WINTER 2017

Sometimes all it takes is someone to tell you can’t do

something to motivate you to do it better than anyone else.

Five years ago, after three tours with the U.S. Air Force, Isaac

Bliek was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

(PTSD) and told by the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs that he

would never be able to work again or hold a long-term job.

Yet in late 2016, he earned PHCC’s prestigious Apprentice

of the Year award (pictured right) and placed second in the

Educational Foundation’s Plumbing Apprentice Contest at

CONNECT 2016.

“[Veterans Affairs] told me that I should look into working at a

call center and look for a sedentary job,” Bliek recalls of the

days following his diagnosis. “I took this as a challenge and

used my GI bill to go back to school.” For years, he juggled

work, school, and balancing life as a husband and father to

two boys.

In that time, Bliek secured a Bachelor of Arts degree in

environmental science with a focus in sustainable energy,

but his career path was still not clear. After a series of jobs

in security, retail and at a local humane society, Bliek got

his “light bulb moment” when he saw Mike Rowe, host of

television’s “Dirty Jobs,” address Congress about careers

in the trades. “It was Mike Rowe who gave me the idea to

try a trade,” Bliek says. “I chose plumbing. Why? Because

everyone shits … it was as simple as that.” He adds: “If I

could meet Mike, I would shake his hand, buy him a beer,

and thank him for his foresight into the future and for vesting

interest in the men and women who build and maintain the

infrastructure of our society.”

PERFECTION PAYS OFFWith that inspiration, Bliek started working at Plumbing Design and Installation in Rapid City, South Dakota. “I was very, very green to plumbing,” says Bliek, and his first boss, Steve Darling, challenged him by assigning him to a foreman with extremely high expectations. “But I took to Kenny [Peterson],” says Bliek of the foreman. “I liked his attitude … he demanded perfection. I saw it as a challenge to try and exceed his expectations,” he adds. “I have always attributed my work attitude in this career to my first year and striving for perfection.”

Fast forward, Bliek is now in his third year of his apprenticeship,

working for Midwestern Mechanical in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. “I am still an apprentice, and – while basic labor and work is expected of me – I always look for a way to exceed expectations and help bridge the technology gap that the aging foremen have with technology. This makes me desirable on the job sites and key to project success.”

A FOUR-LEGGED ALTERNATIVE TO MEDSAs many attendees at CONNECT witnessed, Bliek has a four-legged companion in his service dog, Haluah, which means “beautiful woman” in Iraqi Arabic. Like his path to the trades, inability in one area led to opportunity. After Bliek’s PTSD diagnosis, he was offered a chance to go to rehab, “and I couldn’t afford to go,” he says. “I didn’t have the means to continue to support my family while seeking help.” With his wife’s encouragement, he set up an exposure therapy plan, slowly immersing himself in public and experiencing life, but he was still on medication. “It made me feel like life was a dream,” he says.

A service dog proved to be a positive alternative. Bliek spent 1½ years training her, putting Haluah through K-9 good citizen training plus special individual training. “Her role is the work,” and, as was the case during the Plumbing Apprentice Contest at CONNECT, “she gets paid with love,” says Bliek. “She loves her wages!”

ADVICE TO OTHERSAs Bliek heads into the final year of his apprenticeship, his advice for other plumbing apprentices is to strengthen their math skills. “If you’re looking for speed,” he says, “learn the math behind the plumbing.”

That resonates with his belief that the best way to approach the future of the trades is through technology … and working smarter, not harder. “The new generation has the mindset to make the world around them do the heavy lifting for them, whether that’s

Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do: How the Air Force’s Core Values Translate in the Trades

“Expect great things from your vets … and your vets will deliver great things,” says Isaac Bliek a third-year apprentice with a promising second-chance career in plumbing. For his military career in the Air Force, Bliek received an associate degree in criminal justice, plus attended combatives courses and War College. “I wouldn’t change anything,” he says of that training.

Now working for Midwestern Mechanical in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Bliek credits the core values of the U.S. Air Force – integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do – with helping him prepare for his new career. “These three values, accompanied by my family values – the worker, the warrior and the worshiper – have been the chisel and mallet to my life,” he says.

RECRUITING VETERANS

Veterans prove to be a promising talent pool as the p-h-c industry works to fill the crucial shortage of skilled workers. “A veteran is the skilled workforce you are looking for,” says Yvette Martinez of the Tennessee Dept. of Veterans Affairs. They come “ready-made” with skills and are confident, loyal, disciplined, and prompt, she adds.

Could the below profile fit in your company? Don’t overlook military organizations – including your state’s Dept. of Veterans Affairs – in your recruiting efforts.

Common Work Priorities for Veterans:

• Security

• Room for advancement

• Increased responsibility

• Family/team environment

• Problem-solving

• Desire for structured chain of command

• “Give me a place to belong where you care about me.”

answering questions or actually doing the lifting,” he says. “We are about working smarter, not harder.”

Does Bliek feel his transition to the trades was worth the training? “Hell, yes,” he says. “I go to work every day and play with the adult version of LEGOs. The name LEGO, Bliek explains, translated from Danish means ‘play well’… “so every day I play. I enjoy working with my hands.”

His advice to other veterans? “Trades are the future, get in sooner rather than later.” Bliek is proud of the difference he and other veterans have made defending our freedoms. Work in the trades, he adds, “is a great opportunity to defend the infrastructure that has made our country worth defending.”

“Expect great things from your vets … and your vets will deliver great things.” – Isaac Bliek

The Foundation is celebrating its 30th year of providing scholarships to students pursuing studies in our industry. Over 2 million dollars in scholarships have been awarded to hundreds of students in that time.

We are proud to announce another new award available, beginning this year. The new Gerry Kennedy Scholarship Award is named for PHCC’s former Executive Vice President and member of the Foundation Board of Governors. It will feature enhanced award opportunities for applicants active in the Boy Scouts of America. The annual award has been made possible by a generous contribution from Gerry to the Foundation scholarship fund.

Forty other awards are also available this year to apprentices (including those enrolled in our eLearning program) and college bound students. The deadline is May 1st, but applications can be submitted at any time before then.

Our thanks go out to our many contributors and sponsors who make these awards possible and to the PHCC chapters and employers who push their students to take advantage of these opportunities.

2017 corporate sponsors: A.O. Smith Water Heaters, Bradford White, Delta Faucet Company, RIDGID, State Water Heaters. Our scholarships are also sponsored by PHCC of Massachusetts and Texas Auxiliaries, the South Jersey Mechanical Contractors Association, the McGlame-Wordell Scholarship Committee, Gerry Kennedy, Anne Williams and your contributions to the PHCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Fund.

I have been working as a volunteer with the Educational Foundation for at least 15 years because of my love for the industry and my passion for letting the world know about the great educational avenue available to our youth through apprenticeships. Twelve years ago, I said “Yes” when I was asked by the PHCC Educational Foundation to help with the SkillsUSA competition.

Each year, the members of the Foundation’s Plumbing Technical Committee set up plumbing benches for our 45 or so competitors, pre-drilled for the contest. We have pipe, fittings and other materials put out on each bench for the contestants

to assemble. The kids competing use these materials to completely rough-in a bathroom and set fixtures, including running cast-iron for the sewer. Another PHCC member represents us and assists with the HVAC competition where nearly 50 students compete.

Setting up dozens of competition benches and moving thousands of pounds of materials around is hot, sweaty work which reminds my body that our trade is very physically demanding, but something keeps me going back year after year. The kids, whether they win or came in last, are polite, eager and willing to learn…and that is very refreshing.

Through SkillsUSA, the PHCC Educational Foundation is reminding these students, their parents and teachers that it is ok to get your hands dirty to make a living. Just seeing how BIG this event is and how much the volunteers, Foundation staff and sponsors invest in it can convince anyone that a career in the plumbing-heating-cooling industry is a smart choice.

While the SkillsUSA organization provides the venue, it is our own PHCC Educational Foundation that funds the competition. Those heavy wooden install benches and thousands of material pieces all need to get to the competition site in Louisville, Kentucky, as do all of us volunteers helping with the setup and judging. Add to that getting 40+ young people (plus their families and instructors) organized and ready to compete.

This is a massive effort that requires a significant investment of professional staff time and resources to pull off. Our PHCC Educational Foundation, the volunteers and sponsors do it – every year, year after year because it is worth that investment to get those kids into our industry and to

convince their families that they are making a smart career choice.

We are very fortunate to have the help of generous sponsors who provide most of the materials and incredible prize packages for the kids to go home with. But that help does not cover everything.

So folks, bottom line… When someone asks you to contribute to the PHCC Educational Foundation’s Invest in Your Future Campaign ...please remember this real life example of where your donated money is going. This is the real deal - we are helping young people interested in the trades see the real value of being there and what a great career avenue this is.

The Foundation’s online training program for plumbing and HVAC apprentices (eLearning) is getting a big facelift in 2017. The centerpieces of these changes will be the introduction of a brand new Learning Management System and standardized student management procedures.

Enrollment in the Foundation’s online apprentice program has grown rapidly over the past year as more employers have discovered the program’s benefits. However, last Fall our projections revealed that this growth will also cause the Foundation to hit the limit on the number of new students we can accept into our legacy LMS.

Faced with the wonderful problem of too many customers, the Foundation staff team immediately launched into the process of researching possibilities for a new LMS to deliver our online training.

“We are building for the future,” says Merry Beth Hall, Foundation Assistant Vice President, Workforce Development. “The new LMS platform will allow us to improve the quality of our courses, increase the number of courses we can offer and expand the number of students we can enroll. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!”

The eLearning program is approved for the related instruction portion of an apprenticeship program in fourteen states with three additional states pending. Interested in getting the program approved in your state? The Foundation has developed a brief webinar to help walk you through the process of starting an apprenticeship program (including eLearning for related instruction) that is available on the Foundation’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/user/PHCCEF/videos. The Federal Department of Labor paperwork required for the approval process is available through the Foundation.

“WE ARE BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE” Behind the Scenes with the Foundation’s eLearning Program

What is a Learning Management System (LMS)? A LMS system is a software platform that organizations can use to organize and distribute digital training materials, including text, animation, video and testing content. The system can automatically handle many administrative functions such as student enrollment, grading and tracking student progress through their studies.

WHAT CAN APPRENTICES

AND EMPLOYERS EXPECT?

Monthly payment options for tuition

Easier to understand interface for students

Automatic grading of student exams

Instant student and employer access to progress reports

On-demand generation of graduation certificates

Access to training on computers, tablets, iPads and phones

Enrollment at any time during the year

The Evolution of Education – The eLearning program evolved from the PHCC Home Study Apprenticeship Program, which was developed more than 20 years ago as a distance learning course. Sold in three-ring binders, the course was mailed to students who returned written tests to the PHCC office for hand-grading. In 2009, with 46 students enrolled, the Foundation launched the online version of the eLearning courses. Today there are well over 200 students enrolled in the program at any time.

The Foundation provides so much for our industry, but it all begins with the generous people who support our efforts.

Those who care about the future of their company and our profession must do their part and I’m proud to see so many who have stepped forward to contribute.
