Expectation is a funny thing in football. If you support a team that's the hot

favourite to take the title, you're gutted when they drop a point. But if your team is hanging on for survival, picking up a single point can be cause for celebration.

To quote John Cleese's character Brian Stimpson in the movie Clockwise: "I can take the despair. It's the hope I can't stand."

I think the expectations around WaiBOP United have signifi cantly shifted in little more than a year.

When the franchise launched in late 2013, I think it's fair to say not a lot was expected of a side that was replacing a Waikato FC that had achieved little in terms of results or support within the region.

The fi rst ASB Premiership season for WaiBOP established a credibility for the team and started to grow shoots of hope for this summer.

That has built into strong crowd support and a belief among the playing squad that making the playoff s is not some crazy dream.

The league table shows it's still possible to make the playoff s, despite losing our last couple of games to current and past champions Auckland City and Waitakere United.

After the Auckland City loss, the disappointment was plain to see on the faces of our players and coaching team as they left the pitch.

That's what happens when you go into games believing you are going to win it hurts when you lose.

In his comments in today's issue of The Range, coach Peter Smith says the game against Wellington Phoenix has become a

"must win" for his squad. He makes it plain that the current WaiBOP team have what it takes to extend their season.

This season has been exciting for the supporters, and the thrills of winning (especially the way the side has fought back when falling behind) are now tempered with the sting of disappointment when we stumble.

But thanks to the players and coaches for giving us hope ...

  • From the Dug OutA coachs perspective Peter Smith

Peter Smith is in his second season as

    Head Coach of WaiBOP United.

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to John Kerkhof Park for our penultimate home game of the 2014/15 ASB Premiership.

Obviously were hoping we can extend our season for a few more weeks by making the playoff s. If were to do that, however, we have to win today.

Fail to do so and were probably out of second chances. That goes for the Phoenix as well, so I think were in for a cracker.

These are the type of games good players want to play in and good coaches want to prepare their teams for. Ill be asking the lads to remember all the work theyve put in over the course of the season, the

sacrifi ces theyve made, the crowd support theyve had and to leave everything out on the fi eld today.

The defeat at Waitakere United last Saturday was a diffi cult one to stomach.

As much as the performance was good its all about getting results at this point of the season.

Thats what we need to be about this afternoon.

Matamata Swifts' Club Development Manager, Dwayne Barlow, said that while this is a new venture for the club it should help fi ll an obvious gap in the pre-season programme for this important age group.

Hopefully over time we can grow this tournament into something that sits alongside the other key age-group events, said Barlow.

For 2015, however, we aim to put on a well-run tournament that provides players with a solid day of football and coaches the opportunity to fi ne tune things ahead of the winter season. Weve got a few surprises up our sleeves too!

Family kite day There's always something new or diff erent at a WaiBOP United home game!

Football Dad unfolded a tatty and sunbleached map of the world across the kitchen table.

The fi ne print, in the bottom right of the map, marked its origin: Acme Corporation Printing and production, 1987.

Okay, so theres a few new countries in the world since this map was produced, explained Football Dad.

There have been a few wars and revolutions and things, so theres no longer a USSR.

Qatar! yelled the Youngest One enthusiastically, thrusting a stubby fi nger toward the Middle East. There, there there, on the map! Lots of oil!

The Eldest One scorned her sister: Geez, you are such a knowitall.

I pay attention in school, shot back the Youngest One. Cant help it if I am brainier than you.

Stop it, interjected Football Mum, a calmness in her voice. Who can show us Portugal on the map?

I believe thats in Europe next to France? off ered the Eldest One.

Close, neighbours Spain, answered Football Dad, a sweeping motion of his hand across an Iberia dotted with fl y pooh and the carcass of a dead spider.

Its quite exciting! squealed the Youngest One. An actual world cup in Hamilton!

Football Dad was quick to point out the facts of the matter: One of several FIFA world cups, he explained. They have tournaments for several diff erent age groups, and both gendersthis isnt the really big one, with the men, like Brazil last year. But its pretty close. The FIFA U20 World Cupthats a big deal.

So theyre boys? queried the Eldest One. Like teenagers? Pimples and not quite shaving every day type guys?

Gifted, wealthy and highly soughtafter teenage footballers, said Football Dad. They have to be 20 years old or under. Theyre superstars and millionaires in the making. Some of them will be signed to big European clubs already.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Barcelona, AC Milan, Werder Bremen

The Youngest One blurted out the fi rst European team that came to mind: Scunthorpe FC!

Football Mum smiled, putting a loving arm around her youngest child: Thats probably a little unlikely. I dont think Scunthorpe FC are big spenders during the transfer window. Football League One in England isnt exactly awash with money. But you never know.

Football Dad was keen to move the football geography class along.

Two South American teams, he announced, aff ecting a horrible abomination of a Latin accent. Zey will be from Colombia and Uruguay. Ole!

The Youngest One pounced at the opportunity to show her academic chops again.

There and there, she said excitedly, again with the fi nger.

We continue our series of WaiBOP United lookalikes with WaiBOP United goalkeeper James McPeake (on the left). We reckon he he bears more than a passing resemblance to British actor Jason Statham.

    DOUBLE TAKE

Colombia wear yellow! In Colombia they once shot a man for an own goal in the world cup I read that on Wikipedia.

Football Mum spoke sternly and slowly: A very sad day in football lets spare a thought for that players family. There was a lot more to that than a simple game or an own goal.

The Eldest One looked uptight but

enthusiastic in equal measure. Were going to a game though, right?

Here in Hamilton?Football Dad could not suppress a foolish

grin.Id say so, he said. Reaching into his

pocket.Out came a cluster of colourful tickets. Were going to the whole bloody lot!

Todays VisitorsYellow fever comes to Cambridge

The Wellington Phoenix's move to play in the ASB Premiership has given the domestic game a double boost.

While it has created a pathway for talented youngsters to break into professional football, it has also raised the profi le of the ASB Premiership with the Phoenix helping draw crowds to their games.

More than 1,000 turned up to watch Phoenix play the Wanderers SC in Whangarei early this month, evidence that football fans will turn up to see national league games if there's a chance of seeing the next generation of star players.

The team's results have been inconsistent but the side has been encouraged to play open, attacking football which augers well for their fi rst visit to Cambridge.

THE COACH Andy HedgeA former apprentice with English club

Brentford, Hedge emigrated to New Zealand where he has quickly risen through the coaching ranks. After a spell playing for Miramar Rangers, he became the Talent Manager for Capital Football in 2010 and

WaiBOP United beat Phoenix 20 at Eden Park in December. Photo: Grant Stantiall.

then became the assistant coach of the junior All Whites a year later. Hedge was appointed New Zealand Footballs Talent Development Manager in 2012 and has since joined the Phoenix to develop their up and coming stars who play in the ASB Premiership.

In New Zealand, there is defi nitely a pathway to success. I believe if a player puts in the work and takes their opportunities, they have every chance of playing good football, be it at National league level, an American University, the ALeague or even the Premiership," he says.

ALL WHITE TO WATCH Tyler BoydTaurangaborn Tyler Boyd has been the

standout player for the Phoenix team in the ASB Premiership this summer, scoring 10 goals in his fi rst six appearances, including four in a 10minute burst against Southern United.

The winger/striker played for Hamilton's Melville United in the Northern League in 2011 and followed that with a season of ASB Premiership football with Waikato FC. That led to a three year contract with the Phoenix and he made his ALeague debut as a 17yearold.

Boyd was named the Phoenix clubs U23 Player of the Year in 2014 and made his international debut for New Zealand when he played in a friendly against Japan last March.

Our Chosen CharityWaiBOP United backs Macular Degeneration New Zealand

WaiBOP United is pleased to announce that Macular Degeneration New Zealand (MDNZ) is the charity the franchise will support during the 2014/15 ASB Premiership season.

Macular Degeneration causes progressive loss of central vision but the peripheral vision is not aff ected. It is the leading cause of severe vision loss. One in seven people over the age of 50 years is aff ected in some way and the incidence increases with age.

The macula is the central part of the retina, the l i g h t s e n s i t i v e tissue at the back of the eye. The retina processes all visual images. It is responsible for your ability to read, recognise faces, drive and see colours clearly.

WaiBOP United will promote awareness of Macular Degeneration within the football community. We hope that off the back of whatever profi le our club is able to build we can help raise awareness of what Macular Degeneration is and how people can get tested, says Dwayne Barlow, WaiBOP Uniteds Communications Manager.

This is something that has the potential to cause functional blindness and yet is easily treated if detected early enough.

Macular Degeneration is thought to be caused by genetic and environmental

factors. People over the age of 50 years are at risk. If you smoke or have a family history of Macular Degeneration, your risk

of developing the disease is much greater.

    Amsler GridThe Amsler grid

is a useful tool to detect vision problems resulting from damage to the macula (the central part of the retina).

How to do it:1. Cover one eye,

then focus on the dot in the centre.

    2. Do any of the lines look wavy, blurred or distorted?

    3. Are there any missing areas or dark areas in the grid?

    4. Don't forget to test both eyes.5. If you see wavy, broken or distorted

lines, or blurred or missing areas of vision, you may be displaying the symptoms of Macular Degeneration.

Contact your doctor or optometrist immediately.

For more information we encourage everyone to visit www.mdnz.org.nz.

With only three months to go before the opening ceremony, plans for the FIFA U20 World Cup are reaching new levels of anticipation.

Twenty of the 24 participating nations have already been confi rmed for the May/June event and the draw has determined where teams will play their group games

Waikato and Bay of Plenty fans will be able to go to Hamilton to see games involving Qatar, Portugal, Colombia and an African nation still to be determined.

Indications are that the tournament is going to be a wonderful spectacle for local fans and the expected global television audience of more than 170 million.

Already, organisers have confi rmed that more than 50,000 match tickets were sold

even before the draw was made, with spectators willing to book their seats in advance.

A special advance sales promotion for VISA card holders has just ended and on March 10, tickets for individual matches go on general sale.

Local Organising Committee CEO Dave Beeche says ticket sales are shaping up well.

The fact that hospitality for the fi nal has been snapped up this far out is an indication that people understand that,

whoever makes the fi nal, there will be some outstanding talent on show, a future superstar of the game will likely grace the match and that football at this level will be guaranteed entertainment, said Mr Beeche.

The tournament will be hosted by seven New Zealand cities with the opening game to be played at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland on 30 May and the fi nal back at North Harbour on 20 June. Hamilton's fi rst games will kick off on May 31.

THE WINNER'S CURSEWhile the U20 tournament is famous for

producing new stars of the game, victory has been less rewarding for the nations which have won the tournament.

France are the current champions, after beating Uruguay 41 in a penalty shootout at the last fi nals. But France failed to qualify

for the New Zealand event, becoming the fourth consecutive title holder to fail to qualify for the subsequent tournament.

FOURTH TEAM FOR HAMILTONThe identity of the fourth qualifying

nation to play group games at Hamilton will be known by March 22.

Eight teams will contest the African U20 Championships in Senegal with four qualifying for the trip to New Zealand.

The fourthranked African team will come to Hamilton. The eight contenders are Congo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Zambia.

Rhythm off the pitch is being used to help WaiBOP United footballers hit the right notes on the fi eld.

For last weeks game against Auckland City, the Cambridge Brass Band entertained the crowd at John Kerkhof Park with four march tunes at halftime.

And to keep the crowd chanting their support for WaiBOP United, a group of fans brought a bass drum into the Carters Stand behind the northern goal, belting out a constant beat throughout the game.

Its tremendous that the fans have started to look for ways to bring their own forms of music to help boost the atmosphere at the games, said Josh Easby, secretary of the Cambridge Football Club which is hosting fi ve of the ASB Premiership matches this summer.

The visiting Auckland City fans are noted for their vocal support but there was no doubt the home fans outsang them.

The Cambridge club has booked a Brazilian percussion group, Sambatron, to liven up proceedings at the Phoenix game today.

United We StandWhat's happening inside WaiBOP United

Ever wondered what the best seat in the house looked like at John Kerkhof Park?

Here's the view of the pitch as seen by WaiBOP United's technical analyst, Simon Mead, as he prepared to make a video of the game against Auckland City last week.

Mead who says that having no fear of heights is a prerequisite for his role was more than 20 metres aloft in a hired cherry picker behind the coaches' dugouts.

He goes to great lengths to provide statistical and video analysis of United's games so head coach Peter Smith can look for ways to improve the team and individual performances.

In previous games, Mead video recorded the action from a homemade platform strapped to the bonnet of his vehicle, giving him an elevated view of the play, but not as clear as from the cherry picker.

Technical analysis has quickly become the norm in the ASB Premiership with many of the teams now having someone to keep track of the number and type of passes made by players, how possession is won and lost and other key insights.

But at present, competition rules are designed to keep the number crunching at arm's length.

During the recent WaiBOP United match at Auckland City's Kiwitea St, both Mead and his City counterpart were ordered to leave the technical area and told that devices such as iPads were barred from use by coaching staff in the dugout.

WaiBOP United made much of the play but lost to a goal in the sixth minute of added time to playoff rivals Waitakere United last weekend.

The west Aucklanders beat United 21 at Fred Taylor Park with the late goal from substitute Derice Richards.

WaiBOP had the better of early play and took the lead when Robbie Greenhalgh set up Chad Coombes to score against his former club. in the 14th minute.

Tom Biss equalised on 23 minutes but then a series of fi ne saves from Waitakere's Danny Robinson kept the home team in contention until the late winner.

Waitakere coach Brian Shelley acknowledged the performance by WaiBOP, saying: "In fairness to WaiBOP, they came here and really had a go. We started the game a bit slowly but I felt we worked our way into it after that. It could have fi nished 9-8 but Robbo has pulled off some wonderful saves for us.

WaiBOP coach Peter Smith felt his team deserved something from the match.

"It was a tough one to take because I felt we dominated the game. The goal came at a time when we were battering them and

football is a cruel game one lapse of concentration can cost you."

In other games, Auckland City maintained their eightmatch unbeaten run and league leadership with a 31 win against Canterbury United.

Team Wellington scraped home 21 against bottomplaced Southern United to remain in second spot on the table.

Meanwhile, WaiBOP's visitors this weekend, Wellington Phoenix, blew two leads against Hawke's Bay United to eventually lose 42 at Memorial Park in Wellington.

Phoenix scored after fi ve minutes when Ruairi CahillFleury netted a cross from Alex Rufer. Bay's Sean Lovemore levelled to make it 11 soon after the break.

That sparked a threegoal fl urry in as many minutes as Nathaniel Hailermariam put Phoenix ahead while Ryan Tinsley and Viktor Lekaj scored for the visitors.

Lovemore's second goal settled the result with about 10 minutes to go.
