What is a “governor”?

•  The governor is a chief executive of the state –  Central figure of

state politics –  National known

•  Current Governor = Tom Corbett

What is the history of the governorship in Pennsylvania?

•  Originally, the governorship was controlled by the Penn Family –  William Penn –  John Penn –  Thomas Penn

•  During the American Revolution, the governorship was weakened under the Constitution of 1776

When did the governorship become what it is today?

•  The Constitution of 1790 created the modern-day office of governor –  Amended slightly

over the years

•  Created to be more in line with our national Constitution

•  Pennsylvania has some of most relaxed formal governor requirements in the US

•  Requirements: –  30+ years old –  Citizen of the US –  Lived in PA for 7+ years –  Hold no other public

service jobs in the state

•  Pennsylvania also has many informal requirements for governor: –  Race –  Sex –  Religion –  Name Recognition –  Party Identity –  Political Experience

What are the terms of office for a PA governor?

•  Under the state Constitution, a governor may serve two (2) terms –  Four (4) years

•  Candidates are re-eligible after four (4) years
