The President’s Corner
Welcome: Members, Friends and Honored Guests;
Tonight we celebrate the 248th anniversary of the founding of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick. We take time this evening to celebrate and honor the character, courage and determination of spirit of those who emigrated from Ireland to the United States.
The Irish have made meaningful contributions to our country, and advancements the likes of which have echoed through our history and helped shape American culture, science and industry over the last three centuries. America offered us the promise of a better future, one that provided freedom, work and opportunity, when there was little to be found at home. The same year our organization was founded in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin was touring Ireland to gauge support for the Colonies. In a letter to his friend Thomas Cushing in 1771, Franklin wrote:
“Ireland is strongly in favor of the American cause. They have reason to sympathise with us.”
Bound by a common yearning for freedom, as well as a common foe, countless Irish embarked on the hazardous journey to America. With no guarantees, only a tireless work ethic and unrelenting spirit, these early immigrants and generations to follow pursued and eventually realized the American Dream.
Since our founding in 1771, the Society’s mission has changed considerably and has adapted to the present times. The throngs of immigrant masses are no longer there to aid. Ireland itself has grown and developed into a thriving Nation.
Today, the population of Irish-born Americans is aging and with the passage of time we run the risk of losing our identity and connection with our ancestry. We here at the Friendly Sons share and hold dear our heritage with Ireland. The Society is evolving – by revering our heritage and reestablishing and strengthening our relationship with the Emerald Isle. By promoting Irish culture and Irish-American culture, we’ve found new purpose -- celebrating music, literature, and a remarkable history both at home and abroad.
Our scholarship programs, the new cornerstone of our charitable initiative, provide opportunities for students to forge new connections, create new experiences, and witness, fist-hand, the natural beauty of Ireland and the quick wit and hospitality of its people. These study-abroad programs allow the next generation to discover their heritage in real time.
Our reach also goes far beyond our scholarship programs. We gladly support many Philadelphia-area Irish-American organizations who also share in and contribute to our beliefs and endeavors, such as the Commodore Barry Arts & Culture Center, the Philadelphia Ceili Group, the Irish Immigration Center of Philadelphia and the Duffy’s Cut Project, just to name a few.
We hope that you enjoy yourselves this evening and, if you have not yet, will consider supporting our organization and this important work within our community.

The Parting Glass
Of all the money that e’er I spent... I’ve spent it in good company. And all the harm that ever I did... alas it was to none but me.
And all I’ve done for want of wit... to memory now I can’t recall. So fill to me the parting glass... good night and joy be with you all.
If I had money enough to spend... and leisure to sit awhile. There is a fair maid in the town... that sorely has my heart beguiled.
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips... I own she has my heart enthralled. So fill to me the parting glass... good night and joy be with you all.
Oh, all the comrades that e’er I had... they’re sorry for my going away. And all the sweethearts that e’er I had... they’d wish me one more day to stay.
But since it falls unto my lot... that I should rise and you should not.I’ll gently rise and softly call... good night and joy be with you all.

SECRETARY’S ANNUAL REPORTTO FSSP MEMBERSHIP
MARCH 9, 2019On March 10th, 2018, the gavel was passed
to a new Board with the Society in its healthiest position in many years. Under the administration of the previous Board, The Society found a renewed vision for liberty and charity. The leadership under Past President Joseph P. Heenan has positioned this Society for success for years to come. The current administration looks to its predecessors with gratitude and respect for their accomplishments, and remain committed to continuing and furthering these goals under the leadership of current President Kevin Maloney.
Benevolence remains a pillar of the Society. With continued funding of scholarship endowments at local colleges and universities, we grow the legacy and lasting impact of our Society by enabling students to study and experience Ireland’s rich history, culture, and landscape. Our endowments are currently approaching $1.1 million dollars, and 20 students have benefitted from these scholarships in the past year alone. The impact of these funds does not stop at a collegiate level; we also have a separate endowment at Camphill Special Schools for children in need. The Society is proud to support other worthy charitable organizations and causes such as The Little Sisters of the Poor, Mercy Hospice, Saint Jude Hospice, Duffy’s Cut Project, and countless others. In 2019, the Board has budgeted $95,000 in benevolence funding. Under a policy established by the previous board, we remain committed to distributing 100% of our annual donations to worthy causes.
Our annual appeal is critical to fulfilling the Society’s mission. In 2018, our appeal raised $272,675. We thank each and every one of our supporters for your generosity, and hope your support will continue throughout 2019.
As our mission expands, our Society continues to grow. Membership is on the rise, with 82 new members joining us in the past year. Our quarterly
meetings attract new and existing members alike, and attendance has never been better. We’ve enjoyed a variety of guest speakers, entertainment, and great camaraderie amongst members.
With our growth comes a new image for the Society. We have revamped our website for a more modern and user-friendly experience, allowing visitors to learn more about our Society and to more easily become a member, register for meetings, and donate to our causes. Our promotional video has been viewed over 5,000 times from all parts of the country. Our many historical records will be digitized and made available through Villanova’s Falvey Library. We are proud that The Philadelphia Friendly Sons act as a model of excellence for other Irish charitable organizations.
Since 2016, our annual Gala has significantly contributed to our fundraising efforts. Our guests of honor have included prominent national and international figures. This year we are excited to welcome Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway, President of Citizen’s Bank Dan Fitzpatrick, and co-founder of the Ronald McDonald House and former General Manager of Philadelphia Eagles Jim Murray as our speakers and guests of honor. We also welcome Consul General of Ireland Ciarán Madden, and Deputy Consul General Eimear Friel.
The Philadelphia Friendly Sons were founded on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1771. In two short years, we will celebrate our 250th anniversary. We are honored to be a part of this incredible history and look forward to many more years celebrating and promoting liberty and charity.
Sincerely,

Reflection Provided by Villanova University Student Isabel Forward
Dear Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick,We all stood on the edge of the rock, shivering, as we looked into the
tumultuous waters fifteen feet beneath us. The storm, the high waves, and the horrified look on our professor’s face only further instilled terror in us. So we stood on the edge, waiting.
We had hiked out to the “Wormhole,” a rectangular opening to the ocean among the cliffs of the Aran Islands. We were greeted with wind, rain, and storms. So a group of individuals - who had only just been strangers - stood on the edge of this rock, waiting for the fear to lessen.
The students on our trip had only met a week before, as we all arrived in the Dublin airport. We each sat in our own rows in the bus as we went on our way to Irish castles and gardens, to the favorite pubs of James Joyce and Oscar Wilde, to graveyards that immortalize the legacies of the people who fought and died for Ireland, and to museums recounting it’s long (and largely, tragic) history. In our free time, we walked the streets of Dublin, looking in shops, trying different variations of brown bread in restaurants, and tasting Irish cider. Through art museum commentary and our shared experience of being completely out of our element, several days after our first meeting, thirteen strangers became friends.
And so we embarked to Clan Macnoise, to the Aran Islands, and then to Galway. There was a sort of melancholy as we said goodbye to our professor, to our bus driver (who, oddly enough, we would later run into on two separate occasions around different cities in Ireland), as our week together exploring seemed like a dream we were waking from. However, as we separated into our respective host houses, we shared the understanding that this was just the beginning.
And so it did begin - a blur of bike rides, sunset soccer games, silent discos (strange, but unforgettable experiences), afternoons of homework at coffee shops, and newfound Irish friends. We spent five weeks encouraging each other to adventure, as we jumped in rivers, went “coasteering” (another crazy and amazing experience - definitely worth Googling), swam with jellyfish, and danced to old American music performed at pubs. We learned from our professors, but learned more from one another, as we continued to push each other to make the most of our time.
When someone would see the sun come through the windows of class, we would schedule a trip to the beach. When tides were high, a group would
jump off of Black Rock - a 30-foot platform where locals jump into the ocean. When new people presented themselves - a college student and clam-fisher from Massachusetts, or a vegan graduate student from Scotland - we would bring them in as friends. When workloads weren’t heavy, we would walk into town to see live music and dance. And when an opportunity would present itself - to go to a sailing festival, to go to concerts, to learn how to hurl, or to see the Cliffs of Mohr - a group would doubtlessly volunteer themselves to go.
As we returned from our last trip to Dingle, we sat amongst each other on the bus, as we realized we had little time left together to discover sites and experiences for the first time. When it came time to part, we went dancing at our favorite pub, we said goodbyes, and we departed as individuals in the indescribable category between friends and family.
From friends and from professors, I had heard that studying in a place completely foreign, you find yourself - but I propose a twist to this common perception. I didn’t’ t go off on my own and find pieces of myself hidden among the Aran cliffs and the coasts of Dingle (although I do think there is truth to that discovery, as well); rather, I found pieces of myself in the people I had met and in the many adventures we shared.
I had the opportunity to find myself in the people of Ireland (both in the historical figures of the past and the pub-crawlers we met along the way), but also from the comers of my own school, which I had failed to explore. Individuals who I had written off as different from me proved to share more with me than I had anticipated.
This conclusion is not limited to this study abroad opportunity - in traveling I have come to realize that there is no flight that can take you far enough away that you will not find pieces of yourself in others at your destination.
When I reminisce on my experience in Ireland, I think back to that day in the Aran Islands as we stood at the edge of the Wormhole - none of us fearless, none of us wholly and completely brave. We came to understand that the small amount of bravery that the first of us to jump lay in all of us: that despite any and all differences, we shared this experience and the courage required to embark upon it.
Alone, we did not find ourselves. But together, we taught each other that we were brave. We taught each other that we were powerful. We told each other we could do it - not in absence of fear, but in spite of it.
So one by one, we stepped off the edge and fell into the sea. The fear that inhabited all of us did not overcome us - and beyond the limits of fear, we found adventure. We found our courage. And in one another, we found ourselves.
Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to be afraid. Thank you for giving this opportunity to others. In their bravery, in their courageousness, and in their willingness to explore a country (not fearlessly, but in spite of fear) I found my own hunger for adventure.
Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.

MEDAL OF THE SOCIETY OF THE FRIENDLY SONS
OF SAINT PATRICK
On the right Hibernia — on the left America — in the center Liberty joining the hands of Hibernia and America, represented by the usual figures of a female supported by a Harp for Hibernia — an Indian with his quiver on his back, and his bow slung, for America — underneath Unite. On the reverse, St. Patrick trampling on a snake — a cross in his hand— dressed in Pontificahbus, — the motto “Hier.”
These devices, designed some years before the Revolution, were certainly ominous, if not prophetic, — The Goddess of Liberty” joining the hands of Hibernia and America, with the superscription, “Unite,” was sufficiently significant, considering that the effect of that union powerfully promoted the subsequent dismemberment of the British Empire, and the establishment of the liberty and independence of America. The motto Hier, or, without the aspirate, Iar, In the Celtic Language, signifies “West,” — and from it came the name of the country Ere, Erin, or Ireland; and Ierna, aspirated Hibernia. But the word “Hier” had in it a duplicate and equivocal signification; peculiarly appropriate as the motto of a society whose object was to “Unite,” in fellowship, the sons of the little Isle of the “West,” with those of the great continent of the “West.”

Joseph P. Heenan Family honors the Society’s Founders and Congratulates our 2019 Honorees:
Kellyanne Conway, Daniel K. Fitzpatrick and Jim Murray.
The Founding Members of the Friendly Sons started a foundation that we continue to build upon today. A foundation not of
concrete or stone, but rather three ideals Love of Ireland, Love of Freedom and Dedication to Charity.
Love of Ireland
It’s a Love of Ireland whose blood runs in our veins, Irish DNA from our Fathers, Mothers, Grandparents passed on to all of her Sons and Daughters. It’s a Love of Ireland why we say,
it’s your Irish heritage that qualifies you for membership here not your gender.
Love of Freedom
The Founding members were involved in every aspect of America’s creation. The Society’s first President, Stephen
Moylan, has been credited with first composing the words “United States of America” Our society supported, nurtured America at her earliest conception, they were present at her birth and have
never left her side since.
Dedication to CharityWithout lasting dedication to Charity our foundation would
collapse. What the founders started in charitable acts has continued for the past 248 years and today that commitment
has never been stronger.
