The workshop, which is being organised by the Selwyn District Council and supported by the Selwyn Arts Trust is the second opportunity for the newly established Selwyn Writers Network to meet.

The first meeting of the new network in February attracted over 40 writers and the publishing workshop is planned for 6.30pm on Tuesday, May 24 at the Lincoln Event Centre.

Selwyn Arts Advisor Rachael Inch says the workshop is being organised as previous surveys of local writers have identified that they wanted to receive more information about how to publish their works.

“Jenny Howarth from Wilys Publications will be presenting the workshop. She is a New Zealand novelist, non-fiction writer and journalist with a Masters degree in history.

“Jenny will cover how to approach a traditional book publisher including writing a synopsis, cover letter and

“The workshop will also look at the advantages and risks of self-publishing, the importance of reviews and how authors can get their books into shops and libraries.”

Selwyn Arts Advisor Rachael Inch is encouraging budding Selwyn writers to attend a workshop aimed at helping them get their work published.

Brendon and Hayley have won $5,000 in prize money and will take home the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Steak of Origin Grand Champion shield.

The Angus X steak was deemed to be the most tender and tasty in the country by a line-up of top New Zealand chefs at the weekend’s Grand Final taste test.

Judges, Shaun Clouston, Scott Kennedy, Rex Morgan and Graham Hawkes determined the winner from 20 finalists based on criteria such as aroma, tenderness, juiciness and taste.

Rex Morgan said that having that many quality steaks together is an exciting opportunity for a chef.

Steak of Origin winnersBrendon and Hayley Robinson from Hawera have taken out the Grand Champion title at the 2016 Steak of Origin competition with their Angus X sirloin steak.

Beef + Lamb NZ chief executive Sam McIvor, left, with 2016 Steak of Origin winners Hayley and Brendon Robinson from Hawera.

“Every steak was unique with a different story to tell; the challenge was comparing them each on their own merit,” Mr Morgan said.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s chief executive, Sam McIvor said the competition, which is in its 14th year, aims to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of New Zealand beef farmers.

“We have some of the best product in the world and without our farmers it would simply not be possible, it’s important that we take the time to celebrate their successes and their contribution to our thriving industry,” Mr McIvor said.

Ten agricultural science students attracted media attention in 1961 for pushing a standard hospital bed around Hagley Park for three days non-stop, clocking up a distance of nearly 500km.

The goal was to break a ‘bed-pushing’ record set by a group of Massey students, and the Lincoln team good-naturedly boasted at the time that their effort had set a new Australasian record.

One of the ‘bed-pushers’, Lincoln University Honorary Associate Professor Peter Nuthall, organised the reunion with fellow bed-pusher Allan Frazer.

“Everyone gets on well, as we were a close group of friends as students, and this has stayed the same after 55 years,” Dr Nuthall said.

Dr Nuthall and Mr Frazer took their fellow alumni and bed-pushers on a campus tour and then the group enjoyed lunch together at Lincoln’s Food and Function Centre, Te Kete Ika.

They also visited Hudson Hall, where

most of them had resided at various stages during their time at the University.

The bed-pushers have reunited several times over the years, including

The opening of the hall will bring a smile to the faces of the Greenpark community following several trying years which saw the demolition of the old hall due to earthquake damage and the closure of the Greenpark School in 2012.

“It has been a bit of a journey but we are really looking forward to having the hall officially opened this Sunday,” chair of the Greenpark Memorial Community Committee chair Terry Lassen said.

The hall’s $850,000 rebuild was funded principally by an insurance payout but community fundraising was also needed to outfit the new hall.

“We engaged the services of Fiona Davidson from Springfield to help us

raise the additional funds and she has done a fabulous job,” Mr Lassen said.

Two large brass plaques which list local residents who served and lost their lives in two world wars were saved from the old hall and have been given a clean up and hung in the new hall.

“It is important we have this link to our past,” Mr Lassen said.

“Eventually we want to bring the actual war memorial itself from across the road a re-site it next to the hall.”

The hall’s original foundation stone will be re-laid at the site of the new hall at the opening ceremony at 2pm on Sunday. The World War Honours Boards will also be rededicated by local RSA president Ivan Norton.

Greenpark Memorial Community Committee secretary Lynn Eggleston, left, and, chair Terry Lassen are looking forward to the official opening of the new Greenpark Hall this weekend.

For the trees you care about and the dangerous trees you worry about.

Cultural and heritage facilities play an important role in our communities, both economically and socially. In recognition of this, the Government has launched a Regional Culture and Heritage Fund (RCHF), worth an average of $6.67 million a year in perpetuity, to support regional cultural centres.

The fund is to replace and update the Regional Museums Policy (RMP), which has done a good job of supporting museum projects. However the scope of the RMP has been limited, which is why theatres, opera houses and other cultural facilities important to our regions haven’t been able to access it.

These changes broaden the scope of the fund to make it much more flexible and comprehensive, and therefore able to support a wide range of important regional institutions which may be struggling to get the capital required for much-needed projects.

The Government has also recognised that the requirement for collections to be of national significance hasn’t

Funding for regional facilitiesby Amy Adams Selwyn MP

necessarily been fairly reflecting the importance to local communities of regional museums and art galleries that don’t necessarily meet that national criteria.

While open to applicants from throughout New Zealand, the RCHF’s primary focus is to support capital projects outside the main centres.

The RCHF is not a substitute for local council funding, community fundraising and philanthropy, but an addition to it. Projects will need to show they have the backing of their local authority and community as part of the application process in the same way as they did under the RMP.

Applications currently under consideration for RMP funding will continue to be eligible for the now more broadly focused RCHF.

The first round of the RCHF opened on May 5 with a closing date of July 1. Applicant information is available on the Ministry for Culture and Heritage website – www.mch.govt.nz/regionalcultureheritagefund.

If you asked the majority of intermediate students if they knew how our government was structured, you wouldn’t expect them to know. If you asked high school students if they knew, would you expect them to know? If you asked the average New Zealander if they knew you would expect them to know, surely.

According to a recent survey by University of Auckland, on average only 35% of enrolled New Zealanders have a working understanding of our government. Even less than that, only 8% of high school students understand how laws that directly affect them are made.

In 2013 local government election turnout in Selwyn was 43%, one of the lowest in New Zealand. Selwyn also has the lowest level of turnout for 18 to 24 year olds in local body and national elections.

It isn’t the absence of engagement though, but rather the absence of education both at school and at home on the topic. Ask yourselves if you

understand the ins and outs of the legislative, executive and judiciary branches of our government.

It’s time for Selwyn to become more invested in local and national politics, to develop our understanding of the mechanisms which keep our district ever expanding.

This coming local body election perhaps take the time to talk to your children, neighbours and friends about what you want to see changed in Selwyn.

Local government controls more than you think; greater awareness is beneficial to everyone. The more our community understands the importance of local government, greater representation will be achieved.

Selwyn Youth Council holds learning as one of its values. We can all learn more, so I hope that this year you will feel more inclined to teach your fledgling 18 year olds or uni students at home how they can make a difference.

Political engagementThis year’s local body elections will be held in October but one of the greatest issues today for New Zealanders is civics literacy. Be more specific in the way that civics (the study of the rights and duties of citizenship) is taught, or rather not taught, in schools and the home.

CPL Amy Baynes is originally from Gore but is now based at Burnham Military Camp near Rolleston. She had been deployed to Bougainville, Banda Aceh, and the Arabian Gulf before being injured in a fall while on patrol

in Afghanistan. “The fall injured my hip and

back which left me requiring a hip replacement. I also have ongoing back issues, with the likelihood of surgery to address four tears to my vertebrae,”

Corporal Kelly Whittle celebrates her bronze medal in the discus event at the 2016 Invictus Games.

CPO Baynes said. The games also promote the

support that families of service personnel provide. CPO Baynes’s husband and sister were with her to celebrate her victory.

Her husband Ross Baynes said it was absolutely amazing to see Amy succeed at her second Invictus Games, after picking up a bronze medal at her previous games in 2014.

“It’s been a long road for her. She has worked hard and she deserves it. I’m super proud, I couldn’t have a bigger smile on my face,” Ross said.

It was also the second games for Corporal Kelly Whittle who won a silver medal in the same discus event in 2014.

“The other competitors were much stronger this year, they came out and smashed it,” she said.

“It’s not quite the colour I wanted,

but it’s all about participating and I’m stoked with the success.”

Cpl Whittle, who has served for more than 13 years in the New Zealand Army, was cheered on by family and friends as she took the podium.

Her Mother, Michelle Leonard, was first to greet her following the event.

“I am so proud of Kelly. To me, it doesn’t matter what colour the medal is, it’s about seeing her do her best, even during her recovery.”

Cpl Whittle injured her hip while helping a wounded Afghan local in Baghak, Afghanistan, and later injured her shoulder in a fall. She credits the Invictus Games as an important part of her personal journey.

“Mentally, the Invictus Games has made a huge difference for me. Using sport as part of my recovery has had a massive impact, it gives me a goal, something to work towards.”

The Selwyn District Council is holding a series of drop-in sessions where people can find out more about the Malvern and Ellesmere draft Area Plans beginning in Dunsandel tonight.

“The area plans will guide the growth of townships in Ellesmere and Malvern through to 2031,” council’s strategy and policy planner Andrew Mactier said.

“The plans include options for where residential and business development could occur, if needed, and future council infrastructure and services projects that may be needed in different townships.”

Although the plan does not rezone any land, it will inform the District Plan Review, which starts this year, along with other council plans and privately initiated plan changes.

Malvern councillor Sam Broughton said the area plans are the key strategic planning documents for our rural towns.

“It has been great to see the involvement of members of our communities throughout the process

Malvern and Ellesmere future plansMalvern and Ellesmere residents are being encouraged to have their say on draft area plans being prepared for their areas.

and hope that this continues as we refine a way forward.,” Cr Broughton said.

“Locals often understand their needs and solutions to those needs better than anyone else and these documents reflect their ambitions.

“The council has put plenty of resource into planning for our larger towns which has been very important and these area plans bring that focus to all our smaller settlements like Springfield and Doyelston.

“As these documents will inform the district plan review it is important that people share their views now, and let us know if council planning is heading in the right direction or needs to be tweaked.”

Ellesmere councillor Pat McEvedy said he hopes council has captured as many of the aspirations as possible for the communities of the Malvern and Ellesmere areas,

“I encourage people to read what pertains to them and come along to the drop in sessions to see what it's

all about, and then put in a submission.”The drop-in sessions begin at the

Dunsandel Rugby Clubrooms tonight at 6.30pm, with others to follow at the Leeston Library Meeting Room, Sunday, May 22 at 1pm, the Southbridge Hall on Thursday, May 26 (6.30pm), the Darfield Recreation Centre on Sunday, May 29 (1pm) and Thursday June 2 (6.30pm),

the Glentunnel Hall on Monday, May 30 (6.30pm), and the Springfield Hall on Wednesday, June 1 at 6.30pm.

Submissions are open until noon on Monday, June 3 and Submissions can be made online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/areaplans. Submission forms can also be picked up from a council library or service centre.

One proposal in the Ellesmere draft area plans is to look at intensification opportunities close to the Leeston town centre to provide more housing options.

In Section 2 Waihora secured a playoff spot with a narrow 14-13 away win over Ashley, which allowed Darfield to move into second spot, one point ahead of Ashley, following the Malvern side’s 39-21 win over Hornby.

Rakaia, with a 31-6 win over Ohoka, sits in fourth, one point behind Ashley, while Celtic following its 62-14 thrashing of Prebbleton is two points adrift of Rakaia.

A Darfield win over Celtic this weekend will secure it a playoff spot. Rolleston’s Brad Milne can’t find a way through a swarming BDI defence.

The defending champion has made an unblemished beginning to the season with five wins in a row to open up an 11 point lead in the premier division.

While there are some new faces in the Lincoln line up it has retained its dynamic shooting duo of Hannah Wilson and Courtney Cramond while its mid-court again features the experience of Charlene Porima at centre and Vanessa Robinson at wing attack.

Greenpark moved into a share of second place with a close fought 54-49 win over Rolleston, which retained a share of second spot despite the loss.

A 50-43 Broadfield win over Halswell A has moved it into fourth spot on points’ differential.

Broadfield started the encounter strongly and open a good lead but Halswell came back into the match in the final two quarters to close the gap.

Selwyn and Mary Manning signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Lincoln University Foundation recently to mark the creation of the Manning Seed Awards, which are dedicated to furthering education in seed science and seed technology for the benefit of New Zealand

“The seed industry is sometimes overlooked for funding, as a lot of people don’t realise how significant it is,” Mr Manning said.

“These awards are our way of giving back to a vital sector of New Zealand’s agricultural industry, which has given our family so much for so many years.”

Lincoln University Professor of Agronomy Bruce McKenzie said the seed industry is vitally important to the New Zealand economy.

“Everything we grow comes from seeds, so their importance cannot be underestimated. We’re committed at Lincoln to helping improve the knowledge of those who will be going on to work in the seed industry.”

Professor McKenzie said the awards could be used in a number of different ways, including providing postgraduate students with scholarships to improve their training in the seed science area, funding for seed research and upskilling

Gift to help grow seed industryA former Lincoln University student who went on to carve out an illustrious career in the seed industry has provided a significant boost to seed science education in New Zealand.

Lincoln staff. Mr Manning studied at Lincoln

College from 1962 to 1968 and gained a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and a Master of Agricultural Science in agricultural microbiology.

In addition to many other career highlights, he was instrumental in the development of New Zealand Agriseeds in 1987, the first Southern Hemisphere company to create unique, scientifically-proven, proprietary pasture cultivars.

“As one of four founding shareholders, Selwyn was managing director of Agriseeds for 21 years,” Lincoln University Alumni and Development Director Jo Brady said.

“By the time he retired in 2010, the company had business interests in Australia, South Africa and South America, with more than 100 staff and global sales in excess of $50 million.”

Mr Manning also became involved in the wider seed industry during his time at Agriseeds, chairing the New Zealand Seed Quality Management Authority, presiding over the New Zealand Plant Breeding and Research Association for several terms and becoming the first person from the Southern Hemisphere to serve as president of the International Seed Federation.

This fungicide contains the active ingredient oxathiapiprolin, an ingredient not previously approved under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act.

“After assessing the benefits, risks and costs associated with this herbicide during the various stages of its life cycle, the EPA decision-making committee approved the application for the release of Zorvec Enicade Fungicide with controls, in accordance with the HSNO act,” EPA’s Applications and Assessment general manager Sarah Gardner said.

Controls are conditions or rules imposed on the approval that restrict the use of the substance to ensure people and the environment are protected properly when it is used, for

Fungicide for onion mildewThe Environmental Protection Authority has approved with controls an application for the release of DuPont Zorvec Enicade Fungicide.

example controls might require users to wear protective masks or gloves when spraying.

“In this case the additional controls include the setting of application rates, minimum intervals between spraying, maximum number of applications, restriction to ground-based application methods, and restriction against application onto or into water. These controls must be set out on the product label,” Mrs Gardner said.

Zorvec Enicade Fungicide is an oil dispersion formulation to be applied to onion foliage by boom spray methods. It is intended to be applied up to two times per crop cycle for the control of downy mildew in onions, with a minimum of 10 days between applications.

‘Who you turn to for tyres’

It has been a busy few weeks for the West Melton Young Farmers Club.

We held our social bonfire night in April with a great turnout. Filling out the health and safety forms made it far more challenging.

We also had a group of members head along into Christchurch to hear Synlait Milk’s chairman Graeme Milne speak. It was an extremely informative evening covering his roles within several companies.

We welcome Steph onto our committee as secretary as due to study and work commitments our current secretary needed to step down.

Our mental health committee has been hard at work also securing a date for the seminar on the 6th August, at the West Melton community hall. We are currently in the process of securing a guest speaker and tickets will be

available once details are confirmed.Over the coming months we are

holding our Gumboot Challenge against Dunsandal young farmers. This is going to be a hilarious competition to claim the boot back off them. We welcome anyone from the community to head along and support our club on June 4. All the details are on our Facebook page. We’re also heading off to support the red and black against the Waratahs, so we’ll be cheering for the win.

Also we are planning our big trip down to Timaru for the New Zealand Young Farmer Grand Final to support our Tasman competitor James Hoban. This is a huge weekend for young farmers and will be enjoyed by all.

Our next meeting will be June 13 at the West Melton Tavern at the new time of 7.30pm.

Mr Heaton and Mr Streeter launched their ePump solar water pump last December and strong demand nationally and internationally has led to them signing a major distribution partnership with one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of dairy systems and technology, Waikato Milking Systems.

Mr Streeter said sales well exceeded expectations for the solar water pumps over the El Nino affected summer as farmers attempted to keep stock water troughs full.

“We’ve struggled to keep up with demand with up to 30 ePump enquiries a day, as well as manufacturing the units. The best solution to keep up with

Solar powered water pump popular with farmersHawke’s Bay innovators Shane Heaton and Gavin Streeter ambitions of using solar power to get water to remote farmland, as well as international disaster relief missions, has taken a major step forward.

demand and production was to partner with a reputable global firm that offers strong distribution channels.

“Waikato Milking Systems has distributors through the US, South America, South Africa, Russia, Europe, UK, Ireland and Asia. They have relationships in these regions, we don’t, so it makes sense to partner with them.”

Waikato Milking Systems’ CEO, Dean Bell said the company is best known as one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of rotary and herringbone milking platforms and technology.

“However, we are always looking to work with like-minded, innovative

companies whose products or services answer a particular need.”

The system is fully automatic and operates like a standard pumping system. It has some SMART features to maximise the pumping time and protect the motor.

The ePump can pump up to 120 metres of head and up to 20 litres per minute in daylight hours and can withstand the harshest environments. It can fill stock troughs on hillsides up

to 120 metres on hill country and unlike other options it can draw both clean and dirty water.

The Geraldine farmers got out of dairying in 2002 to concentrate on breeding and rearing Highland cattle, establishing the Gralie Highland cattle fold on their property.

Pam Leslie says they got their first Highland cattle in 1999.

“We accidently got involved with the breed,” she says.

“We both have Scottish ancestry and we met a dairy farmer who had some unexpected calves as a Highland bull had jumped the fence in with his cows so we acquired the calves.

by Ann Morgan

Former dairy farmers David and Pam Leslie have a new love, one they are addicted to.

“They are a little bit addictive and once you get a baby one, that's it. They are easy to love.”

While they started the love affair with the cross-breed calves they moved into pure-breds and then full-bloods.

“There isn’t much difference between them. You can trace the full-bloods back to Scotland. The pure breed were graded up from a foundation beef cow, this takes four crosses to get to a P1.”

Pam says they currently have 50 Highland cattle on the farm, of which 20 are breeding cows.

David Leslie says it is very therapeutic spending time brushing the Highland cattle.

An accidental love

“We have just culled down from 150 as it was a hobby that got out of control.”

Pam says the beasts can come in six different colours and they are exciting to breed as you never know what each calf will come out looking like.

“I have ended up with black calves from my red cow and black bull, but my black bull and black cow gave me a red calf.

“I have a few white ones but they can get a bit grubby looking, most people like the red, yellow or black.”

She says their look and their nature make them a little bit different.

“They have the long hair and big wide horns. When we put them on the roadside paddocks, people stop to take photos and we have had to put signs up saying electric fences and try and stop

them getting in with the stock. “The cattle are a bit tricky when they

have calves, they are really good mothers and still have their ancient mothering ability. This means if you get too close the mother can get overprotective of her calf.”

Pam says the breed doesn't put weight on as quickly as other cattle so they are not as economically viable.

“It is more of a niche market for the meat. Fattening for beef is not very viable due to the time it takes and costs of dehorning and their hair can get caught up in the abattoir machinery making things difficult.

“They don't look large but you get a lot of meat off them for their size. The meat is slightly marbled and is believed to be high in iron and protein with low cholesterol.”

Pam says the breed isn’t all about the meat either.

“Their skins are good for floor rugs. We freeze the hide and send it to Invercargill for processing, while some people use the horns for deer calling or carving.”

She says the breed's temperament is really good.

“If you handle them regularly they remember what they are taught. If they are not handled they can get flighty.

“It's quite therapeutic to go and give them a brush out in the paddock, you stand there and groom them and can make them look all pretty.

“If you have too many in the same paddock they all want to be brushed at the same time which can get problematic.”

She says the cattle sit flatter on their

feet than others so there is less pugging on the ground.

“They saunter along very flat but this can give them problem feet as they don’t wear their hooves down. Their feet probably stopped them sinking in the moors in Scotland.”

Pam says there was a big boom in Highland cattle 10 years ago, but now they are declining in numbers.

“Some people have done a wonderful job keeping some of the lines going. Getting semen into the country can be difficult.”

David and Pam are now downsizing and will keep 20 cattle.

“Last year we sold eight to be hand reared. They make wonderful pets and are ideal for a lifestyle block as long as you have good fencing and are aware of their long horns.”

Highland cattle come in six colours and the colour is only known at the time of birth. Highland cattle are flat footed and have long horns and, according to Pam Leslie, pleasant personalities.

Pamper your pets

You’ll save livesMany animals are sadly euthanased

every year purely for want of a good home.

A number of things contribute to this - they include (but are not limited to) too many people giving up their pets, too few adopting new pets and too few people spaying or neutering their pets.

There is a limit to the number of animals a shelter can house, hence the decision has to be made to euthanase healthy animals within a certain time frame. Rescuing a pet will help reduce the number of animals euthanased.

If you adopt one pet, you actually save the lives of two animals – the one you adopt plus the one that takes its place at the rescue shelter.

The benefits of a rescue petby Yolande Howell BVSc (Hons), Selwyn Veterinary Centre

If you are thinking of getting a new pet to join the family, there are many good reasons to rescue instead of buying one.

You’ll save money Rescue organisations charge far

less than breeders or pet stores. Most adoption fees range from $80 to $200, and in addition they are usually spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

Buying a pet from a pet store or breeder often means you’ll be paying at least $500 to $3000 depending on the breed of the animal.

If you have set your mind on a purebred animal, rescue organisations also have purebred animals and breed specific rescue organisations also exist.

Generally speaking, a mixed breed pet may be healthier in that they are less likely to have a genetic problem and thus cheaper to insure.

Do your research.

You’ll get a great petMost rescue organisations have a

system whereby animals are examined and vaccinated by a vet prior to arrival or at the start of their stay.

Due to the limited space of rescue shelters, animals selected for adoption are screened for their temperaments and behaviours. Most shelters will be able to help match pets with prospective families.

You will not be supporting pet farms. Pet farms, or mills, are pet breeding factories housing hundreds of animals for the sole purpose of breeding for profit.

Animal Welfare standards are low to non-existent, the animals may be housed in poor conditions and have no access to veterinary care. There are

many reports of health and behaviour problems due to inbreeding and lack of human contact.

Most of these pet mills sell to pet stores, or via the internet or newspaper classifieds. This has been a hot topic with increased media coverage recently.

Other benefits of rescuing a pet include a wider range of pets to choose from depending on your circumstance, puppy and kittens are adorable but they require a lot of time and input. Adult animals also make brilliant pets and may already be house trained as an added bonus.

Most rescue organisation also provide ongoing support, they want to ensure the pets go to good homes and are more than happy to help with any questions or problems.

We work to find forever homes for our lovely bull breed dogs and have a collection of beautiful doggies looking for a second chance in life.

Neutering can be done on common pets such as cats, dogs, rabbits and rodents. It is best to discuss this with your veterinarian. Your vet will be able to advise you when the best time is to neuter your pet.

The procedures are done under general anaesthesia, and you will be amazed how well animals recover from their operations.

The benefits of neutering are numerous. First and foremost we want to control overpopulation of animals - each year thousands of animals end up homeless in shelters and are euthanased.

Homeless cats are also culled by trapping and shooting in many places in New Zealand.

Secondly, diseases such as testicular cancer in males and mammary cancer in females may be prevented by neutering. Talk to your vet and discuss when the best time is to neuter your pet to prevent these conditions.

Thirdly, neutering reduces, and can eliminate, unwanted behaviours.

These include urine spraying or marking.

Animals are also less likely to roam and escape your property once they are neutered as hormones play a huge role in this sort of behaviour, and a female in season can attract a lot of unwanted attention in the neighbourhood.

Many animals are also more settled and calmer once neutered and in some cases it will dramatically reduce aggressive behaviour.

Fourth, a female dog in season can lead to unwanted matings, false

Neutering your precious petby Yolande Howell BVSc (Hons), Selwyn Veterinary Centre

Neutering means the removal of an animal’s reproductive organ. In males it is commonly referred to as castration and in females it is referred to as spaying.

pregnancies and also it is really messy. A bitch in season can bleed for up to three weeks.

Fifth, if you have pet siblings that are not neutered, they are likely to mate. Animals don’t have the same respect as humans to family relationships. Siblings will mate with each other and in-bred offspring are prone to birth defects and deformities.

In addition, there are lots of common myths or old wives tales regarding neutering such as:

“My pet is going to miss his testicles. And he’ll be less of a man” – No, animals do not have any sentimental attachment to their reproductive organs. And no, animals do not have egos like humans do.

“My pet is going to get fat after neutering.” – Their metabolism may change but with the appropriate diet and feeding habits, weight gain is preventable.

“I heard that it is better to let her to have one litter first.” – There is no health benefit to your pet’s health in having a litter. There are too many animals out there already.

“I want my children to experience the miracle of birth.” – Children should be taught how precious life is and to look after their pets well. Allowing their pet to have pups or kittens is teaching them that animals can be given away or sold as commodities.

So please be a responsible owner and neuter your pet. There are too many animals that end up in rescue centres and shelters around the world and they can’t all be saved.

However, it won’t be all fabulous autumnal weather to look forward to this winter, as it is still supposed to rain and cold snaps and frosts are to be expected from time to time. So winter will still be winter – just a touch warmer than normal.

The problem is this can cause a few issues in the garden.

I was looking forward to a good cold winter, as there is nothing nicer than snuggling up to a roaring fire with a mug of homemade pumpkin soup.

But also I was relying on the freezing temperatures to take care of the pests and diseases that ravaged my garden all summer long. This has been a brutal year for pests, especially the Cabbage White Butterfly.

There is nothing like a good hard freeze or two to reduce the numbers of overwintering pests and disease or at the very least slow them down. It is almost worth hoping for a cold spring

Is a warm winter a blessing or a curse?by Sarah O’Neill, www.gogardening.co.nz

May is like a gate way month that eases us into the cold weather, although, this year’s weather is warmer than usual.

to slow down their emergence from their winter dormancy to give the seedlings a head start.

A good frost is also said to be great for soil structure. With each freeze the moisture in the soil expands and when it defrosts the soil crumbles a bit. If this happens often enough then the need for a lot of heavy digging to get a lovely fine tilth to sow seeds into isn’t such hard work.

So if the winter is as mild as they say, then I guess I am in for a bit of a work out come spring to loosen the soil ready for planting.

The upside of this mild weather is we can get away with planting a few extra things in the garden right now.

Most instructions accompanying seeds are a guide to be trusted in most conditions and most plants have their reasons for wanting to be sown at certain times of the year due to light levels and how many days they need to

actually produce a harvest. The other key thing to consider is

temperature. Most seeds really don’t like it too cold and this is generally why there isn’t a lot to do in the garden in the winter.

By now most of the winter crops should be well and truly in the ground and away, ready to settle in for the winter ahead. However, this mild weather can be used to the advantage

of the gardener who is a little behind on their tasks.

The important thing to remember with gardening is we are dealing with nature and there are no hard and fast rules in nature.

If the soil is warm enough to plant seeds or seedlings that should have been in by last month at the latest, then there is no reason not to pop in a few now.
