A SURPRISING FIND

Could this be your family?

John DeWalt, a long time member of the Richland County Chapter of The OhioGenealogcal Society, has brought us copies of several letters that were found inthe house of John W. and Cathrine Darby Leppo.

John Leppo married Catherine Darby in 1876.Catharine was a daughter of John O. Cd 1886) andine 28 acres of land in 1880.

These letters were addressed to brother and sister and probably were toCatherine's parents.

Samuel DeWalt purchased a 96 acre farm in 1910 that had been owned by JohnO. Darby, and later the 28 acres owned by Leppo.

He has pictures of the Lorenzo B. Darby family and Franklin E. Darby familywho he believes went to Williams Co., Ohio.

Please contact John if this is your family.- John DeWalt, 2771 Rock Road, Rt. #2, Shelby OH 44875

The IGI File from LDS

The Associated Press reports that Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, hasbought the complete International Genealogical Index (IGI) from Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints (LDS) in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gary Arnold, head of research at the Ohio Historical Society Library inColumbus, said the IGI* is a standard reference for genealogists and contains6,700 state-of-the-art microfiche. The index to births, deaths and marriagesfrom about 1500 to 1870 covers records that have been extracted and submitted tothe LDS Genealogical Department.

Arnold said the purchase of IGI means that large numbers of researchers cancheck many names in a short time there.

* The OHIO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY has the IGI File for North America.

NOTE: Foreign birthplaces are often found in the obituaries of those who camehere in the middle and late 1800's. When doi~g newspaper research for obituariesthe earlier the date of the paper (weekly and semi-weekly papers) more weeksfollowing the death must be researched. After daily papers came into being inthe latter part of the last century, it became possible to find obits the sameday as the death, or a very short time later. If you cannot find a death forsomeone in the outlying areas of the county, search the papers in the adjoiningcounties. The best collection of newspapers in Ohio is at The Ohio HistoricalSociety Library in Columbus. They have card indices for both area and timeperiod. You will find a day at the Historical Society well spent. Ed.Richland County Chapter of The Ohio Genealogical Society Oct. - Dec. 1987

VERY EARLY RICHLAND COUNTY, OHIO RECORDS

In the Ohio Historical Society Manuscript Collection there are a number ofrecords of great interest to Richland County. One of the most interesting isthe record of the Eben P. Sturges Family. (MSS 539) These consist of a numberof boxes and folders of original papers which included the DAYBOOK that was usedin that old store from October 1815 to July 1817.

Mr. Sturges owned one of the earliest stores in Mansfield. The store stoodon the square at Main Street, where Reed's is located today. Several years ago,Maxine Kinton and Mary Jane Henney had the book microfilmed and placed it in theMansfield Richland Public Library. The film was indexed by Maxine Kinton andit is in the Sherman Room. This record will help place your ancestors in thisarea before 1820. NOTE additional names at the end of the list.

DEPOSITIONS

In some court cases in each court in our system there are depositions to befound. A deposition is written testimony taken on oath and can be taken in anypart of the country where the witness may live. If you have never checked theCommon Pleas, Chancery, Law Records or Probate Journals in Ohio to see if yourancestor was eve~ for any reason, involved in any kind of a law suit, it may payyou to do so. Cash money in those days was scarce and if a debt came due aperson might not have the cash to pay - such a suit was an amicable suit, theywere the most common law suits. Others might be surveyor errors, slander, bastardy, criminal, etc. Here is one Richland Co. suit that gave much genealogicalinformation in the depositions that were taken.

James HolgateSylvina HolgateElizabeth SlocumMarcia Trucks

vsWilliam Trucks

The case involved the selling of land in northern Richland County. Wm. Trucks Sr. had died and his estatewas to be settled. These are some of the facts givenin various depositions. The written case has 18 different items.

Lydia Trucks, widowSylvina Holgate was Sylvina Trucks.Marcia Trucks was from Luzerne Co., PA, as were the Holgates.Heirs of Wm. Trucks Sr. were: Wm. Trucks; Elizabeth Trucks m. Slocum; LuraTrucks m. Levy Vanfossen; Sophia Trucks m. Alvie N. Lewis; Lydia, Junior; JuliaTrucks, Huron Co., OH; Lucy Ann, George, Clarissa, John, Emily, Porter A. andCharles Trucks, all minors and living in Luzerne Co., PA.

Among other depositions, the following had'this genealogical information:Lydia Brown said she was the wlo Henry Brown.John Bowman, of Luzerne Co. PA said Wm. Trucks Sr. left for Ohio in July or

August 1815.Lucretia Bowman said Lucy Ann was 2 and 1/2 yrs. when the family left PA.James Cummings mentions his parents, Wm. and Leah Cummings and said he will
