FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DINGA The annual celebration of the
Incarnation, the mystery of God-made-Man, is so significant in the
life of the Church and in the liturgical calendar that, as is also
the case with Easter, we have what is called an “Octave,” meaning
eight days, which extends through New Year’s Day. This means that
each day of the Octave is celebrated as if it were Christmas Day
itself. The Christmas season extends through the Feast of the
Baptism of the Lord which this year is January 10. Within the
Octave, we celebrate this weekend the Feast of the Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. We seek to follow the example of the Holy
Family of Nazareth in living out the virtues of being members of
God's family- the family of faith- which is the Church, the body of
Christ. We strive to be faithful witnesses of the gospel among the
members of our own families so as to encour-age them to journey
together with us along our pilgrim-age of faith to the fulfillment
of our ultimate goal to live in heaven with God and dwell in his
house forever. We particularly look to the example of Joseph,
husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, as Pope Francis has
de-creed that this coming year will be the “Year of Saint Joseph”
in honor of the 150th Anniversary of his being declared as Patron
of the Universal Church. Also during the Christmas Octave is the
Feast of St. John the Evangelist, who gives us a tremendous
witness, through his Gospel and his letters, to the love God has
for us in sending his only Son into the world as the Word made
flesh, and as the Beloved Disciple- representing all of us as
members of the Church- was entrusted with the care of our Blessed
Mother from the foot of the cross. On his feast, we hear the gospel
account of the Resurrection, so important is the connection between
what happened at Bethlehem on that first Christmas and what
happened on Calvary and the empty tomb on that first Easter. His
feast is normally celebrated on December 27, but since it falls on
a Sunday this year, we will celebrate this patronal feast day of
St. John the Evangelist Parish on Wednesday, December 30 at 6:00
PM. On New Year’s Day, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy
Mother of God (the octave day of Christ-mas), which is normally a
holy day of obligation. Masses for this Feast will be celebrated at
5:00pm (December 31) at St. Rose and 10:00am (January 1) at St.
John. We honor Mary not only as the mother of Jesus but as truly
the Mother of God, fittingly when we celebrate the mystery of God
becoming flesh and taking on our humanity. And so let us entrust
ourselves, our Church, and our world to her intercession as our
Mother and pray that she will draw us more closely to her Son, the
Light of the world and Prince of Peace, as we leave such a
dif-ficult year behind, and enter into a new year full of hope for
what is ahead.

As the Sanctuary Lights burn to remind us of the Real Presence
of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, we remember Tom Lazarchik (SJ)
and honor the 75th Wedding Anniversary of Alfred & Olim-
pia Diana (SR). The candles were provided for us by Toni
Lazarchik & Family (SJ) and the daughters of Alfred &
Olimpia Diana.
At the request of the Pantry, St. John the Evangelist will be
collecting 4-Packs of toilet tissue for the months of
January/February 2021. The Pantry would like to be able to hand out
something easy along with the box from the Food Bank in the monthly
distribu-tion. After this, hopefully we will resume our regular
monthly collection. The 4-Pack of toilet tissue may be left in the
gathering are of St. John when the church is open (Saturday
evening, Sunday morning, Monday—after Mass + the church is open
until 3pm and Friday—after Mass + the church is open until 3pm.).
Thank you for your help with this request! Any questions? Call

***GUIDELINE REMINDERS*** As we prepare to most likely be
welcoming visi-tors with us at our partner parishes at Christmas,
who may not be familiar with what is required of us at this time,
especially during the liturgy; it will be helpful for all of us to
be reminded of the fol-lowing points: Remain six feet apart from
the person in front
of you in the line to receive communion. As the priest or
extraordinary minister places
the host in your hand, first step aside, remove your mask, and
then receive.
Encouraged to make use of hand sanitizer
when entering church. Experts inform us that one needs to be
within
six feet of someone without wearing a mask for at least 15
minutes in order to be at risk for contracting the virus, which
does not happen during the liturgy.
Limiting parish office traffic, during this busy
time of the year- call or email if possible.

BELL RINGING REQUEST The Association of Churches of Scottdale is
asking every church to ring a bell for five minutes at 6pm on the
Sunday after Christmas, December 27, and New Year’s Day, January 1.
The
COVID-19 pandemic has affected lives and restricted social
contact. Throughout history, bells have carried a message and have
brought people together, thus the request for a ringing of the
bells.
Thank you Community Foundation of Fayette County for donating
masks to our Partner Parish of St. John the Evangelist and St.
Rose! The masks are available to those who need
them when visiting our Parishes. The CFFC helps define
charitable needs, connects donors with causes that matter to them,
supports nonprofit organizations and invests charitable assets to
make the community a better place to live. Visit
www.cffayettepa.org. St. John Feast Day Ticket Reminder: Please
turn in your St. John Feast Day ticket money and stubs to Karen
Stynchula this week-end. If any questions, please call either Mary
Repko (724) 493-1491 or Karen Stynchula (724) 433-7862.
Thank you !
MISSION CO-OP COLLECTION The Mission Co-Op collection will be
held the week-end of January 9/10 . Due to the current pandemic, we
are unable to have a representative attend in person to have this
Appeal at either of our Partner Parishes this year. However, we are
still taking up a collection to send to them as they depend on our
financial assistance and material help. So, please be as generous
as you are able. Thank you! 2020-21 National Christmas Artwork
