Dolphins and whales

Whales and dolphins have always been there, in the Strait of Gibral-tar. Above all, sperm whales can be seen between March and July, orcas in summer and dolphins the whole year because they are resi-dent species in this section of water, which is only 14 Kilometres and connects the south of Europe with the north of Africa. If you want to watch them, there are several companies in Tarifa offering different types of boats. You will enjoy the morning or after-noon in the middle of the sea, with views over the African continent.

Beaches

Small, large, beautiful, quiet, crowded, with or without waves… the pro-vince of Cádiz has 80 beaches to choose what to do, apart from having a walk and sunbathing. There are beaches you should go, even if it is not summer. It is a pleasure to play on the sand and breathe the feeling of freedom that invades us when watching the immensity of the sea. Children are prone to running away and grown-ups to sitting to watch the sight, but it brings a smile to all of us.There are cliffs, woods, marshlands, lighthouses, salt lakes between the beaches with views over the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

Beaches

Cross the Bay of Cádiz

Crossing the bay of Cádiz is one of the indispensable appointments. Catamaran trips are very frequent. A pleasant trip from the capital to El Puerto de Santa Maria or Rota. Another suggestive proposal is to go into the Bay by albarco.com and sail under the Carranza bridge before going back to the dock. Looking at Cádiz from the sea, go around its walls and the castle of Santa Catalina until reaching the beach of La Caleta is one of the essential routes. Sailing when the sun sets is one experience that you will never forget. Catamaran: www.cmtbc.es Boat trips: www.albarco.com

Water parks

Aqualand Bay of Cádiz, located in El Puerto de Santa Maria is the largest water park in the province, full of toboggans, rapids, backwa-ters and whirlpools to enjoy the water. In fact, there are several parks for children to play in facilities just made for them and young people to let their adrenaline out. Bahía Park Bahía de Algeciras boasts about having the largest Jacuzzi in Andalucía.In both parks, there are wave pools, restaurants and picnic areas to enjoy the sun in the funniest parks. Facilities such as kamikaze, crazy race or devil tail give us an idea that water and speed are inseparable companions of emotions.

Island of Sancti Petri

When summer comes, we should have a boat trip at dusk. Boats de-parture from the port of Sancti Petri of Chiclana and go into the sea to see how the sun sets in front of the mythical island of Hercules, who separated Europe from Africa.

It is not a common sunset. In the Costa de la Luz the sun be-comes an incandes-cent red ball and sinks slowly in the sea. This is a great opportunity if you like taking pic-tures.

www.albarco.com

You can also disem-bark in the island to go to concerts, shows for children, guided and dramatised tours to know this spot be-tter where mythology places the temple of Hercules.

The best is to contact the tourist offices of Chiclana and San Fer-nando or www.log-gia.es that has been responsible for the custody, access con-trol and tours in the island and the castle of Sancti Petri since 2011.

The city of Boys an Girls

The paradise of zip-lines, toboggans, airbeds, roller skates and tricy-cles. It is not a common park; it has been designed to spend the whole day. Dimensions are like three football fields. It is the largest park in the province and located in Jerez. Workshops and courses are also offe-red in the Leisure Centre and Family Support.

www.venalaciudad.com.

You will find recreational areas, outdoors children’s parks, ballparks and the pink-colour world for the girls who want to become a princess for one day with centres like Princelandia all over the province, both in towns and villages.

Tourist offices will inform you about their locations.

Bread and cheese taste like a kiss

Is there anything fresher than hot bread? In El Bos-que, there is a water mill where children can learn how to make bread, true bread. A mill where going inside is a pleasure, with its thick walls. An old-fas-hioned way mill to know how bread was made in the 18th century, from the wheat milling to the dough baking. It is called Moli-no de Abajo and you can take away the freshly-ma-de bread or it can be taken to your hotel.

It is even more delicious if you eat it with chacina (cold cuts) from the Sierra de Cádiz (mountain chain of Cádiz) because the production of blood sausages and spicy sausages (chorizo and salchichón) is part of the culinary heritage of the province, specially of the Sierra. Cheese has always been told as tasting like a kiss. In the province, chesses are accumulating more and more prizes, so knowing how they are made is a good option.

In the Finca (estate) Las Hazuelas in Grazalema www.pringon.com you can participate in a cheese workshop and try the yogurt. The Quesos Artesanos (traditionally crafted cheese) El Bosqueño www.quesoselbosque.com, in the Sierra de Cádiz (mountain chain of Cá-diz), has an interpretation centre and cheese tastings and workshops are organized. Everybody in the area knows about payoya goats, native of the Sierra de Cádiz (mountain chain of Cádiz), which are fed with their mothers’ milk and produce a so tasty cheese.

In Rota, www.elbucarito.es, there is a farm and a glazed area from where you can see how cheese is made and if you like, you can beco-me a cheese expert.

The sweetest Museum

The Museum of Honey and Bees of Rancho Cortesano is a sweet and exciting museum, in which you can see how bees work and spend some time being disguised as a beekeeper.

This Museum also shows the importance of bees in the pollination process and in the formation of fruits and seeds. In Rancho Corte-sano, there is an ecological garden where mangoes, custard apple tress, pear trees, apple trees, almond trees, orange trees and olive trees are grown. There is also a restaurant and a shop where you can buy jars of multi-flower honey, holm oak honey, eucalyptus honey, orange-flower honey, rosemary honey, delights of honey and melo-ja, pollen, royal jelly and soaps. www.ranchocortesano.net

Tavira Tower

The Tavira Tower is lo-cated at the top of the old town. From there, the panoramic view do-minates everything: the sea, the land and the sky as if it was a boat figure-head. Every effort has its compensation because 160 steps have to be climbed to reach the top. Nobody should leave Cádiz without climbing to the Tavira Tower. It is one of the towers in the city used to control the boats coming to the coast. There are still two hundred towers but this one is the most emblematic. Inside we can find the dark cham-ber, a curious gadget from where we can see what is happening in real time, what pedestrians are doing outside the Tower and we can see the rooftops of Cádiz. It is like being an authorized spy.

Chipiona Lighthouse

It is 72 metres high and it is the highest lighthouse in Spain and one of the ten highest lighthouses in the world. You need to climb 322 steps to reach its balcony. But it is not only large, but also beautiful and peculiar because of its spiral staircase. It is aero-maritime because its light beam reaches the same distance both in horizontal and vertical and is used to guide ships and airplanes, reaching eighty miles. The tourist office of Chipiona Town Hall organizes guided tours to this guardian of the mouth of the river Guadalquivir, which from its highest point wonderful views from Doñana to the Bay of Cádiz are offered, through Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Chi-piona, with its Monasterio (Monastery) de Regla, fishing corrals and the beaches of Costa (Coast) Ballena.

It was started to be built in 1863 because sailors who usually sailed along the Guadalquivir river, required a lighthouse for them to be guided along the mouth of the longest river in Andalucía, a complicated area where ships usually ran aground. Today’s modern navigation systems will never substitute the lighthouse legend or the illusion children have when counting the flashes that shine every ten seconds in Chipiona.

Red buses

On the red conver-tible bus, people fee like closing their eyes and feel the breeze on their fa-ces. There are many places to visit in Cá-diz; it is the capital of the province and the oldest capital city in Western Eu-rope. The trip takes 1 hour and you are told how Cádiz was founded by the Phoe-nicians around 3,000 years ago. There are many small beauti-ful squares and ele-gant buildings so it is worthwhile getting off the bus, having a walk and back to the bus again.

The red bus route starts in the port of Cádiz and there are twelve stops for tourists to visit the Geno-vés park, Mina square, San Francisco, San Anto-nio, Mercado de Abastos (food market), the cathe-dral, San Juan de Dios square or España square. It is said that it is a city tailored to people, not large not small, there-fore the best is to have a walk and discover new places in the historic old town, Paseo Marítimo (seafront promenade) or its beaches.

Tourist trains

Arcos, Chiclana, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Olvera, Sanlúcar de Barrame-da, Sotogrande in San Roque, Tarifa and Vejer are provided with a tourist train to comfortably know their most interesting spots. Some of these towns offer this tourist train the whole year, others only in summer or during their main festivi-ties and celebrations.

Information about routes in each town is provided by the tourist offi-ces.

Green Track (Sierra de Cádiz)

The Green Track runs along an old 36- Km railway route with 30 tun-nels, four viaducts and five of train stations. A very attractive route for hiking, cycling, watching the vultures’ nests or contemplating so emblematic trees like the “Chaparro de la Vega”, a 700 year-old holm oak which is more than 13 metres high and declared a natural monument of Andalucía. The Green Track also offers restaurants and accommodation in old stations or in peculiar places such as train wagon-shaped apart-ments.

On a donkey or on a mule

Early in the morning or at dusk, www.senderos-sierra-plata.es you are guided along the paths of the Strait and the Alcornocales natu-ral parks on calm mules. Facinas and Zahara de los Atunes are the starting points for this so relaxing mule riding among ferns and with the best views over the landscapes of the south of the province.

The company www.losburrosdejuanino.com can also take you along the historic old town of Vejer, along the Tres Avemarías venue, visi-ting the Molino de Viento (wind mill) or along the paths of the Breña and Marismas de Barbate natural parks. In the las Marías equestrian centre of El Puerto de Santa Maríadonkey-polo can be practised. With a ball and a broom and without the glamour of polo in Sotogrande, but funnier for all the family.

Paths step by step There is a lot to walk in the province of Cádiz. There are more than 300 paths but here the easiest and most interesting ones that can be strolled with the family are shown. Continue and discover what you will find in each of the six natural parks in the province.

Alcornocales natural park

From this place, the African coast can be seen and it is known as “the virgin forest of the Iberian Peninsula”. Its microclimate, which is very similar to the tropical areas, has favoured the proliferation of lush and almost impenetrable vegetation. The narrow and deep river valleys –known as small tubes (canu-tos) – provide the same humidity that species in the Tertiary Age lived in. Then, hiking along the small tubes (canutos) is like embar-king into new adventures.

Page 19: The province of cádiz With the Family

17

Griffon vultures and eagle owls are usually in the park. Storks, booted ea-gles, falcons and numerous species meet in this so exceptional environment for ornithologists.

Alco

rnocales

Deers, roe deers, otters and meloncillos (a kind of mon-goose) find refuge in this park, which is considered as the best preserved forest in Europe and extends along the pro-vince from north to south, bordering to the north with the Grazalema park and to the south with the Strait.

Bay of Cádiz natural park

Marsh lands ,bea-ches, estuaries and pine forests form this park where you can see estuaries and salt marshes, one of the main in-dustries of the Bay in the 19th century, when there were more than one hun-dred salt marshes.

In front of the coast, you can see the Sancti Petri island, where Ancient Times character such as Hannibal or the Ro-man emperor Julius Caesar stayed.

There, there was the Phoenician sanc-tuary consecrated to Melkart, deity wor-shiped by the sailor who reached these coasts 3,000 years ago from the other side of the Medite-rranean sea.

The Breña and Marismas de Barbate natural park

Here the sea and the forest merge, pine forests with the guiddiness of cliffs and the inlets of Caños de Meca.White wagtails, canasteras and other birds fly around the hollows of these cliffs, which are more than one hundred metres high and flow into the Atlantic Ocean producing drink-water springs next to the sea shore. On the mountain: Barbate pine forest. The lighthouse and the Cape of Trafalgar are very near, the place where Commander Nelson died in 1805. Trafalgar Square is in the centre of London, whose name is taken from here and Commander Nelson is remembered today with this monumental square. Meanwhile, calmness continues in the park, despite the battles.

Paths

Go into Doñana

It is tricky, sailing or driving a 4 wheel-dri-ve vehicle instead of walking!. From Sanlúcar de Ba-rrameda you can cross the river Guadalqui-vir on board the Real Fernando vessel to go into the Doñana national park, a boat that pays tribute to the first steamboat built in Spain covering the ri-ver line Cádiz- Sanlú-car-Sevilla. The Real Fernando docks at different pla-ces of the park “En-torno de Doñana” until reaching the huts of the village la Plan-cha, inside the natio-nal park.

During the trip: breeze, fresh air, salt marshes, marshlands, wild boars, flamingos, grey herons… Do not forget your binocu-lars! The vessel is doc-ked at Bajo de Guía, in front of the centre “Fábrica de Hielo (ice factory)”, which offers a very interesting ex-hibition of the richness of Doñana.

You can also cross the large river of Andalu-cía – Arabians called Guadalquivir – on a typi-cal riverboat and go all over the park on an all terrain vehicle with a guide, who will tell us why this so beautiful ecosystem is unique. The “Entorno de Doñana” natural park extends along the banks of the river Guadalquivir in the province of Cádiz and it is a protection belt for the Doñana National Park, placed on the other side of the river. www.visitasdonana.com

Placed between two seas and two conti-nents. It is a marine terrestrial covering mountains, beaches and sea beds located between Tarifa and Algeciras.

Imperial eagles, wha-les and dolphins near the archaeological site of Baelo Claudia, the town that better re-presents the Roman urbanism in the Ibe-rian Peninsula.

Around thirty rock art caves and large sand dunes on the beaches of Bolonia and Punta Paloma, give an idea of the exceptional views and paths.

Sierra (mountains) de Grazalema natural park

It is the rainiest place in the peninsula having and annual average of 2,000 litres per square metre, which gives us an idea about its rich vegetation and the park landscapes. Among them, highlights the “pinsapar” the fir forest that survived the glaciations. It was declared as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1975 and Zone of Special Protection for Birds by the EU.

The Botanical Zoo takes part in around thirty programs for preser-ving the wild life and guaranteeing the environment of those species in their natural habitat. For ADENA WWF it is one of the best in Spain, which is visited by 200,000 persons every year. It has earned a well-deserved reputation because of its research work. But it is also funny and beautiful because there are more than 400 botanical species in its gar-dens and this is the reason why it has been declared an Asset of Cultu-ral Interest.

If visited early in the morning, just when ope-ning, you can see how ostriches love each other. Flamingos will come to greet you. You can also meet the Iberian lynx, the most mythical feli-ne, face to face. You will soon realise that you are in an oasis in the centre of Jerez.

In spring, plum trees, orange trees, the love tree, bougainvi l leas, blue jasmines are in full bloom. The best is to wander around and be surprised.

More than 1,200 animals of 225 representative species of the five con-tinents live in this reser-ve.

My friends the animals Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art

The show starts on Tuesdays and Thursdays (some Saturdays, too) at noon. Horses of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art of Jerez dance. This school trains riders, selects horses, preserves the prestige of riding and is an ambassador of Spain because it of its tours to other countries. Take the opportunity to see them if you are in Cádiz.

La Cartuja StudOn the outskirts of Jerez, it is very interesting to visit the Stud of the Cartuja-Hierro del Bocado, an institution that houses the most impor-tant worldwide reserve of Cartuja lineage horses. It has been in charge of this respon-sibility since the Middle Age, when the monks of la Car-tuja constituted a stud that soon became one of the most famous and valued.

The Recreo de las Cadenas is of special interest, a beautiful building projected by Char-les Garnier, who was the architect of the Paris Opera and the Casino of Monte Car-lo.The Royal School is also a good starting point to know the city.

Hi!, Can I help you?

School farms and Campsites

Knowing the rural world and discovering the Nature toge-ther with other children is one of the most rewarding experiences in the childhood.

If the visit to the farm be- comes a one-week stay we are going camping!: the first moments of fear, new friends, tears when saying goodbye. The unforgettable summer, with plays and laughter, when they learnt to live alone.

In the province of Cádiz there are genuine and le-gendary farm schools such as Buenavista of Arcos de la Frontera.

Nature classroom and workshops

There are many Nature rooms and places for workshops where schools take part, but many of them are open at weekends and holidays for receiving the families, doing sports and learning by playing.

www.ornipark.com is in Algeciras, an environmental education cen-tre to know the world of birds and their habitats. It is located in an emblematic place: the natural park of the Strait, one of the main places in the world for the bird migration.

www.lahuertadelnovo.blogspot.com is in Chiclana, with its wood-fired oven, greenhouse, ecological garden, farm and recycling workshops and restaurants for parents to eat calmly while children are playing!

www.salinasdechiclana.com varies its offer every month, always ha-ving salt marshes and estuaries as their source of inspiration: har-vesting, routes along the tide mills, guided visits to the salt museum or canoeing in the estuaries.

Once upon a time

Time Palace

As if it was a trip of Jules Verne, the Palacio del Tiempo (Time Palace) is in the centre of Je-rez, a stroll among watches, gemstones, special effects and a master watchmaker who surprises everybody with his appearance as a wise man of the 18th century. The Palacio Del Tiempo (Time Palace) is placed in an old pala-ce of the La Atalaya centre and it has a collection of more than 300 operating watches, Bo-hemian and Baccarat crys-tals, noble woods, nacre and ivory in a fantasy environment where you can enjoy one of the most famous chimes like the Big Ben chimes.Machines for measuring the time from France, England, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, most prominent among which are those curious models like a canyon-shaped sun watch, a bobbing time-me-asuring boat or a clown playing with dice cups.

Puppets and Phoenicians

You cannot leave Cádiz without meeting Aunt Norica, the naughty Batillo and the doctor Reticurcio Clarines¡. The oldest pieces of the puppet tradition of Cádiz are in the Museum of Cádiz. The visit to the Museum is a good excuse to know one of the archaeo-logical jewels of the province: the Phoenician sarcophagus found in the city, the only ones in Spain and ones of the few in the world. There is also an important dis-covery, added to the beauty and historic value of the pieces: Don (Mister) Pelayo Quintero was the director of the Museum for many years and he was convinced that there should be a woman’s sar-cophagi in the city. It appeared in 1980 under his house. He was a great researcher, he died in 1946.

A tale about castles

There are more than fifty castles, bastions, towers and walls in the province of Cádiz. From there you can see but you cannot be seen to send out smoke signals. To play pirates, minstrels or invaders. They were built to protect the territory against invaders form the North –overland- and from all the fronts that Cádiz has in the sea: 260 Km of coast. Placed between two continents and to seas, Cádiz is a whim of nature. This singularity and the determination of all peo-ples to own this land, have configured this legacy. Many of them can be visited and they are an icon for the towns they are in.

Further information can be found in the tourist offices.

mans and archaeological Romans and archaeological remains.

The archaeological site of Baelo Claudia is one of the main spots in the province because of its archaeological wealth and the beauty of the beach of Bolonia (Tarifa), where it is.More than one hundred persons visit it every year, mainly in sum-mer when concerts, classical theatre performances and dramati-sed tours take place. This Roman city, which was founded in the 2nd century B.C. next to the cove of Bolonia, started its decline with the tsunami that was supposed to devastate the city in the 2nd century A.C.

You should visit Carteia in San Roque, where a pool that looks valid for today will catch your attention. Of Phoenician origin, it became the first Latin colony out of the Italic land.

In El Puerto de Santa Maria, the archaeological site Doña Blanca and the Sierra (mountains) de Cádiz also have the Archaeological Route of the Pueblos Blancos (White Villages).

There are also several history-interpretation centres provided with audiovisual resources which are very striking for children.

Cádiz: Two Seas

In a province with 260 kilometres of coastline and placed between two seas, water sports have a main role in all the beaches and in inland waters, too! There are nautical schools, companies and clubs to start water sports from 3 years old, depending on the type of sport and activity: Surf, wind, kite and paddle surf, becoming a helmsperson and sai-ling on small boats or catamarans, practising canoeing or kayak.

Cádiz Dos Mares (Two Seas), formerly known as Estación Náutica de la Bahía de Cádiz (Nautical Station of the Bay of Cádiz), is an association composed of hotels, restaurants, refreshment stalls, clubs, schools, marinas and marine businesses which offer courses and activities in the Bay of Cádiz and even complementary leisure activities in Jerez. www.cadizdosmares.com.

Also noteworthy is the www.asociacionsolosurf.com in Cádiz, a therapeutic centre that develops activi-ties for children over 2 years old with special educa-tion needs and disabled persons.Learning, fun and equal opportunities for everybody in the water.

The coast of Cádiz is also one of the most beautiful underwater landscapes in Europe due to the water transparency, the impressive biodiversity of its flora and fauna and the large quantity of shipwrecks. It is known that Phoenicians wanted to be divers. Then and now, the sea offers dazzling visibility con-ditions reaching up to thirty metres in depth.

Riding lessons and going horse riding

The province is a reference and an opportunity to learn horse riding or going on riding routes from three years old. Many festivals, shows and sports competitions celebrated in this provin-ce, would not be understood without the participation of horses, linked to this land since the Tartessian culture. Juan Romero Burgos

Juan Romero, who is the author of the illus-trations in this publication, is a specialist in describing Cádiz in his own way. A funny, amusing and fantastic way of painting the province, describing it through his colours. His feelings for this small place in Andalucía have been titled “El Sur de Romero (the South of Romero)”. A multi-colour destination that is well worth visiting on the Internet and says a lot about him: an extraordinary self-taught artist who still sees his land with the curiosity of children. Immense, fresh and friendly. This is the way Juan sees the province, despi-te the time and distance, Romero was born in Barbate (Cádiz) in 1964, but he soon moved to Barcelona with his parents. There, he beca-me interested in the magic of illustrations and in the 80´s, with the comics boom, he started to paint cartoons in the Rambles of Barcelona. He left Catalonia and went back home and found his promised land. He expressed all he had dreamed in a blog www.elsurderomero.com. He is its creative director and the house brand but he is also involved in many other projects. Among them, this “Cádiz with the family” for children of all ages, even grandpa-rents, to know the province better and enjoy it. Among his works, it is worth mentioning “Isla Peques (Children Island)”, the children’s section of the tourist portal of San Fernan-do www.turismosanfernando.org. He has also made book covers “Güichis Ultramarinos y Otras historias cotidianas de la Isla (Güichis Ultramarine and other everyday stories of the Island)” and “El Cinematógrafo (The Cinema-tograph)”. In 2011 he was awarded the first prize of the poster contest of the Carnival of Barbate and Conil de la Frontera. Currently, he is working on a comic about a picador, a varilarguero of the Isla de León (Lion Island), who works as a garrochista in Jerez in 1808. He continues, with his unlimi-ted imagination, creating historic and every-day characters and even bringing stones to life, because nature and patrimony have ano-ther sense from his view: the world, accor-ding to Romero.
