Prep news!
Literacy/soundwaves focus: This week in Soundwaves our first sound was ‘oy’ in words such as ‘boy’
and ‘toy’. The second sound we covered in Soundwaves was ‘eer/ear’ in the list words ‘ear’ and ‘deer’. In
literacy rotations students practised their Magic 100 words, completed a big book follow up task about
‘The Jigaree’ and unjumbled sentences. The big book this week ‘The Jigaree’ focussed on verbs and the
students completed a writing task identifying what they wanted the Jigareee to copy them doing.
In handwriting we revised the correct formation of the lowercase letter b and the letter p.
Writing: In writing this week we started our letter writing unit. We discussed why people send post cards
and during news we shared post cards we have received.. We made our very own post card about a place
we liked to visit or about Poowong.
Maths: In maths this week we continued working on subtraction. The students made up subtraction sto-
ries about a group of items which they then lost, gave away or took away some, to find out how many were
left. We also continued our unit on time, looking at reading and ordering the days of the week.. We have
also started reading the time on an analogue clock to the hour, for example 3 o’clock.
Integrated studies: This week in science we looked at weather symbols in newspapers and on the tv, and
discussed what each symbol meant
Next weeks news topic: Next week for news students are to share 3 objects that rhyme and 1 that
doesn't. They can either bring the items in or just talk about them
Anyone who still has a portfolio at home from semester one could you please return it next week.
Have a wonderful weekend. Mrs Hallyburton.
Grade One
Literacy/ Soundwaves focus: This week in soundwaves we have been focusing on “th” as in thin
and with and “th” as in feather and this.
Writing focus: This week students we have been finishing our last information reports and
starting our new writing focus of personal writing.
Maths focus: This week we have been revisiting skip counting and number patters. The students
have been having a go at making different number patterns such as counting by 4’s and 8’s.
Chinese: This week we revisited the language we have been covering over the last couple of weeks.
Integrated: This week we did some experimenting with water to see what happens when water land on different surfaces.
Students experimented with sand, dirt, concrete, grass and tan bark to see. The students could then make connections
between this experience and what happens when it rains.
Other things: As we begin to near the end of the year, we will be working on finishing off the student portfolios. There
are a number of these that have not been returned to school. If these could please be returned in the next week that would
be great.
There are a number of students who have library books that are overdue. Students were given a
note the other day with the books that were overdue. Could these please be returned. Permission
forms have gone home this week for our excursion to Inverloch. These need to be returned by
Thursday the 23rd of November. If any parents are interested in coming to help on the day
please let me know.
Enjoy your weekend,
Miss Jones

Grade 2 News
Although last week was a short week we worked solidly and started our testing. We have continued with testing this week and have had a few extra brain breaks to break it up. Literacy/Soundwaves focus: Last week we studied eer as in deer and ear as in dear. This week we looked at th as in feather and also th as in with. Reading /Writing focus: We revised recounts. We wrote about our Melbourne Cup Long Weekend. We used interesting words and made sure that we checked our punctuation. Maths focus: We revisited some number concepts like addition and subtraction, doubling, more and less than and reading numbers in the thousands. Integrated studies: Water. This week we studied the water cycle. We also looked at how we can save water and possibly re-use it. Each week the children look forward to their Art lessons with Mrs Mandemaker. They have been exploring the variety of uses of clay and discovering that they can roll coils, Cheers
Mrs Lacanaria
Grade 3
Literacy: The kids were so excided when they heard about this week’s writing task. We read an article about Uber Elevate, a new service that is being planned foe use in 2023. The difference in this service is that the cars will fly! In the articles the students discovered that the cars are not available as they haven’t been designed yet so each member of the class had the opportunity to design their very own flying car. Once they had designed their car they began writing a report that explained their concept. It has been a fun activity that will continue next week as well. This week we had two sounds in Sound Waves, sh – shell and ch – chicken. Our reading focus was finding the main idea. Numeracy: We had fun with division this week. We started a project which involved dividing a 4 digit number by a single digit number. This however was to develop some sports divisions within a chosen sporting league. The students created a sports league consisting of a number generated by a dice. The league had players, teams, age groups and clubs. The problem they had to solve was to divide their league into divisions because there were too many people in each. This project has helped with understanding remainders and also dividing numbers up to 9,999. The students have also been working on measuring and calculating mass. Science: This week we began our collaborative art/ science project. We have been learning about shadows and how they are created and this is going to feature in a short stop motion video explaining the direction and length of shadows. Mr Horton and Mrs Anthony

Grade Four
Literacy/ Soundwaves focus: This week we still working on our Literacy circles. We have
focused on how to identify the main idea.
Our Soundwaves focus is ch,tch and sh, ch, ti, ci. Words include chicken, match, shell,
station, chef and musician.
Writing focus: This week we have looked at a news article informing us about ‘Uber
Elevate’ (flying cars) which could potentially hit our skies by 2023. The students had to
design their own Uber Elevate vehicle and are writing a report on this.
Maths focus: In maths this week we have looked over our division strategies and learnt how
to break larger numbers up into place value and divide the smaller numbers within the large
one to get our answer. We also looked at how we carry the remainders over to the next place
value. The students have worked on creating their own sports team with larger numbers and
have made posters to display their understanding.
Science: In science this week, we have looked at how shadows play an important role in day
and night. The students will be combining their knowledge of how shadows are seen
differently at different times of the day and we will be combining this with our art
specialist with help from Mrs.Mandemaker to make a Claymation movie in small
groups.
Other things to know: We are organising an excursion for the students, notes will be
going home either the end of this week or early next week. Homework also went home this
week.

Grade 5 News
Soundwaves: This week we studied the graphemes “ oy, oi, boy, coin – eer, ear- deer ear In addition to our usual word study activities, the class has continued to enjoy our daily jumbled word challenge. It has been pleasing to see the grade applying their Soundwave’s knowledge to solve the puzzles quickly. Writing focus: This week we have been writing and reviewing our biographies for our Notables project. This part of the project is very important as the final speech will be based on the information in the biography. The grade has also completed their Health report on what makes our bodies healthy which culminated in an oral presentation to the class. Maths focus: This week in Maths we have completed two maths tests. We have completed the PAT test (Progressive Achievements Tests in Mathematics) and the General Maths on demand test. In addition to testing we have revised short division and looked at how we would apply division to problem solving situations. Other: Next week we will be completing our testing and I would encourage all children to be at school so this can be completed. Thank you to all families that contributed to 5 cent Friday. Our stack of 5 cent coins measured 706 mm. If you forgot about it this week you are more than welcome to donate some 5 cent coins next week.
