Bearden possesses many of the key ingredients that comprisea winning football team. A savvy returning quarterback? Check. A speedy tailback
who excels at making guys miss? Check. A pair of big, athletichead-knocking linebackers? Check.
Up front, however, questions plague the Bulldogs. Beardenheads into the 2010 campaign having to replace all but one starteron the offensive line and its entire interior defensive front.
Uncertainty plagues both lines of scrimmage as kickoff for theseason opener looms, but Bearden coach Brad Taylor knows pre-cisely what he can expect from his four team captains—all return-ing starters.
Kyle Riemer is back for his second season at quarterback afterthrowing for more than 1,200 yards last season.
“Pound for pound, I don’t think there’s a better quarterbackaround,” Taylor said of the 5-foot-9 senior. “He’s got a big arm forhis size and he can move and run well.”
It certainly helps to have an explosive tailback like DevrinYoung waiting for the handoff. A 5-7 senior, Young has run formore than 2,800 yards and 36 touchdowns in the past two years.Young also will help out in the secondary at times.
“Devrin has that speed that everybody likes and is looking for,”Taylor said. “It’s hard to coach speed. It’s just something eitheryou got it or you don’t and he’s been blessed with a lot of it.”
On defense, Drew Williamson and Peyton Landers are the bigguns. Landers (6-1, 181) led the Bulldogs in tackles last seasonand also contributed 375 rushing yards while catching 15 balls for200-plus yards receiving. Williamson (6-2, 205), an inside line-backer, created havoc in opposing backfields throughout the 2009

CAK has the luxury of bringing back the Region 2-AAOffensive MVP in quarterback Quinn Epperly. That’s not the only benefit of having a returning starter at
quarterback, especially when dealing with the Warriors. CoachRusty Bradley runs what he calls a “Spread Coast” offense—aWest Coast attack run from a spread formation that places sometremendous mental and schematic responsibilities on whomeverthe signal caller is.
“It’s nice having a returning starter at that position, justbecause you’re not having to start at ground zero,” Bradley saidof Epperly, who threw for a whopping 2,604 yards last seasonwith 23 touchdowns. “He has an unbelievable foundation. Plushe’s very smart anyway. He really has just grown in the mentalaspect of the game.
“There’s a lot of film study, there’s a lot of meeting time withme,” Bradley added regarding the burden a QB faces in the“Spread Coast” scheme. “There’s a lot our quarterback has to doevery snap—not only when the ball is snapped but every play.Getting the protection set, identifying the front, any adjust-ments. Then when the ball’s snapped you have four seconds tosee what the defense has to do and adjust accordingly. It’s a lotto ask.”
Beating Alcoa is a tall task to ask of any team these days—andthe Tornadoes sent CAK packing from the playoffs in a 31-10 losslast season. Alcoa went on to claim another state championship, and looks to be a powerhouse yet again after thrashingFarragut—a 6A school—in a scrimmage.
For Bradley, success still comes down to working hard andstaying healthy.
“The biggest thing is the work ethic of our kids. Theywork unbelievably hard just to maximize their God-
given ability,” the coach observed. “When you get 57guys, along with our coaching staff, who live outthat philosophy and live out that belief, then youcan do good things.
“We may not be overly talented at every positionbut what we have is absolutely maximized at every
position.”Epperly, who’s been offered a scholarship at
Princeton, obviously possesses ability. But he’s notthe only guy on the team who’s a potential stand-out.
Tailback Carson Pegram, the Warriors’ top rush-er last season, returns for another season. ZachMead and Davis Howell, the team’s second- and
third-leading receivers, also come back. CAK also boasts three returnees along the offensive line:
center Steven Fortner and guards Mike Alford and ZachSharp. Sharp has two years’ experience as a starter.
The 4-4 defense is strong up the middle. Both tackles—Fortner and Clay Powers return. So do the two inside
linebackers, leading tackler Tyler Eichholtz and JacobDuncan. Colby Maddux is back at outside linebacker, and should be book-ended by Zach Scott.

Following the shuffle that took place with last sea-son’s reclassification by the TSSAA, District 4 isarguably the toughest Class AAA league in the
state. Farragut faces perennial state powers likeMaryville and Catholic on an annual basis.
“Without a doubt,” Admirals coach Eddie Courtneysaid when asked about the formidable competition hefaces in the district. “Put Maryville in there, Catholic; Two years ago both those teams came off statechampionships. Us and Bearden made strides ingetting better.
“It is very tough.”The Admirals take it one step farther with a
brutal non-conference schedule, whichincludes Dobyns-Bennett, Oak Ridge andRiverdale this season.
“If you’re going to be one of the best, you’vegot to play the best and we do the samething when we scrimmage peo-ple,” Farragut coach EddieCourtney said.
Thus, the new starters inFarragut’s lineup will bethrown right into the firethanks to the rigorousschedule.
At least the Admiralshave enough team depth tominimize the number of kidswho will be playing bothways—especially on the line.
Farragut figures to go eight-deep on the offensive front, and none of those eight areneeded on the defensive line asthe 2010 season opens.
Bobby Fricks, a 5-foot-11, 230-pound senior, is the incumbent cen-ter. Sophomore Patrick Doucette (6-0, 270) logged some starts as afreshman. Daniel Knipp (6-0,270), Miguel Aranada (5-11,230), Clint Callahan andJustin Mallory are among theother candidates for playingtime in the trenches.
If the big guys up front canbe consistent, Farragut’s skillpersonnel are talented enoughto make some big plays.
Montre Hudson is the topreturning rusher, tallying 281 yardsand three touchdowns in 2009.Jacob Johnson also got his share ofcarries, and the multifacetedTaino Perez is a threat as aback, receiver or kickreturner. They’re joinedby Jordan Freeman, a

transfer. All four will get a chance tocarry the ball, especially early in the sea-son when it’s still so hot and humid.
Cody Rule actually was the Admirals’third-leading rusher last season, with 28carries for 160 yards. He takes over atquarterback in Farragut’s spreadoption, replacing Reese Browning.
“He has done a remarkable jobof trying to understand ouroffense, do the right things,”Courtney said.
Rule is a dual-threat QB, andwhile he doesn’t have the livearm that Browning possessed, the junior has been solid onshort and intermediateroutes while continuing toimprove his ability tothrow the deep ball.
Courtney expects tosubstitute liberally ondefense, where theAdmirals are sticking withtheir 3-3 stack scheme.Don’t be surprised if
Farragut rotates as many as seven kids atthe three down lineman positions, andsix guys look to be inthe mix at thethreeline-
backer spots.Jacob Johnson returns at free safety,
and is the team’s top returningtackler with 48 total
stops. BrooksHarper
entershis
third year as a starting linebacker andanchors that group; he made 36 stopswith two tackles for loss and a fumblerecovery though he had to sit out a cou-ple of games. Fellow senior RobbieLeonard also returns at linebacker.
Farragut made a couple of positionmoves to give the defense more speed.Thomas Jackson, last year’s starting mid-dle linebacker, now plays defensive end.Harper has replaced Jackson as the manin the middle at linebacker. Freeman willget time at end as well. Madison Brownis listed as an end but he’ll also playsome linebacker depending on the situ-ation.
Perez returns to man the Admirals’left cornerback spot.
The Final Verdict: Farragut went 8-2 last season and still had to settle
for the fifth seed in the East side ofthe 6A playoff bracket. WithMaryville, Catholic, Bearden andthe three tough non-conferencefoes lying in wait, the Admiralswill be challenged to match thatrecord—much less improve uponit.

There are a few questions that exist in thedefensive line as well as the secondary.
For Bradley, it all goes back to having theproper mind-set and being ready to playfrom the opening kickoff of every singlegame.
“Doing what we’ve done in thepast kind of put a bull’s eye onour chest,” he said. “People aregoing to come ready to playand we have to be mentallyfocused and mentally ready toplay every week. Every weekwith the schedule we have, it’sgoing to be a tough challenge.”
The Final Verdict: Can any-one beat Alcoa? Right nowthat looks like the burningquestion statewide inTennessee high-school foot-ball. With so much return-ing talent on the offensiveside of the ball, a groupheadlined by Epperly, CAKmight never have a betterchance to upset theTornadoes in its pursuit ofstate glory.

campaign, registering seven sacks and 19 tackles for loss as Bearden went 8-2and qualified for the 6A playoffs.
It’s that front line, however, that provides cause for concern. Austin Sackett (5-8, 215) started at offensive guard last season. He’s the lone
incumbent in the trenches for Bearden on that side of the ball. Junior DaytonReynolds (6-1, 246) is the tentative starter at center. Harry Patty (6-1, 257)played some on both lines in 2009 and will be expected to take a big step forwardin 2010.
“He’s a big old kid,” Taylor said. “For him, it’s just making sure he’s in the prop-er condition where he can play for 48 minutes.”
Taylor figures a few guys will have to play both ways on the line, but he’ll try tominimize those situations. He anticipates that the Bulldogs will handle the voidat defensive tackle in their 4-4 scheme by committee.
At least there’s more stability at the back end of the defense. Returning starterStefon Stephens joins Young in the secondary.
Offensively, Bearden will stick with its two-back scheme. Though Reamer willremain in the shotgun 99 percent of the time, the run game is influenced by clas-sic I-formation principles and is augmented by a passing game fashioned afterthe West Coast style. Bearden also will run some Pistol—with the QB a bit closerto the line of scrimmage and the tailback behind him.
“The key for us is how our D-line and our O-line play,” Taylor summarized.“We’ve got some big bodies. We’ve got some guys who can do it. They have to
show that they can do it.”The Final Verdict: Young is among the elite skill-position players in the
Knoxville area this season. With all the other returning talent, Bearden has plen-ty of cause to be hopeful. If the line comes together, the Bulldogs could havequite the season. But Bearden still has a very tough road to the playoffs.Remember that last year, Bearden went 8-2 and still settled for a No. 8 seed.

Brad Taylor, Bearden head coach, said 3-Minute HWWW “is great anytime guysget to compete. Guys take a lot of pride in their West Knoxville schools.”
Scott Meadows, Catholic head coach, said such a Westside battle “is a great idea.I think there's some bragging rights for West Knoxville. I think it's something forthe players to be playing for.”
Jones said the 3-Minute HWWW competition “is awesome, especially with thegreat football teams that are out west.
It's only going to make people get better and continue to work hard just trying tokeep up with the guys that are on top.”
“It's pretty thick right underneath,” Jones added. “You've got some young guyslike us doing everything they can do to try and get up that ladder and be in the mid-dle of that mix.”
Bradley added, “Anytime you can be crowned the winner of some type of trophyor be recognized for excellence on the field, that’s always a positive.”

Hardin Valley Academy got thrown rightinto the fire in 2009. Will the rigorouson-the-job training that took place last
season pay off for the school’s fledgling foot-ball program in 2010?
After surviving its inaugural season of varsi-ty football, the Hawks bring back nearly every-
one from a team that took plenty oflumps during the 2009 campaign.
“Last season, they were just tryingto figure out what Friday nights areall about,” coach Wes Jones said. “I
think our team’s going to be muchmore prepared.”
Hardin Valley lost justseven players of signifi-
cance from the 2009squad.
“We’re returningbasically 20
starters,” thecoach noted.
Three ofthose incumbent starters will
factor prominently in whether ornot this neophyte program cantake a step forward in its secondseason of existence.
The best of the bunch is proba-bly Zach Clevenger, an all-regionselection last season. Clevenger isone of the top players in theKnoxville area, and a provenforce who can disrupt the best-laid plans of opposing offenses. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound seniorracked up 121 total tackles in
2009 with 13 sacks and 27 tackles for loss. He’s one of the anchors of the Hawks’ 4-4defense. Clevenger also is a standout atreceiver, averaging 16.7 yards per catch lastseason. He’s put in plenty of hours in theweight room preparing his body for the com-ing campaign.
The quarterback, Jake Bishop, also returnsafter throwing for almost 1,000 yards in 2009to run the Hawks’ offense. Jones runs a multi-ple scheme that’s based out of an I-formation,but Hardin Valley might shake things up a bitthis season. Putting guys in motion is a possi-bility. The Hawks even could run some of thespread from time to time.
Jones says this 5-10, 185-pound senior isfootball smart, and joins Clevenger as one ofthe key team leaders.
Junior tailback Dorian Eskridge will providethe team’s big-play element. Eskridge foughtsome nagging injuries last season, but stillrolled up 346 yards on 73 carries. The 5-8,175-pound Eskridge isn’t the biggest guy onthe football field, but he’s a shifty runner.
They’ll be trying to help Hardin Valleyscratch out some respectability. After beatingCarter 7-0 in its first-ever varsity game, theHawks’ inaugural season promptly went intothe tank. Hardin Valley lost its next ninegames, scoring 15 or less points in eight ofthose contests and seven or less on four occa-sions. Six times, Hardin Valley got beat by atleast 21 points.
“I don’t think we had any false hopes,”Jones said regarding last year’s performance.

Every football team has to make lineup adjustmentsover the course of a season.Catholic got some early, unwanted practice when
top returning rusher Cody Shirley blew out his knee in ascrimmage against Beech.
Taylor Kennedy replaced Shirley in the scrimmage, and the 5-foot-10, 160-pound senior will remain theprimary ball carrier for the Fighting Irish as the 2010season begins.
“It’s hard to replace Cody,” Catholic coach ScottMeadows admitted. “I’ve talked with him, and he’s
going to have to be a vocal leader in the locker room.Plus, he’s going to be another set of eyes for the runningbacks, whenever they’re coming off the sideline.”
Sophomore Nolan Coulter (5-11, 165) is taking sec-ond-string tailback reps in Catholic’s spread offensewith Shirley now sidelined.
Catholic is unique to many Knoxville teams, as a line-man is the premier star on the roster while the guys
playing the traditionally glamorous skill positions areunknown quantities.
The star in this case is Kyler Kerbyson (6-4, 285),who made a verbal commitment to Tennessee just a
couple of days before Catholic participated in the jam-boree at Neyland Stadium.
Kerbyson plays offensive tackle and defensive line forthe Fighting Irish. In less than a year, he went from
being a relatively unknown starter for Catholic tobecome one of the most-coveted line prospects inthe Southeast.
“That’s a tribute to him. He’s worked incredi-bly hard,” Meadows said. “Once the film got outon Kyler, colleges just clamored for him.”Meadows spoke with Kerbyson on Aug. 13, the
same day as the big scrimmage, and noticed an immedi-ate change in the demeanor of his star lineman.
“We met for about 20 minutes and he seemed a lotmore relaxed than he has the last few months,” thecoach observed.
Meadows seems more at ease regarding his situationat quarterback than one might expect given a newstarter is slated to take the helm at that pivotal position.Mike Wegzyn moved to East Tennessee from Northville,Mich., in January. The 6-5, 210-pound senior finished outthe basketball season for Catholic, then took the fieldfor the Fighting Irish’s spring practice session andstaked his claim for the starting QB duty.
“Whenever we started going through drills, he wasalways first in line, encouraging people and pushing peo-ple from day one,” Meadows said. “I was very happyabout that, very pleasantly surprised.
“He’s got a tremendous arm. I think he’s the totalpackage, I really do,” Meadows added regarding his new

It’s not very common, at either the high-school or college level, for a pro-gram to have a four-year starting quarterback.Dave Meske, the head coach at Webb, has been fortunate enough to have
multiple quarterbacks talented and fortunate enough to enjoy such longtenures. Parker Wormsley will become the third when the 2010 season
begins. Wormsley, who’s committed to play baseball at The University of
Tennessee, returns for his final hitch on the Webb gridiron after throw-ing for 1,000-plus yards as a junior and leading the Spartans to the
Division II, Class A state championship.“He started as an eighth grader at shortstop, he
rotated in as a starter at basketball as a freshmanand he was starting quarterback as a freshman,”
Meske said of the 6-foot, 165-pound senior. “That tellsyou he’s a great athlete.
“He’s got a little bit of a swagger, which I think helpshim with his success. He’s confident, but he’s not over-confident. He’s not cocky, but at the same time, he
believes that he can do the job.”Wormsley certainly is the alpha of this Spartanssquad.
“He’s going to push everything forward. He’s goingto push me,” Meske said. “He’s that type of guy that’sgoing to come up to me and say, ‘Coach, what are wedoing here? Can we do this?’ He has that kind of con-
fidence in his ability to be a great quarterback.”Wormsley will be surrounded by plenty of familiar
faces in the Webb backfield. It can be crowded backthere at times, thanks to the wing-T scheme that theSpartans run.
Webb brings back its top three rushers from lastseason: Caleb Blance, Aaron Blance and
Bryan Berube. “They’re all about 5-foot-6, but they
can all fly. And they can all score,”Meske noted. “The best part of thewing-T is, all three of them are going
to get the football. You could havethree running backs rush for over 1,000yards.”
If that happens, chances are good thatthe Spartans will enjoy yet another success-
ful season. It just won’t make the schedule any easier.
As a private school, Webb plays against somefar-flung teams, when compared to the sched-ule of many public-school teams in theKnoxville area. Road trips to DavidsonChristian Academy and Mount Juliet

If the schedule maker for the 2010 University of Tennessee football teamhad a sense of humor, it had to be warped. The second game features PAC-10 favorite Oregon, which has even more
passing plays than gaudy neon lime uniforms. You also get to tackle all threepast national champions: Florida, LSU and Alabama. Just getting a win inOctober might be a step in the right direction. UT plays at LSU and Georgiabefore Alabama visits Neyland Stadium. The month concludes at SouthCarolina on Halloween Weekend.
Remember the black jerseys? South Carolina feels like it owes UT a blackeye.
Two things appear to be sure bets: UT football has become a work inprogress and this Tennessee team is going to have to grow up in a hurry.
Patience is the key word ... and it may be for a couple of years.Take a look at the check list:New head coach Derek Dooley was 17-20 at his previous stop,
Louisiana Tech. One media report said he was just 1-15 against teamswith winning records. At least he has shed the athletic director's role toconcentrate on the formidable task as UT's third head coach in as manyyears.
The offensive line does not have a player that started an SEC game. Whilethere is talent and the chance to have the best young line in America, there'svirtually no experience. If you look at the entire depth chart, the center posi-tion has to be the No. 1 concern.
It's no wonder that Dooley has mentioned open tryouts among the studentbody. Make no mistake: He isn't kidding if there's a pre-med major that canblock a Bama nose guard on fourth and 2.
UT's top two quarterbacks – juco transfer Matt Simms or true freshman TylerBray – have not taken a snap in a major college game. It takes time to adjust tothe speed of the game, progression of reads and schemes designed to confuseor bait young quarterbacks.
The top returning tailback – David Oku – rushed for 94 yards last season. Hefinished slightly ahead of the best returning tailback, Tauren Poole, whose lackof playing remains a mystery.
The most experienced players are tight end Luke Stocker, receivers GeraldJones and Denarius Moore and fullback Kevin Cooper.

"They're a little green on the offensive side of thatball -- that's for sure," said eternal optimist Bobby Scott, the former UT quarterback who appears on theEnrichment Sports Source on WATE on Sunday morn-ings at 11. "They're definitely a little green."
The Boston Celtics may have less green. The defense isn't exactly an elder statesman.Although middle linebacker Nick Reveiz is a team
leader, daily source of inspiration and senior captain, the former walk-on from Farragut is trying to overcomea non-contact knee injury that ended his 2009 seasonmidway through the fourth game.
"I am so thankful that I was able to get back out therefor the last two weeks of spring practice," Reveiz said. "Iwas trying to tackle Tauren Poole and he can cut assharply as anybody. I fell to the ground, but I got up andeverything was OK. It was like, `I can plant .. I can go.' Iwas so thankful."
Keeping the linebackers healthy will be cru-cial. Depth is a major concern at defen-sive tackle. Talent is plentiful at defen-sive end. Although Janzen Jacksonreturns at safety, the Vols must find areplacement for All-Everything EricBerry – the new $60 Million Man whowas the fifth selection of the 2009 NFLDraft by the Chiefs. There are also con-cerns about both cornerback positions.
With inexperience so plentiful at somany positions, the kicking game needsan old – fashioned Tennessee revival. The return game has been productive, but might be guilty by association. The'09 Vols were just awful in field goalprotection, field goal accuracy, depthof kickoffs and coverage overall.
As one former player said, "Lipservice just isn't getting it done inthe kicking game. We have to do
more than talk about it."Otherwise, the scales of football justice could behopelessly tipped against UT. Backup linebackerShane Reveiz has excelled on special teams. Theformer Farragut standout caused a fumble againstMemphis that led to a UT touchdown last season.
Also on the roster from West Knoxville are NickBranum (DB, Catholic); Chris Cates (WR, ChristianAcademy); Geoff Courtney (WR, Farragut); CoryEichholtz (WR, Bearden); Mike Fromke (QB,Christian Academy); Nick Guess (Deep Snapper,Farragut); and Daniel Hood (OT, Catholic).
The Cavalaris Line: Going into the Sept. 4 open-er against the UT Martin Skyhawks, it's difficultto envision UT finishing better than 6-6. The keygame could be Oregon at home. It gives you achance to go 3-1 in September and the Vols aregoing to need all the equity they can get builtbefore the stretch run.

22C • FARRAGUTPRESS THURSDAY, AUGUST 19, 2010 THE PROGRAM
on the 2010 docket.“We’ve created some rivalries there. Do I
enjoy traveling all the time? No. Butit’s something that when you’re in
Division II and in Knoxville, you’re going to have to do,”Meske said.
Jay Warner, the incumbentcenter, returns as the anchor ofthe Spartans’ offensive line.Tyler Harrison started at guardlast year but got hurt in thespring and won’t be available
until the second or third gameof the new season.
Meanwhile, Meske figures he’ll rotate Brewer Congleton,Jackson Greaves, Hunter Little and Chance Harrison atthe two guard spots. Dakota Jenkins and Patrick Daley, apair of 16-year-old seniors, will be the offensive tackles.
There are more questions on the defensive side of theball. The secondary will be comprised of two freshmen andtwo sophomores, and all three starting linebackers—Congleton, Jim Dolinack and Harrison – will be new to thefirst-team lineup. Caleb Blance also could play at line-backer, if needed.
Watch out for senior Kelly Thomas, a defensive end whoMeske dubs the most improved player on the team.
The Final Verdict: Webb’s junior varsity team went unde-feated last season, which should provide the Spartans withsome solid depth this season in spite of the holes ondefense and the offensive line. With the wealth of return-ing talent at the skill positions, Webb once again has itssights set squarely on competing for a state championship.

quarterback. “He’s got the ‘it’ factor.”Wegzyn is more of a classic pro-style quarterback, but can run if necessary. Joey Gaston is also an incumbent on the offensive line. Patrick Haun should be
Catholic’s top receiver and Meadows expects him to have a big year.Kerbyson and Gaston are two of only four players who are beginning the 2010 sea-
son as two-way starters. The others are Alex Saah and Michael Bonfini. Dominic DiGiovanni should be the keystone of Catholic’s linebacking corps in the
4-4 defense run by the Fighting Irish.Don’t overlook Catholic’s kicking game, either. Spencer Roth is rated as one of the
top punters available in the country. Kansas already has offered him a scholarship, and schools like Florida and USC also have shown interest.
The Final Verdict: Assuming Kennedy and Coulter can help fill the void left afterShirley’s injury, and Wegzyn lives up to his coach’s lofty expectations, the FightingIrish should be in store for a bounce-back season. Catholic went 6-6 in 2009, anuncharacteristic performance for a team that moved up in classification last yearafter winning a state title the prior season.

“It’s a tough task going out and playing good teams. A lot of state champions comethrough here.”
That said, Jones is looking for more focus out of his team from the opening kick-off. Too many times, the coach noted, the Hawks would fall behind by a consider-able amount in the first quarter.
“We can’t decide to start playing until the second quarter,” he said.Meanwhile, the challenge to build depth continues—not just for this season, but
for the coming years.Hardin Valley does have a youth football league, established two years ago, as a
feeder system. In time, that will start bearing fruit. The Final Verdict: The plethora of players who received substantial experience
last season should be older, wiser and stronger in 2010. Still, as a program in onlyits second year of existence, Hardin Valley will have a tough time competingagainst some of the strong teams they’ll face in conference play. It’s too soon toexpect the Hawks to be a significant force in the dog-eat-dog world of Knoxvillefootball.
