Reading is one of important skills in learning language. It is also a means

of recreation and enjoyment. At the same time, it enlarges knowledge and

improves the technological achievement. Students can know information of the

text by reading comprehension. However, many students get difficulties in

reading material, for example recount text. Because of that, teacher should use

media of teaching that can develop the reading comprehension of the students.

Hot potatoes software applications is one of the teaching media that can be used

in teaching reading to develop the students’ reading skill. Therefore, the

researcher applies hot potatoes software applications media for the eighth grade

students of MTs Nurul Ulum Welahan Jepara in the academic year 2012/2013 to

develop their reading comprehension of recount text because they confused in

understanding it.

The objective of the research is to find out whether there is a significant

difference between the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of

MTs Nurul Ulum Welahan Jepara in the academic year 2012/2013 before and

after being taught by using hot potatoes software applications as a media. The

design of this research is experimental research. It is done at the eighth grade

students of MTs Nurul Ulum Welahan Jepara in the academic year 2012/2013.

The researcher took VIII B as the quasi experiment research as the sample by

using cluster random sampling. The quasi experiment research taught with hot

potatoes software applications media.

The researcher uses Recount text as the material, because based on the

KTSP curriculum, the reading material for the eighth grade students in MTs Nurul

Ulum Welahan Jepara in the academic year 2012/2013 in the even semester. The

mengembangkan keterampilan membaca siswa.

Peneliti mempersiapkan 25 pertanyaan pilihan ganda berdasarkan teks recount.

besar dari t-tabel (to>tt).
