THE PAWLEYS PRESBYTERIAN
MAY 2012
As a part of the Body of Christ, our vision is to glorify God,
make disciples, and send them to meet human needs in a broken world.
THANKS MIKE!!!
May the Grace of God be with you!
I want to take this time to offer my personal
thanks and appreciation to Mike Berry who has been

This is my “sign off” edition of “THE BERRY PATCH.” It has been a treat serving
all of you over these past 17 months as Interim Director of Administration. We have accomplished many good things and set operational systems in place that will serve the church for years to come. We have evaluated all of the financial procedures, contracted with an ac-counting firm, and put accountability and transparency systems in place that many of you had requested when I first came to this job. With the help of a committee of volunteers headed up by Virginia Brad-
shaw, policy manuals have been prepared for the basic operations of the church. We have reworked and solidified the Wedding Policy, the Building and Grounds Use Policy, a Child Protection Policy, and PIPC Policies and Procedures. These are essential for our protection against liability and necessary for under-standing between the parties in these areas. We have worked hard with the Building and Grounds committee to manage the heating and cool-ing system more efficiently. This is an on-going challenge. I would love to tell you that this task is all done. It is not. However, the committee and the engineers are working to make it more revenue friendly and to ensure groups that their meeting space will be cold or hot depending on need and season. We have coordinated contract musicians during our interim period to ensure no shortfall in our musical program. That is such an integral part of our worship experience. We have also worked on the worship service and several very positive changes have been made. The service has a very comfortable flow and provides a beautiful worship experience. It is also good to see the acolyte bring the “light of Christ” into the worship at the beginning and to lead the congregation out of worship preceded by the light at the end of the service. (Just one of the additions.)
In just a couple of weeks we will dedicate a sacristy. This is a special room off the sanctuary that is designed for the preparation of the elements for communion. Since the building was built, the ladies who have prepared the elements have had to carry them up a flight of stairs to clean, fill, and empty the communion trays. We are now following tradition that the excess “wine” is poured on the ground (the “blood of Jesus flowed down to the ground”) and the excess bread is given to the children in worship to take home and feed to the birds. Sunday school continues to be a great joy and spiritual reward. I am also thankful to Frank for having allowed me to share in the preaching duties. I must confess that I will miss the preaching opportu-nities. Thank you for allowing me to enjoy this role for these months that have absolutely flown by. I pray and have prayed that the Lord was honored in the work that I did here and that He will continue to bless it. There is much left to do here at PIPC. With shoulders together, hearts united, and minds open to His leading, everyone will be amazed what God can do. Pray for our church and our Pastors. Pray for de-cisions that have been made and will be made that they will glorify God, grow the kingdom, bring souls to Christ, and show the world we are Christians by our love.

SOMETHING’S IN THE AIR!!!
Picture yourself in the air! You’re flying, sur-rounded by endless blue sky and puffy white clouds, looking down on the world below. Wel-come to SKY VBS, where everything is possible with God! This year’s VBS will help kids (and adults) explore God’s boundless love for His chil-dren. During this important week children will discover that no matter who you are, no matter how you feel, no matter what people do, no mat-ter what happens, no matter where you are, TRUST GOD!
It’s hard to believe, but it’s almost time for an-other exciting VBS! Vacation Bible School will be held the week of June 11th through June 15th. The theme and director have been chosen and most of the station leaders are in place so what do we need now? VOLUNTEERS! There are so many ways that you can help with VBS-painting sets, donating needed items, praying, leading children from station to station-the list goes on and on… If you would like to volunteer in ANY way, please call me at 237-4581, Ext 29 or on my cell (359-4111) and let me know. Take this opportunity to be blessed and to be a blessing to the children of PIPC and beyond!!! PLEASE CALL!

J.O.Y. SCHOOL
NEEDS YOU!
Each year PIPC feeds the
children and volunteers of
Joy School for one week
during their program. This
year we will be serving
lunch during the week of July 23rd through July
27th and we need volunteers to help with this very
special mission of PIPC. Each day a group of three
or four women will prepare and serve lunch for
approximately 80 people. If you would be willing
to be a part of this most important ministry, please
call Julia at 237-4581, Ext 29 and leave a message.
So little will mean so much to a very deserving
group of people, so call Julia before she calls you!
PASSES TO BROOKGREEN
It’s time to open those desk
drawers, clean out those envelopes
and do a little searching because
we are asking again for passes to
Brookgreen Gardens so that the
children of PIPC will be able to vis-
it this most wonderful place. Each
year the members of PIPC are so
incredibly generous and each year the children
enjoy your generosity. If you have any passes
that you can donate to the children, please
bring them to the church and give them to
Julia, slide them under her office door, or give
them to Tina. Thanks again for always being so
generous with the children of PIPC!

May is Bible Bookworm Celebration Month!
Keep a lookout for an upcoming announcement of our Bible Book-
worm Celebration. The children of PIPC have been diligently reading, and we
look forward to celebrating their accomplishments!
“When I’m Calling You Oo-oo-oo”
It won’t be Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy calling, but a library volunteer checking to see if
you are still actively using the book(s) you checked out. If so, the volunteer will update the pocket card
with a new return date. Otherwise, please return the book(s) to the basket on the library desk for pro-
cessing and reshelving so that they can be available for others to check out. Thank you!

The Presbyterian Wom-
en’s Board will meet on Mon-
day, May 7th, at 10:00 AM in the
parlor.
The Tuesday Circle will
meet on May 8th at 11:30 AM at
Hazel Winstead’s home. This
will be a salad luncheon. Please
contact Hazel at 237-9205 for
more information.
The Deborah Circle will meet on Monday,
May 14th, at 10:00 AM at the home of Barbara
Neely.
The Spiritual Lights Circle will be meeting
at 5:30 PM on May 17th to go to Morningside. For
more information, contact Julia at 359-4111 or Liz
Williamson at 237-8998.
The PIPC “Merry Hearts” fellowship group will be traveling in May on a “three
hour tour,” (hopefully not like Gilligan) with Capt. Rod of Lowcountry Tours in
Georgetown.
Mark your calendars! We will be departing from the Georgetown harbor (near
the clock tower) at 1 pm on Thursday May 24th and will return about 4:30 pm. We will
be traveling first to see the Barnard Baruch residence in Hobcaw Barony from the water-
side and will then cross Winyah Bay and travel down the “western cut” to see additional
plantations and hopefully alligators, eagles and dolphins. Then it’s on to the
Georgetown Lighthouse for a history lesson, a story or two and photographs. We return
to Georgetown via the commercial shipping channel and hear the story of the Harvest
Moon. Of course, Capt. Rod will provide plenty of historical information all along our
route, and some not so historical information “stories” as well. Our boat is equipped
with water, soft drinks, snacks and a restroom.
This is our third or fourth outing with Capt. Rod and all have been highly successful and often the
highlight of our yearly activities. If you would like to attend, you must RSVP to Hazel Winstead at 237-
9205 or Carolyn Dewell at 235-3087 NLT Thursday May 17th. Payment arrangements must also be made
prior to the RSVP deadline. Cost will be $25 per person. We suggest that you make your own individual
lunch arrangements, if desired, as there are no group luncheon plans being arranged.
Camp Pee Dee News It seems hard to believe, but it’s time to start finalizing plans for your child(ren)’s summer activities. Hopefully one of the activities you’re planning for
your child(ren) will be a session at Camp Pee Dee. This Presbyterian camp, located near Bennettsville, S.C., has many different sessions so that they can hopefully meet the needs of children from the 1st grade through the 12th grade. Some of the options are: Mini, Seedling, Horse Ex-plorer, Horse Adventure, Bike Hiker, Paddles Up, Finding God in Nature, Sports, and they even offer a Music, Art, and Drama session. I have brochures and applications in my office and will be mailing them this week. Remember-PIPC will pay 40% of the cost for the children of the mem-bers of the church so make plans now for your child(ren) to have a wonderful experience at Camp Pee Dee!
Pastor Frank and Mike Berry are leading a topical Bible study focusing
on a different topic each week! Join them each Wednesday evening at 6:00
PM. Everyone is invited to attend.
On Wednesday, May 30th, we will have a Wonderful Wednesday Celebration
with lots of good food and a sing-a-long!!
If you would like to join us for supper at 5:00 PM and are not on the
“Standing List,” please sign up on the Reservation Card in the pew racks or call
the church office (237-4581) by Monday at noon.
Take a moment to acknowledge those who have a birthday or anniversary this month. If your birthday/anniversary is not listed in your month, please contact Tina at the church office at 237-4581 (ext. 21).
