Coe College Homecoming
EVENT REGISTRATION EDITION!
“We started this all for YOU in 1920!”
“We rocked it back to life in the 1950s”
“Good times along the long& winding road through the
1960s”
“Disco didn’t kill us in the 1970s”
It’s time to celebrate the history…..
“The mid-1990s meet up with the early ‘60s!”
“The ‘80s, well, didn’t do us any harm ”
“Recovered from near extinction in the ‘00s!”
Not since the 75th Anniversary in 1995 has there been such a
gathering of Iota Chapter alumni as you will experience at Coe
Homecoming 2010! Already, we have over 100 brothers that have
indicated their plans to attend – is your name on the “Planning to
Attend” list on the following page? Please find enclosed all the
information that you shall need to reserve your space to celebrate
Iota Chapters 90th year. In addition to the numerous Coe College
Homecoming events scheduled for the weekend, there are two main Phi
Tau events for which you can register: The 90th Anniversary
Reception & Banquet at the Longbranch Hotel and Convention
Center on Saturday the 16th; and, the 90th Anniversary Golf Outing
at St. Andrews Golf Course on Friday the 15th. You may either
utilize the enclosed registration form with this mailing, OR send
your registration and fees in along with the general Coe College
Homecoming registration that you will received in the mail
separately. You still have ample time to reconnect with your Phi
Tau brethren across the country to encourage them to join you in
Cedar Rapids for this memorable event! We shall perhaps not muster
such a charge again until 2020 – whence Iota will celebrate our
centennial landmark! So, in the short term – this is THE gathering
for which your efforts to attend may be most rewarding - they don’t
come along very often!

As in the past, we have enjoyed a wonderful liaison in the
planning process with the Coe Alumni Office, and we are much
appreciative for their support and assistance in bringing this
event to you. It is time to get your registration in the mail,
secure your lodging arrangements, and elevate your excitement level
towards one great weekend of Phi Tau history at Coe College
Homecoming 2010! We most certainly look forward to seeing you all
there!
Yours in Phi ………..YO!

NOTE: We have done our best to keep registration prices at the
bare minimum - so that costs are not a determining factor for
alumni or undergraduates to attend. Printing, postage and related
costs at the Longbranch for this 90th Anniversary gathering are
being supported by the Iota Chapter Alumni Association & Coe
College Alumni Office. If you would like to help replenish these
Phi Tau funds for future use, please include your donation and send
it along with your registration fees for either of these events.
There is literally no profit margin for us on the golf or banquet –
we are simply passing along our costs from the facility/event –
thanks! 1989 Chapter House Dedication

STILL LOOKING FOR PICTURES! Throughout the celebratory evening
on Saturday, we will be showing a pictorial history of the chapter
via PowerPoint presentation in the ballroom at the Longbranch. We
are still looking for photos to include
in this show, and would welcome any that you can either
digitally email in to us – or mail in with your registration!
(We’ll get them scanned in and back to you in a timely manner!) We
know that there are probably some classic ones lurking out there in
an old photo album or shoebox – so take a moment to dig them out
and get them in to us ASAP!! We surely appreciate your
assistance in making this evening additionally memorable for all
in attendance….thanks!

PHI KAPPA TAU’s #1 CHAPTER in AMERICA! The MAXWELL TROPHY
Belonged to IOTA!
It was August 1985 – the rejuvenated alumni Board of Governors
was kick-started in 1983, and at the 1985 Phi Kappa Tau National
Convention in Scottsdale, AZ – Iota Chapter was recognized as the
best of the best. The Roland Maxwell Trophy is awarded annually to
the chapter which demonstrates administrative excellence and
superior performance in all phases of fraternity operations – so it
was for Iota in the 1984-85 academic year.
Daniel Alpen ’86, Chapter President, received the award in
Scottsdale on behalf of the entire undergraduate and graduate
councils of Iota Chapter. Joining Alpen in Arizona that summer for
the celebration were Gregory Naso ’85 (then on the National
Fraternity staff), Tom Hazelton ’77 (then the Hawkeye Domain
Director), and John Betterton ’88.
This recognition helped spark the chapter into a 3-year capital
campaign which culminated in 1989 with the acquisition of a
fraternity chapter house at C Avenue & 14th St. near the Coe
Campus – the first owned by the chapter since 1932. Alumni
participation in the effort spanned the century including financial
support from brothers Paul Raymond ’27, Bob Sinclair ’27, Will
Davis ’31 and John Burnside ’29. Though the house was sold in 1996,
the Iota Chapter Alumni Association still retains the bulk of funds
donated by alumni during the 1986-89 fundraising campaign. Some of
these funds are bringing this celebration to YOU!
