ACTS 1:8 OPPORTUNITIES

FROM THE PASTOR

As the Fall approaches, we begin to settle back into a “routine” at home and at church. The children are back in school, vacations are a distant memory, and (hopefully) cooler weather is on the way! The church schedule is also returning to nor-malcy. Normalcy, though, does not mean mundane! I am excited about some upgrades in our effort to disciple our people – young and old. Beginning October 1, our Sunday night schedule will transition from a single option for adults to multiple opportunities to experience a deeper walk with Christ. You will be able to choose to take part in one of four eight-week studies. The Women’s Study and the Men’s Study will continue from the Summer. These groups provide strength, support, and sustenance in your faith walk. John Long will be leading a study entitled “Ordinary – How to Turn the World Upside Down”. I will focus on God’s plan for revival and spiritual awakening through Henry Blackaby’s book, “Fresh Encounter”. Each of these groups will convene from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sundays. During the month of September, each Sunday evening (except September 3) the church will gather in the Chapel at 5:30 p.m. for a time of reflection, prayer, study, and sharing. All Summer, we have been asking, “Who are we, and where are we going?” We can either exist or we can thrive! First Baptist Church has been given an assignment, let us carry it out! Be sure to read Jonathan’s words concerning the “Pray 4 Me” campaign. As we seek to develop a culture of prayer in the church, this will be an important step in drawing all generations to pray with, and for, one another. Too often, I fail to share with you my appreciation for those who serve on our Staff. These men and women prayerfully and faithfully serve the Lord, and you, in multiple capacities. My love for each of them is deep. Continue to pray for Mike Couch, Alan Schantz, Jonathan Raffini, Justin Green, Beth Spence, Lynda Schantz, Tiana Hergert, and Tracy Boeker. And, as you have opportunity, let them know you love them as well!

MARY HILL DAVIS OFFERING FOR TEXAS MISSIONS. September is the month designated to give to mission work throughout Texas. To see the full allocations list of where this offering goes, visit http://wmutx.org/mary-hill-davis/where-does-the-money-go. Our church goal is $7,000.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES. Thank you for your generous giving

towards school supplies as we reach families in Big Spring. During the Mission Center’s August distribution we gave out about 75 bags of school supplies. Over 120 Howard students will also receive a bag of supplies in the coming weeks.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD. Volunteers are needed to wrap shoeboxes with Christmas paper for Operation Christmas Child. If you are willing, see Sherry Lindsey.

We hope to prepare more than 500 shoeboxes this year. Each box represents not only a child around the world who will hear the Gospel, but through this small act, their family will also see the love of Jesus.

REMINDER: This year NO toothpaste or candy will be allowed in shoeboxes!

Renovations

We have finished redoing the floors in the Children’s Hallway. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should come take a look. This project has created a cleaner and safer place for our children. It is great to be a part of a church that places such value on children and their families!

Here comes Fall

Kids Connection on Sunday Nights kicked off August 27th. We will take off Sept. 3rd for Labor Day and resume Sept. 10th. This is a great combination of the the Children’s Ministry and our Music Minister, Alan Schantz, working together to create an awesome program. We will lead kids through practical application of biblical principles as well as teach them how to worship themselves while also leading others. Look to Alan for dates for when these kids will be incorporated in special services.

Real Lyf, our Wednesday Night program kicked-off on August 30th. This program is sure to be a blast. We do a brief Bible study for the different age groups that is relevant to things they face everyday. After that, we have organized games and activities. This is a great program to invite friends to as well as an awesome way to have Christ-centered fun at church.

Upward Basketball

Upward Basketball is a Christ-centered program that focusses on the fundamentals of the sport. Children in this league learn about sportsmanship, integrity and teamwork. This awesome ministry to our community has been very successful. I am excited to continue to foster the relationship this program creates with our local Big Spring, Coahoma, and Forsan schools. By working alongside our local schools, we are planning to have more than 300 children involved in Upward Basketball this year. Online and paper registration begins September 5th.

Check out our church website, www.fbcbigspring.org, for evaluation information if you are interested in coaching, refereeing, or having your child play. We have handouts coming home through the schools that will also contain evaluation dates. Evaluations will begin October 5th. Be on the lookout for more information.

For our church family, this means that we will again have the opportunity to sponsor families through the Upward season. I will be distributing information in the coming weeks on how you can be involved through prayer and fellowship.

FALL FESTIVAL

It seems like October is still some ways off, but in fact it is next month. I am not sure where this year has gone, but it has been a great one so far! One of the biggest events the Children’s Ministry puts on is the Fall Festival. As we start to prepare for a great time of games and fun, some needs have arisen. We are going to start collecting candy for the Fall Festival this month.

YOUTH NEWS

Highlights of the September Youth Calendar

Sept 3: Evening: Youth Will Not Meet

Sept 10: Evening: Youth at my house Scholarship Tracking begins

Sept 17: Prayformecampaign Launch Luncheon Evening: Youth at my house

Sept 24: Evening: Youth at my house

Sept 27: See You/Saw You at the Pole

As this school year is now fully underway, we have lots of great stuff coming up in Youth Ministry. First, signup is now underway for Summer 2018 Youth Camp. All the details can be found on the Youth Page of fbcbigspring.org Scholarship tracking begins on Sunday Sept 10th. Contact Jonathan with any questions. Second, as you have seen during worship, we are getting ready to begin a church wide emphasis on prayer for students. We are presently signing up students and prayer partners. The idea behind that is to have each student partnered with 3 adults from different generations in our church that will pray for them daily. Students are presently signing up and we need TONS of adults of all ages as we want each student to have 3 adults praying for them every day. Details can be found on prayformecampaign.com On Sunday September 17th, we will have a kickoff luncheon for the entire church. I will explain the program and we will partner students and adults that day. But we are asking students and adults to sign up now! Pastor Mark will also be supporting this with a sermon series on prayer beginning September 10th.

Also, beginning Sunday October 1st, our entire church will be experiencing exciting enhancements to our Sunday night programming. We will launch 4-5 discipleship course options on that night. The year has been divided into 3 blocks of appx. 7 weeks, 1 in the fall ending around Thanksgiving, and 2, 7 week blocks between January and May. In each of the 3 blocks different courses will be offered to help each of us grow in our walk with Jesus. This fall, there are two that will be great for students, Ordinary will be led by John Long. This class will teach you the biblical model for living your everyday life to the fullest for Jesus. The other class will be taught by Pastor Mark. Sept 10 and Sept 10,17, 24, youth will meet at my house as we have in the past, and on October 1, we will begin these new options. Starting in January, there will be classes just for youth on Sunday night as well as a class specifically for parents. I pray that you will consider being involved in these in order for you to continue growing in your faith.

MARK YOUR 2018 CALENDAR

Also, I am pleased to announce 2 big dates for the 2018 year. The first is our annual DNOW weekend. This year's will be February 9-11th again in cooperation with FBC Stanton. We'll start signing up for that around Thanksgiving, with early signups receiving a discounted rate.

The 2nd big event is Youth Camp 2018. We will once again attend Fuge Camp at Glorieta, NM. The dates for that are June 27—July 1. The total cost of camp will be $300 and we will once again be offering scholarship opportunities through church attendance, fundraiser luncheons, as well as serving in our Upward Basketball league. Parents, you should have received a letter outlining all of that information. Go ahead and put those dates on your calendar NOW!!
