But a Pesach Seder asks a little more from us – and not just in terms of agreeing as to whose recipe for matzah balls will prevail. And yet year after year, we respond to the invitation Pesach provides. Every personal narrative has a story: the events, ideas, relationships and moments in our lives that we weave together to know “who we are.” So too does each collective narrative. In the Jewish tradition, Pesach is our “master story,” the story that frames the rest of the “Jewish story.” Without the Exodus story, there is no discovery of a God who stands for freedom (perhaps understood as spaciousness) rather than enslavement (perhaps understood as confinement). Without the Exodus story, there is no journey to the Promised Land. Without the Exodus story, there is no revelation at Mt. Sinai, and no Torah tradition. And okay, without the Exodus story, we would not have to endure matzah for seven days, but on balance it is not a bad trade-off: no bread for a week, but a perpetual path pointing to freedom. The relevance of Judaism is measured by the way it can help us to navigate through our personal life journeys. As we gather for Seder in a few weeks, we have an opportunity to narrate what happened “back then.” But we also have a chance to ask: Where do I feel confined, constricted and narrow? How do I create expansiveness, opportunity and change? What will I do with the freedom I have? And how will I work to increase freedom for others? THE RABBIS TEACHCan you guess what the three most-observed Jewish rituals are? The first is lighting Chanukah candles. The second is fasting on Yom Kippur. And the third is…the Pesach Seder.

So think about this: lighting Chanukah candles takes relatively little effort; fasting is a bit more demanding, but it is over in twenty-five hours. But a Pesach Seder asks a little more from us – and not just in terms of agreeing as to whose recipe for matzah balls will

prevail. And yet year after year, we respond to the invitation Pesach provides.

Every personal narrative has a story: the events, ideas, relationships and moments in our lives that we weave together to know “who we are.” So too does each collective narrative. In the Jewish tradition, Pesach is our “master story,” the story that frames the rest of the “Jewish story.”

Without the Exodus story, there is no discovery of a God who stands for freedom (perhaps understood as spaciousness) rather than enslavement (perhaps understood as confinement).

In the discussions that follow from such questions, new memories are waiting to be created.

Best wishes for a liberating Pesach!

FROM YOUR LEADERSHIPSteve Angstreich, President

I want to thank all of you who made this year’s High Holy Day Appeal a landmark in both the total dollar amount pledged and the number of congregants participating. I hope that this year’s success sets a precedent for the years to come, and, someday, we will be fortunate enough to say that we achieved 100% participation.

I am pleased to report that our land sale is complete. The proceeds were used to reduce our mortgage principal by one million dollars, and, going forward, we were able to substantially reduce our interest payments to Columbia Bank, which has been gracious in its dealings with us.

In October, we held our first art auction in over fourteen years. It was a success thanks to our sponsors and patrons, our members who worked so hard before and during the evening, and to all of you who attended and purchased some amazing artwork.

As many of you have read from my recent letter, we are creating an early morning (9:00 am) Family Service on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur, in addition to our traditional 11:00 am service, and have begun a campaign to raise funds needed to purchase a new High Holy Day machzor (prayer book) that will be used for all these services. Although in its infancy, we are experiencing a strong response to our book plate fundraising appeal.

Coming June 2 is M’kor Or – the night we will present Gail Donner with the Marylee and Stuart Alperin Leadership Award for all she has done and continues to do for M’kor Shalom. We will also thank Merle Steinberg, our retiring Education Director, for her many years of dedicated service. Please become a sponsor, place an ad, attend the event or do all three. It promises to be another wonderful M’kor Moment.

Let’s continue to make 5779 a truly memorable year for Congregation M’kor Shalom.

B’shalom,

Steve

Steve Angstreich, President

CANTOR’S NOTESCHAG PURIM SAMEACHBy Cantor Rhoda Harrison

As I work with our Purim Shpielers and Shpiel co-directors, I’m learning that Purim is a popular and beloved holiday here at M’kor Shalom! How fitting, as despite its “minor holiday” status it was valued enough by our early Jewish sages that an entire tractate of the Mishnah, called – appropriately enough – Megillah, was based on the discussion of Purim’s celebrations and observances.

At M’kor Shalom, the celebration and observance of Purim revolves around our Purim Dis-Service and Shpiel. This year, Purim falls on Wednesday evening, March 20. Our Dis-Service begins at 7:00 pm and will be followed by the production of Esther: A Persian Musical (loosely based on the popular Broadway hit, Hamilton).

The cast of Ham… er, I mean, Esther and my co-directors join me in inviting you to what will be a wonderfully energetic and fun re-telling of the Purim story.

M’KOR OR (continued from page 1)

These two women deserve the special night we have planned. There will be incredible food and cocktails, plus marvelous entertainment! Magical music will fill the air as Michael J. Corman wows us with his incredible voice and keyboard playing. Adam Elbaum and Randy Shine will captivate the crowd with their amazing magic. These two talented performers will leave you awestruck!

M’kor Or will be a night to see, hear, taste and feel “The Magic of M’kor Shalom!” Your invitation will be coming in the mail some time in April, but mark your calendar now, because you won’t want to miss this exciting evening as we make some magic together. Take the opportunity to celebrate these wonderful leaders and thank them in person, sponsor the evening or place an ad in the tribute book:

TWO EXCITING SPEAKERS FROM ISRAEL COMING TO M’KOR SHALOMRABBI DR. SHARON SHALOM: CIVIL RIGHTS IN ISRAELSunday, March 31, 11:00 am – 1:00 pmRabbi Dr. Sharon Shalom, who immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia on his own at age 9, is a distinguished rabbi, an accomplished scholar and a lecturer in both academic institutions and popular settings. He has taught at Bar-Ilan and Tel Aviv Universities, and his courses have included “Culture, Halakha and Tradition in the Ethiopian Community.” He is on the faculty at Ono Academic College and Bar Ilan, and he serves as rabbi of the Kedoshei Yisrael community in Kiryat Gat. He is currently involved in writing a curriculum on Ethiopian Jewry and its culture for Jewish educational institutions in the United States.

FORMER IDF SPOKESMAN CAPTAIN (RESERVES) BARAK RAZ: MORALITY IN THE IDFThursday, May 16, 10:00 am – 12:00 noonCaptain Barak Raz is a reserve officer and spokesman in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). As his final active post, he was the spokesman in the Judea and Samaria Division, the IDF’s largest and most challenging division, responsible for operations in the West Bank. As part of the senior staff, he devised and implemented a proactive strategic communications policy, while also leading the division’s traditional media, social media and public diplomacy efforts. Captain Raz shares his experiences in order to create dynamic and thought-provoking discussions about the various dilemmas facing Israeli leadership in a constantly evolving arena. Originally from Queens, New York, he currently lives in Tel Aviv and serves as an Executive Officer in the Foreign Press Branch at IDF Headquarters. He has an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from Tel Aviv University and a BA in Political Science, Judaic Studies and International Studies from Binghamton University.

There is no cost for these events, which are open to the community.

These special programs come to us in conjunction with the Katz JCC through Amiel BaKehila, part of the Ohr Torah Stone network. This exciting new initiative, under the auspices of Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, is aimed at empowering Jewish communities around the world through Jewish education, Israel engagement and Jewish arts and culture, in an apolitical and areligious format. Working with small and mid-sized communities around the world, Amiel BaKehila brings dynamic programming, speakers and educators to our community to unite, excite and connect Jews to their local community and to the State of Israel. This year, our Southern New Jersey community, along with New Orleans and Charleston, is part of a pilot program that will help shape the direction of these international outreach events.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWSNext fall, there will be a change* in our weekend class schedules, but not in our curriculum!

The Religious School is moving our outstanding programming for 5th and 6th graders from Saturday to Sunday. This means that Junior Congregation is moving to Sunday. This also means that we can now include 4th graders in Junior Congregation, giving them an additional

year of worship learning and practice. In addition to Junior Congregation, the Hebrew curriculum will continue to use the same cutting-edge interactive series of Hebrew in Harmony. There will be an occasional Saturday Shabbaton program for 4th, 5th and 6th graders, as a supplement to the Junior Congregation curriculum. When these Shabbatons take place, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students will not be required to attend school on the Sunday of that week. These dates will be provided at the start of the new school year. The other change is that all Sunday classes will begin at 9:00 am, in order to accommodate this very full curriculum and to allow for some additional creative programming. This change was the result of several months of collaboration between our Education and Youth Committee, parents, teachers, staff, the Board of Trustees and Clergy. They have all worked diligently to review the schedule of classes for Religious School, to assess how we can best balance our educational goals with the many time demands on our students and families. Collectively, we believe these changes will ensure a continuation of the high quality educational and spiritual experience you and your children have come to expect of our Religious School. If parents have any questions, please feel free to contact me. *The schedule for Judaica classes on Tuesday or Wednesday (4:10-6:00 pm), as well as Tuesday night Hebrew High (7:30-9:00 pm) remains as is; no change.

MLK WEEKEND OF SERVICECommunity service is a major part of life at M’kor Shalom, which means we were quite busy during January’s Martin Luther King Weekend of Service. Following is a summary of our accomplishments:

• We kicked off this special weekend by collecting much-needed food for the JFCS food pantry. • Nearly 150 adults and children came to the synagogue to make over 700 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, flower centerpieces, utensil packets and placemats for Cathedral Kitchen in Camden. • Alongside the peanut butter-and-jelly brigade was a group of congregants who painted colorful birdhouses to adorn the Urban Garden at the Neighborhood Center in Camden. • Some congregants served dinner at the Cathedral Kitchen in Camden; others cooked dinner for Gift of Life Family House in Philadelphia. • M’kor Shalom was one of five organizations working in the Food Bank of South Jersey. Our congregants helped sort 4,000 pounds of food, prep meals for the Health and Wellness program and helped make 795 Harvest Boxes. • Our ECC and Religious School families collected candy for chemo care bags for patients undergoing treatment at Cooper Hospital.

Thank you to everyone who helped to fulfill our mission of tikkun olam!

CONGREGANTS IN THE NEWS A CRISIS IN HOLLYWOOD

M’kor Shalom’s own Samantha Jayne Perez (Siegel), daughter of Larry Siegel and Sharon Siegel, is finding success in the entertainment industry through her unique take on the millennial generation’s “quarter life crises.” She started with an Instagram account (@QuarterLifePoetry), in which she shared the everyday experiences of 20-somethings through humorous, bright posts composed of an illustration and four-line poem – it’s currently exceeding 130K followers. That success led to the publication of her book of the same name, a quick seller on Amazon and bookstores. To promote the book, Samantha and her husband, award-winning director Arturo Perez, Jr., created engaging vignettes starring Samantha to post on social media. One video, “Mom Talk,” went viral, with 10 million views on Facebook within a week. Among the viewers were sharp-eyed Hollywood producers looking to expand content to the millennial audience. Ultimately, FX Network signed the team of Samantha and Arturo to create and produce a series of shorts. They completed nine shorts in all, which included the editing wizardry of M’kor Shalom’s (and USC Film School alum) Zach Siegel – Samantha’s brother. The shorts were so well received they were submitted and selected for screening at the recently concluded 2019 Sundance Film Festival. With the series due to air later this year on FX Network, Samantha is now at work to bring the shorts into other formats. Samantha was driven by a desire to let her fellow millennials know, through humor, that they are not alone in feeling angst – through viewing the carefully curated lives of others online. It’s a heartfelt tikkun olam sensibility, and one that we’ll be able to see unfold on TV. See her posts and videos at quarterlifepoetry.com.
