–Psalm 20:4

As I sit down to write this article, we are putting the final touches on our Les-sons and Carol’s Service and our Christmas Eve Service. I feel we have been tru-ly blessed this past year at Park Church with the rich programming, the dedica-tion of our Deacons and Elders, and a committed Presbyterian Woman’s group. To top it off we have several committees who have worked diligently to make this past year a success. Thank you to all who have participated. While we hoped to have more progress regarding the building issues by this time, we are still in the waiting game concerning our legal council and contin-ued dialog with the insurance company. We hope to hear from them any day now regarding our resubmitted claim and the moment we do, the work will begin. Thank you for your continued patience! 2020 is fast approaching and we are planning another successful year ahead of us. As you know we finished round one of the Matthew 25 initiative and we plan to move forward with the second phase of the initiative in the early part of next year. This is exciting as we will be able to put our creative thoughts and ideas into motion. We hope that you will join in these activities. Last week I was shocked to receive an email stating that it was time to order our Lenten supplies, since Lent begins on February 26, 2020. It hardly seems possible that it is time to order supplies already, when we haven’t even gotten through the Christmas Holiday Season. Time continues to move quickly. Moving forward, I’m planning to do a couple of book studies in 2020. Presbyterian Women The Presbyterian Women’s Luncheon Circle will meet Monday, January 13 at noon, in the downstairs dining room. Bring something to share at the table (or $2 for the basket!) and join us for a brief devotional, prayer and enjoyable fel-lowship. Mary Cree and Ginny Bodine will host and provide beverages and dessert. You are invited to bring a can or two to add to the “Little Red Wagon”. Monthly luncheons are a great way to get to know our ladies at church! We enjoy our time together and we look forward to having you join us! The next PW Coordinating Team (CT) meeting will be immediately following the luncheon, January 13. Our primary task will be planning the 2020 PW budget. Please stay for the meeting if you are able! The PW Bible Study Love Carved in Stone will meet in the new year on the first & third Wednesdays at noon at church. (January 1st the group will not meet.) Christine Stephens is leading this study. This is a friendly, welcoming group—no prior Bible Study experience is required! Feel free to drop in and give it a try! Mark your calendars for Friday evening, January 24, when Presbyterian Wom-en will host a community-wide dinner, we’re calling an “Irish Dinner with a Scottish Twist” in the basement dining room, serving from 4:30pm until 6pm. The main course will be Natalie’s tasty recipe for Shepherd’s Pie with plenty of fixings, including apple desserts. We’re hoping you and your friends will join us to bring some warmth and good cheer to a cold winter’s night! Tickets are $10 and may be purchased starting January 6 in the church office (or reserved by phone 315-331-2255), or during the coffee hour January 12 & 19. Tickets will also be available at the door until 6pm (or until sold out). Calling all our helpers to make this dinner a success! Please let Natalie Lem-mon or Mary Cree know your availability to work in the kitchen, to be a server, and/or to donate an apple dessert. (The profits of the dinner will support PW’s missions and the Park Church General Fund.) Thank you to our church family for your ongoing support of Park’s Presbyterian Women and our purpose to nurture our faith, support the mission of the church worldwide, work for justice and peace, and build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the PC(USA) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.

Family Promise Update As the first year of Family Promise of Wayne County draws to a close and we prepare to greet a new year we hope we will all reflect on the impact the pro-gram has had for 27 homeless children and their families here in Wayne County. Praise for the efforts of Park Church and the Newark Community volunteers who have supported and hosted as these families worked with staff at the Day Center to find affordable housing, sustainable employment, and restored dignity and stability in their lives. Thank you all!

There is much on the horizon for us! Joyfully, we share the news that we are near to having our own Day Resource Center. We are purchasing the rectory building which sits behind St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Lyons. It will provide for flexible and expanded space and give us a “home of our own.” A newly formed Facilities Committee is seeking volunteers with electric, plumbing, and drywall experience. Also, come January, volunteers will be needed to lend their help during work days… painting, go-fers, and other various unskilled work. Please contact Bob Hegemen, ([email protected]) at 585-202-0398if you have interest and availability to help out in any of these ways.

Recently we learned we will again be supported by a Bullis Fund Grant and a Matching Grant. We cannot thank them enough for recognizing the im-portance of our program in helping all children to grow up in a home of their own. We are also the recipient of another Boeheim Award and our Family Prom-ise Giving Day in October raised about $11,000.

If you can see yourself becoming a part of the good work going on through Family Promise please reach out to me, Anne rogers or to Park’s other coordinator, Carol Thurston. There are many ways to volunteer, or to donate money or supplies. -Anne Rogers, Family Promise Coordinator

The Newark Food Closet thanks us for the gener-ous donations like the one pictured below from the Red Wagon Mission in December, but reminds us all that there is a year round need for food. They are especially in need of: • Canned corn • Canned spinach • Peas • mandarin oranges • Pineapple • Applesauce • cranberry sauce • Strawberry & grape

Jelly • Small Boxes of jello • Small boxes of

pudding • chicken soup • boxed spaghetti

(rotini, elbow) • chicken breast • spaghettio's, raviolis

etc. • bottles of juice

December was a busy time, as usual, in the life of the church. Read on to see what we’ve been up to! Movie Night on the evening of December 6 was a treat because we encour-aged passengers to wear pajamas for their train ride to the North Pole. Pop-corn was served, as guests boarded, and then they were treated to cookies, cocoa, and mulled cider. Near the end of the movie, the 1st Christmas bell was presented to children who attended, to take home with them. It was a magical evening and a lot of fun! Special thanks to J. for advertising, making the flyers, and setting up for the event. We also appreciated the help from Pastor Chris-topher and Ron, who also made train tickets, and Carol Thurston for preparing the “first bells of Christmas”. Advent Family Night was rescheduled to Sunday, December 8th, directly after church, due to the inclement weather the previous Sunday. We thank Paul Salisbury for setting up the tree and Carol Thurston, who put a lot of thought and planning into having many creative decorations for us to make, to adorn the dining room tree. We also appreciate all of the cut- out cookies that Karen Watson made for us to frost and enjoy. We then shared a meal of soups, bread, veggies, fruits, and desserts in the dining room. The team appreciates all of you who brought food and the many hands that helped us clean up. It was a very pleasant afternoon spent with good people! Our trip to Warfields’ Restaurant on December 10th was well attended by about 25 people. We were all pleased with our lunches and enjoyed the gin-gerbread cookie smashing tale that Bill Doebler told us about. We then trav-elled to the Mormon Visitors’ Center to view their display of creches from around the world. We thank Bill for organizing this event and for also providing drawings for some festive gifts! Upcoming Events: Friday, January 10th, Free Family Movie Night at Park Church at 6:30 p.m.-Come and bring your friends to view a movie about a penguin who was born being unable to sing like the other Emperor penguins. He does, however, pos-sess an unusual talent for being able to tap dance with magical expression. Popcorn and hot chocolate will be served. If you wish to be comfy in your pa-jamas, feel free! Friday, January 17th Potluck and Game Night on 17 at 5:30 p.m.-Dishes to share are welcome or monetary donations may be made to help cover the cost

for Sunday; Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church,” by the late Rachel Held Ev-ans and “The Cost of Discipleship,” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. If you have other books that you would like to have considered, please let me know! The annual meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 26, 2020. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending. Elections of new officers for both the Deacons and Elders boards will take place at this meeting. We are wrapping up with the stewardship drive. Thank you to all who pledged. We are forever grateful to receive pledging and all the funding that comes into the church. In a time, where many churches rely on their endowments to meet their budgets every pledged dollar we get is received with gratitude for the blessings that God has bestowed upon us. Lastly, I want to say a special thank you to all the leaders of this church who give of their time, talents and treasures. Your work and dedication in 2019 was greatly appreciated and without you, the church wouldn’t continue to exist and run so smoothly. Thanks again teams! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and that you have continued blessing in the New Year! Peace and Grace- Rev Christopher
