If you are a regular reader of the‘Advertiser’ you will remember myApril article, drawingattention to our fritillary walkson our National Nature Reserveon the outskirts of WheatonAston. These have successfullytaken place and were very wellsupported by the local and widercommunity. I now want to drawyour attention to our other mainevent, our HAY FESTIVAL onSaturday 20th June, to which youare cordially invited.
The previous article outlined whythe Nature Reserve is so importantnationally and internationally. It isrun by Natural England (and hasbeen since the 60’s) and is not onlyan SSSI (Site of Special ScientificInterest) but is also protected byEuropean law as a SAC(Special Area of Conservation) It hasbeen described by the FloodplainMeadows Partnership (OpenUniversity sponsored) as one ofthe five most important lowlandfloodplain meadows sites in theUK - 95% of these have alreadydisappeared, so what we have here,is a very rare survival from medievaltimes. It is also the most northerlyhabitat for the nationally rare andstunningly beautiful snakesheadfritillary, still growing in the wild.
Although the fritillary walks havenow taken place, you STILLhave the opportunity to view themeadows at their most spectacular. This is because after the fritillariesfade, they are succeeded by thetraditional flowers, that those whoare fortunate to have lived in thecountryside, remember so well -ladysmocks and marsh marigoldswhich dominate for a while, beforedisappearing amongst the taller
growth that will become thesummer haycrop. By mid June themeadows reveal their full glorywith a sea of dark crimson headsof the great burnet, rising aboveragged robin, knapweed, and otherhay meadow specialities such asorchids, pepper saxifrage, meadowrue, meadow thistle and saw wort. This, in turn, will provide the sweet-tasting hay for which the meadowswere and still are famous. Whenhorses were the main method oftransport, their owners were keento feed them the very best WheatonAston hay and this continues tothis day, as it still provides fodderfor horses, including local policehorses.
As I stated at the beginning of thisarticle, you will have the opportunityto participate in guided walks intothe meadows on June 20th, thesebeing led by Natural England’ssenior reserves manager, Mel Brownand an expert botanist.Theseactivities will form a part of ourHay Festival event (to be held onJune 20th, 12pm-5pm) on Weate’sMeadow. Entry is free and you canpark at St Mary’s school, WheatonAston, where you can take the free
tractor ride from the school or walk(follow the arrows!).
We had 600 plus visitors last yearand this years’ event will be evenbigger and better! As well as thewalks into the meadow (£3 perperson, children free and free if youbecome a member of FOMM, seedetails below), we have numerousactivities including wildlife displays(bats, hedgehog rescue, beekeeping) birds of prey, ferret racingand the opportunity to get ’closeand personal’ with the ferrets andlearn more about them, scythingdisplays, plant stall, pony rides, coconut shy and other stalls, cakesand other refreshments, raffle, sensory trails and much more.
Please note, entry onto the reserveis only usually allowed through theguided walks, this is to protectground nesting birds and to protectfarmers’ stock. If a permit isrequired, it can be obtained fromsite manager Mel Brown. There is apermissive path mown that you canfollow between the end of June andthe end of August.Dogs on leads please.

Your Voice Your ChoiceWolgarston High SchoolOn Thursday 7th May, OurLibrary held its own MockGeneral Election. It wastransformed into our very ownpolling station for the day.Students and staff wereencouraged to come downand vote before school, duringbreak time and lunch time.
Throughout the day we helddiscussions and activitiesengaging students to talk aboutwith each other about what theythink of UK politics and how itaffects them. “Politics is howwe run our country which is ademocracy and the parties areLabour, Green Party, UKIP,Conservatives and LiberalDemocrats,” said Katie Higham(Year 9 Student).
At tutor time some of our Year10 and Year 9 students took partin a debate of whom they wouldvote for and why other peopleshould vote for them. “It wasbrilliant to see all of the studentsdiscussing what they thoughtabout politics. They had reallyinteresting and varied ideasabout politics and the differentvoting options,” said MissBallance (Second in English).
“Our current Prime minister isDavid Cameron, I can relate tothe conservatives, if you electsomeone else it means the lastfive years would be wasted,” saidJake Parker (Year 10). “It wasbrilliant to engage the studentsin politics as they will be votersin up and coming years and with
voters 18 to 25 turnout beinglow it is important for them tounderstand and experience theprocess,” said Miss Edwards(Inclusion Manager, Teacher ofPE and English).
At precisely 2pm the pollingstation closed in our Library andthe votes were counted by MissRoberts (Learning ResourcesCentre Administrator).
“It was so much fun transformingOur Library into a polling stationand being part of the GeneralElection in our own way, I wouldlike to thank all students andmembers of staff who have takenpart, together we will able to seethe similarities and differences weshare as individuals and as wellas a country,” said Miss Roberts.
2015 will be the 9th year of The Bishops Wood BeerFestival. The 2014 festival was a huge success, themost popular so far.
Every last drop of cider was drunk, all the bitter wasnecked. That’s not bad when you consider there wasover 30 different beers and ciders! There was just a fewdrops left of the darker ales when the door closed, lateon the Sunday afternoon.
The festival is run by enthusiastic volunteers who tryto make improvements year on year. All the beers andciders are tasted before being selected, absolutely nothing is left to chance. Nobody likes adodgy drink, the staff included - so they don't just orderin any old stuff.
This years festival will have over 30 beers and cidersand will see lots of live bands over the weekend, one onthe Friday night, “Bishops Woodstock” featuring PlanetRock. Three acoustic shows on the Saturday afternoon,“All Acoustic Sixties”, “Beatles Tribute” and “Old RedEyes” (Old Red Eyes is a Housemartins/Beautiful South/Paul Heaton tribute). There will also be another full liveband on the Saturday night, “FATMAN ALLEY” playinglocal favourites and well known party and rock anthems.
The will also be extra choices of cider this year, well,at least a couple extra...maybe more! One cider thatwill be available is called “Happy Hour” and Mr PaulHeaton himself (the one and only ex-lead vocals ofHousemartins & Beautiful South) has sent a message tosay he is only too pleased to give Bishops Wood BeerFestival and “HAPPY HOUR CIDER” his blessing.
There will also be plenty of bottles available - with manyoptions to choose from.
The price will be four beer tokens for £6. You can useyour tokens on any day over the weekend, so if youhave a couple left in your pocket... Just pop back anduse them the next day!
Don't forget to check the website for regular updates. For the latest news and updates on this years beerfestival visit, www.bishopswoodbeerfestival.co.uk
