Living Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish
who aspire to greatness by humbly serving the needs of
all, especially through our various parish ministries.
Diocesan
Reconciliation Monday
All churches throughout the diocese
will be open for reconciliation
Please note: there will be no
7:30 p.m. Mass at St. Agnes that evening
Abstinence and Fasting
All Catholics who have reached their
14th birthday are bound to abstain
entirely from meat on Ash
Wednesday and all the Fridays of
Lent. All Catholics between the
ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to observe
the laws of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday. Fasting means limiting oneself to a single
full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two
other light meals, which together do not equal a full
meal, may be taken during the day.
Please see the Easter Schedule on
Page 5 for Good Friday Services.
Good Friday Collection
On Good Friday, our parish will take up the annual
Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. Each
day, the news reminds us of the violence and
instability plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely
hear of the shrinking Christian community there, a
community that struggles to remain in the land of
Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. Please help
support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land
by giving to the Good Friday Collection. This
Pontifical Collection allows the Franciscans and
others to continue caring for Christianity’s holiest
sites and for God’s people in the Holy Land. Please
be generous.

6 April 9, 2017
From the Rector —
Sunday April 9, 2017
Dear Parish Family:
Today, Palm Sunday, begins the greatest week of our Church Year – Holy Week. On Monday from 3:00 p.m.
to 9:00 p.m. Catholic Churches in the New York metropolitan area will be offering the opportunity to receive the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. On Thursday morning, priests and the faithful will gather at 11:00 a.m. for the
Chrism Mass. Bishop Barres will bless the Oils of the Sick and Catechumen and consecrate the Chrism that will
be used by parishes in our diocese throughout the coming year. It will also be the opportunity for priests in our
diocese to renew their call to the priesthood. Everyone is welcome to attend this Mass.
With our Mass on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. the church begins a time of prayer and fasting, a time of keeping
watch. The washing of the feet (mandatum) is a direct expression of our service to one another and the world
through the Eucharistic banquet itself. At the end of Thursday evening’s Liturgy of the Lord’s Supper, the
Eucharist is brought, in procession, to an Altar of Repose that is set up in the Msgr. Kelly Parish Center. All
those at the liturgy are invited to be part of this procession. The Center will be open until midnight for people to
spend some time in silent and prolonged adoration of the wondrous sacrament that Christ instituted on the
First Holy Thursday.
On Good Friday, the Mass is not celebrated. We gather at 3:00 p.m. (repeated again at 8:00 p.m.) to hear the
passion proclaimed, adore the cross and receive Holy Communion that was consecrated the day before.
Although the cross is carried in most of our processions at Mass, it rarely receives the attention we give it at the
Good Friday Service. We are especially mindful on this day that it was by the cross that Jesus redeemed the
world. During the 3:00 p.m. service, we will silently adore the cross that has been placed at the steps of the
sanctuary; at the end of this liturgy people will have the opportunity to individually venerate this cross.
The church gathers after sundown on Saturday (8:00 p.m.) to keep vigil and celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection.
Because it is a different liturgy from all other days during the year, the vigil liturgy is not celebrated at 5:00 p.m.
like our other vigil Masses. This service begins in total darkness with the lighting of the Easter candle and soon
darkness is no more. We sing, we pray, and we recount the stories of salvation history. New members
(who have been preparing a long time for this night) are baptized and the sacraments of initiation are celebrated.
Together we celebrate the first Eucharist of the Easter season.
There is sung Morning Prayer on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. These liturgies last about
30 minutes and focus on the Old Testament Psalms and canticles.
I encourage you to take time this coming week to enter into the celebration of the Pascal Mystery-the dying and
rising of Jesus. It will be a week for us to grow in God’s love for us as well as our gratitude and love of God
who “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance,
he humbled himself becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:7-8).
In the Peace and Love of Christ,
Father Bill

Joining the
Catholic Church
Each year on Holy Saturday during
the Easter Vigil, thousands of men
and women throughout the world
are received into the Catholic
Church. Parishes welcome and prepare these new
members through the Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (RCIA). RCIA is a formation program to help
non-Catholics understand and experience the teachings
and practices of the Catholic Church. This year we
have seven people who will be receiving their Baptism,
Confirmation and First Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.
At the vigil of Pentecost on June 3rd, a number of
baptized Christians will be received into the Catholic
Church and some baptized Catholics will complete
their initiation by receiving Confirmation. New
inquirers are invited to join in the process at any time
to prepare to receive their sacraments in 2018. It is
usually a one year process for those needing baptism,
but it could be shorter for those coming to the faith
from another Christian community. We meet on
Sundays at the 11:00 a.m. Mass and after until about
1:15 p.m. If you or someone you know might be
interested please call the Religious Education Office at
(516) 678-2306.
We are Looking for New
R.C.I.A. Team Members We have been so blessed here at St. Agnes by the
generosity of those parishioners who have devoted
their time to being an RCIA team member. The job
description is pretty simple: show up (as often as
possible) to our weekly Sunday meetings and be open
to making new friends in Christ. You don’t need to be
a theologian or “super holy”. You do have to be
someone who is practicing the faith and who is open to
sharing your experiences of being a Catholic Christian
in a small group setting. Some team members lead the
candidates in reflecting on the readings of Mass.
Others are catechists who teach a lesson once every
few weeks. Others just share their own journey, help
with refreshments, or serve as sponsors. Many have
found it to be a rewarding experience, not only because
of the relationships that are formed but because they
get to renew their own understanding of why they are
so blessed to be Catholic. This process is a spiritual
renewal for all involved. If you are interested in
joining the team, please call Dr. Jo-Ann Metzdorff at
(516) 678-2306 for more information.
Faith Direct
The Lord is risen! As Christ’s disciples, we are called to
go forth and spread the good news of His Resurrection.
Our parish’s many ministries are examples of how
many of you answer that call. Our ministries require not
only gifts of time and talent, but also of financial help.
Please prayerfully consider supporting the Parish of St.
Agnes Cathedral with electronic donations through
Faith Direct. You can sign up online by visiting
www.faithdirect.net using our church code: NY239.
Thank you for your continued support of our parish
12. What can be done to encourage people to come to Mass more often? If you do not regularly attend Mass, what could be done to help you come to Mass more often?
13. The goal of worship is full, active participation at mass. Please include comments and suggestions concerning aspects of worship at St. Agnes Cathedral.
