Please be generous in supporting all the good works carried out by the Church throughout South Eastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands Revisiting the Resurrection: While the baskets are likely now void of any chocolate eggs and Easter has probably been put away for another year in many households, it should not be that way with us. We who are disciples of Jesus are only on the 8th of the Easter season’s 50 days and our task in these days is to keep revisiting the resurrection so as to be more and more deeply convinced of its truth. St. Paul tells us that if Christ has not been raised from the dead then we are the most piti- able of people and how true that would be, for there would be no hope of anything beyond life as we now know it in the present world. Yet Christ was raised from the dead, and not merely in a spiritual sense but as the biblical accounts make clear, Jesus was raised bodily. As we contemplate the resurrection appear- ances we discern something more of what this means, because any who knew Jesus before his crucifixion are very capable of recognizing him after his resurrection. What seems different about Jesus is that he is no longer limited by the laws of the material world, thus walls and locked doors are no obstacle to his appearing before his disciples in the Upper Room. In today’s account, Jesus shows the wounds of his crucifixion to Thomas and in- vites him to inspect them and assures him and the other disciples that he is not a ghost and they will be convinced of that when he eats and drinks with them again. While there is much on You Tube that is questionable, there is a presentation by N.T. Wright, an Anglican scholar, Did Jesus Really Rise From the Dead?, and another by Gary Habermas, The Resurrection Argument that Changed a Generation of Scholars, which are well worth watching. Also highly recommended for its entertainment value and its schol- arship is A Remarkable Relic of the Resurrection, a presentation by scientist Fr. Robert Spitzer, S. J. on the Shroud of Turin. As a picture is worth a thousand words these presenta- tions are worth hours of research and study as they reveal to us what we need to know in order to be more deeply convinced of the truth about this essential and central belief of our Christian faith which we take 50 days to celebrate. 50 Years of Priesthood: This weekend we join with Fr. Thomas Wyndham in the celebra- tion of 50 years of priestly life and service. Certainly much has changed since 1969 in the world and in the Church itself from the then immediate aftermath of the Second Vatican Council to our more recent experience of scandal that has tarnished the image of the priesthood; yet through it all, Fr. Tom has remained faithful to his promises and to God’s people and that is worth noting and celebrating. So, please remember to congratulate Fr. Tom and to thank him for his priestly service at the altar across five decades and in particular during his retirement years for his generous assistance here at Christ the King Parish. Ad Multos Annos - Fr. Tom! Celebration of First Eucharist: On next Sunday, May 5th, the young people of our par- ish who have been preparing for the past two years will take another important step in the process of their Christian initiation as they receive the Eucharist for the first time at a special Mass to be celebrated at 12:30 PM. As this is a parish celebration, all parishioners are welcome to assist at that Mass and to prayerfully support those who are joining with us in Holy Communion for the first time.

Revisiting the Resurrection: While the baskets are likely now void of any chocolate eggs and Easter has probably been put away for another year in many households, it should not be that way with us. We who are disciples of Jesus are only on the 8th of the Easter season’s 50 days and our task in these days is to keep revisiting the resurrection so as to be more and more deeply convinced of its truth.

St. Paul tells us that if Christ has not been raised from the dead then we are the most piti-able of people and how true that would be, for there would be no hope of anything beyond life as we now know it in the present world.

Yet Christ was raised from the dead, and not merely in a spiritual sense but as the biblical accounts make clear, Jesus was raised bodily. As we contemplate the resurrection appear-ances we discern something more of what this means, because any who knew Jesus before his crucifixion are very capable of recognizing him after his resurrection. What seems different about Jesus is that he is no longer limited by the laws of the material world, thus walls and locked doors are no obstacle to his appearing before his disciples in the Upper Room. In today’s account, Jesus shows the wounds of his crucifixion to Thomas and in-vites him to inspect them and assures him and the other disciples that he is not a ghost and they will be convinced of that when he eats and drinks with them again.

CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOLSCHOLARSHIP

A competitive scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to an 8th grade student in the parish of Christ the King, who will be at-tending a Catholic High School in the Fall of 2019.

Applications are available in the parish office. Please submit your completed ap-plication no later than May 31, 2019 to the following: Scholarship Committee, Knights of Columbus Council #13388, P.O. Box 1800, Mashpee, MA 02649.

Congratulations to the Newly Welcomed: During the celebration of the Vigil of Easter - four candidates for full initiation professed the Catholic faith and were fully welcomed into the Church and then confirmed: Marc Audette, Katelyn Coughlin, Brian Coughlin and Dennis Cooke.

As we congratulate them let us continue to pray for them that their faith and zeal will continue to grow. At this time, we also encourage those who are not yet fully initiated into the Church to consider becoming part of the process known as the Rite of Christian Ini-tiation of Adults in order to prepare to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist next year at Easter.

Almsgiving of Lent: On Holy Thursday evening, we collected the gifts for the poor that we generate by our self denial during the 40 days of Lent.

This year the three charities designated to benefit from our sacrifices were Catholic Relief Services $1,808, The Matthew 25 Fund $2,308, and the El Tablon Housing Construction Project $$2,308. Additionally we are grateful to those donors whose generosity went far above and beyond the usual Lenten almsgiving to provide funds for the construction of three more homes in their entirety in El Tablon. Our willingness to die to ourselves dur-ing the 40 days of Lent has certainly brought life giving blessings to the poor locally and internationally.

THE PASTOR’S PEN – Continued from page 1

Your contributions to Matthew 25 allows the parish to provide the funds to support the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in managing our Food Pantry and providing for those who come to us in serious need. It also helps the Knights of Columbus in their ef-forts to assist those in need, especially during the holidays.

FROM BAGDAD WITH LOVE: by Lieutenant Jay Kopelman with Melinda Roth.Amidst the horror that is war, marines enter an abandoned house in Fallujah, Iraq during the first week of the invasion in 2004 and hear a sus-picious noise. Weapons drawn, they prepare to fire, but find a tiny puppy left behind when the population fled. Military rules say “no pets.” How a dog named Lava is rescued and the unexpected lessons he teaches these hardened marines makes a suspenseful, true story.

THE FRIENDSHIP OF WOMEN: from prolific author, Joan Chittister OSB, comes this rich meditation of friendship among women. Fea-tured are eight women from the New Testament, quotations on friendship from diverse sources and the latest findings on the benefit to women of women’s friendships. Illustrated with icons by Marcie Bircher.
