stretch of the A12 motorway near Utrecht – was opened to traffic three months ahead of schedule with extra lanes in both directions. This is to be followed by work on connecting roads, local roads, ecological provisions and green areas. The project as a whole will be concluded in March 2013, which is another two years earlier than originally planned.www.rijkswaterstaat.nl/a12utrechtveenendaal

Drilling for dyke data

For client Rijkswaterstaat (Public Works department) BAM Nelis de Ruiter is conducting pulse borings in and around the picturesque village of Marken, situated in the Markermeer to the east of Amsterdam. Head of Geomonitoring Michel Bosboom: ‘Rijkswaterstaat needs additional information about the dyke to calculate its stability. We are placing level indicators in the borings that will show variations in the height of the groundwater. Once every fourteen days we report the measurements to Rijkswaterstaat. The dyke runs through the village, which is why we are working so close to the traditional houses there. The position of the rooms, cellars and foundations of the houses located on the dyke will also be recorded.’

Organic hospital

The construction of the vast new Isala clinics building in Zwolle, in the northern Netherlands, is not yet completed, but the organic design of the hospital by the Alberts & Van Huut firm of architects is already clearly visible. The slanting lines and the palette of colours predominate, both in the interior and on the outside walls, as well as in the atriums. The work is done by the Designed to Build (D2B) joint venture, in which BAM Utiliteitsbouw is responsible for the construction of the building and BAM Techniek (with partners) is in charge of the m&e works. Other (group) companies involved are BAM Infratechniek, BAM Nelis De Ruiter and Interflow. The hospital will be completed in 2013.www.isalabouwt.nl

Green alternative to concrete surface

In co-operation with other partners, BAM Wegen has developed a sustainable alternative to the traditional concrete surface. The product, known as ViaVerde, was used for the first time for the construction of a car park near Utrecht.‘If you want to make your infrastructure sustainable, then you also have to look at your materials purchasing policy. With ViaVerde, traditional Portland cement has largely been replaced as a binding agent by a combination of lignite fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag. Secondary aggregates are used as well. The result is a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions and a limited use of primary raw materials’, explains BAM Infraconsult innovation manager, Ad van ’t Zelfde.

Wallasea Island jetty completed

Slender viaduct on black pillars

High notes!

Construction of the 180 metre Crossrail jetty at Wallasea Island in Essex is now complete. This is an important milestone in the use of rail and ship to sustainably transport excavated material from London to create a new 1,500 acre RSPB nature reserve. The reserve is one of the largest new wetland nature habitats in Europe. The jetty will be ready to receive the first shipments of 4.5 million tonnes of clean, uncontaminated and

The team of contractors from BAM Construction working on the new £16 million Bramall Music Building at the University of Birmingham were treated to an impromptu hard hat concert by a brass quintet. As well as creating some light entertainment for the team, the concert has also given performers a valuable insight to the acoustics of the hall. The Bramall Music Building will provide a 450-seat auditorium for music, opera, drama and prestigious lectures as well as state-of-the-art rehearsal and practice rooms and recording facilities. The building will also be an outstanding venue for conferences and events upon completion in September.

In joint venture with CFE and Aelterman, Galère is building a new railway viaduct in Luxembourg City. The six pillars, coloured black through the addition of graphite to the concrete, are now neatly in position, directly alongside an 1859 railway viaduct over the Alzette River. Later this year, the joint venture will start sliding the steel lattice construction into place which will bear the superstructure

Building a diamond in the City of Diamonds

BAM’s Belgian building company Interbuild has started construction of the new Port House in Antwerp. The new headquarters of Antwerp Port Authority have been designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. The 12,800 m2 development consists of a glazed extension above the former fire station, supported asymmetrically on three concrete pillars. Clad in glass and aluminum, the 46 metre-high extension overlooks the city and port. The construction value amounts to approximately €50 million. The construction period is 33 months.

BAM Construction has begun a state-of-the-art advanced blade casting facility for Rolls-Royce in Rotherham. It will manufacture high technology single crystal turbine blades for large civil aero engines. The 14,000 m2 facility will be one of the most advanced blade casting facilities in the world, featuring groundbreaking manufacturing techniques such as 3D structured light for geometry inspection. The Advanced Blade Casting Facility is expected to produce its first blades in late 2014, and to be capable of manufacturing 100,000 blades per year when fully operational. The single crystal turbine blade is a critical component of jet engines and there are over 65 in every Trent engine.

Campbeltown Pier extension

BAM Nuttall is halfway through work on a £4.5 million contract to extend one of the quays at Campbeltown’s harbour on behalf of the local authority Argyll and Bute Council. The site team is installing a new 1,220 millimetre diameter steel tube and sheet combi wall at depths of 39 metre offset from the existing wall so that it can accommodate larger ships ready to carry giant newly fabricated wind turbine masts produced just outside the town. The new wall will help future proof the harbour, providing more than enough resistance to failure for

the high loads imposed on it by the heavy steel turbine masts. Site agent Ian McWhinnie: ‘Wind turbine masts are getting longer and heavier and so that extra penetration is needed to help overcome any possibility of overturning due to increased loading from freight.’

reusable material excavated during Crossrail’s tunnelling operations in London. The jetty, constructed by BAM Nuttall, comprises two 800 tonne steel pontoons, each 15 metres wide, and is able to accommodate two 90 metre, 2,500 tonne ships simultaneously. The contract to transport excavated material was awarded to a BAM Nuttall/Van Oord UK joint venture.

of the 293-metre long viaduct.‘The project actually consists of three parts. The viaduct itself, to which is connected a tunnel one hundred metres long, and a 240-metre long concrete caisson’, explains Galère project manager, Thibaut Vandermeulen. The project means that the CFL railway company will be able to double its track capacity on the northern side of Luxembourg City railway station.

BAM Civil and Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau have been awarded the contract by Shell E&P Ireland for the construction of a 4.9 kilometer tunnel as part of the Corrib gas project, one of the largest energy infrastructure developments in Ireland in 2012. The tunnel, which lies eighty kilometres of the north-west coast of Ireland, is a key element of the onshore pipeline works, which is the final phase of the Corrib project. Work on the contract has already commenced. As soon as the tunnel has been constructed and the TBM with an internal diameter of 3.5 metres has been removed, the 20-inch gas pipeline will be installed in the tunnel. The project is expected to be completed in late 2014.

BAM erected a completely new steel construction inside the building and built a wing behind the original building, with a parking garage at ground level. BAM Building, the building operating company of BAM Contractors was also responsible for finishes. The creation of a roof garden was also part of the project.

Tubular piles sunk deep!

It is hard to say for certain, but a one hundred-metre long steel tubular pile that the BAM International, McConnell Dowell and See Young joint venture recently sunk for the construction of a jetty off the Malaysian coast could be the world’s longest. The joint venture has now put in place a quarter of the 832 piles, most of which are eighty to one hundred metres long. Such lengths are necessary because of the condition of the soil, and
