The grand finale of the community “Beautify Butte” Campaign officially came to an end on Saturday, May 17. Each year, a dedicated group of volunteers from the Civic Improvement Committee and other organizations volunteer at the Butte Landfill to greet people and hand out prizes to those individuals who utilize the landfill on that day to discard their trash. Approximately 350 people came out that morning in support of cleaning up and greening up Butte.
This year’s campaign was one of the most successful in many years. A large number of individuals and organizations called the Chamber to “Adopt a Lot” for the campaign. All tree vouchers have been given out for this year and through the efforts of the Civic Improvement Committee, new garbage can containers will adorn the sidewalks of Harrison Avenue. The beautiful flower baskets will soon be lining our streets. These baskets, more specifically along Harrison Avenue. and at the Berkeley Pit, were a result of the driving force of the Civic Improvement Committee and The Montana Standard.
On a more serious note, at the June Civic Improvement Committee meeting, Sharon Chebul tendered her resignation as Chair of the committee. Sharon has been involved in excess of twenty years and has been a huge factor in being the watchdog on many fronts. Sharon chaired the Beautify Butte Campaign for many years. She monitored the Harrison Avenue repaving project, making sure that there would be trees, scrubs and irrigation. Her group has planted thousands of flowers, assisted in planting trees, and policed the community to make sure property owners were maintaining their property. These are just a few of the many projects that Sharon has been a part of over the years.
This is a shining example of how one person can and did make a difference in our community. On behalf of the Butte Chamber of Commerce and the entire community, I would like to thank Sharon for going above and beyond the call of duty. You are very much appreciated. Sharon has committed to remaining on the committee to help with projects as much as she is able to do.
In closing, I would like to thank every individual and organization who has helped to clean up our community. An important fact to remember is that Beautify Butte is just not a one month project, but we have to continue our efforts year-round to accomplish our goal of a cleaner and greener Butte. Keep up the good work.

On May 22nd, Marquis Assisted Living hosted the
monthly Chamber Business Card Social. The well-attended event took place in their Marquis Community Center.
The spread of food and beverage was provided and attended to by their in-house team. The big winner of the evening was awarded a Gift Certificate to dine at Lydia’s Supper Club.

Oh how wonderful it is to have warm days and evenings, green grass, and leaves on the trees. I’m not sure when it happened, but spring/
pre-summer is here!
I was asked to give a presentation regarding CVB & TBID funding and projects to an ad hoc economic committee comprised of some of the
Commissioners and the Chief Executive. Together with Bill McGladdery, the Vice-Chair of the Governor’s Tourism Advisory Council and
President our TBID, we met with the group on May 28th at the Courthouse. From my perspective the group appreciated and gained some
valuable knowledge regarding these two tourism promotion entities.
Over May 28 & 29 I had the honor of addressing some Butte High students, as they prepare to enter the workforce. As a past hotel
manager I shared--or rather—“soapboxed,” on what makes a good employee and co-worker. Be on the lookout for these dynamic young
people: they are armed with SuperHost certification, a great deal of energy, and a desire to showcase their knowledge.
I just returned from the Tourism Advisory Council meeting in Red Lodge where all CVB’s and Regions gave brief presentations on their FY
14-15 Marketing Plans. Many changes have taken place over the past year; a new strategic plan, re-boot of the Rules & Regulations and a
whole new way of preparing and submitting our marketing plans. I love all the new changes as the process has gone from a tedious one to
a very simple and streamlined process.
The CVB is currently working on Project Applications to fund An Rí Rá and Evel Knievel Days with bed tax dollars. The print bid for the new
visitors’ guide was sent out and awarded to the lowest bidder, The Montana Standard.
The TBID recently funded: An Rí Rá, Montana Folk Festival, a haunted weekend event in October, Running Amuck for Scholarship Bucks in
August, SWMT map project, and event assistance for groups needing transportation to and from venue locations.
Several projects I am working on include: promotional placemats to be used at many of our locally-owned restaurants to promote our
community and her offerings, a meeting planner FAM trip which has been re-scheduled to September, a comprehensive listing of all
meeting facilities both traditional and non-traditional, the continuing process of educating our front line employees of the many attractions
and events in our community, and helping Mainstreet Uptown Butte with a “survey in a box” which will assist our community in getting
much-needed data on our visitors including expenditures.
Remember to let us know of any events and happenings so we can be prepared to share information with our residents and visitors.

fight. Have your self-defense items (stun gun,
pepper spray, kubaton) out and ready to use!

Do you have an overabundance of empty baskets piled up in the basement or taking up valuable
space in the garage?
Through the month of June the Chamber is asking for your donations of new or gently used baskets. The Chamber can repurpose them and use them
to assemble theme baskets to give away or auction off at the Chamber/Digger Classic Golf
Tournament in August and the Chamber Annual Dinner in October.
Just drop your donations of baskets off at The Chamber. We truly appreciate it!
On May 7th, a number of local businesses were able to provide their employees with training and information from world-class speaker and Customer Service Guru Bill Drury.
This is the second year in a row that the Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce has worked with Bill Drury to hold a seminar aimed at helping local businesses increase their customers’ satisfaction by impressing upon employees the
importance of customer service and providing them with tools to improve their skills in dealing with customers.
This year’s seminar also covered how to improve communication and teamwork to strengthen the entire team—which leads to better customer satisfaction, more repeat customers —which directly helps a business increase their bottom line.
Desiree Shogren, General Manager of chamber member Comfort Inn of Butte, who sent multiple employees, said after the seminar, “These seminars are extremely valuable. In an industry as diverse as ours, it’s helpful to impress upon all our employees from many different departments the importance of working together for the benefit of our guests. The guest is at the heart of everything we do and it’s helpful to have an expert who can reinforce that message for our employees.”
The Chamber was very pleased with the participation from the local business community. The event was held in the recently completed meeting space at the new Butte Brewery building. Everyone at the Chamber wants to say thanks to our attendees and sponsors, and we encourage those members who weren't able to participate to keep your eyes out for next year—we are hoping to bring more business development events such as this to our members!
