creditsThe first hints that spring is coming to the Tri-Cities are starting to show. As little green shoots start to pry their way out of the soil and blossoms start to unfurl, this time of year always gives me a new burst of energy.
It may be that those extra hours of daylight give me the boost I need to get more done in my day; or maybe it's just that with so many things around me in a state of renewal, I too feel refreshed and energized. Whatever the cause may be, spring is definitely a time for leaping forth in all aspects of life.
I've had the great pleasure of watching my new business, CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities, begin to blossom into what I originally envisioned when we opened our doors at the beginning of this year. Spring is the prime time for the real estate market—homes have their best curb appeal when they're sur-rounded by fresh greenery, buyers will happily spend a sunny day out touring open houses, and everyone feels ready to spring forward in their lives.
I hope that this issue leaves you feeling refreshed and energized. The time is upon us to start enjoying the best of what the Tri-Cities has to offer!

HUMANITARIAN AT HEART
Junior AchievementAnnual bowling event puts the "fun" in "fundraiser"
JA's annual bowling fundraiser was held at Spare Time Lanes in Kennewick and featured a celebrity theme. Donations generated through this event help provide JA programs for nearly 10,000 students in more than 360 local classrooms in Benton, Franklin, and Walla Walla counties.
Junior Achievement is the world’s largest non-profit economic education organization. The JA mis-
sion is to educate and inspire young people (grades K–12) to stay in school, achieve financial literacy, and become prepared for the work force. JA offers the opportunity to polish presenta-tion skills, represent a company in the community and make a striking difference in young people’s lives. JA volunteers are trained to teach a series of engaging hands-on lessons in a local classroom.
Last year, 350 volunteers from our business community taught the JA curriculum to 9,161 students in 79 classrooms. With stellar support from the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla com-munities, JA has reached more than 100,000 children since 1987. Programs are offered in
Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, Kiona-Benton City, Columbia Burbank, Finley, Prosser, North Franklin, and Walla Walla school districts.
Nearly 2,000 business and education leaders enjoyed great fun for a great cause at Junior Achievement’s Celeb-rity Bowl 2012. The Tri-Cities’ hottest fundraising event ran February 27th-March 3rd at Spare Times Lanes & Arcade in Kennewick. More than $50,000 in prizes included fabulous resort vacations, airline tickets and more. With a goal of raising $300,000 for our local students, the bowling classic is the largest (per-capita) and most successful Junior Achieve-ment (JA) bowling event in the country.

Nothing proved this truer than the illustrious turnout to the Grand Opening event on Feb-ruary 3rd at CENTURY 21 Tri-
Cities’ brand new office building. The festivities included more than 200 at-tendees, including the Chief of Police and the Fire Chief. Twigs Bistro, Lo-nardo’s Gourmet Bakerie and Preston Premium Wines provided decadent cuisine and select refreshments to all in attendance.
As associates and friends mingled amidst the crowd, private tours of the new building were given, and sneak-peeks at the business’ intro-ductory commercials animated the background. The event was started, and excitement heightened, as the Tri-Cities Commerce presented Vicki with the symbolic scissors to cut the ribbon, officially opening CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities for business.
Vicki could tell from the turnout that this first year in operation was going to be something truly special. The local support, participation and interest has humbled Vicki, further motivating her to fulfill her ultimate goal when open-ing the brokerage: to revolutionize the way homes in the Tri-Cities are mar-keted, and to sell more homes, faster, than any other brokerage in the state. The CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities brokerage doesn’t only hope to achieve this goal, they have taken action to practically ensure it.
Unique to CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities and unlike any other brokerage in the area is their marketing agency, MM3 Design. Able to provide immedi-ate and dedicated marketing needs, CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities, with MM3, stands ahead of the rest, providing
professionally designed advertising. Making the homes they sell more prominent, visible, and appealing is a complimentary courtesy CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities provides.
Lisa Monteagudo, President and CFO of MM3 Design Agency, helped build CENTURY 21 with Vicki’s goal of providing the best service and quality to the Tri-Cities. “Vicki is a very pas-sionate and driven individual who doesn’t settle for the bare minimum,” says Lisa, “Failure is not an option for this lady.” Vicki, who has been a long-standing top-performing broker in the state for years, can’t deny witnessing her determination pay off. Known as a celebrity in her own right, her noto-riety and reputation grows both from her success in real estate transactions and in her personal experience with those she works with.
Says Lisa of Vicki’s work ethic, “A job is not a job if you truly love what you do and in turn you are successful if you care about your customers.”
So what’s in store for CEN-TURY 21 Tri-Cities in 2012? Growing, producing and bringing on more brokers is Vicki’s plan. But not just anyone will do; Vicki is diligently recruiting superla-tive candidates to compile her team. Currently boast-ing five brokers (Michael Mackay, Jane Fallon, Karen
Buchanan, Christine Sabala, and Amy Schneider), the office hopes to maxi-mize its office space by bumping up its team to 16 brokers by the end of the year. That depends, of course, on scouring out eleven more agents to invite aboard, building a superb team of brokers.
Vicki and the CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities team invite you to the office to learn more about the market and the ser-vices they provide to the residents (and soon-to-be residents) of the Co-lumbia Basin. Visit their new building at 1020 N. Center Parkway, Suite A in Kennewick and enjoy river views and inspiring contemporary décor. For a digital overview, be sure to “like” them on Facebook at facebook.com/century21tricities, and be the first to see new homes, exciting news and insider’s tips from the renowned team themselves. n

The plant world is so diverse with different sizes, colors, textures, flowers and shapes that you don’t need to put in year-round work to keep up a beautiful yard. You just need to invest a little time to start your yard off in the right di-rection to being low-maintenance. The following design tips will reduce your
trimming, mowing and weeding workload.
Have Healthy PlantsA well-fed and hydrated plant is a healthy plant. Get on a routine schedule with a slow-release fertilizer (lasts six to eight weeks) and you’ll only need to feed three times a year. This builds tough, healthy foliage to better resist bugs, weather conditions and diseases. Water your soil so it’s moist to 12 inches deep, where the roots are. Finally, if you train your plants to be watered in longer intervals but less frequently, they can handle summer heat better.
Reduce Lawn Square FootageLawns give the impression of being low-maintenance, but in reality they need to be mowed, edged, watered, and fertilized regularly. A lot of time in a week is dedicated to keeping the grass in check. Compare that to a well-designed flowerbed, which only needs to be worked on every two to four weeks.
Select the Right Plant for the PlaceThe right plant for your space is easy to find in today’s garden world. If you select a plant that won’t overgrow the space or be too tall or wide and can handle the conditions of the spot, you’re going to have less work keeping it happy. Most nursery stock has tags or signs talking about their mature size and preferred growing conditions: for trees it’s 30 years; for shrubs, it’s 10 years; and for perennials, it’s three to four years. A plant that fits the bed doesn’t need to be pruned or trimmed regularly to keep it from getting too big. As for the conditions of the garden bed, choose a plant that likes the light, moisture (how it is irrigated) and wind exposure of the bed.
Keep it SimpleTrimming plants to be perfect squares, circles or animals takes a lot of time. If you want to reduce your maintenance load, dump the unnatural shapes. If you invest the time, you will be able to find a plant that gives a great shape. When mixed with other plants, awesome curb appeal happens.
Don’t over-plant a flowerbedIf you provide enough room for the plants to only touch at maturity, this allows for airflow between plants to keep diseases from developing, reducing your potential need to spray. It also reduces your time to prune so the plants don’t look overgrown.
Proactive WeedingSome people enjoy pulling weeds, but too many weeds are stressful. Use a two- to three-inch deep bark mulch or rock with a good grade of landscape cloth. This will choke most weeds out. A good grade of landscape cloth is one that you can’t see light through. If you see light, the weeds can grow through. Once the flowerbed has been established you can apply pre-emergent herbicides like Preen, corn gluten (organic) or Amaze as directed on the labels. These products form a crust to prevent weeds from germinating without harming your plants. For best results with pre-emergents, first remove all weeds and their roots, spread the product as directed on its label, and water it in for at least a half hour. If the soil is disturbed, reapply the pre-emergent.
Finally, don’t sweat the small stuffMost people don’t have time to keep everything perfect so don’t worry about it. If plants are spaced, watered, and well fed, they will look great. A spent flower or rogue weed can be dealt with on your schedule. n

A spent flower or rogue weed can be dealt with on your schedule. n

LOCAL ARTISANS
If you didn't already know Brittney Kluse, owner and photographer of Brittney Kluse Photography, chances are you may have heard her. A born-and-raised Tri-Citian, Brittney Kluse has always been known for her loud voice, infectious laugh, and most
recently for her stylized lifestyle portraiture work that's sweeping across the region. With her colorful, fresh, and emotion-filled photography style, Kluse specializes in capturing life's candid moments through her lens.
With a life-long love of photography stemming from her father, Kluse's professional pursuit of photography began in 2007. With an entry-level DSLR camera in-hand, she set out to document her and her husband's first year of marriage. In an effort to better learn her camera, she began photographing her friends’ children. Soon after, their friends began inquiring about her photography. That's when something clicked and she decided to make her dream a reality.
For a year, Kluse relentlessly pursued all avenues of learning. From watching YouTube tutorials to reading camera, photography, and post-processing blogs and attending multiple one-on-one workshops with respected photographers in the industry, Kluse poured her heart into developing her passion. During this time, she photographed anything and everything to figure out where her niche was in the market.
"I tend to gravitate towards people and moments that have a balance of raw and quirky elements to them," says Kluse. "I like a good sense of humor and had a desire to photograph life's real moments. I wanted people to be able to relate to the photographs
and see themselves or their own families in them. It was then I knew that I had to capture for people what happens behind the lens in an everyday way: a child's smirky grin after polishing off a sucker, sisters whispering secrets into each other's ears, a Dad's eye roll at his children's silly faces, or a senior girl ‘striking the pose’ from last night's America's Next Top Model.” In 2008, after a year of long, hard work, Brittney Kluse Photography was born.
By the end of 2010, Kluse had 250+ professional photo shoots under her belt. Her degree in marketing from Washington State University also played a pivotal role as she shaped her business identity and role in the marketplace. In 2011, she experienced great creative growth as she honed her colorful, candid, and contemporary style of photography and emerged as one of the community's most sought- after photographers for children, teens, couples, and families. Kluse has a way of bringing the Tri-Cities’ desert climate to life with her
ability to transform colors, textures, and seemingly endless locations from around our area.
With her husband and their two young children, keeping her family first is a priority for Kluse. "These days, it's not uncommon for my clients to see an extra pack of baby wipes and some snacks in a Ziploc container hanging out of my camera bag," jokes Kluse. "I work every day on finding the balance between my family and my passion for my business. I still pinch myself in disbelief when clients are willing to wait two to three months just to get on my schedule so I can take their photographs!"
What's her advice to others contemplating following their passion? "Find a way to get paid for doing what you love. Then every paycheck will be a bonus!"

It’s always nice to see a locally-owned business not only survive, but thrive. Nouveau Day Spa is certainly basking in the
glow of success.
With an exquisite new Tuscan-inspired 9,000 square foot facility that opened in November and an array of treatments to soothe body and soul, Nouveau has found a plethora of Mid-Columbians enjoying their unique brand of upscale pampering.
Nouveau offers a full menu of skin care services, massages, water therapies, nail services, makeup application and even treatments designed just for men, plus several therapies that are unique to the Tri-Cities.
You may enjoy a treatment in the spa’s soaking tub, one of only nine in North America. Owner Kris Waltze says this new technology offers a “facial” for the body by filling the tub’s water with three-to-four billion micro-bubbles infused with oxygen. It’s said to be a virtual fountain of youth that guests rave about.
Another exclusive treatment at Nouveau is the Hydra Facial, as seen on the reality show Beverly Hills Housewives. Thanks to the exposure from the show, many clients have been taking advantage of the treatment, as Nouveau is the only spa in the Tri-Cities with the offering.
With the peak wedding season approaching, Nouveau gets busy with brides who appreciate a day of pampering. Nouveau is adept at catering their services to a bridal party’s wishes. Many groups come in to get their hair, nails, and makeup done prior to the wedding or rehearsal dinner. Waltze says spa staff can grant almost any request to accommodate a group with various desires.
Another favorite treatment is a couple’s massage. Many couples, friends, and mothers and daughters have found they enjoy their pampering a deux in one of the Couple’s Suites, specially designed to treat two guests at once. n

Fidelitas on Red Mountain
Spring brings with it the return of one of the favorite pas-times of Columbia Basin residents – wine tasting. Amidst the abundance of Mid-Columbia wineries stands an icon in the wine-making industry: a multi-award winning label
with an eye-catching, contemporary tasting room located down a humble country road in Benton City.
Fidelitas has become notable for wine enthusiasts across the state, and, more recently, the nation. Located on the slopes of Red Mountain, the tasting room—a modernly-designed aluminum structure—is more often seen in today’s architectural magazines. It fills only a fraction of the countryside surrounding it. Guests come for the array of tasting selections, crafted from regionally-grown grapes hand-selected by owner and wine maker, Charlie Hoppes,
then stay to enjoy the visual splendor – both indoors and out.Tasters will marvel at the stunning simplicity of the mounted
wine inventory inside the tasting room, which creates a striking geometric wall art display. The tasting room is open and airy with floor-to-ceiling windows offering expansive views of the iconic hillside. In these warmer months, guests often opt to take their glasses outside to lounge and mingle with fellow wine fanatics on the patio.
Fidelitas is a must-visit for wine connoisseurs and novices alike. With selections ranging from the refreshingly crisp 2009 Optu White Wine blend to the bold and exhilarating 2008 Boushey Red Wine blend, Fidelitas reflects the superlative tastes of the region in delectable form. – Meagan Hines

MizuSushi
It’s no secret that the Tri-Cities houses a vast selection of cultural cuisines, but Chung Yi,
Seattle native and local resident for 16 years, saw a missing link in the intricate chain of ethnic dining options.
Mizu Sushi is the Tri-Cities’ first high-end Kaiten sushi restaurant. “Kaiten” is the term for what are more commonly referred to as “conveyor belt” sushi establishments. Sushi-goers take their choice of low-priced plates (averaging $2–$4 each) from a revolving selection of dishes on a conveyor belt, which snakes its way through the restaurant. Kaiten sushi restaurants have gained in popularity across the nation, offering an instantaneous resolution to one’s sushi craving.
Conveniently located at Columbia Center Mall, Mizu Sushi is the perfect drop-in spot for the hungry shopper, as well as an easily-accessible location for a famished sushi fan. Diners can opt for items from the constantly rotating selection of fresh menu items, like traditional rolls and simple sashimi, or order to their taste from the chefs creating dishes at the center of the restaurant.
For those who fear raw fish, there’s good news. Many of the pre-made and ready-to-order items are fully cooked or contain no fish at all. It’s a fabulous venue for families, and an exciting location for a romantic rendezvous. In addition to delectable small bites and traditional Japanese and Korean selections, Mizu also offers a full-service bar to complement your meal. n

Visit Mizu Sushi at the Columbia Center mall, next to the east entrance near JC Penney, or call 735-4433 for more information. They’re open weekdays from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and 11:00 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Gluten-Free Diet for a Gut- and Gluteus Maximus-Free World
THE HIGHLIGHT
You may have noticed more and more “gluten-free” labels on products in the food aisle. What started as a diet to treat an al-
lergic reaction might also yield some benefits for those who aren’t gluten-intolerant.
Approximately 1% of the population have a negative reaction to the protein called gluten found in wheat, barley, oats and other cereal-related prod-ucts. And since the cereal group is such a major part of the food groups, food manufacturers have made some products with the gluten removed.
In reality, gluten is indigestible by everyone (much like fiber) and simply passes through the di-gestive system. For those who have Celiac disease, a negative reaction to gluten, the protein causes an internal allergic reaction in their small intestine—the intestine responsible for drawing nutrients out of food. For them, gluten causes a considerable amount of pain and digestive problems, not to mention a tremendous drain on their energy from their bodies trying to process it.
So, how can going gluten-free help the non-
gluten intolerant? Some report finding a boost of energy when they go gluten-free because it keeps their bodies from having to try to process gluten alongside beneficial nutrients. Another benefit has been seen in the fact that gluten is often found in a lot of carbohydrate-heavy foods, which can contrib-ute to weight gain. Theoretically, going gluten-free could increase your energy, cut out carbs and help in reducing your gut and gluteus-buttimus.
If it sounds like going gluten-free can be a drag, the awareness of gluten intolerance is helping expand the range of gluten-free products. A gluten-free diet still allows for consumption of a wide va-riety of meats, vegetables and fruits, but do check labels for processed versions. Additionally, when a gluten-intolerant person might not be able to drink wheat- or malt-based beers, oddly enough, grain alcohol is still an acceptable option as the filtering process gets rid of the gluten. Anyone attempting a gluten-free diet should always get advice from their doctor first.
