the end, this kind man left half of his estate to the people of Washington County by creating an endowed fund in our community. According to Garry, “He was just a good-hearted man who wanted to do good.”

It’s always the small pieces that make the big picture.

“Unlike wealth, there is an infinite value in legacy.”- Criss JamiWe are all about creating legacies and preserving donor intentions. It is an honor and privilege to work with people who want to create a permanent gift to

our community. In reality, these wonderful individuals make Washington County one of their heirs. Sometimes, we are their only heir.

We offer a variety of fund types to help our donors find the right fit so that they can make a gift that is meaningful to them.

In 2014, all of our different funds had a combined grantmaking impact of

over $449,000.00.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the following individuals who made our community one of their heirs:

In 1994 Burl and Carmelita

Jean established the Aware-

ness Washington County

(AWC) Fund to support the

on-going operating costs

of AWC. Awareness Wash-

ington County, in existence

since 1983, is a leadership

training program dedicated

to strengthening and transforming Washington County by

developing servant leaders. Awareness Washington Coun-

ty offers classes on an annual basis to anyone interested in

enhancing their leadership skills and working towards the

betterment of Washington County. Since 1995 the AWC

fund has issued over $55,000.00 to AWC for operational

support.

A recent AWC Class adopted the Courthouse bell as their

class project. They received an $8,000.00 grant from the

Washington County Community Foundation Touch To-

morrow Fund, the Garland and Norma Sue White Touch

Tomorrow Fund and the Bob and Clarice Morris Touch To-

morrow Fund to help with this project. Now, the Court-

house bell is ringing again!

Our Touch Tomorrow Funds are so important because no one knows what the needs of

Washington County will be in 25, 50 or 100 years. These funds are flexible to meet the

ever-changing needs of our community. Our Touch Tomorrow donors created their funds

not knowing exactly how they would be used, but confident that they would make a
