Myriam Allard and Hedi Graja, the passionate couple of La Otra Orilla, create a brand new piece with their unique style of reinvented flamenco. Hybrid, iconoclastic and poetic. In Moi&lesAutres, the incandescent dancer and the emotive singer, accompanied by two musicians, portray the games we all play as we discover how to live with others while remaining true to ourselves. Of the traditional costumes and props they retain only the flamenco shoes, fan and fringes of a simple shawl. In a piece that includes the musicians’ bodies in the theatrically danced actions, they construct a series of tableaux on our relations with others and how through them we are revealed, exalted, confronted and sometimes marked for life. Remarkable performers in a succession of tableaux with a finely wrought aesthetic, creating atmospheres rich in mystery and emotion. Intense. All the traditional elements of Flamenco are present—gesture, rhythm and spirit—but interpreted in ways that are completely oblique and unexpected. With this magical, intelligent and radical show, La Otra Orilla takes its place alongside other artists (like Israël Galván) who are part of a growing movement championing contemporary reinterpretations of Flamenco. (La Presse, Montreal, about El 12) Allard’s onstage presence is that of an independent thinker thrillingly engaged with the music and the movement, creating her own unique expression. Allard seems to push herself to the limit, genuinely engaging with the moment, as if this performance, now, might take her over the edge – and if she had jumped, we’d have followed, judging from the explosion from the audience when it was over. MOI&LESAUTRES

THE NEW FACE OF FLAMENCO

In this brand new piece, the charismatic dancer-choreographer Myriam Allard and the singer and directorHedi Graja reaffirm their unique style of reinventedflamenco. Hybrid, iconoclastic and poetic.

Performing solo, but in an ongoing dialogue with three musicians, the dancer presents a spirited variation on the multiple ways of communicating with the other. Between solitude and fusion, mystery and the familiar, the other offers a reflection or leaves an impression that is felt deep in the flesh. And here the other is not only the human spirit, but also music and song.

Flamenco subtly influences the almost cinematographicmusical composition of the guitarist Caroline Planté, whohas been performing on the flamenco scene for 20 years.Like her accomplices Hedi Graja (vocals and palmas) andMiguel Medina (percussion and palmas), she is a strongpresence onstage, physically committed to thechoreography.

Updating its age-old codes and stripped of its costumes andtraditional figures, this flamenco vibrates with sincerity anddepth, with the intensity of the dancer’s presence and thepowerful emotions it evokes. A much anticipated event.

LA OTRA ORILLA, THE OTHER SHORE OF FLAMENCOAfter studying in Seville and Madrid, Quebecer Myriam Allard pursued dance studies with masters who, like Israel Galván, combined purity ofform with modernity. In Andalusia she met the multidisciplinary artist Hedi Graja, who had studied theatre and classical singing in France. Shetravelled the world performing with various troupes while he completed his studies and began a career as an actor. In 2005 they met up onceagain in Montreal, where they embarked on very personal research to create a form of flamenco close to their hearts, and together founded LaOtra Orilla. Moi&lesAutres is the third show of theirs to be presented by Danse Danse and the Cinquième Salle, after El12 and HomoBLABLAtus.
