War
The SidesThe Americans• Had half as
many troops• Mostly
untrained army• Had supply
difficulties • Helped by the
French
The British• Had twice as
many troops• One of the best
trained armies in the word and the best navy
• Well supplied• Hired Hessian
Soldiers
The American Army• Around 20% of the American
armies were composed of Minute Men
• Minute Men were a quick, elite group who could be gathered in mere minutes
• The Militia was large section of the American armies
• They had been trained before the beginning of the war
• Most soldiers were untrained and needed much training to stand a chance in war
Supplies for the American Army
• Supplying the American Army was very difficult
• Not many factories to make goods
• Little faith in new American money made things difficult to buy
• Had trouble arming, clothing, feeding , and providing camping supplies for their army
• An estimated 2,500 men died from disease, hunger, and exposure at Valley Forge
• "To see the men without clothes to cover their nakedness, without blankets to lie upon, without shoes... without a house or hut to cover
them until those could be built, and submitting without a murmur, is a proof of patience and obedience which, in my opinion, can scarcely be paralleled."
- General George Washington at Valley Forge on April 21, 1778
French Help
• The French joined the War mainly to fight the British
• However they did not agree to join until there was hope America might win
• The French would help with much needed supplies of goods and men
• They would also help train the American armies
