Dear Friends,

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to The Perlman Music Program’s Fourth Charity Wine Auction.

As a young college student, my wife Toby sat in the cafeteria at Juilliard and designed her dream school: a musical community in which students learned how to grow as free and independent thinkers as well as talented musicians. Nineteen years ago, Toby’s dream was finally realized with our first summer program on the East End of Long Island. Since that summer, the Program has continued to grow, influencing the lives of countless musicians with our world-class faculty, private instruction, performance experiences, and yearlong mentorship.

Toby knew from her own musical education that teaching young, talented musicians is a delicate and involved process, similar to properly storing the perfect wine. Just as different wines develop at their own individual pace, so do aspiring young musicians. Our Program’s faculty recognize that each student needs a personalized approach. It is a process based on the individual. Sometimes it is a slow process, and other times, the development occurs more quickly. No matter what the time frame, when nurtured properly, like good wine, the students only get better with age.

By joining us tonight, you are making a significant investment in the future of classical music. Your generosity will make an important difference for our Program and help us support the world's most talented young artists.

This year’s Auction would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our dedicated Co-Chairs: Paul Gridley, Robert F. Hudson, Joanna S. Rose, George P. Sape, Esq., Michael Troise, Thomas Tuft, The Honorable Ronald N. Weiser, and William Lie Zeckendorf.

I also must thank Michael Troise, who has lent us his ear and sound advice on many occasions and for his invaluable role in writing and preparing this year’s catalogue. Michael is generously lending his experienced services as our auctioneer. His encyclopedic knowledge and inimitable presence at the podium will no doubt make for an exciting and unforgettable evening.

We are incredibly fortunate to have some excellent lots this year, and I extend a heartfelt thanks to all of our generous donors. I hope you will find a few lots that catch your eye and bid high!

Most sincerely,

Itzhak Perlman

about the perlman music program

Founded by Toby Perlman nineteen years ago, The Perlman Music Program (PMP) offers unparalleled musical training to young string players of rare and special talent. With a world-class faculty led by Itzhak Perlman and vibrant programs in Shelter Island, New York City, Florida, and Vermont, PMP is developing the future leaders of classical music within a nurturing and supportive community.

The Perlman Music Program’s core activities are:

• Summer Music School: An intensive summer residency program on Shelter Island, NY that provides extensive teaching, coaching, and performance opportunities for talented students ages 12-18.

• ChamberMusicWorkshop: A concentrated summer program on Shelter Island focused on the study and performance of chamber music masterworks for young artists ages 18-30.

• Stowe Fall Residency: A weeklong experience at the scenic Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in Stowe, Vermont, that includes chamber music, choral, and orchestral performances, and an open rehearsal with local string students.

• SarasotaWinterResidency: A two-week residency, held on the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus, that invites students and alumni to join together to collaborate in exciting solo, chamber music, choral, and orchestral performances.

• AlumniConcertsandMentorship: Regular performance opportunities throughout the year for students and alumni, including a concert series at the Neue Galerie New York and a recital series in PMP's new Kristy and James H. Clark Arts Center on Shelter Island.

• IsraelResidency: In 2010, this exciting program connected outstanding PMP alumni with excellent young Israeli string players, in collaboration with the Buchman-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

Led by Itzhak Perlman, the Program’s faculty is comprised of today’s finest musicians and teachers. Hailing from such prestigious institutions as The Colburn School, The Cleveland Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, and The New England Conservatory, our distinguished faculty is defining the future of classical music. In addition to teaching musicianship and technique, our faculty provides career mentorship that only a successful practitioner with years of experience in the music world can provide.

WINES FRoM tHE BARoNESS PHIlIPPINE DE RotHSCHIlD

There exists no more a storied history in the wine world than that of the Rothschild family. Baroness Philippine Mathilde Camille de Rothschild (born in Paris, France on November 22, 1933) is surely the grande dame of Bordeaux and owner of Château Mouton Rothschild. She also has acted under the stage name Philippine Pascale and is the only daughter of the legendary Baron Philippe de Rothschild. We are honored tonight to present these magnificent gifts direct from the Baroness herself.

“The 2001 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc produced from small yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare (66% of the production made it into the wine. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color and a hint of new saddle leather intermixed with espresso, black currant liqueur, and Asian spices.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“Clerc Milon 2001 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest primarily Merlot with some Cabernet Franc. It exhibits notes of roasted espresso, crème de cassis, licorice, and fudge. It is concentrated for a 2001, with moderately high tannin, and impressive intensity as well as grip. While it is easy to be underwhelmed by this offering, given how spectacular the 2000 is, the 2001 is another strong effort from Clerc Milon.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“Probably as successful as the 2000, the 2001 d’Armailhac, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, exhibits an inky purple color, good sweetness, and plenty of toasty oak, licorice, and spice box notes. Pure, with ripe tannin and low acidity, it should be delicious young and age nicely for up to 12-15 years.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

A MAGNIFICENt MAGNUM oF 2000 CHAtEAU lAFItE

“As hoped for in a great vintage, the 2000 Lafite didn’t disappoint with its trademark cedar and black fruit perfume, crunchy and tangy, ripe berry fruit flavors and a lacy, Chantilly cream texture that finishes so elegantly and seamlessly in the mouth as to be absolutely seductive. This is Lafite with its best, classic foot forward which will without question go down in history as one of the greatest Lafites ever made. Pure Sophia Loren wearing an off-the-shoulder, tantalizingly low-cut, red dress and sensual perfume to match her fiery eyes – it’s time for a cold shower.” Michael Troise

Tonight we offer you an opportunity to own a very special magnum of this magnificent wine, one that comes directly from the château in Bordeaux from Baron Eric de Rothschild as a gift to The Perlman Music Program. Needless to say, we are honored and grateful.

AN EXtREMElY RARE JERoBoAM oF 1982 CHAtEAU tRotANoY

Any history of the vineyards of Pomerol must include some mention of Château Trotanoy. In an appellation where history can sometimes seem to be in short supply, Trotanoy is one of the more venerable estates, dating back to the time when viticulture was being established in the region. At the time, it was in the ownership of the Giraud family, royal courtiers from nearby Libourne, and it was most probably they who were the first to plant vines on the estate, beginning the shift away from arable poly-culture towards what we know is the case for Pomerol today, a situation in which the vine dominates the landscape absolutely.

“This fully mature, gorgeously seductive, fragrant, complex wine offers up intense aromas of jammy fruit, mocha, roasted herbs, and sweet toasty oak. Full-bodied, with expansive, chewy concentration, gobs of fruit, and a soft, low acid plushness, this is the most gorgeous Trotanoy made following the superb 1975.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

A FUll CASE oF 1989 CHAtEAU lA CoNSEIllANtE

Château La Conseillante is located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region, in the commune of Pomerol in the department Gironde. As all wine produced in this appellation, La Conseillante is unclassified, but the estate is estimated among the great growths of the region. Placed on the eastern outskirts of Pomerol, the estate sits between Château Petit-Village, Vieux Château Certan and Château L'Évangile to the west, and eastern adjacent Saint-Émilion neighbor Château Cheval Blanc.

“How much fun millionaires will have debating the virtues of the 1989 versus the 1990 La Conseillante! The 1989 boasts an awesome bouquet of plums, exotic spices, and vanillin. A wine of brilliant definition, and a remarkable marriage of power and elegance, this fabulously long wine has a sweet finish. Relatively full-bodied for a La Conseillante, with great purity, sweet tannin, but noticeable structure and muscle, this is a relatively large-scaled La Conseillante that has always been one of the top wines of the vintage.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

RUB CHoPStICKS WItH tHE IN CRoWD At NoBU 57

You'd better have speed dial if you want to book a table at Nobu 57 any time soon. Getting in here to sample the wizardry of Nobu Matsuhisa's pristine Japanese cuisine is one of life's great challenges. Success is bliss. Anything less is heartbreak. Of course you’ll be dazzled by David Rockwell's storybook décor, but most importantly, you’ll experience surprising textures, dreamlike nuances of flavor, rainbows of colors, dazzling food artwork and bounty from the sea so fresh it appears to shimmer on your plate. Dining at Nobu 57 is to be transported into another world and the journey is magical. Simply be the highest bidder, close your eyes and be swept away…and you definitely won’t be in Kansas anymore.

We’ve even added some amazing wines for you to take along for the voyage. How about a half bottle three pack of Sine Qua Non’s Mr. K The Nobleman and a magnum of 2002 Coche-Dury Meursault?

“The 2003 Mr. K. The Noble Man, a 100% Chardonnay made from botrytised fruit, possesses 278 grams of residual sugar per liter and 9.9 grams of acid per liter. There are a whopping 537 cases of half bottles. While deep golden-hued and honeyed, with brilliant unctuosity, thickness, and richness, it takes third place when ranked against its two sweet siblings. Readers should think of it as a Chardonnay Trockenbeerenauslese.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“Oak, spices, and white peaches are intermingled in the aromatic as well as flavor profiles of the light to medium-bodied 2002 Meursault (Vireuils-Dessus). It has outstanding depth, concentration, and length.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

A VERY RARE MEtHUSElAH oF 1992 DRoUHIN MoNtRACHEt

The Drouhin family has a long-standing relationship with the Marquis de Laguiche family, who owns the largest parcel of the Grand Cru vineyard Le Montrachet. The Laguiche family's holdings are located on the Puligny-Montrachet side which, according to many authorities, is the better side. It has been in their hands since 1363.

Domaine Drouhin Montrachet is an unusually powerful wine with beautifully delineated, very rich, very ripe orchard fruit aromas and noticeably toasty oak notes. The flavor profile is full-blown yet there is lovely detail with a lovely underlying band of minerality which helps balance off the delicious, still vibrant, wonderfully long finish.

Impressive for its regal presence on the palate, this white isn't showy, yet it demands your focus as it crosses the palate in layers of spring blossom, honeysuckle, citrus, hazelnut and mineral flavors. There's a vibrant structure, and the finish keeps on coming in waves.

SCREAMING EAGlE: CAlIFoRNIA’S MoSt SoUGHt AFtER WINE

It started out as just another fall day in Napa Valley for wine critic Robert Parker. The Oakville Grocery was right down the road and there was just enough time to pick up an armful of new Cabernets for the December 1995 issue. On that fateful day though, a star was born. One of the wines he tasted was from a winery he’d never seen or even heard of before. The bottle had a funny looking label, about the size of a postage stamp and an even stranger name to go with it – Screaming Eagle. After all, this was 1995 in Napa Valley. You just don’t name wines after birds.

Well, unless you were hatched from an egg on another planet, you already know the rest. Suffice to say that Screaming Eagle is now, by far, the most expensive and sought after wine in California history, period.

Tonight, do we have something incredible for you? Not only do we have some of this ground-breaking Cabernet Sauvignon to offer you, but we were incredibly fortunate to have, sent to us as a gift direct from the winery, the first time ever release of a meritage Screaming Eagle. That’s right, not Cabernet Sauvignon but a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Talk about rare. The winery had been experimenting with different grape varieties for years, specifically Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. But, beginning with the 2006 vintage, they finally decided to bottle some. We believe we are the first and only charity auction to have this proprietary red blend to offer.

tHE QUARtEt oF QUARtEtS

Arietta Quartet is Arietta’s Medoc-style Napa red blend of four varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Except for the 2007 vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon is at least 50% of the blend. The grapes come from three of Arietta’s top vineyard sources: a three acre vineyard in Coombsville planted meticulously by superstar viticulturist David Abreu in 2002, Hudson Vineyards in Carneros, and Kenefick Ranch in Calistoga, adjacent to the famous Eisele Vineyard. Master winemaker Andy Erickson vinifies the Arietta Quartet in 50-70% new French Oak to make it approachable when young, but capable of improving in bottle for ten years, and lasting for twenty years or more. All the bottles are engraved with a fanciful drawing of the instruments of the string quartet by future Arietta owner Libby Hatton, and fragments of the manuscripts of the Beethoven Cavatina from the String Quartet Opus 130, and the Arietta from his last piano sonata, Opus 111.

Includes:

One specially engraved Three Liter bottle each of 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Arietta Quartet

DonatedcourtesyofCarenandFritzHatton

Arietta’s label incorporates a fragment of the original manuscript of the Arietta movement of Beethoven’s last piano sonata, Opus 111. This movement, one of the pinnacles of classical music, is comprised of an Arietta (song) followed by four variations of increasing complexity. Beginning with the serene “Arietta,” the movement grows organically into an earthy, classical “boogie-woogie,” dissolves into musical timelessness, and finally rises to a startlingly modern, contemplative, and ethereal climax. Beethoven’s tempo indication, “Adagio molto semplice e cantabile” (very slowly, simply, and songlike), is handwritten above the first two bars of the music on all Arietta labels except Variation One, which features the opening measures of the first variation.

GUESS WHo’S CoMING to DINNER?

No, it’s not the President. He’s not even close to being a legend. No, it’s not Prince Philip or Prince Charles. They don’t play instruments at all. And no it’s not Bill Gates or Warren Buffet. All the money in the world can’t buy them the kind of status we’re talking about.

So, who are we talking about then? Hints: one is a living legend and one of the greatest violinists who’s ever lived, and the other is the famous conductor of one of the greatest orchestras in the world.

Now you know, don’t you? Maestros Itzhak Perlman and Alan Gilbert.

Honestly, we didn’t know quite how to describe the awesomeness of what we’re about to offer you. For the first time we know of in the history of charity auctions, two of the most recognizable artists in the world have agreed to host a once in a lifetime gala dinner for six very privileged guests (or three couples).

This dinner will be held in the private room of one of Manhattan’s very top restaurants (to be determined) with great wines specially selected for the occasion by Michael Troise from his personal cellar. Michael promises that the value of the wines alone will be in excess of $5,000.

As a wonderful extra added attraction, there will be a performance by some of Maestro Perlman’s students during the dinner.

Finally, Maestro Gilbert will arrange for the six winners of this lot to have seats in his private box for a performance at Avery Fisher Hall, a very rare and special honor.

Establishing an opening bid per couple for this lot this unique and that most probably will never be duplicated ever again was literally impossible. Let’s just say then, that it’s…..priceless.

A MAGNUM oF 1959 CHAtEAU MARGAUX

It was April 26, 1989 when, while attending the annual $250-per-person black-tie Bordeaux dinner at the Four Seasons restaurant in New York City, a now somewhat infamous wine merchant broke a bottle of 1787 Château Margaux—a celebrated Bordeaux wine that he had valued at more than a half-million dollars. But all was not lost. Opportunely, 193 guests were on hand to witness history dribble onto the blue-and-gray carpet of the Pool Room, and enough of them were wine writers to ensure that this would be the most publicized breakage in the spirits world since Eliot Ness took a sledgehammer to Al Capone's warehouse. The bottle, inscribed with the initials Th.J. and discovered behind a Paris cellar wall in 1985, is thought to have been the property of Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence and found Bordeaux a happiness worthy of pursuit.

We didn’t bring the 1959 Margaux with us tonight.

“One of many now legendary vintages of the inimitable Château Margaux. Hallmark notes of tobacco, smoke, cigar leaf, earth, cassis, plums and cinnamon reveal a velvety soft, lacy and graceful wine. Not a wine to have with food, no more than one would chew gum while looking at a Renoir.” Michael Troise

tHE lEGENDARY CHAtEAU HAUt-BRIoNAlthough grapes are thought to have been grown on the property since Roman times, the earliest documentation indicating cultivation of the parcel of land, now known as Château Haut-Brion, dates back to 1423.

In the classifications of 1855 ahead of the International Exhibition in Paris, Château Haut-Brion was classified Premier Grand Cru,

as the only estate from Graves among the three established First Growths of the Médoc. The prices of Haut-Brion in the 19th century were consistently higher than those of any other Bordeaux wine.

After a series of unsuccessful owners during difficult times, the American banker Clarence Dillon bought Château Haut-Brion on May 13, 1935 for 2,300,000 francs. Several unverified anecdotes surround the acquisition, as Dillon was believed to also consider buying châteaux Cheval Blanc, Ausone or a majority share in Margaux, but didn't care to make the trip on a rainy, chilly day, and chose Haut-Brion for its proximity to Bordeaux and riding facilities. One account claims Dillon never even got out of the car!

“This is profound! The extraordinary 2008 Haut-Brion is a candidate for wine of the vintage. Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it reveals more evolution and complexity in its large-scaled perfume. The dense purple color is followed by a sweet nose of creosote, asphalt, blueberries, black currants and jammy raspberries, sweet tannins, a savory, fleshy mouthfeel and a stunning finish. This incredibly pure, noble wine was produced from one of the estate's smallest crops (only 7,000 cases produced versus the usual 12,000 cases). Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“A gloriously seductive, classic Haut-Brion showing the most savory side of this elegant, finesse-styled wine, the 1985 Haut-Brion has reached its plateau of full maturity. The color is a deep ruby/garnet with some lightening at the edge. A very complex nose of cedar, dried herbs, smoke, creosote, and black cherries, plums, and currants jumps from the glass. In the mouth, it is round, concentrated, medium to full-bodied, with a velvety texture and beautifully integrated alcohol, acidity, and tannin. A beauty!” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

A FUll CASE oF 1982 CHAtEAU CAloN SEGUR

Château Calon Ségur, officially classified as a Third Growth Bordeaux, was once one of the original three vineyards in St. Estèphe. In the 18th century, their holdings were so vast, they included not only Lafite but also Latour and Mouton!

The style of Calon Ségur’s wine is masculine and sturdy. It’s tannic, structured and traditional in its textures with a lean to a brawny of St. Estèphe wine that often takes over a decade or two, or longer to become civilized.

The large, 131 acre St. Estèphe Bordeaux vineyard is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. On average, the vines are 35 years of age. Vinification takes place in large, temperature controlled, stainless steel vats. The wine is aged in 50% new oak on average for 18 months. Production of Château Calon Ségur is on average, close to 20,000 cases per year.

Tonight we proudly present the opportunity to purchase a full case of the now nearly legendary 1982 vintage of this regal wine.

“The wine had an opulent, unctuous texture, and thickness from cask that reminded me of the estate's legendary 1947. Those characteristics are beginning to emerge again as the wine has begun to develop more complexity and shed some of its formidable tannin. This is a large-scaled, super-concentrated wine that requires at least sixty minutes of breathing after decanting. It exhibits a dense, plummy color with some slight amber at the edge. The intense nose of roasted coffee, sweet, jammy, fruity, leather and spice is followed by a full-bodied, tannic wine that is beginning to display the thickness and opulence I had envisioned. Extremely complex aromatically, this full-bodied, still tannic, concentrated, old style Bordeaux has two to three decades of life remaining. It is impressive, but clearly from the old-school of Bordeaux winemaking with rustic tannin, but huge depth and body.” Robert Parker,TheWineAdvocate

oNE oF tWo REMAINING SAlMANAZARS oF RARE VolNAYThe Hospices de Beaune is the result of more than six centuries of history. Founded with the aims of healing the sick and comforting the destitute, the hospital has never ceased to develop, thanks, in large part, to numerous benefactors who have enabled the Domaine to grow, thanks to their gifts of vineyards. The funds collected at the Hospice de Beaune wine auction are entirely destined for the institution’s charities. Ever since 1859, the auction has taken place at the Hôtel Dieu in Beaune, France on the third Sunday of November.

Ever since 2005, Christie’s International has hosted the Hospices de Beaune wine sale and will continue the pursuit of its goals, principally to expand the international renown of the longest-established, most famous charity auction in the world.

Tonight we are proud to present you with an opportunity to own an extremely rare bottle direct from the Réserve Particulaire des Hospices de Beaune arranged especially for the Perlman Music Program by Christie’s International.

Includes:

One Salmanazar (equivalent to 12 bottles) of 1982 Volnay Premier Cru Cuvée Général MuteauDonatedcourtesyoftheHospicesdeBeauneasarrangedbyPerHolmbergofChristie’s

NotesfromPerHolmberg,VicePresident,HeadofWine,Christie'sThere are only two bottles of this wine ever produced. The second bottle is still resting in the cellars of the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune.

The Domaine des Hospices de Beaune is a non-profit organization which owns 61 hectares (150 acres) of donated vineyard land in the heart of Burgundy, much of this classified as Grand and Premier cru. Each cuvée produced is named after the family who originally donated the land. A charity organization with traditions going back to 1851, the Hospices de Beaune donates the proceeds from its annual auction to local hospitals.

The Hospices de Beaune auction has been organized by Christie's since 2005. In 2009, the 149th auction set a record figure, with 799 barrels up for sale and 500 participants from around the world (40% connecting electronically). The auction has in recent years evolved from a wholesale market to a retail market. With bidding by professional and private buyers alike, the barrels, made from 31 cuvées of red wine and 13 of white wine, attain prices usually well in excess of the current commercial values, although the results give some indication of the trend in expected bulk wine prices for the vintage from the rest of the region.

STORY OF THE CUVEE: Paul-Jules Muteau (1856-1927) was a distinguished cavalry officer, who was promoted to General in 1914 and became staff officer of General Foch during World War I. Awarded the Croix de Guerre, he was also a Member of the Legion d’Honneur (Grand Croix). He bequeathed an important estate to the Hotel-Dieu in 1926, including the Domaine of Laborde-au-Chateau alongside many donations to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This cuvée is made up from five superbly-placed Volnay first growths.

A GoRGEoUS CASE oF 2005 PHIlIPPE ColIN CHEVAlIER MoNtRACHEt

As always in Burgundy and never more than today, the complete family name will have to be carefully remembered by the wine lover. For example, if you say Morey, are you talking about Pierre Morey, Thomas Morey, Bernard Morey, Vincent Morey, Jean-Marc Morey, or Marc Morey? If you say Colin, do you refer to Marc Colin, Bruno Colin, Philippe Colin, or Michel Colin, known as Domaine Colin-Deleger, brother of Marc and father of Bruno and Philippe? Last but not least, Pierre-Yves Colin, son of Marc, has married a Caroline Morey. Together, they have created a structure named Colin-Morey. Tricky huh?

The two brothers, Bruno and Philippe Colin, both decided to create their own separate estates after learning at the family estate. Their first vintage was 2004. Every year, 28 different wines are made under the Philippe Colin label. It is already a headache to simply remember their names, but imagine now that you have to cultivate, harvest, mature and bottle them under 28 different labels!

The list ends with the great Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru. Authority, sharpness, brilliance, and intensity are the words that come to mind.

“More obvious wood frames refined, elegant and ripe floral, green fruit and spice hints that continue onto the rich, full and delicious flavors that are really quite forward and possess less underlying tension than normal though there is plenty of finishing punch and vibrancy. This is a powerful Chevalier as there is ample dry extract and the class is obvious.” Allen Meadows, Burghound

A FUll CASE oF 1998 MARGAUX DIRECt FRoM tHE CHAtEAU

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. The great vintages are distinguished by their formidable ability to move us.

Château Margaux has an extraordinary ability to evolve. Over the years, it has developed a finesse, an aromatic complexity and a remarkable presence on the palate. Without question, the hallmark of the wines of Château Margaux is its perfume. In great vintages, it can fill a room with nuances of sweet cassis, creamy raspberries and truffle. If you’ve never tasted this regal wine, loosen up your paddle arm because there will be tremendous interest in this lot, especially since this case comes directly from the château in Bordeaux. As a curious side note, a bottle of Château Margaux 1787 holds the record as the most expensive bottle of wine ever broken, insured at $225,000.

“Forty-five percent of Château Margaux's 1998 crop made it into the grand vin, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. The harvest began on September 28 and continued under mixed conditions until October 9. It is a classy Margaux, with a dark ruby/purple color, sweet tannin, medium weight, and excellent floral and black currant fruit intermixed with toasty new oak. The wine is concentrated, with a velvety texture, and a nicely layered finish. A quintessentially elegant wine.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

AN INCREDIBlY RARE BottlE oF 1990 HENRI JAYER CRoS PARANtoUX

Henri Jayer is unquestionably one of the greatest winemakers in Burgundy’s illustrious history.Cros Parantoux is a premier cru situated in Vosne-Romanée and is now one of the most celebrated wines in all of Burgundy. Whether this is because of the world wide celebrity of Henri Jayer, or whether the quality of this site made the reputation of Henri Jayer is difficult to say but either way, it has been an extraordinary marriage for more than 50 years now. As a result, Cros Parantoux is on almost everyone’s very short list of premiers crus that merit elevation to grand cru status.

When asked why his wines are so consistently great, Jayer simply responds, ‘I make the kind of wine I like.’ His wines are aged in 100% new oak, are never filtered, and are bottled directly from the barrel. The excellent color and well-delineated, intense Pinot Noir fruit he gets could well come from his special cold maceration, which involves totally de-stemming the grapes after picking and putting them in tanks where they stay before the fermentation starts.

Modern oenologists would no doubt be horrified at such a process as the risk of oxidation is high, but never, ever have I tasted a volatile or oxidized bottle of wine from Jayer. As he says, to make great wine, one must assume certain risks.

“I agree with Jayer’s description of Cros Parantoux as he calls it a true vin de garde capable of 50 years of evolution with no problem. Everyone finds something to like in Cros Parantoux but it really requires 10 to 15 years for it to be at its best. Still ruby to the edge, (the 1990 Cros Parentoux) has an absolutely killer nose of stunning complexity, ripeness yet beautiful purity followed by hugely spicy, opulent, dense and rich flavors of real breed and unmistakable class. This is still youthful if no longer young with a finish that is undeniably of grand cru quality and epitomizes power without weight. While this can certainly be approached now with pleasure, it has only just arrived at its apogee and as such, it should hold at this superlative level for years, perhaps even decades.” Allen Meadows, Burghound

GREAt WINES FRoM tHE MAEStRo’S PERSoNAl CEllAR

Okay, so you’ll never even touch one of Itzhak’s two legendary violins; probably a good thing anyway. The amount of green you’d have to cough up if you ever dropped one would cut the national deficit in half.

We have a better idea. Spend a few dollars to help support his students and you can have something else from the Maestro’s personal collection – great wine.

Just take a look at the bottles you can have, a really close look. Talk about legendary. How about Georges Noëllat Grands Echézeaux from four of the greatest vintages of the 20th century – 1959, 1962, 1978 and 1985, all ordered directly from the domaine by the Maestro himself? And then there’s a beautiful bottle of 1990 Château d'Yquem, a wine which Robert Parker called “…an extraordinary effort. Certainly it is one of the richest Yquems I have ever tasted, with 50-100 years of potential longevity. An awesome Yquem!”

Last but not least, talk about huge. How about two rare Methuselahs from Camille Giroud and Comte Armand? Admit it. Isn’t it worth at least the opening the bid for these magnificent bottles just for bragging rights alone?

Lovers of heavy, alcoholic, painfully tannic, fruit bomb wines may want to take a bathroom break now. This lot is for those of you who appreciate elegance, sophistication, class and breed, for those of you who think that Grace Kelly is much more the epitome of timeless beauty than Pamela Anderson. After all, this is 2006 Château Margaux we’re talking about here. Enough said.

“The strictest selection ever instituted at this estate resulted in only 36% of the crop being utilized for the blend of 2006 Château Margaux. Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, it is similar to the 1996, but with sweeter, more seductive fruit in the nose. Displaying terrific purity, elegance, and a distinctive mineral/flower component, it is a medium to full-bodied wine of great nobility that should be at its finest between 2017-2050+.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

A RARE MAGNUM oF 1966 CHAtEAU PEtRUS

By all accounts, Château Pétrus is clearly one of the most sought after wines in the world. The greatest wine of Pomerol in Bordeaux, it has an illustrious history matched by very few others. It was served at the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947 and a case was gifted to Buckingham Palace for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Pétrus's fame in the U.S. grew in the 1960s, with the promotion by Henri Soulé, owner of the Le Pavillon restaurant in New York. According to Alexis Lichine, "Pétrus was served at Le Pavillon in the days when Aristotle Onassis sat at a corner table. After that, Château Pétrus became a status symbol, the sort of name dropped by people who wish to imply not only that they know wine but that they are in wine."

"This dark plum/garnet-colored wine shows plenty of amber at the edge and a sweet nose of melted caramel, licorice, roasted herbs, and sweet curranty and cherry fruit. The wine is medium-bodied, slightly austere, but very complex and elegant. The wine has been fully mature since the early nineties." Robert Parker,TheWineAdvocate

A FUll CASE oF 1988 CHAtEAU lAFItE RotHSCHIlD

There aren’t too many charity wine auctions in the world that afford you the opportunity to win a full case of one of the great wines on the planet. Many East Asian connoisseurs would bob for deep fried dim sum just to get their hands on a bottle, let alone an entire case.

“The 1988 Lafite continues to offer persuasive evidence that it is the wine of the Medoc, as well as a top candidate for the wine of the vintage. Much deeper in color than the 1989, the 1988 has the classic Lafite bouquet of cedar, subtle herbs, dried pit fruits, and cassis. Extremely concentrated, with brilliantly focused flavors and huge tannins, this backward yet impressively endowed Lafite-Rothschild does not enjoy the acclaim of the 1982, 1986, 1989, and 1990, but do not be surprised to see it rivaling those wines in 15-20 years. The Hospices de Beaune is one of the most famous and recognizable buildings in the world of wine. Located in the heart of Beaune, France, it remains today the economic capital of the Burgundy wine trade. Amid a three day festival devoted to the food and wines of Burgundy known as Les Trois Glorieuses or Three Glorious Days, every third Sunday in November since 1851 has been dedicated to a charity wine event, the famous Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction. What differentiates this wine fundraiser from any other, though, is that bidders walk away with not just bottles but barrels. And, charity auction that it is, each barrel purchased supports the funding of an organization with a little heart. In previous years proceeds have supported families with children suffering from cancer and promoted the talents and cultural values of the Roma population in Europe. With bidding by both professional and private buyers, the barrels, from 31 cuvées of red wine and 13 of white wine, attain prices usually well in excess of the current commercial values. The auction has been managed by Christie's since 2005.

Tonight we are incredibly fortunate to have been given a very special Methuselah from a barrel purchased directly at the auction by our very generous donor. Fair warning: this will most likely be your first and last opportunity to own a wine from this famous event, and please believe us when we say that it is not, we repeat, not available anywhere else in the world, period.

Needless to say, anything that comes from the hands of the talented and hard working Bill Harlan turns into gold. The Napa Valley Reserve is a unique member only wine, created by Bill Harlan in 1997 and since then a slowly growing wine club with the goal to reach 300 members. It's very easy to become a member – you only need to get a personal invitation from Bill himself, and of course pay the onetime six figure entrance fee. The winery is situated next to the luxury resort Meadowood in eastern Napa Valley, and grapes (predominately low yielding Cabernet Sauvignon) are sourced from their own vineyard as well as from Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle (I guess), which now is part of this extraordinary venture. These are among the rarest wines in United States.

Among Napa Valley Luxury Hotels, Meadowood is the ultimate luxury resort featuring cozy cottages, elegant suites and spacious lodges in a private, 250 acre forested setting. One of the true luxury resorts in Napa Valley, Meadowood offers golf, tennis, croquet, hiking, swimming, fitness, spa, wine education, and one of only 10 Michelin three-star restaurants in the country.

“Espresso, mocha, dark red berries, rose petals and spices are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2008 Harlan Estate. The wine fleshes out beautifully in the glass as it shows off its class and true pedigree. This is a decidedly ripe, forward vintage, but in exchange the wine will drink well right out of the gate.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“The 2009 [Dalla Valle] Cabernet Sauvignon is a captivating wine graced with exquisite finesse, depth and grace. Seemingly endless layers of dark red fruit, tar, spices, flowers and tobacco are woven beautifully in this stunning, deeply expressive Cabernet.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

GRAND GRAND CRUS

Talk about grand. How about having these amazing wines to put some lead in your cellar pencil? Roumier, Mommesin, Grivot, Rousseau, Le Moine and Potel are some of Burgundy’s most respected producers. Read through just a few of these tasting notes and see exactly what we’re talking about.

“Superb scents of spicy candied cherries, perfume, roses, blueberries, and mint can be discerned in the aromatic profile of the sensual 2002 Roumier Bonnes Mares. A wine of magnificent breadth, power, focus, and purity of flavors, it gracefully dances across the palate releasing a myriad of super-ripe red fruits. Exceptionally well-balanced, its satin-textured, seamless personality lingers for 40 seconds in the finish, exhibiting additional waves of sweet red cherries. This tour de force should be drunk between 2007 and 2017.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“Boasting a nose of dark fruits intermingled with roasting spices, bacon, licorice, tar, and red cherries, this powerful wine [2002 Mommesin Clos de Tart] is rich, deeply concentrated, and intense. Loads of flesh, muscle, and broad layers of blackberries, red fruits, spices, and stones can be discerned in its personality. In addition, this exceptional effort reveals an admirably long finish studded with loads of ripe tannin enveloped in black fruits. It is a great Clos de Tart that should stand the test of time.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“[2002 Grivot Echézeaux] Spicy, floral and wonderfully pure black fruit aromas that give way to flavors that are sweet, delicious and remarkably supple, indeed even more so than the Clos de Vougeot yet the finish is very firmly structured and there is excellent mid-palate punch and sap. This is an absolutely gorgeous wine of real depth and striking style. Wow!” Allen Meadows, Burghound

A MIXED CASE oF tERRIFIC BoRDEAUX

Let’s see. Would they like 1979 Haut-Brion, 1964 Haut-Brion, 1964 Lafite, 1986 Lafite, or maybe even 1961 Vieux Moulin? Wait a minute. This is for a great cause. I’ll just donate all of them.

Thanks to a very generous donor we have an assorted case of Bordeaux that will make you the toast of the town. Then it’ll be your turn to try to decide which wine to serve at your next big party.

“The 1986 Lafite possesses outstanding richness, a deep color, medium body, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length. The penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, with awesome extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense potential.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“This wine [1979 Château Haut-Brion] has enjoyed a spectacular development in the bottle, and, while drinkable upon release, it remains one of the most sumptuous, complex, and satisfying Haut-Brions of the last twenty years. It is certainly the finest wine of the vintage from Bordeaux's Left Bank. The wine has taken on a dark plummy/garnet color, and displays a magnificent tres Haut-Brion nose of jammy black fruits, earth, tobacco, smoke, and sweet fruitcake aromas. It is rich and medium to full-bodied, with impressive elegance, purity, and overall harmony.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

A FUll CASE oF 1998 HAUt-BRIoN

Here is a great opportunity to add one of the great wines of Bordeaux to your cellar. In a word, the red wine of Château Haut-Brion is simply extraordinary. At its best it displays text-book Graves characteristics of cigar box, curranty fruit, earth, smoky spice and cassis. The high Merlot content, compared to the Médoc First Growths, gives it a voluptuous edge, but does not in any way detract from its ability to age.

Tonight we offer you a full, twelve bottle case from the 1998 vintage. We promise that this will be a wine you will enjoy for years to come.

“Jean Delmas is thrilled with what he achieved at Haut-Brion in 1998. It is one of the great successes of the vintage. Moreover, it is the paradigm for elegance allied to power. The color is an opaque purple. The nose offers up sweet black fruits intermixed with roasted herbs, pain grille, and minerals. There is a sensational, plush texture, yet the wine comes across as medium-bodied, with multiple levels of flavor, as well as gorgeous ripeness and purity. It possesses fine density, but there is no sense of heaviness or imbalance. It is a brilliant classic. Lovers of this estate's distinctive, highly individualized, complex wines should not miss it.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

WHEN lESS ISN’t MoRE – PARt 1

Sure, famed architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, coined the phrase “Less is more” to describe his belief that minimalism is the key to true aesthethics in building design. Well folks, that may be fine and good when you’re building a house, but it’s definitely not when you’re stocking your wine cellar. We’re talking about some amazing wines here and, when it comes to name like Pétrus, La Tâche, Leroy and Cristal, less definitely isn’t more. More is more. And that’s that. Read some of these tasting notes and then get you’re paddle ready for…..well, more. “Roederer’s 1996 Cristal is gorgeous. The expressive, floral bouquet melds seamlessly into an expansive palate of sweet fruit. This is an exceptionally polished and finessed Cristal, but like so many vintages, it needs time in bottle, regardless of how rewarding it is today. Even after all of these great 1996s, the Cristal delivers the goods.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate “The 1975 Yquem may turn out to be the greatest of the modern-day Yquems. It is a wine of astonishing power and finesse, with a finish that must be tasted to be believed.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“[1961 DRC Grands Echézeaux] A caramel and smoke nose that has a slightly odd lactic aroma to it that never did completely dissipate leads to rich but clearly very mature flavors and a round, supple, nicely detailed finish where the acid it beginning to come through on now.” Allen Meadows, Burghound

“[1985 Leroy Ruchottes-Chambertin] The barest hints of sous bois and truffle combine with rounded, lovely, complex, supple flavors that display fine length. Very classy juice that is drinking perfectly now though it should hold for some time to come.” Allen Meadows, Burghound

"The 1995 La Tâche gives very little on the nose to begin with but soon blossoms into the most incredible cherry compote, black truffle, cloves, loam, saucisson and tobacco leaf aromas. The palate shows exemplary structure and concentration, seamlessly knitting very crisp acidity with a firm level of very finely grained tannins and layer upon layer of complex fruit, mineral and game flavours. Very long finish. This wine has many great years left and will generously reward the patient.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

WHEN lESS ISN’t MoRE – PARt 3“[1986 Château Margaux] A magnificent example and one of the most tannic, backward Margauxs of the last 50 years, the 1986 continues to evolve at a glacial pace. The color is still a dense ruby/purple with just a hint of lightening at the rim. With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Very full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, great purity, and a very masculine, full-bodied style, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“Bottled very late (November, 1997), the 1995 Château Margaux has continued to flesh out, developing into one of the great classics made under the Mentzelopoulos regime. The color is opaque ruby/purple. The nose offers aromas of licorice and sweet smoky new oak intermixed with jammy black fruits, licorice, and minerals. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with extraordinary richness, fabulous equilibrium, and hefty tannin in the finish. This is a thrilling Margaux...” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“Along with Clinet, Pétrus has produced the top wine in Pomerol. The 1996 Pétrus boasts a black/ruby/purple color, as well as a wonderfully sweet nose of black-cherries, raspberries, truffles, cedar, and vanillin. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with considerable power and concentration, this is a superb effort in what was obviously a difficult year for Pomerol. The wine possesses excellent sweetness, high glycerin, and a layered texture.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“This wine has put on weight and, as impressive as it was from cask, it is even more brilliant from bottle. The 2000 Léoville Las Cases is truly profound, with an opaque purple color and a tight but promising nose of vanilla, sweet cherry liqueur, black currants, and licorice in a dense, full-bodied, almost painfully rich, intense style with no hard edges. This seamless classic builds in the mouth, with a finish that lasts over 60 seconds. Still primary, yet extraordinarily pure, this compelling wine, which continues to build flavor intensity and exhibit additional layers of texture, is a tour de force in winemaking and certainly one of the great Léoville Las Cases.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate Includes:Two 750ml bottles of 1986 Château Margaux

AN IMPERIAl oF 2005 BEllEVUE lA MoNDottE

No, you’re not seeing things. This really is an incredible Imperial of one of the great wines of the much heralded 2005 Bordeaux vintage. Here’s what Michael Troise had to say about this in his 2005 Vintage Report.

“Without question, the 2005 vintage will go down in Bordeaux history as one of the greatest of all time, period. Although only time will tell exactly how great, suffice to say that at this very early stage in its evolution, it is a vintage whose wines simply have no reference points. To a person, all of the Bordelais I spoke with, some of whom were around to have vivid memories of 1961, 1959, 1947 and even 1945, said that they had never tasted young wines as perfect as these. Although my personal experience tasting out of barrel doesn’t go back nearly as far as some of these well respected old timers, I can only agree that, particularly at the very highest levels of each appellation, the 2005 vintage has potentially produced some of the greatest wines that Bordeaux has ever seen. However, given that the wines are to my mind atypical in many ways their having unprecedented profiles of high alcohol, high tannins, high sugar and, very unusually, high acid, I’m careful not to proclaim them the hands down best ever just yet. I think that to do this with this vintage would be tantamount to declaring the perfect apple to be better than the perfect orange.” Michael Troise, The2005VintageinBordeaux

“This tiny gem of a property, cropped at 15 hectoliters per hectare, is composed of 5 acres of 45-year old Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a tiny parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon. It has produced one of the vintage’s most compelling wines in 2005. Sadly, there are only 4,000 bottles of this inky/purple-hued St.-Emilion. It boasts an extraordinary perfume of graphite, blackberries, cassis, and sweet kirsch intermixed with notes of incense, spice box, licorice, and subtle wood. Stunningly rich with full body, zesty acidity, and high but velvety tannins, the final blend is composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This monumental St.-Emilion requires a decade of cellaring, but it should last for 4-5 decades. It will unquestionably be one of the vintage’s immortals.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

MY oH MAYA This year, we are the honored recipient of a rare magnum from Naoko Dalla Valle - her beloved Maya. This bottle, from the 2009 vintage, is so beautiful it will leave you speechless when you see it. The flaming red logo, Maya, against the jet black background conjures up images of a fiery, jet-black haired contessa under a dark, moonlit sky, her red lace dress whirling gracefully as she pulsates to the flamenco music of a Spanish guitar. As for the wine, it is nothing short of spectacular. So silky, so rich, so seductively scented, this beautifully proportioned wine will mesmerize you with its sensuality. Go ahead. Have a little sip. Let this magical elixir cast its spell over you. "The 2009 Maya Proprietary Red boasts striking inner perfume and fabulous overall balance. Layers of deep, mineral-infused fruit caress the palate. Black cherries, cassis, espresso, smoke, licorice and red berries are some of the many notes that flow from the glass. The 2009 retains all of its richness and voluptuousness through the creamy, inviting finish. This is a fabulous Maya.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

BEAUtY AND BRAINS

You’ve seen her picture and you’ve read about both her and her wines in every wine publication you can imagine. She’s talented, smart, and she’s as beautiful as her wines. We’re talking about Ann Colgin, of course. Ann’s wines are reference points for just what heights mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux varietals, and more recently, Syrah, can achieve in Napa Valley. Assisted by David Abreu, the well-known Bordeaux wine consultant, Dr. Alain Raynaud, and Allison Tauziet, who has skillfully replaced the brilliant Mark Aubert, Ann always produces some of the very finest wines every vintage, perhaps her favorite of which is Cariad, Welsh for “love”.

A MAGNUM oF 2009 CHAtEAU SMItH HAUt lAFIttE

Let’s start by saying that, no, we didn’t misspell “Lafitte”. To this day, the château uses the original spelling, which dates back to the fourteenth century.

It is claimed that viticulture was undertaken at Château Smith Haut Lafitte by the Bosq family as long ago as 1365, when the Médoc was just a marsh. The mist clears a little in the 16th century, when records prove the existence of the estate, although it was not until two centuries later that it was purchased by George Smith, a Scottish merchant, who gave his name to the property.

By 1842, however, the estate was in French ownership, as Monsieur Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux, inherited it from his mother. This family increased the reputation of Smith-Haut-Lafitte working with great care in the vineyard, and the wine was now exported worldwide, carried by Louis Eschenauer. In 1958, the Eschenauer company purchased the property, and the present owner, Daniel Cathiard, took control about 35 years after that. It is Cathiard, an Olympic skier who purchased the estate with the wealth generated by his national chain of supermarkets and sporting goods stores, who has been credited with returning Smith-Haut-Lafitte to the level of quality that it previously exhibited.

“The finest wine ever made by proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard, the 2009 Smith-Haut-Lafitte exhibits an opaque blue/purple color in addition to a glorious nose of acacia flowers, licorice, charcoal, blueberries, black raspberries, lead pencil shavings and incense. This massive, extraordinarily rich, unctuously textured wine may be the most concentrated effort produced to date, although the 2000, 2005 and 2010 are nearly as prodigious. A gorgeous expression of Pessac-Leognan with sweet tannin, emerging charm and delicacy, and considerable power, depth, richness and authority, it should age effortlessly for 30-40+ years. Bravo!” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

A VERtICAl oF SHAFER HIllSIDE SElECt

Shafer Vineyards traces its beginnings to 1972 when John Shafer left a 23-year career in the publishing industry and, with his family, moved to the Napa Valley to pursue a second career in wine. After purchasing a 210-acre estate in Napa Valley's Stags Leap District, the Shafer family faced the arduous task of replanting the existing vineyards, which dated to the 1920s, and terracing the steep and rocky hillsides, eventually expanding vineyard acreage to its current 50 acres. Evolving from grape growers to vintners, the Shafers crushed their first Cabernet grapes in 1978 and began construction on their winery a year later.

The first Shafer Cabernet became a benchmark, winning the acclaimed San Francisco Vintners Club taste-off upon release and, over a decade later taking first place in an international blind tasting held in Germany, where it outranked such wines as Château Margaux, Château Latour and Château Palmer.

“One of the world’s most extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons is the 1,800-2,400-case offering of Shafer’s Hillside Select. Aged 32 months in 100% new French oak prior to bottling, it is one of the world’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignons.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

You will enjoy premium seating among the 60 students attending the perpetually sold-out course, certainly the most popular event at the Business School outside of happy-hour! The instructor will be Philippe Newlin, former tastings director of Wine & Spirits Magazine, the host of the New York Times / Fairleigh Dickenson University on-line wine course, and the wine ‘professor’ at both Columbia and Yale’s School of Management. You can expect top-flight Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and no exam!

La Grenouille opened its doors on a quiet night in the midst of a December snowstorm in 1962. From the first day there were flowers, but few as they were, this was to be the birth of a tradition. La Grenouille serves classic French cuisine and inspired creations in a glowing setting that many consider home. Fittingly, it has been awarded a three-star rating by The New York Times and received and incredible rating of 28 in each of Zagat’s three categories: food, décor and service.

“[1966 Louis Roederer Cristal] A very rare and stunning wine, still with a rich and creamy mousse and pin-prick bubbles that tickle with a hazelnut, warm brioche and white flowers bouquet.” Michael Troise

A MAGNUM oF 1976 CHAtEAU lAFItE RotHSCHIlD

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most renowned wine properties in the Médoc. Owned by Baron Eric de Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild is also one of the largest Médoc estates.

The vineyards of Château Lafite are found at the northern tip of the Pauillac appellation, just below the boundary with St. Estephe. There is evidence of an estate on this site as far back as the 14th century, and of exports of wine to the UK in the early 17th century. The current owners, the Rothschilds of the famous banking dynasty, bought the property in 1866, but this is a different brand of the family from that which purchased Château Mouton-Rothschild. For many years, the Rothschilds’ control of Lafite was very much exercised at a distance, compared to the hands-on influence of Baron Philippe at Mouton, but since the Second World War this has changed somewhat, with the current owner, Eric de Rothschild, presiding over an extensive programme of investment in both vineyard and cellar.

“The 1976 Lafite clearly stands far above the crowd in this vintage. A beautiful bouquet of seductive cedarwood, spices, and ripe fruit precedes a very concentrated, darkly colored wine, with great length and texture. Some amber is just beginning to appear at the edge. The 1976 has turned out to be the best Lafite of the '70s. It is gorgeous to drink at present.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

EXCEPtIoNAllY RARE RIDGE MoNtE BEllo

Ridge’s iconic Monte Bello Proprietary Red (no longer called Cabernet Sauvignon) is one of the candidates for the longest-lived Bordeaux blend made in California. Even vintages from the late sixties and early seventies are still vibrant wines. The winery owns just over 100 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vines, and production varies enormously based on the mountain climate. These wines continue to be anomalies in the sense that the Cabernet Sauvignon component is aged in American oak, a somewhat contrarian procedure since most top producers long ago moved to French oak.

“The 2006 Monte Bello (68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc) is a very strong effort. Its dense purple color is followed by copious aromas of creme de cassis, licorice, spice box, and a touch of oak. Well-balanced, dense, pure, layered, and rich, its big, rich style is similar to the 2003. This cuvee should keep for 25-30 years in a cool cellar.” Robert Parker,TheWineAdvocate

MAGNUM OPUS

Now here’s a work we’d love to experience any day of the week: Magnums of Domaine Pegau Cuvée Réservée and Château Talbot.

“The bottled 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée is as compelling as I thought it would be after tasting it last year. A blend of 85% Grenache with the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and small dollops of the other authorized varietals, this wine tends to come from the estate’s holdings in the eastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape. The opaque purple-colored 2009 exhibits magnificent, rich berry fruit intertwined with cedar, Christmas fruitcake, licorice, charcuterie, roasted meats, smoked duck, kirsch, blackberries and god knows what else. It is an amazingly complex, rich, full-throttle wine that reminds me somewhat of what the 1990 tasted like in 1994/1995. It is a magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“[1995 Château Talbot] This wine has turned out to be more impressive from bottle than it was in cask. It is a charming, intensely-scented wine with a tell-tale olive, earth, grilled beef, and black currant-scented bouquet soaring from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, with low acidity, and round, luscious, richly fruity flavors, this is a meaty, fleshy, delicious Talbot that can be drunk now.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

KING KONGSGAARD

Maggy and John Kongsgaard, fifth-generation Napa natives, and their son Alex make small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, Albarino, and VioRous (Viognier/Roussanne blend). Their shy-bearing vineyards and traditional, low-intervention winemaking techniques produce wines of high intensity. Production is limited to what they can make with their own hands in their cave on the eastern rim of the Napa Valley.

Although most of the Kongsgaard’s wines are sold primarily through an annual mailing list offering in September of each year and to fine restaurants around the world, tonight we give you a chance to avoid withering away at the back of the pack, and what a chance. Tonight we offer you not one, not two, but three Kongsgaard Magnums. Don’t bother pinching yourself. You’re not dreaming. From a top vintage for proprietor/winemaker John Kongsgaard, the 2010 Chardonnays are among the finest he has made to date. They combine great richness and bold flavor profiles with extraordinary minerality and definition. One-hundred percent whole clusters are used for the Syrahs, and Kongsgaard’s Syrahs have a very distinctive style.

“The 2010 Chardonnay "The Judge" is quite reserved, especially next to the other wines in this lineup. Layers of rich fruit are hidden behind a wall of structure. Right now, the 2010 is all about potential, but the integration of fruit, oak and minerality is hugely promising.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“The debut vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005, has turned out beautifully. Made from fruit grown in David Abreu’s vineyards, this Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) comes from three distinct vineyards, one above Dalla Valle, and two on the back streets of St. Helena. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of espresso roast, fudge, forest floor, crème de cassis, and smoked meats. The wine is layered, full-bodied, and rich. A tour de force in Cabernet Sauvignon." Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

“A huge, massive force, the 2007 Syrah Hudson Vineyard combines chocolate, creme de cassis, blackberries, soy, beef jerky, smoked game, and Peking duck characteristics in its thick, juicy personality. Full-bodied with amazing purity and a stunning finish, it should turn out to be as good as the 2006, with perhaps more aromatic fireworks.” Robert Parker, TheWineAdvocate

FABUloUS FAIVElEY

The 2010 vintage in Burgundy may just go down in history as one of the very greatest ever. It is shaping up to be one of those rare, remarkable vintages in which weather patterns conspire to produce wines of outstanding quality in some of Europe's most famous wine regions. As in Bordeaux, with Burgundy, the vintage follows on the heels of a sensational 2009, where the red wines were ripe, forward and low in tannins. This comes on the back of a celebrated 2008 vintage and the now much-in-demand 2005—a year when the wines were described as immaculate. While the best whites have incredible concentration and flesh on the palate; look out for Corton-Charlemagne in particular. Moreover, the high acidity will enable these wines to age for many years and develop unique and attractive tertiary notes. In short, they will become much more complex.

Among the producers who made absolutely extraordinary wines in 2010 is Domaine Faiveley. They are wines of great intensity, yet superbly balanced. Needless to say, they will reward patience with aromas and flavors very rarely seen in Burgundy.

“The 2010 Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons has a brooding, deep and introverted nose grudgingly gives up notes of cassis, earth, wood and a hint of animale. The intense, brawny and imposingly structured flavors possess superb volume and almost breathtaking power on the explosive and mouth coating finish that is of monumental proportions. This is a classic Corton yet consistent with the style of the 2010 vintage, this is not unduly rustic, indeed the tannins, while firm, are actually relatively refined. A knock out by any standard but at the same time, a wine for the genuinely patient.” Allen Meadows, Burghound

“In contrast to its two grands crus stable mates, this [2010 Faiveley Corton Charlemagne] has already eaten almost all of its wood which allows the ripe green fruit, stone, apple and subtle spice hints to shine. There is very good richness to the precise and overtly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in a stunningly long and cuts-like-a-knife finish. This bone dry effort is almost painfully intense and there is a salinity that adds depth to what should be a masterpiece of wine in due time.” Allen Meadows, Burghound
