Welcome to a fun experiment for children and students to learn about the polar ice caps. To start learning about the polar ice caps we must first learn about what polar means in regards to the environment. Look up polar in a dictionary or online (with your parent or teacher’s permission) and write the definition of polar below.

Now that you know what polar is, let’s look a little deeper at how the polar ice caps could affect life around us. The most basic scientific element about the polar ice caps is that they are just that, ice. Let’s learn a little more about ice itself. What is Ice – Ice is made up mostly of water that is frozen. It also contains air and sometimes other gases and solids as well. Frozen – Frozen is state of matter where it is cooled to a point that it stops moving. When water is cooled to 32 degrees Fahrenheit it changes from its liquid form to its solid form of ice. Glaciers – When ice forms itself into large sheets at the same time it is called glaciers. Glaciers can form on land or in the ocean. Glaciers are present on some continents as well. Greenland is one example of a country that has a lot of glaciers. Sometimes glaciers are called rivers of ice. Ice Sheets – An ice sheet is a mass of land ice that extends more than 20,000 square miles. Ice sheets form when snow falls and does not melt, sometimes it takes thousands of years to melt. The two largest ice sheets on earth are on Greenland and in Antarctica. Mars – Polar ice caps are not just limited to earth. Mars also has some polar ice caps. The ice caps on Mars change with Mar’s orbit around the sun. The Mar’s Global Warming – Global Warming is a term that is used to explain the process by which the earth is warming. The global warming cycle is constantly changing and varies from year to year in hundreds, if not thousands of years at-a-time.

Now that we know some of the science behind polar ice caps, why not do a hands-on science experiment to test our new knowledge?
Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to test out whether or not melting ice will raise the water level in two different scenarios.
Materials Needed This experiment will be done twice. You will need the following materials each time that this experiment is performed:
See-through pot, pan, or bowl
Pot or bowl that will fit in your see-through pot, upside down
A few cups of ice
Tape or marker
Water
Scientific Question This hands-on experiment will test how ice melting effects the level of a body of water. It will be performed twice. Then, the two results will be compared.
Scientific Method for Experiment 1 – Glaciers Glaciers in the oceans are sheets or bodies of ice that are floating in water. Under a parent or teacher’s supervision, perform the following steps:
1. Start by finding a flat spot to perform your experiment. 2. Place your pot or bowl inside your see-through pot, pan, or bowl upside down to
represent a land mass, like a continent. 3. Fill your see-through pot, pan, or bowl about half way up with water. 4. Place a bunch of ice cubes in the water, floating. 5. Then, apply tape to the outside of the container so that you can see the level of the
water. 6. All that is left to do is wait for the ice to melt. 7. Once all the ice is melted, re-measure the level of the water and note your findings.
Scientific Basis for Experiment 1 As we learned earlier, glaciers are ice sheets floating on water. Since the volume of ice is the same as the volume of the water they displace, they are already accounted for in the water level. This means that as glaciers melt they will not increase the level of the water.

Scientific Method for Experiment 2 – Ice Sheets on Land When a glacier is on land then it can greatly shape the land mass it is on. Under a parent or teacher’s supervision, perform the following steps to see what happens to water levels when glaciers on land melt:
1. Start by finding a flat spot to perform your experiment. 2. Place your pot or bowl inside your see-through pot, pan, or bowl upside down to
represent a land mass, like a continent. 3. Fill your see-through pot, pan, or bowl about half way up with water. 4. Stack as many ice cubes as you can on top of the upside down bowl with none floating.
It can melt some then float, but at the start of this experiment all the ice cubes should be on the bowl.
5. Then, apply tape to the outside of the container so that you can see the level of the water.
6. All that is left to do is wait for the ice to melt. 7. Once all the ice is melted, re-measure the level of the water and note your findings.
Scientific Basis for Experiment 1 As we learned earlier, the ice caps are melting. Just like in this experiment, the ice melts and run off into the water. Since the ice did not start on the water, when it melts it will add to the water level and theoretically raise the water level. Did you notice a raise in the water level?
