Review of Related Literature

This chapter exhibits the related literature review that would

aid the researchers to proceed in accordance with the present study.

According to

http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/usmc/leadership_traits.html, the

14 leadership traits are qualities of thought and action which, if

demonstrated in daily activities, help Marines earn the respect,

confidence, and loyal cooperation of other Marines. It is extremely

important that you understand the meaning of each leadership trait and

how to develop it, so you know what goals to set as you work to become

a good leader and a good follower.

An important characteristic of leadership is using human talents to

grow performance, trust and integrity in employees and the

organization (Daft, 2005). One’s personality plays a major role in

Page 8: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 8

the way they lead. Personality is a combination of traits

(distinguishing personal characteristics) that classifies an

individual’s behavior. Personality affects conduct as well as insight

and attitudes. Knowing personalities helps explain and forecast

others’ behavior and job performance (Lussier & Achua, 2004). The Big

Five Model of Personality assesses whether a person is stronger in

surgency, agreeableness, adjustment, conscientiousness, or openness to

experience.

First is Justice, it is defined as the practice of being fair and

consistent. A just person gives consideration to each side of a

situation and bases rewards or punishments on merit. Be honest with

yourself about why you make a particular decision. Avoid favoritism.

Try to be fair at all times and treat all things and people in an

equal manner. Next is Judgment, it is your ability to think about

things clearly, calmly, and in an orderly fashion so that you can make

good decisions. You can improve your judgment if you avoid making rash

decisions. Approach problems with a common sense attitude.

Dependability means that you can be relied upon to perform your duties

properly. It means that you can be trusted to complete a job. It is

the willing and voluntary support of the policies and orders of the

chain of command. Dependability also means consistently putting forth

Page 9: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 9

your best effort in an attempt to achieve the highest standards of

performance. You can increase your dependability by forming the habit

of being where you're supposed to be on time, by not making excuses

and by carrying out every task to the best of your ability regardless

of whether you like it or agree with it. Initiative is taking action

even though you haven't been given orders. It means meeting new and

unexpected situations with prompt action. It includes using

resourcefulness to get something done without the normal material or

methods being available to yourself. To improve your initiative, work

on staying mentally and physically alert. Be aware of things that need

to be done and then to do them without having to be told. Decisiveness

means that you are able to make good decisions without delay. Get all

the facts and weight them against each other. By acting calmly and

quickly, you should arrive at a sound decision. You announce your

decisions in a clear, firm, professional manner. Practice being

positive in your actions instead of acting half-heartedly or changing

your mind on an issue. Tact means that you can deal with people in a

manner that will maintain good relations and avoid problems. It means

that you are polite, calm, and firm. Begin to develop your tact by

trying to be courteous and cheerful at all times. Treat others as you

would like to be treated. Integrity means that you are honest and

truthful in what you say or do. You put honesty, sense of duty, and

Page 10: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 10

sound moral principles above all else. Be absolutely honest and

truthful at all times. Stand up for what you believe to be right.

Enthusiasm is defined as a sincere interest and exuberance in the

performance of your duties. If you are enthusiastic, you are

optimistic, cheerful, and willing to accept the challenges.

Understanding and belief in your mission will add to your enthusiasm

for your job. Try to understand why even uninteresting jobs must be

done. Bearing is the way you conduct and carry you. Your manner should

reflect alertness, competence, confidence, and control. To develop

bearing, you should hold yourself to the highest standards of personal

conduct. Never be content with meeting only the minimum requirements.

Unselfishness means that you avoid making yourself comfortable at the

expense of others. Be considerate of others. Give credit to those who

deserve it. Avoid using your position or rank for personal gain,

safety, or pleasure at the expensive of others. Be considerate of

others. Courage is what allows you to remain calm while recognizing

fear. Moral courage means having the inner strength to stand up for

what is right and to accept blame when something is your fault.

Physical courage means that you can continue to function effectively

when there is physical danger present. You can begin to control fear

by practicing self-discipline and calmness. If you fear doing certain

things required in your daily life, force yourself to do them until

Page 11: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 11

you can control your reaction. Knowledge is the understanding of a

science or art. Knowledge means that you have acquired information and

that you understand people. Your knowledge should be broad, and in

addition to knowing your job, you should know your unit's policies and

keep up with current events. Increase your knowledge by remaining

alert. Listen, observe, and find out about things you don't

understand. Study field manuals and other military literature. Loyalty

means that you are devoted to your country, the Corps, and to your

seniors, peers, and subordinates. The motto of our Corps is Semper

Fidelis!, (Always Faithful). You owe unwavering loyalty up and down

the chain of command, to seniors, subordinates, and peers. To improve

your loyalty you should show your loyalty by never discussing the

problems of the Marine Corps or your unit with outsiders. Never talk

about seniors unfavorably in front of your subordinates. Once a

decision is made and the order is given to execute it, carry out that

order willingly as if it were your own. Endurance is the mental and

physical stamina that is measured by your ability to withstand pain,

fatigue, stress, and hardship. For example, enduring pain during a

conditioning march in order to improve stamina is crucial in the

development of leadership. Develop your endurance by engaging in

physical training that will strengthen your body. Finish every task to

Page 12: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 12

the best of your ability by forcing yourself to continue when you are

physically tired and your mind is sluggish

An effective leader attempts to bring about great changes. These

changes are not without risks. Facing changes and challenges, as we

get older is a part of life. How we deal with changes and challenges

reflects on who we are and how we will grow as a leader.

A strong leader is very creative. They will try new approaches even

if it presents possible failure. Effective leaders recognize that

failure is only temporary and that this setback gives a clearer

understanding of what not to do in the future. The overall attitude

of a risk-taking leader is that, “You ultimately fail when you don’t

give it a try!”

Helen Keller was born in 1882. She became ill as a young child and

was struck blind, deaf and mute. In 1887, Keller had a teacher named

Anne Sullivan who helped her make tremendous progress in her ability

to communicate. As she grew up under Sullivan’s coaching she went on

to college, graduating in 1904. One of Keller’s famous quotes showed

her as a risk-taker. She said, “Life is either a daring adventure or

nothing at all.”

Page 13: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 13

An Effective Leader has Self-control, Strong leaders know that their

ability to stay calm, even in the worst of conflicts, is a character

trait that must be nurtured and grown. The effective leader’s mantra

is, “When you lose your temper, you lose.” Stephen Covey pointed out

that there is a well-defined character of those who express self-

control. He said, “You have to decide what your highest priorities

are and have the courage – pleasantly, smilingly, non-apologetically –

to say ‘no’ to other things. And the way to do that is by having a

bigger ‘yes’ burning inside. The enemy of the ‘best’ is often the

‘good.” Self-control will determine what is most important.

An Effective Leader is a Caring Individual, Strong leadership can

never take place if those we lead think we do not care. Leaders

should show a caring attitude about the mission of their organization

however; their concern for each individual team member must take

priority over everything else.

When a leader cares about those they lead they show behavior that is

consistently acknowledging others. A leader who cares is also one who

maintains eye contact during a conversation. This type of leader asks

many questions and listens more than they talk. A caring leader

desires the feedback and opinions of those they lead.

Page 14: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 14

Due to the caring nature of this type of leader they regularly

compliment people in public and private settings. This type of leader

also expresses genuine interest in the lives of those they lead.

An Effective Leader is Modest, Self-evaluation is a strong

characteristic of an effective leader. A good leader does not have a

problem in being evaluated or receiving criticism. No one enjoys

being corrected but an effective leader sees it for what it is: an

opportunity for personal growth.

An Effective Leader is Resolute, a strong leader must make wise

decisions. They must also be willing to listen to wise counsel. A

strong leader is determined and admirably purposeful. There is a

strong character of unwavering determination.

The word resolute describes a characteristic of firmness and

determination. This type of person is clear especially in purpose and

belief. A resolute leader can also be characterized by quickness.

An Effective Leader is Motivational, a motivational leader enjoys

their task. They are optimistic about their purpose. Change requires

taking risks, personal growth and challenges. A motivational leader

does not back down from a challenge but is willing to lead the way as

an inspirational leader.

Page 15: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 15

An Effective Leader is a Clear Communicator, it is important to

understand that communication is not solely conversation. A good

communicator aims to make sure that their message is understood. The

skill of communication is grown upon the skill of listening.

Listening is as important as talking and an effective leader listens

more than they talk.

An Effective Leader is a Visionary, a leader must be a dreamer. A

productive leader is someone who can see into the future. The

challenge for every visionary leader is not to get so far ahead of the

team in what they see that they leave them behind, lost, wandering

about the future direction. A visionary is a dreamer but they are

also a strong communicator of their dream. Effective leadership has

certain, basic, visionary, characteristics. The aim of a strong leader

is to translate their “vision” into reality. An Effective Leader has a

Sense of Humor, good leaders take their work seriously however, they

do not mind laughing at themselves. A healthy leader does not have a

problem in finding humor in their mistakes or blunders. A productive

leader knows that laughter is good for the soul. A humorous person

can lead a team even through the most challenging times. Dwight D.

Eisenhower said, “A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership,

of getting along with people, of getting things done.” William Arthur

Page 16: The Problem and Its Background

Grp.4 16

Ward put it this way, “A well-developed sense of humor is the pole

that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life.” An

Effective Leader is Ethical, a strong leader has a strong moral base.

There is no question about their character. What you see is what you

get. There is nothing more defeatist than a dishonest or lying

leader. A strong leader has strong convictions. Ethical living and

leadership will take courage and conviction. It means doing the right

thing, even when the right thing isn’t popular or easy to accomplish.

When a leader makes decisions based on core values, then it makes a

clear statement that they cannot be bought. The effective ethical

leader leads by example. An Effective Leader is Dedicated to the

“Cause”, being an effective leader is not easy but it is necessary for

the success of any organization or team. Dedication is key. Being

able to convey commitment to a clear purpose and cause is essential.

The strong leader will communicate the “cause” as often as possible.
