Computer Graphics I- Final Review The written portion of your final exam will be 25 multiple choice questions and one free response. Some parts of the exam will be related to examples, images and pictures. Multiple Choice questions will be identification based. Know the terms and you will be successful! Your free response (written part) will be discussing the compositional terms/elements used in a poster design. Adobe Photoshop The program:

Adobe Photoshop is a bitmapped or raster graphics program, meaning it is made up of a dot matrix data structure called pixels. Adobe Photoshop is a resolution dependent program. The Menus:

File: Save and Open Files Edit: Transform: Rotate, Scale, Warp, Distort Fill: fill a file layer with color Free Transform: Scale and Rotate at the same time Image: Check Image Size and Resolution Image Adjustments> Hue Saturation, Color Balance, Brightness Contrast Layer: New Layer Merge layers Layer via Copy Select: Transform Selection, Inverse Selection

Filter: Image Effects. Example: Blur and Gaussian Blur The Palettes:

Layers: Used to organize images, image transparencies, create and delete layers, blending options, text effects (layer styles), linking layers and masking Brushes: Used to edit various brush options: brush size, brush type, brush spacing (painted poster) Color and Swatches: Picks and changes colors for painting and filling Navigator: To navigate the file: zoom in and zoom out, pan through file when zoomed in

The Tools:

The Selection Tools: The Move Tool- arrow that moves images Elliptical Tools- Circle and Square “marquee” tools Lasso Tools- 3 lasso tools free hand selection of images and objects Quick Selection Tools- select pixels based on color tolerance The Painting Tools: Brush Tool- paints free hand and used to mask images Gradient Tool- used for multiple color backgrounds and masking images Paint Bucket- hidden underneath gradient tool- used to “dump” solid color on to a layer The Text Tools: Used to type text in an image or used to mask text (photo with in a text effect)

Color Squares: Foreground and Background Colors. Click on square and change color Image Adjustments: These techniques you used on the Image Adjustment lesson and were an option on the Idiom project. Change the color of an image, change the brightness and contrast of an image or “tweak” or “mix” color balance

Layer Clipping (or Clipping Mask) This technique was used in the bus shelter/bus advertising design. You can take an image on one layer and "clip it" inside of another layer. Here is an example of the technique:

You can tell there is Layer Clip by the indented arrow of layer 1

Masking: Gradient Masking, Brush Masking, Text Masking Gradient Masking: used to blend two large images together using the Masking feature and a black to transparent gradient:

Brush Masking: used for detail work in blending and fading an image using the masking feature and the black or white colored paint brush to add or subtract to the image:

Text Masking: used with the Masking Text Tool to create a selection with text and capture an image within text

Adobe Illustrator

The program: Illustrator is a vector based program which means it uses geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, shape to represent images in computer graphics. Illustrator uses Bezier Curves (mathematical plotting of curves and points) to draw shapes and lines.

The Tools: The Selection Tool: Moves, Rotates and Scales shapes and lines

The Direct Selection Tool: Moves and Edits anchor points of a line or shape

Warping/Effects: Edit and Add distortions to Shapes

The Pen Tool: The primary drawing tool in the course. Click to create anchor points, re-click anchor point to convert them, use the handle/pull tabs to edit

1. Anchor Points (end points of line segments) 2. An Anchor Point that has been Converted (click on it) 3. Pull handles (adjust curve)

Paths (Shapes): Anything drawn in Illustrator is called a path.

A shape is made up of two parts: Stroke (the outline #1 shown above) and Fill (the inside color #2 shown above)

Art and Design Techniques used throughout the course: Principles of Art and Design There will be several Multiple Choice questions on the terms learned and used in class. There will also be one free-response (written). The question will show you a movie poster design. You will be required to write 3-5 sentences about 2 compositional techniques used in the poster. You will identify the technique AND explain how it is used. Color Unity: Color Unity is the principle you used in both the Idiom and Photo Masking Projects. The principle says use similar colors in images and text to unify the overall composition of the design. Like this:

Green Background, Green Text and Green Figure= Color Unity Focal Point: Focal Point or Point of Emphasis is the main image or thing in your design that you want people to look at first. It is your attention getter. You learned three different ways to make a focal point this semester: Hierarchy of Scale: This says that larger images are more important that other images. To make an image your Focal Point you simply make it larger than other images. Like this: Look at the Clock and the knife

Page 10: The program - Hatboro-Horsham School District / Overvie€¦ ·  · 2015-05-12Computer Graphics I- Final Review . The written portion of your final exam will be 25 multiple choice

Optical Center: This says put your focal point in the upper third of the design because the human eye tends to look top to bottom in a design. That is how you read a paper and look at a design. Like this: Look up at the Painting and Hand

Rule of Thirds: This is a mathematical way to organize your focal point. Divide the design into thirds horizontally and vertically. Where those lines intersect is where you should put your focal point. Like this: look at the flower

Shape and Size: In the Photo Mask design you used objects of different shapes and sizes to create a variety of sizes and to create more interest in the design. Like this: notice the large size of the fish and the smaller size of the fisherman

Value Mapping (Value) Value is a term used in traditional and digital illustration that describes lighting. Darks, Tones and Highlights are the three key components to natural lighting. You created value mapping in the celebrity contrast drawing. Like this:

Typography: Typography is what language looks like. It is the artistic approach and design of fonts and text. You created and edit text in Illustrator and Photoshop. Like this:
