Michael Donow Interim SBA/BS November 20, 2013 1 T - 11/28/13, The Leader Fee: $14.28 answered with two personal fouls and a pass interference call to allow the Hilltoppers to gobble substantial time off the clock and march in to score after 13 plays when Dougherty bashed two yards for his third touchdown. Oblachinski, who finished with 43 rushing yards, completed 10 passes for 128 yards, including an intercep- tion. Donavin Walker, who had three receptions for 23 yards, had 32 rush- ing yards and threw a 24-yard strike to McCaffrey. Luke Christiano had five receptions for 61 yards, and McCaffrey had three receptions for 68 yards. Defensively, Christiano finished with 15 tackles, linebacker Rob Delsandro made 11 tackles and de- fensive back Kevin Trotter made 10 tackles. Linebacker Colin Scanlon made eight tackles, while linebacker Niko Cappello and lineman Rob O’Shaughnessy each made six. McCaffrey, Sean Leonard and Jake Matthews each added five tackles. Dougherty finished with 124 yards on 26 carries, while Terry carried 16 times for 85 yards and completed seven passes for 105 yards. “We had opportunities. I didn’t do a good enough job calling the of- fense. Our kids played hard the whole day. We were just a couple of plays short. Defensively, we were fairly solid the whole day. If you were here in September, that was a debacle. Today, we fought all the way through,” Coach Rosenmeier said. Cranford 14 0 0 0 14 Summit 14 6 8 7 35 kickoff of the game when Cougar Troy Kettler booted an onsides kick and the Hilltoppers recovered the ball on their 46. Seven plays later, Terry scooted five yards for the touchdown with 10:08 on the clock. The Cougars answered with a 10-play, 69-yard scoring drive concluded by Oblachinski’s five-yard touchdown run with 6:31 on the clock. After a conventional kickoff, the Hilltoppers returned the ball from the five to the 35 then mixed four running plays with four passing plays to hit pay dirt when Terry bashed in from the two with 4:12 on the clock. Back came the Cougars with a six-play, 73- yard scoring drive that was concluded with Oblachinski’s 36-yard touch- down pass to Jack McCaffrey over the middle to knot the score, 14-14, with 2:02 left in the first quarter. The Cougars’ second gamble, an- other onsides kick recovered by the Hilltoppers, however, worked when they held Summit to three-and-out and took possession at their own 25. Unfortunately, a pair of holding pen- alties stifled their offensive answer. Late in the second quarter, the Hilltoppers ended an 11-play, 65-yard march with Dougherty’s two-yard touchdown run. A bad snap on the conversion attempt left Summit with a 20-14 lead at the half. After the failure of the third gamble put Summit in the driver’s seat, des- peration resulted in a series of penal- ties that went in favor of the Hilltoppers. Despite a chop block call against Summit, the Cougars’ defense Devils’ only TD drive with a 37-yard sprint, and quarterback Jan Cocozziello ended it with a two-yard run. Blue Devil Dan Clark had two fumble recoveries. Plainfield 0 0 7 2 9 Westfield 7 0 0 0 7 2004 — Turkey was much tastier for running back Aaron Hale, who had three TDs, and his Cardinal team- mates when they ripped Westfield, 40-0, in Plainfield on the 100th show- down between the two foes. Westfield 0 0 0 0 0 Plainfield 6 8 12 14 40 2005 — The 101st meeting be- tween the two rivals was highlighted by one huge TD run and a hit just inches from the goal line that pre- vented a TD, eventually leading to a 9-0 Cardinal victory at Kehler Sta- dium. The Cardinals’ hero was Reggie Dixon, who found a seam in the de- fensive middle and raced 67 yards for the TD in the third quarter. Plainfield’s other score came on a 27-yard field goal by Oscar Valez with 5:54 re- maining in the game. Blue Devil safety Marcus Allen Graham recorded his ninth intercep- tion of the season to break the all- time WHS season record. Plainfield 0 0 6 3 9 Westfield 0 0 0 0 0 2006 — The Jim DeSarno era be- gan with a 17-7 Westfield Turkey Day victory in Plainfield. Senior run- ning back George Cornell rushed for 121 yards, including a one-yard TD to seal the victory. Quarterback Tom Bonard booted a 22-yard field goal and completed a 10-yard TD strike to receiver Sean Ferro. Westfield 0 3 7 7 17 Plainfield 0 7 0 0 7 2007 — Senior running back Malcolm Allen cashed in on TD runs of one yard, five yards and three yards, and junior wide receiver Chris Sheehan turned a pass from quarter- back Tony DiIorio into a 27-yard TD to give the Blue Devils just enough points to hold off Plainfield, 28-27, at Kehler Stadium. Linebacker John Dugan (13 tackles) was the Alpha dog with three major sacks and sev- eral throws for losses. Plainfield 014 7 6 27 Westfield 14 0 7 7 28 2008 — Numerous key defensive plays, a five-yard TD run and a pair of breakaway TD runs of 45 yards and 74 yards from senior halfback Ricardo Johnson was just enough for the Blue Devils to absorb two fourth-quarter TDs by Plainfield in a 21-19 victory in Plainfield. Nick Matthews and Eric Moran each recovered a fumble, and Jihaad Billups had an interception. Westfield 7 0 7 7 21 Plainfield 0 7 0 12 19 2009 — The Blue Devils feasted on the Cardinals, 26-6, in Westfield. Quarterback Danny Kerr completed 13 of 19 pass attempts for 137 yards, including an 11-yard TD to Pat Gray and an eight-yard TD to Aiden Scanlon. Running backs AJ Murray and Joe Ondi each ran for a TD. Plainfield 0 0 0 6 6 Westfield 614 6 0 26 2010 — The 7-3 Blue Devils liter- ally grounded the 4-6 Cardinals with their swarming defense, while tram- pling the Cardinals’ defense with a ground game that chewed up 224 yards and blanketing them with an aerial attack that totaled 204 yards in a 35-6 triumph. A.J. Murray galloped for 148 yards to break the 1,000-yard plateau for the season. Murray, who had an intercep- tion, had TD runs of 29 yards and 14 yards, and added another TD on a short screen pass that he turned into a 60-yard scoring play. He also had a nine-yard reception to bring his direct offensive total on the day to 217 yards. Westfield 722 0 6 35 Plainfield 0 0 0 6 6 2011 — Despite several WHS records being set, the shocker came when Cardinal Chad Jno-Lewis’ two- point conversion in the first quarter came back to haunt the Blue Devils in a 22-21 Plainfield victory. Blue Devil running back James O’Rourke set the WHS career carries in a season with 259 and broke Jan Cocozziello’s career interception record with his 13th, while tying Marcus Allen Graham’s 2005 season record with nine. Quarterback Nate Mitchell surpassed Tony DiIorio to establish a new season passing record of 1,255 yards. Westfield led 21-8, but the Cardinals stunned the Blue Devils’ defense when quarterback Dii’JonAllen-Jordan found Ricky Barnett, who scored the first TD, unattended in the center of the field. From there, Barnett flew downfield into the end zone to complete a 67-yard TD with 2:37 on the clock. The killer came when the Cardi- nals’ defense stopped Westfield on the one-yard line then their offense answered with a 14-play, 99-yard scoring drive that ended with Allen- Jordan’s one-yard plunge to make the score, 22-21. Plainfield 8 7 0 7 22 Westfield 14 7 0 0 21 2012 — The Blue Devils silenced the Cardinals, 30-16, in Plainfield. Tight end David Kane played a major role in the offensive punch by turning three of quarterback Christian Menares-Brown’s passes into TD receptions of 50 yards, two yards and three yards, respec- tively. Kane finished with six re- ceptions for 66 yards. The “Triple S” defensemen, Chris Sweeney, Joe Scaglione and Jackson Simcox sacked Cardinal quarterback Jon Roldan four times.
