Go and Be Reconciled! To reconcile is to become friends again. We need reconciliation when we find ourselves out of sorts with a brother or sister in Christ (or any other human being). This is a common need. In our human brokenness we often do things that offend, upset, or harm others. In Christ we recognize that these broken relationships need attention. At Prince of Peace we had a troubling incidence of this need in the events before and after Pr. Carl’s resignation. Members were upset with one another; harsh words were spoken; accusations and rumors flew; disruptions in relationships ensued; the atmosphere felt stormy. Much of that has gone away over the last few months. But many relationships have not become friendships again. Some feel alienated from others. Things are quieter but there is always a danger that we have covered the sore with a Band-Aid rather than bringing deep healing. So I’m proposing two things to afford opportunities for reconciliation to all of us. 1) Town Hall meetings (Sat., Feb. 17, Sun., Feb. 18 and Wed., Feb. 21.) to hear about the process that two of our members used to be reconciled to one another; and 2) a Lenten focus on Reconciliation in our midweek services and on weekends. Please read further in the Communicator about each of these opportunities and plan to participate. Let’s follow Jesus by developing good habits of reconciling our relationships when that human need so often arises. An Interesting Intersection : One of the challenging things about Lent and Easter in 2018 is that the dates of the events coincide with two secular dates of some importance. This year Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Our church calendar day of penitence and ashes occurs at the same time greetings and gifts of romantic love are being shared. That feels somewhat strange. But check out what that means for Easter. It falls on April 1, April Fool’s Day, a day the secular calendar gives over to playfulness and trickery. But then remember Paul’s declaration that we are “fools for Christ” and consider how Jesus’ resurrection is considered foolish by many. Is there any way that we can use these unusual connections in our witness for Jesus? Scripture makes it plain that we are to ask God to show us where He is leading us, and follow His lead. He will bless those who trust and follow Him. He knows the plans He has for us, and they are good, and His promises are true. Praying As One provides a weekly prayer focus with accompanying scripture.

February 4, 2018John 13:26: Truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.Pray for: Missionaries, teachers, and Pastors and vicars, parents; Those who share the Gospel through word and deed. Prayer: Father, help me to share the gospel.

February 11, 2018Ephesians 4:11-12: And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and the teachers to equip the saints for the work of the ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we attain the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God to mature manhood…Pray for: Awareness of the significance of the transfiguration, Humility for preparation of the season of Lent; Unity of the Prince of Peace Congregation and the Christian Church everywhere.Prayer: Father, you have given us the greatest gifts of all, the gift of your Son and the gift of eternal life. Help us to be aware of the cost of that gift and to, respond to that by following your word, your instructions and your encouragement. Help us also to do your will, to deliver us from evil. Thank you for providing for us, for the forgiveness you give each of us. Amen

February 18, 2018Ephesians 5:8-9...Walk as children of the light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and true).Pray for: Womens Retreat- that those who attend are showered with the Holy Spirit and hear His voice. For Children, those aging, those who spend their days working, both at home and in the workplace. For each of us as we go through

the day, that we will find opportunities to share your love and be a light to others.Prayer: Father, let each of us be a light that reflects the love that you give us and bringing your peace, truth and kindness to others. Amen

February 25, 2018 1 Corinthians 4:1-2: And this is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.Pray for: Teachers, Kitchen Helpers, Missionaries, Musicians, and Care Givers and all others who serve our great God. Prayer: Father, help us to be servants in your name, to bring your love to others using both the talents and opportunities that you give us. Help us to be faithful daily in service to You by providing service to others, and in so doing, to spread your love to those around us and throughout the world. Amen

ANSWERED PRAYER: Sharing the ways in which God is alive and moving in your life is an integral component in living out your faith and encouraging others! *I lost my ID card and metro card Thursday morning and found them Thursday evening. Surely the Lord was at work. *The blessing of a safe trip to the Holy Land for 38 people. *Due to unseen changes in my contract at work, I was at risk of losing my job by the middle of January 2018 if I couldn’t find another project to support. Last week, I found out my current contract had been extended. Praise be to God!

Be Reconciled During LentThe primary act of reconciling was God’s when he provided Jesus as the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world. And since one of the important pieces of reconciliation is recognizing and confessing our own part in the issue, the penitential season of six weeks before Easter fits that task well. You’ll be seeing a couple of banners in the hallways that portray the three vertical actions of reconciling and the three horizontal ones. And then in midweek Lenten services and on following Sundays we’ll focus on each of those steps and seek to better understand and practice them. So plan to attend the six special services at noon or 7:30pm on Wednesdays from Feb. 14 through Mar. 21 and the Sundays after them. Reconciliation insights and practical ways to implement them will be featured.

Narthex Renovation UpdateDemolition has begun in the narthex with the removal of the ceiling and a portion of the wall in Room 21. The demolition and framing permits are in, and the final meeting with county officials took place the week of January 22. In the next few weeks the installation of the new ductwork will take place. Decisions are being made on furniture, wall color, and light fixtures, and the new sound system for the narthex has been approved and a contractor selected. As discussed in earlier town hall meetings, there will be a memorial art feature on the new diagonal wall near the main office door. A committee has been formed to discuss design options. Funding for this project was not included in the agreed-upon budget for the overall renovation. The Renovation Committee still feels that the narthex will be complete before Easter as planned. We will keep the congregation informed of the renovation status through monthly Communicator articles and short weekly updates. Brian Corman

GO!Go! Monthly ProjectsEach month we highlight our church’s GO!

Project and ask our members to pray for our GO! Missionary of the Month. Check

out the GO! Board by Room 26 for additional information and local

volunteer opportunities.

February/MarchGO! Project:

GO! World Missions - Supporting Southeastern District Global Missionaries

Goal: 40 POP families to adopt an SED missionary Visit the GO! Board (outside Room 26) and read about all the AMAZING work SED missionaries are doing in the world! Prayerfully consider partnering with one of these missionaries and then complete an “ADOPTION” agreement. On March 25, families will have the opportunity to personally give their adoption agreement to Dr. Brent Smith, Director of Mission Central (see above). If you’re family is unable to attend worship that weekend, please deliver your adoption agreement to the church office and David Mahen, POP Lay Leader of the Care and Outreach Leadership Team, will present it to Brent. SAVE THE DATE! On Palm Sunday weekend, March 25, Dr. Brent Smith will be our guest preacher! Brent and Jennie and their family were members at POP before moving to Nebraska this past summer. Mission Central is the largest mission supporting agency in the LCMS World Mission global Gospel outreach. Mission Central helps to raise millions of dollars every year to send and keep LCMS World Mission Missionaries in the field. Mission

Central helps connect you, the people, to the direct support of missionaries. 100% of any financial gift you give will go directly to the missionary you support! Brent will be reporting on missionaries from the SED district who we have been praying for these past several months. It is our hope that we can give Brent 40 missionary adoption agreements when he visits! Let’s GO! Go Church! Go Local! Go World!

February Go Missionary of the Month: Rev James and Angela Sharp and FamilyEach month we pray for a missionary who considers the Southeastern District their home. This month we are praying for James and Angela Sharp and their four children, Elias 8, Ambrose 4, Callida 5, and Magdalyn 3. The

Sharp family is currently serving as missionaries abroad in Uruguay, South America. The Sharp family has strong ties to the SED where both James and Angela taught in Lutheran Schools and served congregations in the Baltimore, Maryland area. God has called this young family to be part of HIS mission in South America. They work with several churches in that region and are also leading a wonderful school. God is using this family in a special way to bring Jesus to so many people living in total darkness. If you would like to support the Sharp family financially, please contact Mission Central at 712-882-1029 or online at http://i.b5z.net/i/u/1461075/f/SHARP_AGREEMENT1.pdf or visit the Go! Board and pick up an adoption agreement.

Looking for ways to get connected locally and volunteer in the community? For ideas, please email Minister of Care and Outreach DCE [email protected].

Attend a Town Hall Meeting on ReconciliationSaturday, February 17, after the evening worship serviceSunday, February 18, between morning servicesWednesday, February 21 after Lenten evening worship Three occasions will be provided for members and friends to hear a report from Jason Faunce and Patrick Maloney, who had opposing views of Pr Carl’s resignation, and have used a process to reconcile their differences. At each Town Hall Meeting you will have an opportunity to hear what Jason and Patrick learned as they went through the process, suggested by Vacancy Pastor Gary after he received their agreement to work on the issues between them. Come to one of these sessions and learn how they worked through their differing understandings and postures on the difficulties. Perhaps that will assist you in dealing with your own feelings and dismay over the events of the last year. Pastor Gary will also use the Town Halls to offer some additional ways for members and friends to continue to work on the issues. If none of these three sessions work for you, please let Pastor Gary know so that additional opportunities to hear the process might be arranged.

Lent WithoutAlongside penitence the Lenten season is known for fasting, for giving up something (or doing something not normally done). This year the renovation of the narthex and use of the fellowship hall for worship makes it difficult to have the suppers before the evening Lenten worship.

So this year Prince of Peace will not have dinners on Wednesday evenings. Let the absence be a reminder to all of us to try out a spiritual practice in the six weeks of preparation for Easter.

Faith Shapers: On Tuesday, February 13, we will discuss The Way of the Dragon or the Way of the Lamb: Searching for Jesus’ Path of Power in a Church that Has Abandoned It by Jamin Goggen and Kyle Strobel. This book paints Biblical vision of power through weakness. The authors seek out great sages of the faith with uncommon wisdom to offer those traveling the path of Christian life (J. I. Packer, Dallas Willard, Marva Dawn, John Perkins, Jean Vanier, James Houston, and Eugene Peterson) and begin to piece together the new-old reality of following Jesus today. Looking ahead, on Tuesday, March 13, we will discuss The Echo Within: Finding Your True Calling by Robert Benson.

Faith Shapers meets at the home of Chris Hohenstein, 9109 Octavia Ct., Springfield, VA 22153.

Giving with a Joyful Heart:Pastor Caleb, who leads the Ugandan Fellowship on Sunday afternoon, asked for an appointment a couple of weeks ago. When he came to the office, he said that he and his congregation (about 15 people) had been looking at the drawings of the narthex renovation and wanted to participate. He presented POP with a check for $1,000 that will be used to help purchase screens used to display information to members and guests. I wish each of you could have been here to see the joy on Pastor Caleb’s face as he presented the check to us. Giving with a joyful heart. What a blessing!

EMPTY BOWLS - April 22, 5:00-8:00pmWhat is the Empty Bowls Project©?

The Empty Bowls Project© is an international project to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations on a community level. The Empty Bowls Project© supports food related charities around the world and has raised millions of dollars to aid in the fight against hunger. “Empty Bowls” allows participating artists and groups to create and donate bowls, then serve a simple meal. One hundred percent of each meal’s proceeds are devoted to local hunger-fighting organizations, such as Ecumenical Community Helping Others (ECHO), here in Springfield. ECHO is our community aid organization for those living in the Springfield and Burke communities of Fairfax County. This summer POP member Melinda Reidy, a local artisan, opened her pottery studio and members in our community made 200 bowls. It is our goal to sell these bowls at Prince of Peace’s EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT© and donate 100% of the projected $7,000 directly to ECHO. With your donation you will choose a beautiful, handmade bowl to keep, enjoy a delicious meal donated by local businesses, and help fight hunger in our community. Cost: 13 & Older: $35; 12 & Under, Bring a Food Donation (5 cans). Register today at http://www.poplc.org/event/2018-04-22-empty-bowls-event/

Thank You: The Prince of Peace staff is blessed to serve in the way we do to further the Kingdom of our Lord and we would like to give thanks to God for the congregation and the special gifts given towards the staff Christmas gift. We pray Prince of Peace will continue to be the special place it is, full of the people that are Christ’s own and the love that is evident. So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, Will give You thanks forever, We will show forth Your praise to all generations. ~Psalm 79:13
