Burchfield Materials Name and Location of Repository: Burchfield Penney Arts Center, Buffalo NY Date: 1905 – 1975 Extent: 7.4 linear feet of textual records and photographs Name of Creator: Charles E. Burchfield Biographical History: Charles Ephraim Burchfield was born April 9, 1893, in Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio. Five years later, following the death of his father, his family moved to Salem, Ohio, where he graduated from high school as class valedictorian in 1911. He attended the Cleveland School of Art and studied with Henry G. Keller, Frank N. Wilcox, and William J. Eastman. In 1921, Burchfield moved to Buffalo, New York, to work for the M. H. Birge & Sons Company, one of the nation's most prominent wallpaper companies. He married Bertha Kenreich in 1922; they raised five children. Fascinated by Buffalo's streets, harbor, railroad yards, and surrounding countryside, he adopted a more realistic artistic style. Burchfield's foray into realism lasted for several years. In 1929, the Frank K. M. Rehn Galleries in New York City began representing Burchfield, allowing the artist to resign from his job as a designer to paint full-time. During this period, his works show optimism and an appreciation of American life. In the 1940s, Burchfield returned to ideas begun in early fantasy scenes that he often expanded into transcendental landscapes. Burchfield, always probing the mysteries of nature in an attempt to reveal his inner emotions, once stated, "An artist must paint not what he sees in nature, but what is there. To do so he must invent symbols, which, if properly used, make his work seem even more real than what is in front of him." He followed this artistic vision until the end of his life, creating some of his most mystical works.

Charles Ephraim Burchfield was born April 9, 1893, in Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio.
He followed this artistic vision until the end of his life, creating some of his most mystical works.

Burchfield gained acclaim through inclusion in prestigious national exhibitions, and he received numerous awards; his artistic achievement was further honored with the creation of the Charles Burchfield Center at Buffalo State College on December 9, 1966. Burchfield died on January 11, 1967.
Administrative History:
This collection of Charles E. Burchfield’s archival material had been held by the artist’s grandson, David Richter, who originally acquired its contents from his aunt, Louise Burchfield, and his grandmother, Bertha K. Burchfield. In the 1970’s, David Richter loaned his collection of his grandfather’s archival materials to the Burchfield Penney Art Center. The collection came in two components; the first in 1977, and the second in 1979. The correspondences and notes of Charles Burchfield were purchased from the Richter family in 2004 for the Burchfield Penney Art Center due to a generous gift by the Peter Vogt family in honor of Edna Lindemann. Scope and Content: The Richter Vogt Collection of Charles E. Burchfield Materials contains seminal archival primary source materials pertinent to understanding Charles E. Burchfield and his art with greater depth and detail. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, autobiographical notes by C.E.B., clippings, exhibition catalogues, and photographs. In addition there is original art by Burchfield in the form of doodles, notebooks, woodcut blocks, copper plates, drawings and sketches, as well as a few examples of art by other artists, such as J. J. Lankes, William J. Schwanekamp, and Charles W. Norton. The Correspondence includes hundreds of items written by and to Burchfield, other artists, his art dealers, art institutions that exhibited and collected his work, collectors, and family members. Correspondence can be found primarily in Binders 1 – 13, and in Box 1. A detailed inventory of the contents of the binders and boxes is included in this document. Binders 16 – 17 contain notes and essays written by Charles E. Burchfield regarding his childhood and development. Bertha K. Burchfield also writes in these biographical notes as well. Binders 14 and 15 contain correspondence, notes, and biographical content. During the past thirty years, different identification structures which have been utilized with the collection. Charles Burchfield’s original order for the totality of the collection has been lost, but there are many general themes and groupings which have been identified. Prior to the purchase of the collection in 2004, it was professionally appraised, wherein the appraiser created an outline of the collection of 1500+ items. This outline was used as the basis of the accession numbering system once acquired, but the act of matching letters with preassigned numbers was challenging. Since the structure for the accession numbers originated with an appraiser and does not show original order, materials in Boxes 1-3 are not listed in order according to the accession number but are rather grouped according to series. In the boxes of primary source materials, some numbering errors were identified and corrected, or taken into account. Rather than renumber everything following the error, the unaccounted for files

were included by using the suffix “a” “b” “c” etc. For example, A2004.011.1147a, A2004.011.1147b are not sub-elements of A2004.011.1147, but rather follow adjacent. The Richter Vogt Collection has been divided into the following series: Series 1: Correspondence Series 2: CEB writings Series 3: Biographical and life materials Series 4: Artistic career
