• The following two slides are designed to generate discussion about the primary responsibilities on employers.

• Consider asking the following questions to stimulate the conversation:• How confident are we that we have all of these items under control?• Are you aware there are financial penalties of thousands of dollars attached to

breaches of these requirements?• Is there anything on this list we can improve?

• If any of these issues require further exploration you can:• look at the employer tab at www.workcover.wa.gov.au;• discuss issues with your insurer; or• call WorkCover WA’s Advice and Assistance line on 1300 794 744

The last dot point on the following slide refers to the requirement to keep open the actual position of an injured worker for 12 months, or if this isn’t possible, to maintain the worker in a similar role and level. There is further information about this requirement here: http://www.workcover.wa.gov.au/employers/faqs/

• This slide is designed to generate discussion about the:• high number of claims in the WA workers’ compensation system• high cost of claims to employers• need for everyone at the workplace to focus on prevention of serious injuries.

• These statistics indicate that every 30 minutes someone is injured so badly in a WA workplace that they need at least a day off work.

• Unfortunately there is also a work related death in WA almost once a fortnight. There were 38 work related deaths in 2014/15. Therefore, every ten days there was one workplace fatality.

• Consider asking the following questions to stimulate the conversation:• What are the most common injuries in our workplace (look at the Workers’

Compensation Scheme Trends May 2015 report to see the most common injuries in your industry sector)?

• What has been the impact of the claims we have had in the past 2 years?• What costs, other than the cost of claims, have we experienced as a result of these

claims?

• Further statistical information is available in the Resources tab on the WorkCover WA website at www.workcover.wa.gov.au/resources/research‐evaluation‐statistics/statistical‐reports/

• This slide is intended to promote discussion about return to work attitudes at your workplace.

• Consider asking the following questions:• Does our workplace have a culture of early return to work following injuries? If not,

why not?• Do we encourage our workers to return to work and do we facilitate this effectively?• Is there anything we could improve in returning injured workers to work at our

workplace?

• Research indicates that the sooner a person returns to work after injury, the more likely they are to successfully return to work in the longer term.

• Return to work success relies on the:• worker and employer being able to communicate about the worker’s capacity• workplace duties• implementation of achievable return to work programs.

• The worker’s doctor should also play a proactive role in the return to work process.

• For more information go to the Employers Guide to Injury Management at www.workcover.wa.gov.au/resources/forms‐publications/employer‐publications/
