    name he had /een gien in !um/ai /& his )arents$ am/itious)ro(essionals who /rought him to the United States /e(ore he startedmiddle school. 0e was e1tremel& /right7 he attended an Americanmedical school and com)leted the )restigious )s&chiatr& residenc& at%a&ne ,hitne& *which had moed (rom its )er)etuall& 8ooded!anhattan site to ,hite %lains late in the )reious centur&+. 0e wasiewed as one o( the &oung stars o( the residenc& )rogram */e(ore hewas seduced /& anti9uated Freudian theories$ much to the chagrin o(his more mentors+.

    It seems that eer& generation or so$ a new )s&chiatric condition is

    de:ned$ s)reads through a gien culture$ and generates seeraldi-erent treatments.
