* * 0 The Rich Young
Ruler!Mk. 10:21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him,
"One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and
give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and
follow Me."
* * 0It’s interesting how people accept
things, just because they hear them!“The rich young rule”
●Mt. 19:16-22 “one, young man, great possessions”●Mk. 10:17-22 “one, he, great
possessions”●Lk. 18:18-23 “certain ruler, he,
very rich”
* * 0 I. The Coming! Mk. 10:17-18 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt
before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but
One, that is, God.●Mark adds something here that is not found in the other accounts!–The manner of his coming!–When is the last time we found
ourselves “running” to be in the presence of Jesus?
* * 0The “Urgency” this young man
had to find Jesus!Is this an example that we should
follow?●Mt 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”●Rev 22:17 And the Spirit and the
bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
* * 0 What happens next?
Mk 10:17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt
before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit
eternal life?"●We find him asking, we find him seeking, but is he willing to knock? To move into action? Are we willing?●“Good Teacher, what shall I do?”
–I cannot help but wonder if he is wanting to try and get there alone? –Can we get there alone? (Rom. 3:10-
12)
* * 0 II. The Command! Mk. 10:19-20 "You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not bear false witness,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and your mother.' And he answered and said to Him, "Teacher, all
these things I have kept from my youth."●Could any of us have answered as
he did?–I know that I couldn’t!–Maybe this is why he thought he could
get there alone!●Cf. Lk. 7:47
* * 0 When faced with God’s
commands how do we respond?Would you say that he loved the
Lord?●Jn 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments.”●Jn 14:21 "He who has My
commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."●Jn 14:23 “Jesus answered and said to
him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”
* * 0 III. The Condition!Mk. 10:21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and
give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and
follow Me."●When this young man declared he had keep all the commandments, how did Jesus respond?–“Stop lying and tell the truth!” No!!!–“Jesus, looking at him, loved him!” ●But he still was coming up short!
* * 0 “One thing you lack!”Mt. 19:21 “If you want to be perfect!” Lk.
18:22 “You still lack one thing!”●How many of us only lack one
thing?●How many does it take to come
up short?–Js 2:10 For whoever shall keep the
whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.–Js 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows
to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
* * 0 You are asking too much!
Mk. 10:21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to
the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and
follow Me."●All of us are willing to go from the pit to the palace, but what about from the palace to the pit? Will we give up everything for Jesus?
●Lk. 9:23 Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
* * 0 IV. The
Consequence!Mk 10:22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great
possessions.●All his coming, asking and effort is gone in a moment! He is not willing to pay the price of being a servant!●He is not willing to give up his
money for the Master!●He has come to the Lord with
“joy” but now leaves with “sadness!”
* * 0 Always all or nothing!
●MK 12:30 'And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment.–We have to be “all in!”–There are no “part-time
Christians!”●Many want the rewards, without
submitting to God’s requirements and requests!
* * 0 Conclusion:
●Is there something in your life that is holding you back from eternal life?–Then give it to the Lord, He is
better!●If there is something we value
more than God? Then, we too are in a “sad” condition! God will never take second place! It is always gold with Him!●May we never come to value
the things of this world more than the glory of Heaven!
