Because you only get one chance to make a first impression...

The diagram above was drawn by a Key Stage 3 student, who was responding to a task to draw the perfect geographer.

Aims

This activity will help to identify and draw out the skills that a geographer will hopefully have by the time they finish school which will be helpful in the job market. This would also include some of the knowledge that they could be expected to have to help with an understanding of the world, and the decisions that need to be made about appropriate careers which might have longevity and be more fulfilling.

The Activity

This is a GROUP activity.

Set the context by showing the image and explain how it came about.

Instructions to students:

With your group, identify the particular skills that you think will help you get a job, and make them stand out from all the other candidates.

What do you think makes the difference when it comes to applying for a job?

What do you think makes the difference in the interview process?

Brainstorm these and produce a diagram on an A3 piece of paper.

The final task is to reproduce a similar diagram to the original stimulus image, but which describes the perfect job candidate.
