"Today’s readings proclaim the endless mercy and forgiveness of God.
Throughout his public ministry, Jesus was intent on showing mercy. He forgave the sins of the woman who, in tears, kissed his feet, as in Luke
7. He forgave the paralyzed man brought to him on the stretcher and the woman caught in adultery. He mingled with tax collectors, prostitutes,
and other sinners who were rejected by Jewish leaders and society. He even forgave his enemies from the cross, saying “Father, forgive them,
for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)
Since his election, Pope Francis has identified himself as sinner and asked people to pray for him. Pope Francis always preaches mercy, but
more importantly, he practices it. It was reported by the news that Pope Francis had visited prisons, washed the feet of men, women, Catholics
and non-Catholics on Holy Thursday, ate lunch with the homeless when he visited the US.
